Premiere CS5, DPX import and EDL export

Hello,
this is my first encounted with editing DPX files in Premiere, I've only exported projects to DPX so have a few problems. I received DPX files for editing and expected to return EDL. I've imported the DPX into Premiere as a sequence and edited the project - the problem comes is when I check the exported EDL - if I import the finished EDL all the clips on the timeline are not connected to the media; when I try to reconnect them, they end up pointing to the first frame because I can only select one DPX as opposed to the whole DPX sequence option. I've tried to import DPX file separately and recreated clips and cuts in the timeline - when I export that, bizzare thing happens - the finished EDL has all the files in reverse from start to the end... Sending the whole project to AE and exporting DPX was the last option because I wanted to find a way to export it from Premiere.
What is the correct workflow for editing DPX files in Premiere and exporting EDL?
Thanks in advance,
D.

Hey Sam... just wondering if you ever figured this problem out.  I have the exact same problem, albeit with FCPX XML's.  It's driving me bonkers and nobody seems to know.  Any insight would be truly appreciated.  Thanks.

  • Problems updating projects to new versions of Premiere (CS5 to CC and CC to CC 2014) Memory consumption during re-index and Offline MPEG Clips in CC 2014

I have 24GB of RAM in my 64 bit Windows 7 system running on RAID 5 with an i7 CPU.
A while ago I updated from Premiere CS5 to CC and then from Premiere CC to CC 2014. I updated all my then current projects to the new version as well.
Most of the projects contained 1080i 25fps (1080x1440 anamorphic) MPEG clips originally imported (captured from HDV tape) from a Sony HDV camera using Premiere CS5 or CC.
    Memory consumption during re-indexing.
When updating projects I experienced frequent crashes going from CS5 to CC and later going from CC to CC 2014. Updating projects caused all clips in the project to be re-indexed. The crashes were due to the re-indexing process causing excessive RAM consumption and I had to re-open each project several times before the re-index would eventually complete successfully. This is despite using the setting to limit the RAM consumed by Premiere to much less than the 24GB RAM in my system.
I checked that clips played; there were no errors generated; no clips showed as Offline.
Some Clips now Offline:Importer  CC 2014
Now, after some months editing one project I found some of the MPEG clips have been flagged as "Offline: Importer" and will not relink. The error reported is "An error occurred decompressing video or audio".
The same clips play perfectly well in, for example, Windows Media Player.
I still have the earlier Premiere CC and the project file and the clips that CC 2014 importer rejects are still OK in the Premiere CC version of the project.
It seems that the importer in CC 2014 has a bug that causes it to reject MPEG clips with which earlier versions of Premiere had no problem.
It's not the sort of problem expected with a premium product.
After this experience, I will not be updating premiere mid-project ever again.
How can I get these clips into CC 2014? I can't go back to the version of the project in Premiere CC without losing hours of work/edits in Premiere CC 2014.
    Any help appreciated. Thanks.

To answer my own question: I could find no answer to this myself and, with there being no replies in this forum, I have resorted to re-capturing the affected HDV tapes from scratch.
Luckily, I still had my HDV camera and the source tapes and had not already used any of the clips that became Offline in Premiere Pro CC 2014.
It seems clear that the MPEG importer in Premiere Pro CC 2014 rejects clips that Premiere Pro CC once accepted. It's a pretty horrible bug that ought to be fixed. Whether Adobe have a workaround or at least know about this issue and are working on it is unknown.
It also seems clear that the clip re-indexing process that occurs when upgrading a project (from CS5 to CC and also from CC to CC 2014) has a bug which causes memory consumption to grow continuously while it runs. I have 24GB RAM in my system and regardless of the amount RAM I allocated to Premiere Pro, it would eventually crash. Fortunately on restarting Premiere Pro and re-loading the project, re-indexing would resume where it left off, and, depending on the size of the project (number of clips to be indexed), after many repeated crashes and restarts re-indexing would eventually complete and the project would be OK after that.
It also seems clear that Adobe support isn't the greatest at recognising and responding when there are technical issues, publishing "known issues" (I could find no Adobe reference to either of these issues) or publishing workarounds. I logged the re-index issue as a bug and had zero response. Surely I am not the only one who has experienced these particular issues?
This is very poor support for what is supposed to be a premium product.
Lesson learned: I won't be upgrading Premiere again mid project after these experiences.

  • Import and/or export for actionscript without extention?

I have a project in which I need to import several hundered png images.
When I import them into the library, then select all the images, then view the properties, I Check the export for action script and the export in frame 1.
Now, all my images have class names that I can access though my code, however, it included the file extensions in the class names, thus making invalid class names.
Is there any way I can import and/or set class names so they do not include the file extensions without having to do it manually for EVERY file?

My actual project has something like 9200 images in it.
if  my main project, let's call it "main.fla", was to contain every one of  those images, every time I tried to run or debug it, it would take  FOREVER to compile... as a work around that I discovered in a previous  project was to put all my graphics and media into an swc file. (Let's  call it MyLibrary.swc)
While I was trying to get the  swc working, I discovered that while my media in the swc was indeed  setup to be exported for actionscript with unquie classes and  everything, when I compiled and built my project, I could not get any of  those media elements using the getDefinitionByName function.
After alot of reading and trail and error I found that the only way to get it to work was to have someplace in my code, an actual reference to the objects that I was trying to get with getDefinitionByName. It turned out, that without instantiating the object in the code, the compiler was omitting it.
Now, but instantiate, I mean doing this:
    var bm:BitmapData = new MyImage();
Where MyImage.png is in my swc and has a class defined as "MyImage"
Once I do that, then I can do this
    var classRef:Class = Class(  getDefinitionByName("MyImage")  );
But without that line above SOMEWHERE in my code (even if it's not actually executed), the getDefinitionByName returns an error saying it can't find the class.
    Now, here's the problem.
When I import all my images into my swc library they get named with the file extention... "MyImage.png" and when I select all the images that Imported and batch set the export for actionscript, they get automatically assigned a class name equal to their library name, so the class name is "MyImage.png"
so if I wanted to use getDefinitionByName to access the class, I would need to instantiate it in my code by doing this:
    var bm:BitmapData = new MyImage.png();
BUT, that is erronous as the period causes an error and the adobe docs says right in it that class names can't use periods or any other non-alphanumeric character.
So while the getDefinitionByName function DOES actually work with classes with periods in them, because my media is external of the main.fla, I can't load it unless it's instantiated first, which leaves me right back where I was.... having to to manually rename over 9000 classes manually one at a time.
I did some searching and found the "Flash Library Renamer" extension, but it requires me changing all my class names to be sequenial, which the vast majority is not.
Is there a way that I can import the files into the library and have it omit the file extension?
if not, is there a way that I can set the class names in a batch and not have it use the file extentions?
if not, is there an Flash Extention or plug in that will allow batch renaming using regular expression or wildcards?

    Hi..
i have exported a video of 2 hours length..  Then i just feel i need to replace the audio with another audio file which has small tweaks in it..  Can i replace the audio in the video i exported without having to reimport the video into fcpx and re-exporting ??
can i do this ? is there a way to replace audio ? any external apps available ?
Do let me know.. Thank you !

If you're set against reimporting/exporting: Quick Time Pro should accomplish what you're trying to do. It's a $29 license, but is much more useful than QTX and is a tool worth having if you don't already/

  • Premiere CC's XML and EDL files not being interpreted correctly by Redcine-X - clip duration problem

I'm having a recurring problem when sending a finished sequence to Redcine-X for final color correction.
Redcine-X doesn't read the in and out points on seemingly random clips in a timeline, making the problem clips overlap onto the surrounding clips on the same timeline track. So halfway through the video, one of the clips will just keep playing all the way to the end, and all the other clips that should be playing stay invisible in the viewer. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it?
The reason I'm posting here rather than on Redcine-X's support is because the problem seems to be coming from the way Premiere generates the XML. FCP's XMLs are interpreted correctly.
I've tried removing all effects and speed changes before exporting XMLs from Premiere. I've restarted, trashed prefs and cleared cache in Premiere. I've tried on two different computers. I've also tried exporting EDLs and the same problem happens.
My Premiere sequence is using proxy ProRes files, created from R3D files that RCX relinks upon import.
    System/Software info:
Premiere CC is up to date
Running the newest Redcine-X build 22.2.31684
Macbook Pro Retina running OS 10.8.4 with NVIDIA GeForce GT650M 1024mb, CUDA is updated, 16 GB RAM
Mac Pro running 10.8.5 with ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB, 4 GB RAM
As a side note: Premiere CC has been extremely disappointing so far. I'm having so many issues and crashes, so many advertised features seem to be buggy or not work at all, and Adobe makes it so hard find or get support. None of the threads on this community board have been helpful so instead of going through this arduous process I just fall back to using FCP7. I hope it gets better.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Premiere CS5 not importing .mov files - codec missing or unavailable

    Hi,
I'm on a Windows 7 PC running Premiere Pro CS5. Have encountered a problem with .mov files that I haven't had before. I recently received three files from a shoot at a local tv station. They are .mov files and I believe they are in an XD CAM wrapper or format. I've gotten files from this station before and have imported them with no trouble (not sure if the earlier files were XD CAM, though). When I try to import, I get the error message: Codec missing or unavailable. Would using the Prism video convertor to convert to another format be the way to go? The file sizes range from 7.18 GB to 14.9 GB. Thanks in advance.

  • Optimizing 780ti CUDA for Adobe premiere cs5.5, cs6, and CC

I Finally got my video card for my new rig . Found a great deal for the Zotac GeForce GTX 780 Ti OC
The only thing now is optimizing the GPU acceleration.
I would like to believe that I have performed the cuda hack correctly, but a few things leave me unsure.
I used this site to perform the Cuda hack. http://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/PremiereCS5-2.htm
GPU Hardware acceleration is enabled  on Premiere, and no GPU errors occurred since it was already left on this setting.
I haven't tried it on CC or CS6 yet since most of my projects are on cs5.5 at the moment, but i will soon.
I do notice that rendering is a little faster, but seems to only shave off 5-7 minutes from 25 minute render times. Benchmarks all over the net, including here,  seem to imply that times could increase by as large as a factor of 10, but I haven't seen anything close. The GPU load is also averages about 10% with spikes up to 80% whilst rendering.
The number one thing that has been disappointing is the playback. Under heavy graphics on the timeline, my videos are still unplayable. I expected this when I had a radeon 6790, but not with a gtx 780ti that has cuda cores.
Anyone have any ideas on what I could have done wrong?
    Specs:
    CPU i7 4930K @ 4.5 GHz
    Motherboard: Rampage IV Extreme
    Ram: 32GB
    Video Card: GTX 780ti OC
    PSU: Seasonic 1050w Gold
    HDD: Samsung Evo 500GB
Other Hard drives amount to 7TBs in total, Unraided
    Windows 7. 64 bit

So do you suggest I raid the boot disk? Didn't think I would need to, it's already really fast. Aren't SSDs usually standard for boot disks?
    I have 4 HDDs
    2 3TBS
    1 2TB
    and 1 500GB
I plan on making some HDD upgrades for raiding purposes. But I didn't think that my current HDDs would be the major reason for the poor performances of the card to such an extent...
Well thanks I guess. I'll try buying a 3TB for Raiding and see how that goes...

That's pretty much it, I think. Using Firefox 3.6.

  • Importing and XML export back Oracle

Is there a generic way in which I can reimport an XML database dump document back to a 9i instance? I am also not sure how this XML dump was created - any advice welcome!

I'm not familiar with your exact workflow, but subclips (as distinct 'clips') are an FCP-only thing. Other apps will not recognize subclip limits.
Did you include master clips outside of selection? If you did, and that didn't work, I'm not sure if there is much that can be done.

  • Premiere CS5 doesn't import AVCHD audio

Sorry out there, but I do need some help!
Premiere CS5 wont import the audio of AVCHD clips (1920x1080 50i) shot with a Panasonic AG-HMC151E.
Is it possible I miss an AC3 codec? Thanx

If the AC3 is fully Dolby-compliant, the full-paid version of PrPro will have not issue with it. I would assume that your camera WILL produce fully Dolby-compliant AC3's.
One of the issues with some AVCHD cameras is that they allow the user to record as DD 5.1 SS (6-channel), and PrPro will Import those into a 5.1 Audio Track. The rub comes with the Export from PrPro. It requires the Minnetonka Audio SurCode DD 5.1 SS encoder plug-in (costs extra), to Export as DD 5.1 SS, but PrPro will do a mix-down to 2-channel just fine.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - if one DOES go for the SurCode plug-in, be sure to buy it from within PrPro, as they will get an Adobe discount below the price from the Minnetonka Audio site. It's only about US$50, but that counts.

  • What is the documetary interview workflow for Story/Premiere CS5.5?

I've looked in vain for the answer to this question, which I'm sure is thoroughly documented SOMEWHERE - I just can't find it.  The few things I HAVE found online including at Lynda.com or other paid services involve CS5, which has a different workflow that involves OnLocation; this changed in CS5.5 but I don't see any on-point articles that incorporate the changes.
We've been using Premiere CS5.5 since its release but have never worked with dialogue metadata.  At the moment we're working on a documentary with a number of lengthy interviews.  In each case the interview subject is talking to an off-camera producer.  Accurate transcriptions of the raw interviews have been prepared.  Only the interview subject's ANSWERS are transcribed; the producer's questions are not (and are also barely audible on the soundtrack).  So, typically, the producer will ask a question and then the subject will give an answer that could be ten seconds or a minute.  Then another question, then another answer, all in the one clip.
So what I am looking for is a step-by-step workflow (for someone who has never so much as TOUCHED Adobe Story before) for importing the transcripts into the raw footage and then ultimately having Premiere match the transcript up with the spoken audio, and then maximizing the usefulness of this with the newly annotated clips as source footage.  Realizing that the interview answers are separated by barely-audible producer's questions, I assume that one challenge will be to let the software know that it should only be paying attention to the answers, and lining the text up appropriately, and not getting confused by the questions.  Perhaps the answers need to be subclipped?
If there's a tutorial on this subject I would very much appreciate being pointed to it.  If not, if someone could do a step-by-step (beginning with an empty Premiere CS5.5 project and nothing in Story) I'm sure there must be a number of other folks in my position who would benefit from it.
As a product suggestion: for documentary applications it seems to me that it would be much better to be able to cut and paste text directly from a text editor into Premiere and then let it fit it to the audio instead of going through Story.  While I understand it was even more cumbersome prior to CS5.5, I don't think interviews in a documentary need most of what Story offers (unless I'm missing something), so it seems like an unnecessary complication that could be eliminated.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Peter

Well, I tried following your steps, and I'm going wrong somewhere.
I created the film script and four scenes (one for each of four clips), giving the speaker's name as a character name (it's actually the same character in a continuous interview broken into several five-to-ten minute clips).  I let Story number the scenes (1 through 4, as expected).  I then exported an .astx file.
Within Premiere, I located the four clips and in the Scene column numbered them 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively.
When I right-click on one of the clips, select "attach script file," and point to the exported .astx file, I get the following error message: "Failed to attach script file to the following clip: \MyProjectName.prproj\FolderNameWIthinProject\00019.mts [Matching scene number not found]" (of course I have replaced the path and folder names in this example with generic names since the actual names reveal my client company's name).
Opening and inspecting the .astx file in a text editor I confirm that it does in fact contain scene numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively, for the numbered scenes.  Likewise I confirm the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively, in the Scene number column for the four relevant clips.
Any idea what the problem is?

  • Panasonic HDC-SD707 1080/50p & Premiere CS5?

Hey there i really need some help!
I got me a new Panasonic HDC-SD707 and till yesterday i always shot at 1080i/25...
but finally i wanted to shot in 1080/50p since this is the future and the reason you need this cam^^ (says panasonic) and progressiv got these nice details!
    OK!
so i went out and filmed some stuff at 1080/50p... put the files on my mac (via clipwrap)... and then i saw the problem!
quicktime play the files but not really smooth. sometimes the picture moves way to fast, then it slows down, then it plays at normal speed, fast,normal,slow.... and so on.
    so i started premiere cs5...
    and here are my questions!
    1. first of all there is no such preset for 1080/50p... am i blind? or isn't it there? and if it's not there... why?
    2. i tried a lot but premiere also doesn't play the files right... i also tried to use the ".mts" files straight from my cam but it's the same problem... is there anything special i have to do?
    3. is it possible that it is impossible to use the files recorded at 1080/50p and i need to stick with 1080i/25?
I hope someone can help and my english is good enough to get the problem...
I would really love some help because i'm just getting into video and don't know how to fix this problem on my own!
    Thanks in advance :-)

    1. It is not standard. Use the New Item icon in the project panel to get the correct sequence settings.
    2. See #1.
    3. No, you can edit them OK, but you can't export them, since the only allowable export format is 1080i/25.
