Premiere CS5 post alt-tab freeze
Hi all
I have this problem with Premiere CS5 (but I had it with ALL previous versions...)
If I import a lot of clips (let's say 100, a normal amount for a normal edit) - in this case P2 clips, but images or other format is the same, everything works fine.
Whenever I try to switch back and forth from/to PPRO CS5 using ALT-TAB or mouse click on windows app bar, Premiere "freezes" for many seconds, sometimes MINUTES, I would say in proportion with the number of clips in my project. It seems like every time I switch back to Premiere, it loads all the clips again, or check them or something like that.
Since going to Photoshop or another app is very frequent during editing, this is really frustrating.
I tried on many different machines, all Quad cores with 8 gigs of RAM, so in general powerful systems, but the problem remains.
It is not a disk read problem because Premiere SHOULD NOT READ anything switching back to it, and anyway I have fast disks and a 100 MB/S NAS.
Something I am missing? Some hidden switch...?
Or a terrible BUG, that continues from the beginning of the creation of Premiere?
By the way, Windows system, at the moment Win 7 64bits, but this bug was there with Vista, XP32... etc.
Thanks
Valerio Oss
PIXEL CARTOON
Add my name to the list of having the "Not Responding" message come up every time I click anywhere outside Premier Pro. It takes 10 seconds (sometimes longer) before Premier Pro CS5 becomes available again and attempting to work before this delay is completed causes the screen to become a white tranlucent which will change back to normal after the 10 second delay. The Not Responding message is displayed after about 5 seconds
The computer in question is Win7 x64 with an i950 processor, 24 GB of ram and a four drive RAID 5 configuration.
On the good side, from what has been written here it looks like in PP CS5.5 this issue is resolved.
This makes having acquired PP CS5.5 a little easier to swallow. Now if only Adobe would deliver the DVDs... Yes I know it can be downloaded, but I really don't want to download the Master Suite trial version this time while I'm waiting for the DVDs
Cheers,
Michael
Ps. when editing with a file from an external RAID volume, connected via Silicon Image Sil 3132 SATALink Controller, the "Not Responding" message takes more than 13 seconds to get back to normal.

GT70 Dominator Pro 2PE Freezing on Alt tab
Hi there, first post just wondering if anyone can think of any fixes I haven't.
Basically for about a little over a week now my laptop freezes whenever I alt tab out of a game. I can play fine, games will run great but as soon as I alt tab out and then back in the game locks in place. I can then no longer alt tab back out, and if I bring up task manager I cant click anything either. I can bring it up but as soon as I click on a process to attempt to terminate it my mouse switches back to the in game cursor and its locked again. All I can do is ctrl alt del, then sign out then back in, very frustrating.
I have all the up to date drivers, I have ensured that for both my intel video card and my Nvidia card. My windows updates are all up to date. I have the most recent bios update. I can't really think of what it would be.
Thanks in advance for your time

this could be a issue with game itself just my guess since i have problems like this myself few times on some games when you alt tab out then back the game .exe status changes from Running to Not responding. and remains like that all time so either that is issue with game itself or it could be something else causing it but idk exactly what but i still think it is more likely game itself.
I assumed that at first too, as it was mostly just WoW that was doing it. But now Diablo 3 is doing it, I'm going to check other games when I get home this evening. I can't see anything about it on Blizzards support forums, usually something like this occurs after a patch and is fairly widespread. -
Microsoft Excel 2010 alt-tab causes part of screen to freeze
One of my clients is having the issue above. When he opens 2 different Excel applications, and starts doing usual work, which involves copy-paste from one Excel to the other one, and changes between them using alt-tab, then all of a sudden part of one Excels
screen freezes and you can see the cells being at the wrong place. When you minimize the window and then come back to it, then it's fixed, or when you scroll down and back up it will fix itself. I have found other people having the same problem on the forum,
but the only thing I haven't tried is getting a new graphics card installed instead of the Intel HD one. I even tried uninstalling the Intel HD driver, letting Windows use some default driver, but the problem persisted even then.
The machine has Windows 7 installed, Office 2010. Hardware is standard Lenovo T420.
Since I've tried everything and the problem is still not fixed I'm hoping for some more ideas.
PS: I'm 100% sure not using alt-tab would fix the issue, or reverting to Office 2007, but those fixes are not acceptable for my client.check out thread below, it suggests this thing:
I experienced the exact thing you are describing and it was very annoying. I eventually found an
option under File - Options - Advanced, in the Display category, called "Show all windows in the Taskbar". Uncheck this and alt-tab will stop trying to interpret each spreadsheet in the same instance of Excel as a different application. Then
to switch between spreadsheets in the same excel instance, use ctrl-tab instead.

I normally have several applications running at the same time, some of them are running 24/7/365.
When accessing the applications its easier to alt+tab between them. On the occasions that I can actually get Firefox to open and stay open it always freezes and remains immovable on the screen after switching to another program.
Firefox goes black except for the border and the close button at the top right. The other buttons disappear. Even after waiting for a period of time it does not clear.
The freeze can occur either on the first switch or second switch. However, it always happens.Have also since found out that to start FF4 in safe mode you just hold shift whilst double-clicking the icon. We only find these things out after the event, murphy's law!
-
Firefox freezes the computer for about 20-30 seconds (not even Alt+Tab works), the screen blinks black and then it shows the desired page. Does that several times at the beginning, then sort of stabilizes.
This happens even if I simply hover the mouse over bookmarks, not even opening a page.
And waiting for this to happen some times or closing and re-opening seems to make it work ok again.
I've already disabled almost all add-ons (I'm using only one for Flash and NoScript right now), reinstalled Firefox (8.0.1), restoring only the bookmarks from an older version.'''Try the Firefox Safe Mode''' to see how it works there. The Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.''
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
* You can open the Firefox 4.0+ Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or use the Help menu item and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Don't select anything right now, just use "'Start in Safe Mode"''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shift key) to open it again.''
'''''If it is good in the Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.
Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.

Repeated Delays when Alt-Tabbing Back to Premiere Pro CS4
I'm experiencing a lengthy delay every time I switch away from Premiere Pro CS4 to another app and then switch back. Every time I Alt-tab back I get the hourglass cursor for 35 sec. Then, it goes through a generating peak file phase for each of the clips in the project. This goes more quickly, maybe 5-15 sec. But it does this EVERY SINGLE TIME I return to PP from another app.
This is on a newly built Windows XP 64 system based on the brand new Core i7 940 with 12 GB of RAM and four 500 GB+ hard disks. I've set the two media caches to each be on different disks. The system disk is a third disk and the project is on the fourth disk. There's no way this system should be slow with this material. The project is a lynda.com beginner's tutorial; we're talking half a dozen 15-second sequences.
How can I stop PP from going through this lengthy delay each and every time I switch back to it?

Premiere CS5 constantly freezing & unfreezing
I've been using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 for about 1 year now and I've never had problems with my hardware not being fast enough to handle my projects. I am editing 1920x1080 24p video from my 7D. I only have two video tracks and three audio tracks and the program constantly freezes and unfreezes only to freeze again moments later. The length of the project is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes long. Does anyone know of any known issues inside of premiere that I might try to speed things up?
Here are my computer’s specs:
Windows 7 Pro 64bit
Intel Core 2 Quad 6600 2.4GHz
8GB of DDR2 ram
Separate 7200rpm hard drive for video files
NVIDIA Geforce 9600GT
I know my video car is not combatable with the mercury playback engine, but I feel like the software shouldn’t be freezing with two videos layered.
I have antivirus software turned off, indexing turned off, internet disabled, and no other programs running. It seems as though I can open other Premiere projects without the program freezing. Is it possible one of the video files is causing the program to perform poorly?Thank you all for your answers. I think I have a combination of issues.
1. Outdated computer. I will be purchasing a completely new computer in
2012. I'd like to hear you suggestions for a windows 64bit set up. Is
16GB of ram enough? I was going to get a Intel i7 3.4GHz processor. Which
video card should I get? Trying to spend about $1,000 on the mother board,
video card, ram, and processor. Should I use a RAID configuration?
2. I was trying to edit 23.997 fps footage in a 29.997 timeline... oops.
I restarted and used the correct frame rate in my project to match my
footage and everything works fine.
3. I installed all of the recent updates yesterday. Seems to be helping a
little.
Has anyone tried to force Premiere to utilize an NVIDIA Geforce 9600GT for
the mercury playback engine?
Thanks for all your help... -

Premiere CS5 crashes every time I select the effects tab.
I'm running windows 7 (64bit) with the latest version of Premiere CS5 (I think it was 5.0.3, or maybe 5.0.2? Either way the updater said it was the current version). Every time I select the "Effects" window in my layout premiere crashes. It used to work perfectly, then a week or so ago I noticed one of my projects was crashing when I tried to open it. Since then, that project has crashed for me every time, and while I can import it into a new project safely, now I can no longer open my effects window (or apply effects).
I have already tried uninstalling 3rd party effects, uninstalling and reinstalling Premiere (all of CS5), and resetting my preferences. Nothing helped. What CAN happen is that a Windows update will change some DLL in Windows that breaks something in software... usually related to the graphics adapter

Premiere CS5 - Project Monitor playback is jerky after resintall of operating system and CS5
PROBLEM: Premiere CS5 - Project Monitor playback is jerky
This had NOT been an issue prior to reinstalling the operating system and all software. I have read numerous articles on the forums and have tried everything I can find...with no results.
STEPS TAKEN TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM:
I have scoured the articles here http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/search/index.cfm?loc=en_us&term=choppy%20video&cat=support&pr oduct=premierepro and others at Cretive Cow
I have installed all updates for CS5 Master Collection, immediately following a fresh install of the operating system and SC5 Master Collection.
I have ensured that sequence settings match resolution and frame rates of footage - the problem persists.
I have tested by importing both standard def AVI files created from tape and high def SONY MP4 files - the problem persists.
I have ensured the latest Video drivers are installed (clean installation selected, so that the Windows default would be removed) - the problem persists.
I have tried the 3D settings in NVIDIA control panel | Program Settings tab... selected Adobe Premiere Pro from the drop down menu | and chaged 'Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration from the value of 'Multiple Display performance' to the value of 'single display performance'; although, I ran two monitors before using this latest NVIDIA video driver and I didn't experience this jerky footage issue - the problem persisted after affecting that change; so, I switched it back.
Since I have 96 GB of RAM, I don't use a pagefile. A zero MB page file is the same setting I had prior to rebuilding the C: Regardless of whether I have a pagefile or not, the problem persists.
I have tried creating a fresh user profile, where the user profile is created on the C: drive by default; and, where I left it there on C: to test for the jerky playback in a new PrPR project - the problem persists.
Regarding the C: (system drive) and why I reinstalled everything, it had become unstable and was locking up. I ran DISK ERROR CHECKING with the FIX parameter and the system was still locking up on me. Keep in mind that the System drive is a solid state drive. Anyhow, I had no choice but to dive in and reinstall everything. I wiped the system partition of the SSD using quick format and started installing the operating system. Now, I've read the CLAIM that this cuases performance issues; but, the only place I see issues is in the video monitor playback in PrPr. Everything else - Office applications...printing...browsing the Internet...works just fine, everything is responsive, whereas, I couldn't do ANYTHING with it before.

PREFACE:
OK, I am hoping that through this week-long Operating-System-and-Software-reinatalltion excerise of mine, I have revealed something that everyone -- whom have been cursing Adobe over -- can apply to their systems to resolve this jerky video problem within PremierePro CS5 (and quite possibly other versions, too).
If you've read my post above, you've seen all the steps I've taken to resolve the problem. I've read many posts, some of which have mentioned hardware upgrade / opitmization steps that one may take to enhance performance, and hopefully resolve the problem. I've read where people have taken these steps and have still experienced the problem...and then they curse Adobe. Fer-shame, fer-shame, fer-shame! (nod to Gomer Pyle).
In my case, I knew it wasn't an Adobe issue, as it had worked flawlessly before; and, it wouldn't require a hardware upgrade or reconfigureation, as my system is completely maxed out with two processors, a system drive and a hardware RAID5 array, a CUDA-suported nVIDIA 4800 FX card, and 96 GB of RAM. bla bla bla, puke...whatever. Bottom line is this:
It's not a software issue. It's not and Adobe issue; and Gawd no! It's NOT a PC vs. Mac issue! HA HA. The software had worked swimmingly well prior to the reinstallation / 'lobotomy' I perfomed on the system drive.
SOLUTION FOR ME:
Download and install the updated drivers for the motherboard. Mine is an Intel Workstation Board S5520SC. Intel has an INTEL DRIVER UPDATE UTILITY which automatically scaned my Intel system and identified drivers which needed updating. A very handy, time-saving tool!!! Here's the URL: http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect?iid=dc_iduu
The scan revealed two Intel drivers needing an update:
Intel Chipset
Wired Networking
and one non-intel driver:
Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-fi
I downloaded and installed these three drivers, rebooted, and tested PremierePro, and was extatic to find this resolved the problem.
If you have a motherboard from another manufacturer, then you may want to navigate over to their wibsite to locate chipset and other updated drivers for your motherboard.
ROOT CAUSE:
While Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate was able to install certain default drivers during the Operating System installation (keeping in mind that this was done on an Intel Solid State Drive that I formatted using Quick Format) these default chipset drivers apparently weren't current and were ultimately the root cuase of the jerky video playback within PremierePro CS5.

Premiere CS5 crash in new Mac Pro 2010
I have two problems:
1. Sometimes when I make double cick in premiere icon, the program don't start. I see the previous premiere window with the 4 last projects, but I can not select anything, because the pointer mouse become a beach ball. I have to turn off the program with Alt+Cmd+esc.
2. The big problem. Premiere CS5 5.0.0 crash editing while I'm making marks In and Out in Source window or playing the timeline. The 3 monitors became black or freeze, mouse disapears, sounds freeze and I have to restart with power button.
I have last Mac Pro 2010, 2,8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, Mac OS X 10.6.4, 8GB RAM, ATi Radeon 5870, 3 x Hard disk 2 TB, 3 monitors connected trought DVI double chanel, and two minidisplayport-DVI double chanel.
Sorry for my english.
Any help or doubt about my explanation? Thanks Todd!
I install Premiere Pro CS5 (5.0.2) update, and the graphics update from apple but the problem persists. I disconnected two monitors, too.
It's very extrange because I had a configuration system running ok, premiere running ok, everything good, but the system hard disk crashes.
The problem is when I reinstall a backup copy of that system in a new hard disk, then Premiere don't start, and when start then crashes editing. All of the programs are running well, and other adobe CS5 applications, too.
The old hard disk is a Hitachi 2TB (originally from apple), and the new hard disk is a Western Digital caviar black 1TB.
I make the backup system from a *.dmg file. I tried with time machine, with disk utilities and with Carbon Copy Cloner. The result is always the same. Premiere won't start.
I think I have small ghosts inside my computer =)
Maybe is question of a bad clone but this is not a complicated task.
Maybe is question of permits. But I resolve the permits question with disk utilities.
Do you think is question of the clone image?
Now I'm reinstalling a new copy of Leopard SO after formatting the new hard drive western digital 1TB. I will install only the CS5 adobe master collection, to tried in a clean system. -
When I work in Adobe Premiere CS5 and make Alt + Tab (Windows) and return back Premiere is performing request much time. Why? And how can I get away from this? Thx'u very much
In addition to what Harm says, read this thread, which talks about the very large performance hit because of antivirus software, especially with application switching:

Long load times normal for Adobe Media Encoder from Premiere CS5?
When I export a sequence from Adobe Premiere CS5 using Adobe Media Encoder, the system freezes for several minutes before giving me the exporter screen. Then, when I've loaded my settings and clicked "export," the system again freezes for several minutes before beginning to encode. I'm using a system with an Intel I7 CPU 930 @ 2.80Ghz 2.80 Ghz., 24 GB of ram, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit operating system and an Nvidia quadro FX4800 graphics card.. Everything else is fast, but AME is slow. Is this normal? Should I reinstall AME?
Not sure what you mean about the process. From Premiere CS5, I click on "export" which brings up a menu. I select "media" from the menu which brings up the Adobe Media Encoder. I adjust my settings and click "export" from the bottom of the screen to immediately render the Premiere file. Clicking "Queue" would put the program into the AME Queue. Am I missing something? On the slowness issue, looks like I need to reinstall AME. I've been reluctant to do that, partially because I'm using some Matrox hardware and I'll have to reinstall the Matrox softare to populate the matrox settings into the media encoder. Looks like it may be worth it.
Thanks. -
Screen goes black for 3 seconds in premiere CS5 every time I click
This is the first time I run Premiere CS5... On a fresh system install.
I suspect it's not playing well with my video card, a Radeon HD 4870 with 1GB Ram... Very standard stuff. I am running window 7 64 bit with 12 gb RAM, a week old build. I have all the updates and latest drivers, sigh. After Effects CS5 runs fine, Maya 2010 runs fine, Quicktime runs fine... What gives.
Here's what happens: I only need to launch Premiere, right away I get the problem. The screen goes black 3 seconds before the prompt to create a new project. Once I create the project, the application workspace comes in, but if I click any menu, drag a tool window (whatever they are called), the screen goes black 3 seconds then comes back. Its basically impossible to work...Huge drag.
Update:
The problem stopped after I went into the 'device settings' in preferences and set the device to 'none'....When I clicked on the device settings panel, my monitor went black, and there was a 'no signal' warning that came up, as if the DVI-D signal was dead. I was able to restore the signal by hitting ctrl-alt-del which switched me out of Premiere onto the desktop. Clearly, there is some issue with video. I switched back into Premiere and was able then to set to no devices.
I'm not doing any capture at the moment, but I can only pray that it's some sort of bug related to not having a device connected? I plan on bringing footage from a RED in the next month. I upgraded to CS5 specifically so that I could use more than 4 gigs of RAM and for the new features.THank you for sending this.
I followed the benchmark directions, and I get an error at the final step
when I run the script:
line 99
Error: path not found
I tried for an hour different things, namely to re run the whole test
procedure, deleting the output files, etc... he script is looking for
something in the preview files that it is not finding. I think the procedure
was written for a previous version, because the metadata settings are
different in my version of AME, and I don't know how much that affects it.
Also, AME increments the file names when it renders them so that I did not
get the right output file names at the first render. I had to turn off
incrementing and manually name each clip before rendering. The vb scricpt
looks for these names, so I understand it is important. I can't figure out,
however, what the script is looking for in the preview folder and not
finding.
After spending almost two hours trying to troubleshoot the script, I gave
up. I can tell you tho that it takes about 6-7 minutes on my box to encode
all the videos.
