  • HELP!  Can't boot after latest Apple Security Update (Released yesterday?)

The latest security update, which came out yesterday (I think it's this update: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305530 ) has ravaged my Mac.
    I have a PowerMac G4 Dual 1.25 MDD.
I installed the update, and rebooted like it said.
Once the computer came up, it got past the grey screen with the spinning wheel, the screen turned blue, right before it should present the login window... and then the grey (translucent) curtain slid down from the top, and a box in the center told me to hold down my power button and restart my computer.
Now this happens EVERY TIME I TURN MY COMPUTER ON.
I HAD a PERFECTLY RUNNING MAC BEFORE I INSTALLED THIS UPDATE. NOW IT'S COMPLETELY UN-USABLE.
    HELP! HELP! HELP!
WHAT CAN I DO TO FIX THIS?
I'm searching for bootable discs to try to get the Mac to come up so I can look at it. I haven't tried going in through single-user-mode (command prompt) yet. I came here first, because I need support FAST!!!
By the way, before this update, I was completely up-to-date with my Apple patches/updates. I was running 10.4.9 (I don't remember the Build #, but I was CURRENT).
Thanks in advance for any support (Apple?!?!)

    Ladies and Gentlemen:
Sorry for the alarming post. I'm replying to my own post to let everyone know that I don't think the problem is the Security Update alone. For lack of anything better to do, I decided to try troubleshooting this problem by myself... and here's what I did:
I booted the Mac in to Single-User mode, by holding down Command-S. Once in, I forced fsck to pass verification of the drive (fsck -fy). Then I mounted the root partition in Read/Write (mount -uw /). Once I had write access to the drive in the command prompt, I quickly decided to check out what applications and services were starting when my computer boots (/Library/StartupItems ; /Library/LaunchDaemons). From there I removed all third party applications and services. (I maintain a "StartupItems-Disabled" folder, and a "LaunchDaemons-Disabled" in the spirit of pre-OS X machines that had something similar in the System folder for extensions and control panels (if my memory serves me)... so that's where I put all the applications and services that I didn't want to boot (I moved them from the respective folders in to the "-Disabled" folders I had created).
Anyway... after removing all the third-party software and services from Startup, I rebooted, and my Mac came up just fine. I'm going to sift through the logs to see if anything was written about what happened at boot all those times. With any luck I'll figure out which application or service wasn't playing nicely with the OS and/or Security Update.
Good luck with your own endeavors. It's always scary when your Mac doesn't boot, so I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else (especially someone less technically inclined). I'll check the forums later to make sure no one else had similar problems... because I'm sure I could help them get to the bottom of their troubles.
    Cheers!

  • Slide Show Freezes after latest Apple Security Update

Since installing the latest security update to 10.4.6 from Apple, initiating Slide Show causes iPhoto to freeze on my 2 Powerbooks and iBook 500. The only way to get out of it is to Force Quit iPhoto. This happens with iPhoto 4.0.3 and with 2.0. Before the update, the slideshows worked fine. This happens on all slideshows and is not music specific (other music does the same thing).
    Any ideas?

If you think it has something to do with system software, create a new user account, log into it, and load some pictures into the new iPhoto Library there. See if you can reproduce the problem. If you can't, then the problem has nothing to do with the security update, but rather something in the original user space.

  • Display doesn't work after latest security update

I have three Apple displays with my MacPro, and after installing the latest security update, one of them just stopped working.
The status light is still on, and my usb devices connected still function, but I have a black screen and nothing is recognized in the displays system preferences.
Anyone else experience this? Did my display just die?

    Ut-oh!
    FWIW:
My 7-year-old 22” Cinema Display, on a 10.4.11 machine, with nearly constant use, now becomes so dim during the screen saver mode that regardless of which saver I use, it becomes no longer visible.
As soon as the screen saver is activated, I have full brightness (though not as bright as when the display was new), then it gradually fades until the screen is all black.
Upon awaking, the screen is very dim, and then, over a 90 second period, it slowly returns to normal brightness.
    1. The brightness control is set to max.
    2. I have toggled the brightness control and changed screen savers, both to no avail.
    3. Recalibrating the display did not work.
This seems to have occurred on the same day I installed the latest Apple Security Updater.
    Very weird...

  • Garmin GLO portable GPS quit working after latest Apple update

Garmin GLO quit working after latest Apple update ?

I am using Mountain Lion. I reset the system a thousand times. The Mac communicates fine with the printer, that's not the problem.  Somehow, recently something changed in the ppd file for the LaserJet 1320 that it simply does not print properly. For instance, I sent a job to print two pages, and use the duplex. The duplex works, but then the other side comes out empty.  Is there a place I can find the old - less secure, I don't care, I just want to print - ppd file for controlling the printer? I think the printer only supports certain level of Postscript commands, and the new ppd file expects a new level. This printer is 8 years old after all. If I plug the printer in Linux, it prints the same document fine.
    Thanks for any help

  • Errors after installing Apple security update

I installed the Apple security update released on May 11
(SecUpd2006-003Pan.dmg) last week and started having trouble with
Dreamweaver. I am currently running Mac OS 10.3.9
I receive the following errors when launching the app:
While executing onLoad in Design Notes_onOpen.htm, a
    JavaScript error occured.
The following translators were not loaded due to errors:
ASP.htm: has configuration information that is invalid.
When trying to save a file, I get the following errors and
    the file does not save:
While executing onLoad in _beforeSave.htm, the following
JavaScript error(s) occurred: In file _beforeSave: ReferenceError:
    beforeSave is not defined.
While executing onLoad in Design Notes_onOpen.htm, a
    JavaScript error occured.
If I close the file, it will prompt me to save the file and I
get those same errors, but it does save the file before closing it.
I installed the Dreamweaver 8.0.2 updater just to make sure I
had my application up-to-date, but am still getting the
    errors.

Kmattingly, welcome, it is a good idea to always Repair Permissions before and after each upgrade. Bootup from the install CD (C key held down) and once the disk mounts (X window) open Disk Utility from the Main Menu under Installer. Choose your drive in the left column then select First Aid, now run the Repair, if it does not repair run it again. Now select the startup volume (with the OS) and run the Repair Permissions, quit Disk Utility.
Now go back up to the Main Menu under Install/Change Startup Disk and select your startup volume then Restart.

  • Wireless keyboard doesn't work after latest security update

    Hi,
I update MacOS 10.6.7 with latest security update and my wirelles keyboard is connected, but keys not work, capslock light doesn't change. I try charge battery, then I replace new battery, but it has no effect. I connect keyboard to another Mac with Leopard system and there's no problem... There's some solution? Thanks

Try repairing permissions with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility.
There select First Aid.  After that select the hard drive within Disk Utility's window.  Finally click on the button that says Repair Permissions.  A reboot may be necessary to finish the work when it is done.
    Ignore any errors reported.

  • Photo editor app now available but doesn't work, after latest What's New update

    hi all
odd experience what I wanted to highlight with you all.
I've just had an updated (this morning) to What's New build 3.0.A.0.2
After installing this patch / update, I was then told that "Photo Editor" was available to download. Build is 5.0.A.0.12
As far as I'm concerned I've not had this app on my phone before - checking in system apps reveals this is a fresh install, rather than an update to an existing app.
Also, I've not worked out how to run it, as there's no app shortcut on my homescreen. The app is not visible in the app picklist (when adding new items to my homescreens) either. Nor is the app in the main app list (accessed with the 6 dots button in the middle of the permanent shortcut panel on the homescreen).
I've even tried using a very useful app "quick shortcut maker" and although I can find photo editor in its activity list, when i test the generated shortcut, I get "unfortunately, photo editor has stopped".
    Any ideas?
I do have some apps disabled, so does photo editor have any known dependencies?
EDIT: I've tried clearing photo editor data and restarting - no change.
    Cheers,
    Gary
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi MyAliasIsGary
Photo Editor is a system app only, it is available for use when editing photo's through your Album or Photo's app. For example, if you go into Album > tap on a photo > tap the icon at the bottom that looks like a pencil on paper > tap Photo editor.

  • Sync doesn't work after latest update

I've got PC suite 7.1.180.94 and Outlook 2010 (commercial set up with Exchange).  The latest PC suite update seems to have broken sync.  I click the "Synchonize" icon and absolutely nothing happens.
I've tried a repair, remove-and-replace etc but no dice - any ideas?  Happy to do some diagnosing as I'm a software engineer.
DON'T suggest Ovi, unless Nokia have added one-way sync - I don't want my employer's Contacts and Calendars on my phone!
    Thanks,
    Papadeltasierra

Hi papadeltasierra, can you download Nokia Suite 3.8.30 from www.nokia.com/nokiasuite and try with that?
    Which phone do you have?
    Cheers, Samuli

  • Magic keyboard stopped working after latest OS X updates (June 2013)

My iMac: Just performed the latest OS X updates (M Lion) that appeared sometime late May or June 2013. I think the updates were some camera updates and iTunes, and some other things that needed a restart of the computer. After reboot the magic keyboard (that came with the iMac) stopped working. I couldn't enter the password on login screen. Funny thing was the keyboard seemed to be paired with the computer, as the light buttons and the volume buttons worked, but only them, nothing else responded.
Even trying to restart/shut down the computer did not help. Actually shutting down the computer did not work, the spinning thing spun for a while and then the login screen reappeared. No progress.
Fix: In the end I hit the physical power button and forced a shut down. After booting up, the keyboard worked again.
    Maybe this can help someone.

    Eric,
Sorry to hear that but my aluminum Bluetooth keyboard for my 27" iMac is working fine after the Supplemental Update.

  • Samsung SE-506BB Blu-Ray Player/Writer no longer working after latest OS X update

Since downloading the latest OS X update ("Command Line Developer Tools for OS X Mavericks") that rolled out today, I've discovered that my external Samsung SE-506BB Blu-Ray player will no longer read any discs and that ejecting and restarting the device and updating the device firmware does nothing to solve the problem.
This exact issue has been reported numerous times since January on these forums
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5829322 (1/26)
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5836103 (1/27)
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5895950 (2/12)
and in each instance deduced the problem to be the direct result of some software glitch in the most recent Mavericks update.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue currently and/or managed to fix it on their end? Moreover, admins, what if anything is Apple doing to correct this problem given that it's clearly a persistent issue? Please comment below if you happen to know anything so we can all get to the bottom of this mystery.

I just noticed this today with my player as well, which had otherwise been working perfectly since first purchasing it a couple of months ago.
The only source to my immediate problem that I can think of is the "Command Line Developer Tools for OS X Mavericks" update that rolled out today, which I installed shortly before attempting to boot up my drive -- the only thing I can ascertain is that this has to be an ongoing software update issue with Apple that affects some/all of the players with each problematic update round, since others have reported experiencing similar problems from as far back as January.
Were you able to fix your problem at all?

  • Javascript doesn't work after OSX10.8.3 update

The javascript on both google chrome and safari doesn't work (I cant open certain popup windows that uses it) after I installed the OSX10.8.3 update. I checked the settings and javascript is enabled in both browsers. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Okay I solved it by resetting the PRAM and SMC.

  • Wifi: no hardware installed, after latest yosemite security update

I just applied Security Update 2015-002 (at the behest of Software Update), along with the Command Line Tools (OS X 10.10) v6.2 update, and after the mini rebooted, it now says Wifi:No Hardware installed. And when I go to Network and Hardware in System Preferences, it gives a preferences error. I have tried resetting the NVRAM and the SMC, to no avail. Anyone else have this issue?

In some cases, this issue is caused by a hardware fault. A loose connection, a short circuit, or a microscopic break in a solder joint may open and close depending on temperature, making the failure intermittent.
Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already taken. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Turn off Bluetooth. If you have a desktop Mac, you'll need a wired keyboard and mouse to take this step. Those are useful to have anyway, because Bluetooth is not completely reliable. If Wi-Fi works with Bluetooth turned off but not when you turn it back on, delete all pairings in the Bluetooth preference pane and recreate them. Restart the computer and test again.
2.. There are a few reports that the problem was solved by unchecking the box marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
in the Power Adapter tab of the Energy Saver preference pane. I can't confirm.
    3. Reset the NVRAM.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. Start up in Recovery mode. In the menu bar of the OS X Utilities screen, there's a Wi-Fi menu. Try to connect.
    6. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • No start-up after latest Safari/Security update

Last night I updated Safari and the latest security patch per the automatic notification system. After the end of what appeared to be a successful install, I got the "Restart" dialog. Upon restart, the system begins to load until the grey screen with the grey spinning "wheel". At that point nothing further happens. After a forced-shutdown with the power switch, I ran Apple Disk Utility repair, Tech Tools and Drive Genius from my 2nd drive. Only Drive Genius found a "minor" error that it says it repaired. After shutting down and restarting from the "updated" drive again...SAME problem: System will not load. I have not changed the system in any way since my last Apple software update (weeks ago) and the machine has been running perfectly every day up until this point. Any ideas besides re-installing my entire system again?

I have a Dual 2.0 G5 and have experienced the same situation at least 3 times, going back into 10.3.X. I have a second internal drive that I keep a system on so that I can boot from it if I have a problem. After these occurrences, I would boot from the 2nd drive and run Disc Utility, only to find out that my main disc's directory catalog was beyond repair.
Usually if I let it sit (while stuck in boot mode) long enough it would eventually boot up, sort of healing itself. Afterwards, the boot process would be noticeably slower. I usually would just put it to sleep rather than shutting it down and it would awaken pretty quickly (as opposed to the long boot process). Ultimately, I would get tired of that and do a data backup, re-format the drive and perform a complete new install of all software. In fact, I just got finished doing that. I bought a new HD with the hopes that I maybe had a bad sector that was causing the directory to get corrupted. I am in the process of re-loading everything now.
I'm not really sure why this happens, but I know it does and, after following this board for a while, it appears to happen to a lot of us. The same problem seems to be described over and over. Many times, it is following an automatic Apple Software Update.
See if you can boot from your install disc and run Disc Utility to check your drive.
    Jim C.
