Premiere Elements 9.0 blank/black clips

I have been using this software for about 2 days now so please excuse my total lack of knowledge. I have an HP xw4400 workstation w/ 4GB, 3 80GB JBOD drives and XP SP3 w/ an nVidia card. Not sure which one.
I loaded an .avi file and added three songs from my iTunes library. Doing strictly linear eding w/ nothing being inserted. Some footage is being cut.
Editing was going fine using the Sceneline view. I have been able to clip footage and drag the in point and out point to edit my clips. Yesterday my system hung, which is unusual. I rebooted and reloaded my project.
Now when I click on an in-point or out point the two views pop up in the monitor window (like before) but now the screens are black on the bottom half. When I finish dragging the in or out point I now have a black/blank section between the clip I just edited and the next clip.
I have rebooted twice and the problem persists. Do I need to re-install my software? If I re-install will that effect my project?

Bill,
JBOD means just a bunch of drives, no RAID. I have PE9.0 and my AVI on one of the 80GB drive w/46.7GB available. My video card is an NVS285 with driver version 6.14.11.6252. I do not see any date information, but the card is probably 3-4 years old. I'm a little nervous about downloading the free software to check the CODEC. But your article makes it sound important to know the CODECs of your files.
I was editing without any issues before the system hung up. I re-booted three times and the second time managed to boot in safe mode and then shut down. I've been told this helps with any issues that are caused by hitting the power button when the system is hung. Could I have some how corrupted PE9.0 when the system hung?
When I switch to time line and move the inpoint the frames that I remove are replaced by a grey bar on my video and audio timeline.Thankfully, when I hit undo all of my frames come back.
I downloaded the latest version of Quicktime and PRE9.0 as Adobe recommended.

Forget about all the rest until you check out the Announcement at the top of this forum regarding the current 1/2 wmv display related to a recent Windows Update kb file. I missed the wmv part of your initial question by focusing too much on the thread title.
Here is a copy for your convenience
Announcement: Windows Update Causes Half of Display to Be Blacked Out
    Hide Details
MicroSoft has issued an Update for Windows, that is causing problems with Displays. The following is from Talbot McInnis, who tracked down this problem, and offers a fix:
"MS bulliten MS13-057.  Specifically, on XP kb2834904 and on windows 7 kb2803821 is causing a problem
For us, it occurs when decoding WMV9 files.  Not all uses of WMV decoding are affected, but I confirmed that when connecting the WMV decode DLL to a sample grabber for RGB32 video, the frames arrive black on top, so that points directly to decoding internals of the WMV Decode dll.
You can uninstall these windows updates to resolve your problem."
There are several threads on the problem that this Update is causing on the PrE and PrPro Forums, so one can get more details. So far, there is not another fix from either MS, or Adobe.

  • Does Premiere elements 10 support MOV movie clip formats?

Does  premiere elements 10 support MOV movie clip formats?

MOV is really but a wrapper, and can contain a broad range of CODEC's. Many, like PhotoJPEG, Animation, H.264, and many more will work fine, so long as one has Apple's QT Player installed, or the necessary CODEC's installed. However, if the file came from a Mac, and went to a PC, and had been Exported from FCP, or similar, there could well be one of the Apple Intermediate CODEC's inside, and most of those are NOT available on the PC. Also, if the file came from FCP, even if going to a Mac, there are CODEC's, that will only come from FCP, so one would need that program installed.
This ARTICLE will give you more detail on File Formats as "wrappers."
Please let us now what is inside that MOV wrapper, and someone can direct you.

  • Premiere Elements 8.0 project and clip previews blank!

I've recently purchased a copy of Premiere Elements 8.0, as I have a big film project that needed to be edited and can't afford Premiere!
Anyways, I started editing last night and unfortunately we had a power cut and my computer switched off. Before this I could preview clips (mpegs) to see which parts I'd like to add to my timeline and could preview the project (audio AND visual). But now when I've reopened the project the preview is blank (black) and plays audio, or sometimes it plays with a turquoise flashing background - again audio can be heard but I cannot view the video. Same with clips. Plays audio but I cannot see the video.
Any tips to fix this? It worked fine before, but now no preview!
    CHeers!

Uninstall PRE8 and then reinstall it.
You say 'recently purchased'  - it would be well worth your while to see if you are eligible for a 'complimentary upgrade' to PRE9 as the newer version is reputed to be far more stable than PRE8. If not eligible but you purchased within the last thirty days I suggest you go for the 30-day money back guarantee and get PRE9.

  • New to Premiere Elements 9 - adding keywords to clips in timeline?

Hello to hopefully my new best friends
I am editing college football highlights.  I have been using iMovie for about 3 years, but it lacks certain features that I was told (still hoping!) Premiere Elements 9 has.  Anyway -- I am editing from full game videos from an external hard drive.  I have imported an mp4 file (full game), dragged it to the timeline, and edited out the plays that I want to keep, then delete the rest of the footage.  So, I have lots of short clips on my timeline.  Before I begin the "real editing" or adding the transitions, effects, titles, etc., I would like to be able to "tag" each little clip with a keyword, such as "tackle, sack, interception, etc." - so that I can sort them easily.  I see that you can add keyword tags in the "Organizer" - but that adds the tag to the "entire clip" - which in my case is a complete football game; not my edited clips.  Is there any way to tag my edited clips in the timeline???
Thank you so much in advance for any help you can provide!
    Kim

    Kim,
I've not done this in PrE, so someone else will have to tell you where my process goes off, or exactly how to easily do it in PrE. In PrPro, I can do exactly as you have done, then create Sub-Clips from each of those segments in my Timeline. This will then place them into a Bin (like a folder that I create) in my Project Panel. I have the availability to use many different Columns there, and can even create them to suit. I can also order those Columns, so that say "Description" is the first Column visible, after the Clip/Sub-Clip's name. Some of the Columns, like Description, are text boxes, and I can easily fill them in with just the type of annotation, that you describe. When working on Projects, similar to yours, I will move Description to the head of the list, with Video Usage, and then Audio Usage next. Other attribute Columns follow along, and are ordered to my preferences.
Sorry that I am much less familiar with PrE, as most of my Projects there are rather simple. Still, I know that PrE offers one the ability to display several text Columns in Project Panel, so that part should work. I am just unsure of the Sub-Clips, so that you can easily see just what you have Cut.
Good luck, and I am sure that others will be along in a bit, and can point you to an exact workflow, that will get you what you want.
    Hunt
BTW - by using single words in Descriptions, I can even Sort by that Column. Not sure where the alpha runs out - first letter of first word, or something else?
PS - Welcome to the forum!

  • Premiere Element 12 when moving video clips. HELP me Rhonda!

I am currently running Windows 7 (Professional) and I downloaded Premiere Element 12 off Tech Soup so I could make a short video for my company. I am working on a specific project and I have done a considerable amount of editing already. When I try to renegotiate  the positions of various clips- an "error" message appears and then the program shuts down. Is my computer incompatible??? HELP! I don't want to lose all the work I have done. Also, I am so desperate I would be willing to buy the software all over again and put it on my mac-laptop but that would be my last resort! Has anyone else encountered this problem?
[Moved from Premiere PRO to Premiere Elements... Mod]

Thanks for the reply. Let us see what we can do with what you have.
When I asked about computer resources, I was asking about how much installed and available RAM the computer has, how much free hard drive space, the processor and the clock speed. Most of that you can get by right clicking the word Computer and selecting Properties.
    About your alternative plans...
Your Premiere Elements 12 Windows project is not going to work on Premiere Elements Mac (whatever version)
If you export your Premiere Elements 12 project to a .mp4 file (Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD with one of the .mp4 presets), you can import that into a Premiere Elements Mac project. However, that is a whole video which will need trimming to make significant further edits.
No guarantees, but your Premiere Elements 12 Windows project file should open in Premiere Elements 13 Windows. But, work with a copy of the Premiere Elements 12 Windows project as a safety net.
This is what I would like you to do.
Can you open that Premiere Elements 12 Windows project that shutdown when you were moving clips around in the Edit area of the program? If so, open to the Expert workspace. Have you placed audio transitions in the Timeline content? If so, remove them and determine if the problem is gone, is the same, or gets worse.
Also, what specific media were you moving around when the crash took place? If you can open the project, can you delete and re-import the file(s) in question? What Timeline tracks are you using and which were involved in this incident?
I am particularly interested in the answer to the last question to use the answer as a point to start the troubleshooting.
Please let me know if you need clarification on the above.
We will be watching for further developments and will keep close track of your posts.

  • Premiere Elements 4 Scratch disk error / clips off line

    Hi,
I am a new user to Premiere Elements 4.0. I have just started teaching Media Studies and am attempting A Level coursework, and am having numerous problems.
    1. We have been editing for some time. Today, when trying to access a project (all projects are stored on a designated drive of a school system), a notice popped up saying there was a scratch disk error and the project could not be opened unless the scratch files were put in the My Documents section of the school system. What does this mean? Is the project lost to us for good? I have a copy saved on an external hard drive and the same message popped up.
This occurred after editing successfully earlier in the morning.
    2. Projects which will open are appearing with all the clips offline. Where have they gone?! We have changed nothing since our earlier editing session today.
    3. In the earlier successful editing session, one group tried to capture some new material. All the new clips they saved appeared as being offline, and then their existing clips went offline one by one.
    Any advice / suggestions?
Thanks you so much to anyone who can help explain this.

  • Premiere Elements 9 for Mac: import clip format woes

So, is the Mac version of PrEl 9 simply unable to import video clips in the .wmv or .avi formats, or are there some codecs or modules I can install to enable this?

The Mac version absolutely does edit DV-AVIs. In fact, it edits them natively -- just as if they were DV-MOVs.
But I doubt your editing software is creating DV-AVIs. It's likely using some proprietary codec.
There is a program called G-Spot for PCs that will show you your AVIs codec information. There is also a Mac program that will do this for free, but I don't know the name of it.
If you can find it and we can determine what the codec is for your AVIs, we may be able to figure out what to do with it or how to convert it to an editable file.
Meantime, you can try to put it in Premiere Elements, place it on your timeline and Share/Computer/MOV using the DV preset. It may convert the file into something you can use in an editing project.

  • AVI files imported to Premiere Elements 10 are blank. Files can be played using Windows Media.

I am trying to import AVI files to Premiere Elements 10 but they are blank. They show the proper time length for the file but I get no video or audio. When I attempt to import the files directly from my Flip (one of the import options) the files are not even discoverable. I am using Windows XP. Any suggestions?

My wife has a Flip camera, and I do not believe that AVI is what her camera uses (just checked... her Flip saves as .MP4)

On what computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 13 running on?
What are the properties of these clips that you are importing - what is the difference between the earlier imported clips and these latest one?

  • Premiere Elements 3.0_stops inserting video clips?

Hi I hope someone can help me out here. When I'm adding mini video clips, it stops after a point which is no where near even half a dvd let alone a full one, and says 'adobe system memory low', cannot add any more save project.
What gets me is that my PC is has plenty of gb memory on it, do I need to do something in settings so it will take more video clips?  Its really frustrating, my husband bought me this as a 40th present 2 years ago and I haven't been able to create a finished dvd properly because what I want to create is stopped by premiere with this system low, save project message, there is no way near the amount of clips I could get onto a dvd.  Any ideas please???  Thanks

First, have you update your version 3 with the version 3.02 patch? This is very important -- especially if you are working on a system running other than Windows XP.
Second, I'm not quite clear where things are failing for you. Are you saying you're capturing miniDV over FireWire and that the program won't capture any further? If not, what type of camcorder is your video coming from and how are you getting it into your computer?
How fast is your processor, how much RAM do you have and how much free space is left on your C drive? Are you capturing your video to your C drive or to another drive?
You will likely need at least 20-30 gigs of free space on your C drive -- and it's very important that this drive be freshly defragmented. Fragmentation can cause the very symptoms you're describing, since the program need large chunks of free hard drive space for its paging and scratch files.

  • Premiere Element 7 - Titles and Certain Clips Offline?

    Hey guys,
So I'm using Pr Elements 7 and I had this problem start a few days ago. Everything was fine, then I opened the project I had been working on and it says all of my titles are offline, like the ones you make in the program. I've never had that happen before. I try restarting to see if that fixes it, and the only thing it does is make some of my clips say they're offline too. Now I've had the "media offline" red screen before when I move something and PrE can't find it, but this isn't what's happening. Nothing has been moved and in the edit panel that lists all of the clips and titles, nothing is actually showing up with a red screen as it's picture. Usually when it goes offline, I click on the clip and a window pops up asking me where it's moved, but when I click on a clip it just opens it up in the playback window like nothing is wrong. I can drag and drop the clip from there into the timeline and it works fine, but the existing clips in the timeline still say that it's offline.
I tried to just replace them with the original clips, but when I save, close, and reopen, it goes back to saying it's offline again.
I'm hoping someone else has encountered this problem and can give me a quick and easy solution. Like I said, I've never had this kind of problem with it before. I've been using PrE with this computer and these settings for ages. I didn't do or install anything different that might have caused the problem. It was like a 24 hour window. I've tried reinstalling cause that usually fixes everything, but didn't work. Help!
    Please and thanks,
    Liz

Read the article, I'm 100% sure I haven't moved any of the files. It never pops up and asks me where a file is located, and I can still play the file from the side panel. I can also drag it from there into the timeline and it works fine. It's just some of the existing clips in the timeline that are showing up offline.
As for exporting, if you mean have I exported like the video as a whole including the titles as in saving a copy of the video to my desktop, yes I have, multiple times. But I've done that before in both this project and others and it hasn't effected anything. And if you mean something else by "exporting", then no I don't think I've done that because I haven't done anything I don't normally do when working on a project.
I also opened another project I'd been working on, added some titles, closed it, then reopened it, and those titles and all of the media show up fine. So I'm thinking it's just this one project. And normally I would just start over, but I've put a lot of work into this particular project and really would rather not have to start over.
I'd also like to note I am no expert with computers so you might have to dumb things down for me a bit, sorry.

  • Premiere Elements 10 freezes when exiting clip edit

I'm running PRE 10 on a Dell 1725 with Windows 7 premium, 4 Gb of RAM, 2 GHz Core 2 Duo processor. After I've edited a clip ie set the in amd out points, exiting the clip PRE 10 freezes and closes. Even without setting the in and out points this occurs. What's up? Appreciate any advice.

My apologies I thought I had answered all of the questions. I see the format issue was unanswered. The format is HDDV which I assume is MP4. The start up tests were done using a Pentax W90 camera. I simply chose to let the software determine the format and correct it but I did choose the right one in the options.
My comment about "not ready for shrink wrap" might be a little unfair but the software seems volitile and not very robust or forgiving. There is no message to inform you of a wrong format or any problems. It simply shuts down after transfering the last clip. It doesn't even seem to matter how many you put on the timeline.
In other words it sound like the same problem. Unfortunatly I'm working with an onboard Intel chip set which I believe is the same the Dell in the original post. I would gladly buy a new computer if the chip set is the problem.

  • How do I add a transition between every clip in Premiere Elements 11?

    Greetings -
Folks, I'm looking for a feature that even the cheesy old Windows Movie Maker used to have.  I'm trying to figure out how to get Premiere Elements 11 to add a transition between every clip via some shortcut/quick means.  I find it obnoxious and inefficient that I need to manually drag a transition between every clip.  If I import 200 short clips that I took with my point and shoot camera, it'll take me over an hour alone just to put the transitions in place.
Is there any way to select a transition and have Premiere Elements add it between every clip?  I've stumbled on the fact that you can click a transition and make it the "Default" but have not been able to figure out what that does for me.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Premiere elements 11: clip the ends of an .mp4

In premiere elements 11, how do I clip the ends of an .mp4 and then save the result as a new .mp4 or other video?

    hill0093
You really do not have to clip anything if you do not want to.
    1. In the Expert workspace, place the gray tabs of the Work Area Bar to span the area of the Timeline that you want to export.
    2. When you go to Publish+Share/Computer/ and your choice, your choice has to have an option "Share Work Area Bar Only" for
you to place a check mark next to.
You need to meet the above 2 requirements --- then, with export settings set appropriately, you hit the Save button. You will find
your file at the hard drive location that you designated in the Save In of the export dialog.
With regard to the gray tabs of the Work Area Bar - when you are in the Edit area....
Screenshot is from version 13, but same Work Area Bar/Gray Tabs concept in 11.
You can move the gray tabs in place with the mouse cursor or with shortcuts --
    with shortcuts....
Move the Timeline Indicator to the beginning of the segment to be exported, then, as you hold down the
Alt key of the computer main keyboard, hit the left bracket key [
