Premiere Elements codecs

Hello,
Before I give a try to Premiere Elements, I would like to know how the codecs are implemented
Is it a DirectShow application that uses the DirectX filters?
How about AVC/AAC and MP4 containers that do not have native windows support? I have ffdshow audio/video decoders installed, will PE use those ?
I would not like PE to mess or install more DirectShow filters.
Or does Premiere Element come bundled with its own dedicated coder/decoders,  as a completely closed app.
I guess that at least for WMV it will have to use DirectShow
Or does it require apple Quicktime for example?
Could anybody please share some info on this?
Thanks!!!
Gonzalo

Thank you very much Bill,
When you say AC1 , you mean the video codec on WMV files, right? Actually I dont care for WMV at all, just wanted to know how PrE is architectured.
I am completely new to video editing, I just bought a new GoPro HD camera and I am looking for the right workflow that will enable me to edit very simple skydiving videos.  I usually like to use free software, but it seems there is no advaced free video editor yet.  PrE looks good, at least from what I have seen.
The camera outputs MP4 files with H264 (AVC) video and AAC audio, so this is really all I need for now.

http://vimeo.com/10701189
I guess I could transcode (and repack)  the MP4 to DV AVI (with mpeg streamplip or mp4cam2avi)  and then edit in DV AVI either in PrE or Windows Movie Maker.
And then render the final video in an MP4 container again with H264 and AAC.  Or render in DV AVI and then convert back to MP4.
But apparently WMM does not support export of HD video, I am investigating how to create my own export profiles to see if this is possible or not.
Anyway, PrE looks like a good option, at least from what I have seen. It looks much more advanced that WMM. So I just wanted to know how it works as I was  afraid it would mess up all my direct show codecs like ffdshow which work very well for me.
Thank you very much
Gonza

In case you did not find it, the following is a copy/paste of the Announcement on Premiere Elements 19/NVIDIA GeForce
that appears at the top of this forum.
Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA Video Card Driver Roll Back
If you are a Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card and you are experiencing
Premiere Elements 10 display and/or unexplained program behavior, then your first line of troubleshooting needs to be rolling
back the video card driver version instead of assuring that it is up to date.
Since October 2013 to the present, there have been a growing number of reports about display and unexplained workflow
glitches specific to the Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer has a NVIDIA GeForce video card. If this applies
to you, then the “user to user” remedy is to roll back the NVIDIA GeForce video card driver as far as is necessary to get rid of
the problems. The typical driver roll back has gone back as far as March – July 2013 in order to get a working Premiere
Elements 10. Neither NVIDIA nor Adobe has taken any corrective action in this regard to date, and none is expected moving forward.

  • Premiere Elements 12...codec issue

I am using Windows 7 on my lenovo U310 with Premiere Elements 12 installed, to publish my premiere project in MP4 h264 1440x1080p 30f.  The published project has video but no audio output.
Working on the same project with another computer with windows 7, also with Premiere Elements 12 installed, the published project has both video and audio output.
When i opened the project from the 2nd computer using the U310, the message says " this type of file format not supported, or the required codec is not installed."
    Questions:
a.)  in the U310, why no audio in the published work?
b.)  why the project file from the 2nd computer cannot be recognizd by the U310?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the forum.
When an output file has Video, but no Audio, it is often due to the settings for Multiplexing, in the Publish+Share dialog. Multiplexing combines the Video and Audio Streams into one file. My first act would be to verify that Multiplexing in the Audio Tab in Advanced, is set to something but "None." This article goes into more detail: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3557964#3557964
If that is not the cause, in this case, it would be informative to know exactly which Audio CODEC was chosen for that output. That info gathering could be as easy as just running the file through G-Spot, or MediaInfo, to gather the Audio CODEC in the file.

  • Codec error in Premiere elements 8

I tried to load a nikon D7000 into premiere elements 8 and received a codec error. I researched this and seemed to come to a converter conclusion. They seem to be shady and so I am not sure if it is more a scam to get viruses or I truly have to get a converter.
They are MOV files if that matters.

  • Adobe Premiere Elements 12: This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed

Hallo! I use Adobe Premiere Elements 12 on my computer (PC, windows 7). When I try do re-open my projects on Adobe Premiere Elements I get the message: This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed. The file type of my saved projects is: Adobe Premiere Elements Project (.prel). The same happens when i try to re-open the auto save files. This is very annoying because I losse all my earlier work. I would be really grateful for help. Best regards, Stefan

With the QT Player installation, you should have Apple's H.264 CODEC.

  • Adobe 9 Premiere Elements "file not supported or codec not installed"?

I am trying the Adobe Premiere Elements 9 trial version to determine if I should upgrade from Premiere Elements 7.  I was able to perform a "get media" on an AVI file and was able to create a DVD (including menus and chapters) that I can view in my DVD player in PE7.
I decided to create the same DVD project using PE9 so I could compare both programs.  When I perform a "get media" on the same AVI file in PE9, I receive the following message: :This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed."  I'm not sure why I was able to successfully process the AVI file in PE7 but not in PE9.
The AVI file characteristics are Video: 640(w)x480(h), data rate: 1329kbps, bitrate: 1448kbps, frame rate: 29 frames/second; Audio: bit rate: 118kbps, channels: 2 (stereo), sample rate: 48 kHz.
Anyone have any ideas or suggesstions?  Thanks!

    Chris,
There are probably 2000 possible CODEC's, with all the variations and tweaks, that can be placed in an AVI wrapper. Recently, some camera mfgrs. have begun wrapping H.264 material, tweaked from the norm, inside of AVI's. Why? I have no clue, but those cause all sort of issues with NLE programs - yet it is being done. To a lesser degree, the same can be said for MOV, WMV and even MPEG/MP4 wrappers. Knowing the file's format is meaningless, especially with the above cited case of H.264 inside of an AVI.
The great free utilities, G-Spot, or MediaInfo, will tell you pretty much all that you need to know about the file(s).
Premiere Elements, and also PrPro, are designed to work well with myriad file types, and specs., but certainly not all. PrE handles some consumer file types, better than its "big brother," but PrPro handles many professional file types, that PrE cannot touch.
I have CyberLink's PowerDirector (older version), and Magix MovieEdit Pro (also older), as each handles some specific file types and specs., better than either my PrE, or PrPro. Along wil those, basically used as converters, I have a great conversion program, DigitalMedia Converter 2.7, and will often take "odd" material into it, to be batch converted to something that PrE, or PrPro loves, like DV-AVI Type II's, for SD material.
The world of Video is very involved, and one needs to grasp the concept of CODEC's very early on, as they are the building blocks of Video files (and Audio files too). Each quarter, there are probably a dozen new ones, or variations on older ones, utilized by camera mfgrs. For a bit of background on CODEC's, see this ARTICLE. [Could be linked from the earlier article?]
Good luck, and let us know what is inside that AVI wrapper. Someone will know how best to handle it.

  • Premiere Elements 4 audio won't play on mp4 files, codecs missing/unavailable on .mov files

I dowlnloaded Premiere Elements 4, and when I import mp4 files, the video plays but the audio will not. I've also tried to import .mov files, and an error message pops up that says "Codec missing or unavailable." I downloaded the latest version of Quicktime, but that didn't change anything. The files will play back on the video camera, but I"m having trouble with them on my computer. The audio on the mp4 files plays in Quicktime, but not the video, and vice versa when I import them into Elements. Any suggestions?

Does Quicktime Pro also edit .mov files on a PC?

Premiere Elements 4 pretty much works with tape-based digital video. That would be video from a miniDV or HDV tape-based camcorder. It doesn't handle other formats very well.
If you plan to edit MP4s, you definitely want to upgrade to a more current version of the program. If you can't install a current version of the program, you may need to address issues on your computer (such as an outdated operating system or underpowered hardware configuration).
Short of that, you could buy Quicktime Pro from Apple for $29. It will edit MP4s, even on a PC platform.

We will customize a very detailed reply, but
    (a) What are the properties of your source media?
    (b) What did you or the program set as the project preset to match the properties of the source media?
    (c) What specific requirements do you have for this H.264.mov export file?
File size can be a compromise between bitrate, file size, and quality.

Premiere Elements 13 on Windows 8.1 (assumed 64 bit).
    First..
    1. Have you updated from 13 to the 13.1 Update using an opened project's Help Menu/Update. If not, please do so.
    2. Do the problems exist if you disable the antivirus and firewall(s)?
    3. Are you running the program as Administrator? Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer?
    4. Have you refreshed the Online Services using Premiere Elements Editor Edit Menu/Preferences/Web Sharing?
    5. Have you updated the Adobe Application Manager?
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4773
6.Is your video card/graphics card driver version up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the card?
    7. Lots more we could go through such as deleting the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file and, if necessary, the whole
13.0 Folder in which it exists.
But, I think that you have enough things going on here to warrant an uninstall, free ccleaner run through (regular cleaner and registry cleaner parts) and then reinstall with the antivirus and firewall(s) disabled.

  • .3GP codec needed for Premiere Elements 13

How can I play back .3GP files in Premiere Elements 13? It says I need to install a codec first to play. Where can I download a compatible codec for Premiere Elements 13?

    5
For the following 3gp file I am getting playback of video and audio in Premiere Elements 13 Editor and only video playback in the Elements Organizer 13.
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201549
See if you get the same results with it.
Note: This particular 3gp file uses MPEG-4 Video (mp4v) video compression and samr: AMR Narrowband audio compression.
Also, please look at the following scenarios and then let me know if it makes any difference in the results obtained....
    1. This 3gp file is not in Elements Organizer to start.
    2. Open Premiere Elements 13 Editor project to its Expert workspace and import the 3gp file using Add Media/Files and Folders.
Then drag the file from Project Assets to the Timeline (Video Track 1/Audio Track 1). Does the file play back with video and audio there?.
    3. Open the Elements Organizer 13. When you imported the file into the Premiere Elements 13 Editor, a copy of the file was automatically
placed in the Elements Organizer 13.
    a. If you right click the file's thumbnail in Elements Organizer 13, do you see a video image in the thumbnail?
    b. If you double click the thumbnail do you get play back of video and audio?
    4. If you repeat the same thing with a DVD video file (VTS_01_1.VOB),
    a. video and sound in Premiere Elements 13 Editor?
    b. video and sound in Elements Organizer 13?
In the case of the VOB, my results were
Premiere Elements 13 Editor...playback video and audio
Elements Organizer 13...playback of video but no audio
This file uses MPEG2 video compression and Dolby Digital audio.
Can you confirm the video and audio compression used by your 3gp files...please see GSpot codec utility.

  • LEAD Codec for MotionJPEG-Premiere Elements Playback Issues

There are several reports online (here and elsewhere) recommending installing LEAD Codec for MotionJPEG-Premiere Elements Playback Issues. Most, if not all, of the feedback is that it works and is only $10 USA dollars.
Today I went in search of that codec at LEAD Technologies and could not find a $10 LEAD Codec.
    http://www.leadtools.com/SDK/Multimedia/Multimedia-MCMP-MJPEG-codec.htm
Instead, I found a bunch of kits priced at way over $100.00.
From the chat service at that web site, I discovered that the LEAD codec is no longer sold separately. In order to get that codec, you would have to buy the Multimedia SDF Kit (priced $595.00).
    Any workaround suggestions
    OR
pay the $595.00 to get the LEAD Codec
    OR
go the file conversion route for the MotionJPEG?

    Great news!
On the PrPro forum, it's been 100% for MainConcept, and 99% for Morgan. One user could not get the Morgan to work on his/her system, but that could well have been OE on that poster's part. Still, those are not bad odds, and the 'cost" of the Morgan is better...

  • Missing .PSD codec in Premiere Elements 10?

I started a thread a few days ago about my Instantmovies failing to load all the content necessary for the movie, as indicated they should be by the animated thumbnail preview, but that thread is buried several pages away and nobody has responded to it, so I take it nobody will at this point in time, so I'm updating my experience with this one. I have already spent hours online with Adobe tech support, determined that I have all the most updated drivers, etc. (I'm a new user of Premiere Elements 10 and the problem has always been there, even after reinstalling the program.)
What I have to share that's new is that I went searching within my hard drive for the missing content, assuming that the Instantmovie folders I opened in Premiere Elements show me the full content of these folders, even though some content doesn't seem to be there. I found that there's a lot more content in those folders, if I look at them outside of Premiere Elements. Some of the missing files are .PSDs.
When I tried to load one into my project, for a manual insertion into the timeline of a rendered movie, the program refused and gave me a message saying "This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed."
So my problem is that the codec SHOULD be intalled but isn't? You reckon that's why the Instantmovies are missing content?
I have Photoshop Elements installed. If it's just a matter of copying a codec from Photoshop Elements and pasting it into a codecs folder of Premiere Elements, where's the codec to be found in the Photoshop Elements folder?
I'm excited that I may be close to solving this agonizing problem.

That's indeed odd.  My original installation was with the downloaded trial edition. Since the Instantmovies weren't working well, I uninstalled and reinstalled. Same problem, so I uninstalled and installed again from the disk set I bought. And there's been no improvement. So the install packages are the same (as Adobe tech support told me) and I encountered no problems doing the installations.
As you may recall from your other responses to a couple of other minor issues involving Premiere Elements, I'm using a Toshiba Satellite, i3 Intel processor, 4 gigs of RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit.

  • Premiere Elements 7 - When play my work frame problems occur. codec issues?

    Hello,
I use Premiere Elements 7 to edit my videos; however, recently I have found that most of the videos I add to my work shows a frame problem every time I play. I am not so familiar with the terms but I will try my best to explain how it happens.
    1. I open a new project
    2. Add a video (usually avi format)
    3. I play the video whitout editing.
    4. I see that after every 5 frames there is a frozen frame (like a dublicate of the 5th frame)
It results me to cut my video in every 5 frames to get rid of the frozen frame and it takes a lot of time.
What would be causing that? When I play the video with my media players it shows perfectly but when I add it to Premiere Elements 7 to edit, this is what happens.
I also see that there are multiple fddshow icons on the right bottom of my screen.
I assume there is something wrong with the codecs. In that case, what would be the best codec to have in order to edit my videos on PE7?
What do you suggest I do?
    Thank you in advance.

    Dear Bill,
I have formated my computer and reinstalled my operating system Vista Home 32 bit. Then I switched from PRE7 to PRE8.
    This is my computer info below;

    4GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3600 Series 512 MB
I have AVC Core 2.0.0 codec, NVIDIA PureVideo codec for MPEG, K-lite MEga codecs installed as they are-without any configuration.
Gspot still shows Xvid codec XviD ISO MPEG-4.
    File Length Correct
    Multipart OpenDML AVI (2 parts)
(69639 frames in first part, 2663 frames follow)
    Interleave: 1 vid frame (40 ms), preload=504
    Audio frames: Split across interleaves
    [JUNK] VirtualDub
    [JUNK] MPEG2 build 24586/release
    [ISFT] VirtualDubMod 1.5.4.1 (build 2178/release)
