Premiere h264 Encoder quality

I dare say this has been covered to a greater or lesser extent before but here goes.....
Im on Premiere Pro CS5 and I am trying to export a movie as an h264 quicktime and predictably the quality suffers even on highest quality.
Specifically my colours become somewhat de-saturated.
As I understand it (and before everyone jumps on me) this is partly/mainly down to type of h264 encoder that comes with PP.
But hey, this is a forum where the guys with the knowledge can help out those without it, so I was wondering if there were any other h264 encoders that can work through PP
and give much more faithful results (and preferably at a low file size).
Failing that, are there any h264 encoders that are standalone that people can recommend (preferably free).
Probably a tall order, but if you dont ask you dont get
Ive tried other codecs from PP but they all seem to fall down on something and I just thought by now it would be possible to get some great economic, lossless results right out of Premiere.
Thanks

I'm going to ask the viewing question from another angle since I ran into this same issue the other day.
What software were you using to evaluate the exported H.264 footage?
Here's why I ask. When my H.264 export looked weak and desaturated, one of the suggestions I found on Google was to see what it looks like in a different player. I tried a few of the ones I've got, and here are the results, using Premiere Pro CS5.5 as the reference:
Premiere Pro: Adding exported footage back into project and viewing it in the source monitor next to the program monitor, they look the same.
VLC: Matches Premiere Pro
RealPlayer: Matches Premiere Pro
NicePlayer: Matches Premiere Pro
Apple QuickTime Player 10.0 in Snow Leopard: Looks different: desaturated with lower contrast and funky color shift
Uploaded to Vimeo: Matches Premiere Pro
Well, there's a clear pattern there...if every player matches Premiere Pro except Apple's, maybe there's nothing wrong with the Premiere Pro H.264 output at all. Maybe it's a problem with playback in QuickTime Player or the QuickTime component (there's something called the QuickTime Gamma Bug that turned up when I was searching on Google, but I don't know how closely this is related). If so, that means the H.264 output file you're worried about is actually just fine.
As a result, I've started to use VLC to evaluate exported footage. (I was using QuickTime Player before.)
That's why I'm curious what you were using to view your exported clip, if it's consistent with what I found, and if others can reproduce the same results. Have you test uploaded that file to your online video host, and does it still look wrong when played back there?
By the way, I don't think a calibrated monitor is absolutely critical for this specific issue, because if you are viewing the same footage in two windows on the same monitor, they should look the same (assuming the windows are being rendered the same way). Because an uncalibrated monitor wouldn't alter just one window. If the monitor was a bit off, you should still be able to do a valid side-by-side comparison because both windows on that monitor should be off by the same amount. It just wouldn't be able to show you whether you're looking at good colors in the first place.

I have been working on a video for awhile now and I've recently noticed that my .flv export format has been removed from my choice of encoders. I export from Poser Pro Game Dev to Png Image Sequence. I organise a cam angle in After Effects...I re render out to a png image sequence.. continuing to hold quality. Then when a scene is done; I use Premiere to export a 1080 by 720 wmv format 29.97. But now I can't encode from Premere, Media Encoder, or Affter Effects. Please ...Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
I have been working on a video for awhile now and I've recently noticed that my .flv export format has been removed from my choice of encoders.
Check this for more information: removal of FLV and F4V export features from Adobe Media Encoder, After Effects, and Premiere Pro | After Effects regio…
But now I can't encode from Premiere, Media Encoder, or After Effects.
What exactly happens when you try to export?

  • SAVE AS using h264 encoder

Do any of you see apple adding an h264 encoder to Pro so we can all save bluray movie backups?
if not what's a good program I can use for backing up these disc's?

If I can open them as .avi and then save them as iPod compatable GREAT... Did I understand your answer correctly?
Yes and no. The "Save As..." option saves data in its current compression format to an MOV file container. (E.g., a DivX video with MP3 audio in an AVI file container would end up as DivX video with MP3 audio in MOV file container if you try to use the "Save As..." File menu option. On the other hand, QT Pro, GarageBand, iMovie, iTunes, MPEG Streamclip, and other applications can acces iPhone, iPod, and/or TV specific device export presets which will convert "QT Component compatible" files to H.264/AAC files using the "Export" file menu option. (For instance, the iPod preset will normally play on all three devices with slightly better quality than the iPhone preset while the TV preset, if properly encoded, will not play on either of the other two devices.) The basic difference between the two options is that the "Export" option performs a mandatory transcoding of data even if it is to the same format while the "Save As..." option does not.

  • Premiere & Media Encoder show Quicktime presents but fail on encode

My Premiere & Media Encoder CS6 both show Quicktime presents but fail each time I try to encode directly to Quicktime with .mp4 codec.
Quicktime is installed on my machine, which runs Windows. I'm using Adobe Creative Cloud CS6.
Goal: to use the Quicktime format and sucessfully encode video sequences as .mp4 files at various settings.

BUMP! To this thread as I am still having an issue encoding QuickTime files.  Below is a quick recap with some new information.
All testing is done on a system running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1 with Adobe Media Encoder CS6, CC, and CC 2014 (same results across all versions).
The failure occurs after a few seconds of attempted rendering, with only the following message from AME:
    "Encoding Failed
    Export Error
    Error compiling movie. Unknown error."
Important note:  This problem DOES NOT exist on a similar system running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1.  So it would appear the problem may be OS specific to Windows 7 Professional (although there are a few forum threads with people experiencing the problem on Macs as well).
That said, here's what happens on the Win7 Pro system:
QuickTime movie encoding fails at 1920x1080 both from a dynamically linked Premiere timeline and from a rendered file.
    TESTS:
    1) H264 video with AAC audio FAILED
    2) H264 video with uncompressed audio FAILED
    3) Uncompressed video with AAC audio FAILED
    4) Sorenson video with uncompressed audio FAILED
    5) Uncompressed 10bit YUV .mov with uncompressed audio WORKED!!!!!
Of course, a :30 second television commercial rendered this way is near 5GB and is not the way most broadcast stations want a file delivered.
To sum up:  all of the HD presets and custom settings for QuckTime with any sort of compression, fail to render on systems running Windows 7 Professional.
Here is a link to a similar issue, but the solution listed did not work in my case.

  • Problems with H264 encoding -- corrupted files...

In Media Encoder CS5 I tried to export my Premiere Pro CS5 sequence with H264 encoding(30 fps, progressive, CBR 6 mbps, 640 x 480). Audio(AAC,  48 kHz, 256 kbps). It have made a corrupt video file(with 2 GB size, and it should be ~3,5 GB). I tried to re-export with these settings, and now the size was 1045 MB. Again corrupted file, it cannot be played... The Media Encoder says that there is no errors, the rendering was successful. After several other tries with different settings, I cannot render my movie.
    What can I do?
    Thanks for help!

    Hello all,
This is an old thread, but it's an old problem that I'm concerned may still be continuing.
We're moving from 3.2 to 4.1. While copying our applications from 3.2 to a test 4.1 installation, we did a static file export for "All static files" from 3.2 and did an import to 4.1. We're seeing the same behavior that I and others have reported in the past - any static files that are javascript are corrupted when "all static files" was chosen. Exporting/importing each javascript static file individually appears to work fine.
If the bug was in 3.2 in that it was generating a corrupted export file when "all static files" is chosen, then I'm not concerned - we're moving from 3.2 anyway. But, if the issue is in the import then it must still exist in 4.1 and that would be a concern.
Does anyone know if this was a recognized bug in 3.2 and has since been corrected?
    Thanks!

  • Camera.setquality() not working for h264 encoding

    Hi,
Im using H264 encoder for encoding my live video to broadcast to ios devices. But there seems a big loss in quality while using the H264 encoder. The code im using for encoding is
    var h264Settings:H264VideoStreamSettings = new H264VideoStreamSettings();
        h264Settings.setProfileLevel(H264Profile.MAIN, H264Level.LEVEL_3_1);
        _ns.videoStreamSettings = h264Settings;
        camera.setQuality( 0, 100 );
        camera.setMode( 320, 240, 30, true );
        camera.setKeyFrameInterval( 15 );
        camera.setLoopback(true);
        _ns.publish("videoname?adbe-live-event=liveevent","record");
Is there any possiblity to improve my video quality or any other way of encoding the video?.
Im using flex sdk 4.6 and flash player 11.8.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Jozsef,
thanks for your answer. In which version and on which date will the CBR be implemented? Flash Player 12? Or a minor release of FP11?
And until then I have no chance to have a constant bitrate? The bitrate I am passing to Camera.setQuality will just be ignored? Or is there any workaround?
Thanks and I will test using RTMFP instead of RTMP, but the CBR is the most important thing for us.

  • Hardware accelerated H264 encode

Searching around I can see there are various hardware based H264 encoder PCI cards, usually designed for windows based machines and usually aimed at the streaming media and IP markets I think.
As a long shot, has anyone designed a Mac PCI card which can integrate with a custom Quicktime H264 component for accelerated encoding?
I realise this is very unlikely, but it would be a great product. Perhaps even some form of USB 'dongle' with a small encoder chip inside - not sure how this would fit with standard QT software though. Would probably require a custom / proprietary software app to go with it.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

It all depends on the source. If you are converting a DVD, then the likely hood is that its very clean image source, so the encoder has less work to do.
I work in offline editing and our working material is lower quality and often quite grainy compared to the full res source. As a result an H.264 encode take much longer.
I have since found two products which claim to offer hardware H.264 accelerated encoding through a USB 'stick'. One is PC only:
    http://www.adstech.com/products/RDX-160/intro/RDX-160_intro.asp?pid=RDX-160
...the other is not yet out, but will offer Mac support and works directly with any Quicktime supporting app - perfect!!

  • Quicktime 7.6.4 won't play h264 encoded videos on my 10.4.11 MacMini

    Hello:
This is my first post. I read through the forums and this seems to be the correct place to pose my question. If it's not, my apologizes.
I'm trying to find out why Quicktime 7.6.4 won't play h264-encoded video on my MacMini (G4 PPC). I'm running 10.4.11. I recently installed Perian 1.2.1 and it got some .avi files to play correctly, whereas before there was no sound. But the h264 files still get me a black screen, albeit with sound now. Some h264 files can be played in VLC Media Player (but that's a horrible player compared to Quicktime in my opinion, as it constantly drops frames and eats 100% of my processor time), but VLC even has the black screen problem on some h264 files as well.
I've also tried MPlayer OSX but that's really an alpha-type development and has a lot of bugs. Many movies it can't even open.
Sorry for the rambling, but again my question: Is there any way to play h264-encoded video in Quicktime 7.6.4 on my Mac?
Thanks in advance for your expertise and advice.

    Mr Ram,
There is a group of Quicktime specialists in Apple.com ⇒ Support ⇒ Discussions ⇒ Quicktime .
The more data you give us, the easier it is to help us help you to diagnose your problem. Your disk space would be very useful. Contrary to some, I advocate iDefrag to assist VLC and MPlayer, which you were a little hard on.
    GNU/Linux's free offerings
MPlayer was developed a decade ago, and I prefer it for viewing DVDs (for 'DVD Player') seems too dark. VLC (legally) copies many CRM-protected DVDs of yours, so you can play only the burned copy. When I'm having a problem playing a DVD, the VLC log tells me all: only perfect DVDs play well on VLC.
There are two ways of viewing everything.
    Streaming MPEG-4
+H.264/MPEG-4 AVC+ is a fancy codec based upon MPEG-4: it requires a powerful processor to de-compress it. I watched an MPEG-4 movie from a G3 iBook in 2005. It played flawlessly.
    Your Problem
Quicktime 7.X applications can not play +H.264/MPEG-4 AVC+ streams. It was a bug Apple never fixed. Frames are dropped because H.264 is so slow that it requires special hardware. You, I'm sad to say, don't have it.
To quote the Wikipedia on Quicktime: 'QuickTime 7 lacks support for H.264's Sample Aspect Ratio .[67] QuickTime X does not have this limitation; many Apple products (such as iTunes and Apple TV) still use the older QuickTime 7 engine.'
My Quicktime Pro on a PPC PowerBook is 7.6.4. You can either use a Linux transplant or upgrade to Quicktime X. Those more familiar with Macs may have better ideas for you.
    My best,
    Bruce

Did you already try removing iBA's preference plist as part of your troubleshooting process?
I don't think that plugin is the culprit ...perhaps more like an incidental victim in this example.
However, as this is a predicable issue, you may want to get Apple Support on the phone and let them take a look.

  • Encoding Quality concerns

    Hi all..
Am running iDVD `09 and have noticed allot of posts regarding which encoding quality "better" than another.
Apple's help, goes by what this forum claims, Best Quality: up to 60 minutes, High Quality: 60 to 120 minutes (1 to 2 hours), or Professional Quality: anything over.
However, Apple also goes by (and again probably this forum does too), those encoding settings are specified for single layer... No one mentions what quality for dual layer.
And all these settings are only applicable if you play the resulting DVD on your Mac. They don't mention of sharing or viewing on a standard HD TV.
Having said that, this poses a few questions:
    1. If I select a certain quality, why would it be different viewing on a TV screen (CRT or LCD) vs viewing on your Mac ? I would think the quality would be the same as you've burned it that way.
    2. I always use High Quality whenever possible (regardless of length), this is because I don't want to wait 4 hours just for something you can get about the same for 2. Plus, the quality is acceptable.. for me
I guess thats just me, but the first one is more important.
For example, my source movies are from VHS tape, Their recorded into mpeg2 format with EyeTV software from Elgato.
I then use iDVD to encode them in High Quality... Why would this quality be any different if I were viewing either on my mac, or viewing on my 32" Samsung LCD TV.?
Just find it interesting to see quality matters depends what your going to be viewing the final product on. For some reason, I just can't see why it would.

Encoding quality has nothing to do with what you are viewing your movie on. I'm not sure where you got that idea. To compress video, software analyzes images and motion. Mpeg2 is highly compressed, so it takes a long time to do this. If you do it quickly, it may result in visual artifacts. If you take a long time to do it, the software may be able to compress more efficiently, avoiding artifacts. You said that you feel that you get the same results in two hours as opposed to four. If you are using a short video, then the bitrate is high enough that the differences may be minimal. Or you may not be able to see them yourself, but someone else could. So if you are comfortable trading off quality for time, then you can use the encoding setting you like. But it has nothing to do with how you play it back.
Dual layer discs double the capacity, so you can double times you listed.
You talked about viewing on an HD tv; you understand that DVDs are only SD by definition, right?
Now, it is possible that DVDs will appear worse depending on how you watch them. There are a few reasons why this might be:
    1. People get used to high definition broadcasts and Blu-ray discs, and forget how DVDs look by comparison. Or they may not have stared hard at a DVD the way they do while making their own DVDs. Then they want to know why their homemade DVDs look worse than any other Hollywood discs (with its professional lighting, colorists, directing, cameras etc.) This is sort of like wondering why the wall you just painted doesn't look even after two days of painting; you just might not examine someone else's wall as carefully.
    2. Flat screen TVs are progressive, but DVDs are interlaced, as is our broadcast system. So HDTVs have deinterlacing circuitry which may do a good or poor job. Amateur footage (lots of shaky movement and rapid pans) can make interlacing artifacts look worse.
    3. Some people try to preview their DVD on their computer, a high-resolution progressive display. A DVD looks awful in comparison with all those nice menus, pictures, and fonts. Also, they are sitting about twenty inches away.
So it is possible for the perception of quality to be different depending on your viewing device. But the encoding settings are about how the video is compressed to mpeg2.

  • H264 encoding settings - problems with FLV/F4V conversions and playback... HELP!!!

I do a lot of LIVE ENCODING and have been struggling with FMLE. I own the Adobe Creative Suite of applications and am pretty familiar with working with compatible/required formats, etc.
We have been primarily using VP6/mp3 for encoding. Most of our work is SD. We also always seem to have trouble when trying to encode the FLV file to another format, audio always seem to be out of sync, but sometimes it works...
Do you know why that would be regarding the FLV audio falling off sync when encoding to another format, such as MOV? Also, when we try to play back the FLV, the audio sounds garbled up and only plays well in Adobe Media Player.
I keep hearing H264 encoding will provide better video, but I just can't get that to work. Also, why is it that my entire CS4 suite of applications can't read or playback the F4V file- that's unacceptable from Adobe, just a big huge pain the butt... I've had to buy several cheapie applications to try and read F4V files and try to convert it, except that converting F4Vs seems to be a hit-or-miss.
What should I be using to playback and convert F4Vs? I also heard changing the extension to MP4 works, but I haven't seen that work, not even once. The cheap video conversion apps I have that read F4Vs are: FFMPEGX and Wondershare (Youtube). Sometimes they open F4V, but not most of the time...
I am using a super fast new Macbook Pro i7, 8GB ram (not the thunderbolt/usb3), CPU always runs smoothly and effectively.
Also, I always use the Canopus ADVC-110 as my transcoder. I do both video via Firewire IN or Composite IN, then Firewire OUT into the Mac encoder. FMLE sees it ok, but I wonder if this device might be my problem.
    VP6 settings are as follows:
    VP6 video / MP3 audio
    300 to 500k video
    30 fps
    640x480 in/out
    44100hz audio
    56k audio
We want to start using H264 encoding settings, but in my experience trying it out, the output file is ALWAYS PROBLEMATIC. Also, when testing a live stream, the audio seems to fall off sync with the video.
I am looking for your recommendations on the H264 settings I should try. Most of my events are simple meetings with 1 to 5 speakers, mostly talking heads. We rarely encode high motion video, but I would also like to be able to adjust H264 settings for both talking heads and medium to high motion without (any) frame drops.
I have tried streaming to multiple/different Flash Media Servers, archived only to file, and H264 results seem always bad.
Any recommendations from professionals in the live streaming arena are much appreciated. I thank you for your time in advance.
    Thank you!

Sorry to know that you are facing these kind of issues, let me try to reply and understand issues one by one.

-- Adobe Flash Media Server version 3.5 and later and Adobe Flash Media  Live Encoder 3 can record content in MPEG-4 (F4V) format using an  industry-standard recording technology known as "fragments" or "moof  atoms." Some MPEG-4 compatible tools and players do not support moof  atoms.

  • Encoding quality in DSP 4

Hello. I'm having trouble with the encoding quality in DSP. I exported a short film from FCP in DVC Pro HD format in quicktime. It looks great in the computer. However, when I import it into DSP and it encodes it, the final product looks very poor. For one, the titles look terrible and whenever there's movement the compression appears obvious to anyone. I've tried to get the best encoding and it looks the same. Is it a regular problem? Does this happen to all compressed footage? or am I doing something wrong? I even suspect that it looks better on iDVD.
    thanx

    Length is 28 minutes.
Bit rate 8.0 - Max Bit rate 8.6
Audio was mixed in FCP. Sample rate 48K 16 bit
    Media is TDK DVD-R
the titles are generated from FCP
In both my computer screen (cinema display) and tv Sony Wega, the dvd version doesn't look professional-especially titles.
how do you do it to look great?
    thanx

  • 24p to 29.97i in Premiere, Media Encoder or After Effects?

Sorry to bring up a much discussed topic, but as I looked on the web and in the Adobe forums I got sort of lost in the tangle of discussion about how to best take a 24p sequence in Premiere and convert it to 29.97i for broadcast. I feel like this is something that Premiere might be able to do? Or maybe Adobe Media Encoder? I generally see from other forums and posts that this is done in After Effects, an app I have never even opened. So if the answer is that I need to use AE, then I'm hoping for some detailed guidance or perhaps a tutorial video? Though as I say that I know that certainly sounds rather demanding
Any comments or assistance would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks much,
    Bradley

    Hi,
I have been working on a video for awhile now and I've recently noticed that my .flv export format has been removed from my choice of encoders.

But now I can't encode from Premiere, Media Encoder, or After Effects.
What exactly happens when you try to export?

  • Premiere/Media Encoder can't render/export after 10.9.3 update.  Any Answers?

My computer ran the OSX 10.9.3 update a couple nights ago, and suddenly Premiere/Media Encoder can not export.  It just freezes up the computer until I cold crash it.  Same if I try to render a timeline in Premiere.  This issue just started yesterday.  It still persists after wiping my hard drive and doing a clean install of everything, which of course just put 10.9.3 back on there.  This issue does not exist on my laptop that has not been updated yet.  However, I have enough work and not enough time to be trying to edit everything on my laptop while this get worked out.  Has anyone else got this issue in the past day or two?

    Hey Todd,
I had two active projects that suddenly could not render/export.  One is quite massive and has RG Colorista quite a bit throughout it, however I could not export a timeline without any plugins on it.  The other project is also clean of plugins.  Then I started a new project and it went out just fine until I put the RG plugin on it.  But here is my newest glitch.  I just made a change to an old show and all of my titles done in Title Tool were resized and positioned.  Blown up and shifted to the right.  If I take the same file and put it on my laptop which still has not got 10.9.3, they are just fine.  Scaled properly and centered between title safe.  But now on 10.9.3 they are blown up and going off the screen.
