Premiere Mis-Interprets File Length

I am editing a short film on Premiere Pro CS5.  I had all my .avi files edited in 2.5K resolution.  When I opened the project today, a couple files in the sequence have some grey diagonal lines that go across them in the timeline.  (Similar to a locked track, but the track isn't locked and they only appear on 3 files, the others are all fine.)  On these files, after about a minute or so into the video file, the video goes black, as if there is no data at all.  I looked in the bin of files, and premiere says the file duration is only 1:18, when the actual file (when I look at file preferences in windows explorer) says the file is over 15:00.  I imported the same file into after effects, and AE interprets the full file at 15:00 - the correct length.  Is there any reason that Premiere would just forget half the file exists, and if so how do I correct this bug?  I haven't made any modifications to the original file or folder layout.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

I've never imported footage via firewire, not directly to the computer that is. The setup I've used for years now, I've recorded from the PD170 via firewire to various DV recorders. Currently using Focus-Vitec H200 Pro Compact Flash recorders. That gives me a single dv-mov file, anywhere from 14-17GB usually, that I can import into Premiere. I'm also using one older Focus hard drive based recorder that makes multiple 2GB dv-avi files that I join manually in the timeline and re-encode into a single file. In the past I've also used recorders that made single large dv-avi files. All of these methods worked fine.
The only thing different in the new process is the camera. The NX3 has built in SD card recording so I don't have to use external recorders.  Eventually I'll probably switch to hidef, and the Sony CMU software seems to import that just fine. But for as long as I'm using a mix of NX3 and PD170 cams I'll need to use DV.
Thanks

  • I can edit on Premiere Pro 6 files, but after a dozen keystrokes, the space bar and cursor keys stop working while the save function works

    I can edit on Premiere Pro 6 files, but after a dozen keystrokes, the space bar and cursor keys stop working while the save function, render workspace function, export file are still operational. How can I fix it so I may complete my assignment?
    Besides DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Creative Suite 6 is the only software on the machine. I am using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Operating System on AMD FX 6100 six-Core Processor at 3.31gHz and 32 GB RAM memory. There are two SLI-bridged GTX680 NVidia cards.
    The software was very stable for the last six months, working with 720P proxy files from 2.5K masters (Blackmagic Design Camera). I am working on a feature-length project that exceeds 1000 edits. I have broken the file into 2 one hour segments.
    I have deactivated the software before reinstalling the entire OS from scratch. PP6 was very stable for 48 hours. Then the freezing space bar returns. After a dozen strokes into the project, same problem.  I have made cache files store next to originals, I have deleted preview files if they were corrupted and causing instability. Am I missing something?
    I have Microsoft Security Essentials for virus protection. I double checked the memory for damage/defect. Nothing says that the motherboard or other components are damaged.
    I am in film competition overseas and need to have deliverables in less than a month's time.  I lost the last two weeks troubleshooting and this crisis came at an inopportune moment of the project.
    Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Still getting software freezes but found a way to mitigate for the mean time.
    Upon launching Adobe Premiere Pro, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to launch TaskManager as well.
    You will want to highlight Adobe QT32 Server.exe
    Right click and select "End Process Tree"
    You will get considerable stability in the program, long enough to get timing of cuts done. Be sure to save often.
    If the program freezes, do not hit Save. You definitely want to avoid saving the corruption into your TimeLine
    CTRL-ALT-DEL to relaunch the TaskManager and highlight Adobe Premiere Pro.exe
    Right-click to "End Process"
    No need to reboot the whole system; just launch Premiere Pro again and continue with the session. Note that your work reverted to Last Save.
    Hope this helps until the bug is fixed.

  • Premiere Elements 11 file sizes

    Premiere Elements 11 file sizes?
    I recorded small 170MB and larger 570MB videos with audio using HyperCam 3.
    Both load and play back in Windows Media Player (ver 12.0.7601.18150) without a problem.
    I can load and play back the small files in Premiere Elements 11 without a problem.
    But, when I load the larger file into Premiere Elements 11, only the sound track loads and plays.
    No video track and the preview screen is a solid black box on my monitor.
    Is there a file size restriction in using Premiere Elements 11?

    By the time I downloaded and looked at your sample video, I see that you and nealeh have worked out a workaround, that is, converting your Microsoft Video 1 (CRAM).avi (1920 x 1080 @ 10 frames per second) to H.264.mp4 (1920 x 1080 @ 30 frames per second.
    I was able to convert your sample video into H.264.mp4 (1920 x 1080 @ 30 frames per second using the free HandBrake program). All 11 minutes 52 seconds of the H.264.mp4 imported into Premiere Elements 11 without issue.
    In the case of these converters, we are dealing with changes in at least video compression, file extension, and frame rate.
    However
    The tests brought up some interesting questions
    1. When I ran your file through the gspot utility, the video codec was shown as Microsoft Video 1 (CRAM), but it listed Codec NOT installed.
    2. In spite of the Codec NOT installed, I was able to play back your video in Windows Media Player and VLC Player.
    3. Your Microsoft Video 1 (CRAM).avi imported with the complete duration of the file, but only audio, no video.
    Further
    4. When I ran my own Premiere Elements 11 created Microsoft Video 1 (CRAM).avi (30 frames per second, 11 min duration) through gspot, the video codec was shown as Microsoft Video 1 (CRAM), but it listed Codec NOT installed - same as yours.
    5. Yet, my file imported into Premiere Elements 11 completely (video and audio).
    6. I need to run a Microsoft Video 1 (CRAM).avi 10 frames per second, 11 min duration) to see if I get the same results as in 5.
    When you record your video, do you have the option of changing the frame rate from 10 to 30 frames per second?
    So, some of the questions that the remain for me
    a. Why is my Premiere Elements 11 created Microsoft Video 1 (CRAM) appearing to be different from the Microsoft Video 1 (CRAM) that you use in your file?
    b. Why is gspot telling me that the Microsoft Video 1 (CRAM) codec is not installed when I can use it in Premiere Elements 11 for the import and export of my own file?

  • File length different for a copied file. Or use checksum

    Hi
    I am making a backup of a file before doing some writes to the original.
    I first check it out of source control, then make a copy using:
    public static void backupFile(File f)
    try{
    File backup = new File(f.getPath()+"_BACKUP");
    if (!backup.exists()) {
    if (!backup.createNewFile()) {
    Logger.getLogger().log("Could not create "+backup.getPath());
    SystemTools.copyFile(f,backup);
    } catch (Exception e)
    Logger.getLogger().log("Error backing up "+f.getPath()+ ": "+e);
    public static synchronized void copyFile(File from, File to) throws Exception
    if (!from.exists() || !from.isFile())
    throw new Exception ("copyFile Error: checking 'from' file!");
    if (!to.exists())
    if(!to.createNewFile())
    throw new Exception ("copyFile Error: creating 'to' file!");
    FileInputStream in=new FileInputStream(from);
    FileOutputStream out=new FileOutputStream(to);
    int length;
    byte[] buffer=new byte[256];
    while((length=in.read(buffer))!=-1) {
    out.write(buffer, 0, length);
    in.close();
    out.close();
    After writing has finished, I need to see if the file is different to the backup..
    If so, I need to check it into source control.
    I wanted to use a checksum, but couldn't find an example that actually worked!!! Therefore I did a quick tool:
    public static boolean isBackupIdenticalToOrig(File f) throws Exception {
    File bu = new File(f.getPath()+"_BACKUP");
    Logger.getLogger().log("Lengths: New/Backup"+f.length()+"/"+bu.length());
    if (bu.length()!=f.length())
    return false;
    // Have the same lengths, so we can compare!!
    BufferedInputStream f_in = null;
    BufferedInputStream bu_in= null;
    f_in =new BufferedInputStream (new FileInputStream (f));
    bu_in =new BufferedInputStream (new FileInputStream (bu));
    for (int i=0;i<f.length();i++)
    int c = f_in.read();
    int d = bu_in.read();
    if (c!=d)
    Logger.getLogger().log(""+f.getName()+" has been modified");
    return false;
    Logger.getLogger().log(""+f.getName()+" has not been modified");
    return true;
    The problem is in that the File.length() method is returning different values for the backup file, than for the original, even if identical!
    For example:
    10/15/2002 10:22:05: Lengths: New/Backup413/402
    10/15/2002 10:22:06: Lengths: New/Backup397/386
    10/15/2002 10:22:07: Lengths: New/Backup191/185
    All the new files are longer that the backup, but the contents are exactly the same! Is there some WIN32 'extras' in the file that's causing a problem here???
    In each of the cases, if I open the new(Longer) file in a good editor, I can see that the lengths are correct. But no extra characters existed in the new file compared to the backup!!
    Any ideas would be most appreciated
    Cheers
    Chris

    10 and 13 are CR(carriage return) and LF(linefeed) - this is normal for a Windows file. Use this copy routine; it works.
       // copyFile -  input: inFile -  path to source file
       //                    outFile - path to copy file to (including filename)
       //                    bRemoveSource - true removes the source files, false leaves them intact

       public static void copyFile(String inFile, String outFile,boolean bRemoveSource) throws IOException
          FileInputStream fin     = null;
          FileOutputStream fout   = null;
          boolean bCanWrite       = false;
          boolean bDeleted        = false;
          // To preserve date/time stamp
          File fTimeIn = new File(inFile);
          File fTimeOut = new File(outFile);
          long lTimeIn = fTimeIn.lastModified();
          try
            fin  = new FileInputStream(inFile);
            fout = new FileOutputStream(outFile);

            try
              if (fout != null) fout.close();
            catch (IOException e) {}
          fin.close();
          fout.close();
          // Set out time to in time
          fTimeOut.setLastModified(lTimeIn);
          if (bRemoveSource == true)
             bCanWrite = fTimeIn.canWrite();
             if (bCanWrite)  {
                bDeleted = fTimeIn.delete();
       // copyStream (a helper function for copyFile) -  input: in  - file stream of source file
       //                                                       out - file stream of destination file
       //                                                returns: void

       public static void copyStream(InputStream in, OutputStream out)  throws IOException

  • 1099 MISC 2011 file length

    Hi Experts
    This relates to 1099 MISC 2011 file length. We have applied SAP note 1666672 that pertains to 2011 changes.While the form print looks good, when i compared the file with P1220 ( The publication that specifies details on tax filing), i found that P1220 states that length of records should be 750 for the T and B records - however in my case i get only 746 characters
    I generated the file in txt and opened with excel and used LEN to count the length of the records
    Any suggestions? - Is there a further SAP note that is to be applied or a i  missing something on the DMEE side of it.
    Further is P1220 the Gospel to compare the correctness with.
    Thanks
    Swami

    HI swami,
    note 1666672 was updated  25th, please, review version 4.

  • File.length issues

    I've been trying to make a terminal like program, but I've had issues detecting the file size. When I use file.length(), I get wildly different answers than use of the "du" unix command. Is this a bug in java? Mac OS X? Just me being an idiot?
    Thank you.

    They do different things for different purposes. du reports total disk usage, so it rounds up to the next block size. File.length() reports actual file size in bytes.

    Unexpected problem; We rrecently upgraded to version 3. Export of multiple tracks in a multitrack session makes each file length same as longest file. Didn't do that in Vers 2 of soundtrack

    Hmm... Ok, so I took that project and tried importing it to a new project, still with no luck. Then I tried taking that project and creating a new timeline by dragging one of the stills to the new item icon so that I'd get whatever PrPro decided was the best timeline, and still no luck. Then I tried creating a new project and importing different footage and it worked. Tells me perhaps there's something wrong with the stills? I know not to use overly-large stills in a project, but they're all around 4k resolution or smaller... so surely that's not too big, right? 412 stills total 1.5GB which means an average of about 2.5 MB per file... certainly not too big. I even had a couple video clips in the timeline that were shot with a point-and-shoot still camera, and I tried taking those out just in case it was something in those, and still no success.
    So, ultimately this project got exported without CUDA, and I'm okay... but I also am wondering what caused the problem? I do a fair amount with stills (not a lot, but enough) and I need it to work... do I just go on with life, assuming that it was some weird fluke? Or do I try a complete wipe and reinstall of OS and Programs?
    Oh, one other tidbit... whenever PrPro crashed and closed, the application itself wouldn't close. I have to go into the program manager and force quit it...
    Thoughts? Recommendations?

  • Premiere Elements Project file wount open in Premiere Pro CS6

    My friend Just bought Premiere elements 13 and created a Project. I cant open the Project in Premiere Pro CS6. Getting this error message:
    "The Project appears to be damaged, it cannot be opened."
    The Project workes fine in Premiere Elements 13
    What can I do? What is wrong?

    If you have done this:
    Import a Premiere Elements project (Windows only)
       Select File > Open Project.
       Browse to an Adobe Premiere Elements project file, with file extension PREL.
       Click Open.
    Premiere Pro converts the Premiere Elements project file to a Premiere Pro project file.
    and it wont work Elements 13 is probably too new for CS6.
