Premiere only utilizing 25-35% of my CPU - CS5.5 & CS6

Hi all,
I am backed up with at least 3 months of wedding videography projects and I am trying to figure out how to get my encoding and rendering times down. I have looked all over the forums trying to figure out my bottleneck. I thought it was my hard drives so I bought 3 2TB Seagate Barracudas and spread out my workflow. My CPU is only working at 35% and I'm getting very frustrated by it. I'm not even overclocked.
I have Premiere Pro CS6 on my boot drive, the project and media on my Raid, my media cache files and preview files on the hitachi drive, and my disk swap file on the WD drive.I have the Mercury Hardware Playback working with my GTX460. (Should I try turning that off and use software?) It took me 27 hours to encode/export my 2 hour video on mpeg2 Bluray. Then the DVD mpeg2 file took 17 hours to export. I tried the h264 instead of mpeg2 and it didn't export correctly so I stopped using that codec. It takes me about 20 minutes just to render 3 minutes of footage with a magic bullet effect applied.
Is there anything that looks off in this setup? Also I have tried it with CS5.5 and 6 and they seem to be about the same. The new hard drives and CS6 have given me only a 10% increase from 25%cpu to 35% usage. Thank you so much for your help in advance!

Magic Bullet has been known to cause poor thread usage. However this is sometimes because it's using your GPU, depending on how you have your settings setup. Usually (in most cases) though it will move even slower if you use CPU only. I have read about cases though where it doesn't turn out that way. The easiest way to check though is to export it with the magic bullet effects taken off the clips or disabled and then check your CPU usage.
Either way though I can almost promise your slow exports are being caused by Magic Bullet. I have seen so many people who use Magic Bullet end up not using it as often because of how slow it makes export times.
I also doubt your footage is the cause because I edit with ProRes HQ everyday which is 220Mpbs and I always see 95-100 percent CPU usage. My GPU is normally pushing around 30 percent or so whenever I have effects that are rendered by my GPU.
However though we will know once you test it. If that's not the problem then I have no idea what is going on. I'm sure someone else on the forum might be able to come up with some ideas though. (If this turns out not to be the issue)

  • FCP only utilizing .02 CPU on Render?

Since yesterday my FCP and Compressor have been going haywire. Originally my problems started when i was using compressor to render out a single pass.m2v and a 48:16 aiff, for a dvd to send out to my client. I have been doing this conversion for the past 6 months it takes no longer than an hour and some change. Well Thursday comes and i get the unknown time issue. At the same time though my FCP render time has quadrupled. Im using a 1st Rev MBP 2.16 15" with 2gb ram, connect via GigabitEthernet to a G5 i use as a server for my raid array. My raid is connected to the G5 via multilane to a PCI-E HighpointTech card. The footage i am working with is DV, and titles that have been converted to anamorphic .mov a show only takes about 20 min to render normally, however since thursday my computer is now taking 3-4 hours to complete a render, and during which is only utilizing .02 of the CPU. I am stumpped i have trashed the render files, trashed the preferences, and zapped the pram. I searched the forums but i couldnt find anyone with a similar problem, i am seriously about to just wipe my computer and fresh install everything

Im running 6.0.4 on osx 10.5.4, Thats what i originally thought the issue was, so i migrated all the media files over to my internal HD, and i still got the same results. After that i thought it was maybe something got tweaked in the sequence so i migrated a previous project over to my computer that had rendered out normally 3 days before, and to no avail it took 3 hours and 20 min. So at this point im thinking either there is an issue with my hardware, or gremlins are messing with me, because i cant think of a single thing. I really dont want to have to wipe and reinstall, that would set me back a full day, and right now my workload just wont permit that.

  • AE only using 25 percent of my CPU

I would like to get faster renders.  I have noticed that after effects is only using 25 percent of my cpu.  Is there any way to crank that all the way up to 100 percent like Premier does automatically?

First of all do you  work for Adobe?
I do not work for Adobe. I'm a user like you. People on forums helped me out a lot when I was first learning AE over a decade ago and I like giving back to the communities that helped me so much.
    CARLOSA345 wrote:
All 3d applications which are doing more intense calculations than AE dont require fine tuning to work properly.
This is a very valid frustration. It certainly seems as if it should behave differently.
However, your statement also demonstrates the core of the reason for the RAM/CPU behavior you've described. 3d software is doing more intense calculations. That's why it maxes the processors out, but look at the RAM use. For many of the 3d renders I do, the RAM isn't even halfway used yet all the cores are cranking away on my computer (plus all the cores on all the other computers I've wrangled into the render farm). After Effects is doing a lot of things that 3d software doesn't do, and so it uses system resources differently. It needs more RAM (for some compositions) and thus you're waiting on RAM while the processors seem to sit idle.
I've seen some folks with very footage-heavy compositions where their RAM and processors are sitting pretty idle because the bottleneck is their hard drive. If you're pulling 45 1080P clips at once for a shot, it's gonna take a bit for a normal hard drive to serve that up (luckily for me at my full-time job, I don't use normal hard drives).
But this is the crux of the problem. AE is such a versatile toolbox. It does things like DOF, 3d lights, soft shadows, particles, etc. but it also does keying, rotoscoping, stabilization and many other tasks. Some may rely on system resources other than the processors. That's why Adobe has made AE as tweakable as it is - they serve such a wide variety of uses.
Although, speaking of tweaking, have you seen how much tweaking you can do on C4D? It has a LOT more things in it to tweak than AE does. It doesn't usually crash though, but then, neither does my AE (which is why I suggested we could help figure out your issues).
And speaking of things sitting there idle, I would love for C4D to implement some form of GPU rendering natively as an option. I have very powerful GPUs in my computers at work (because my boss didn't listen to my technical request) and so it just sits there while C4D pounds on the processors. We haven't had time to do research into all the various GPU rendering plugins for C4D in order to make a choice and it frustrates the heck out of me to have all that horsepower just sitting there, idle.

Also you tell me that the team is working on the problem so what good would it do to start a thread on it you can find threads on this subject by the bunches and its never really resolved.
The reason I suggested starting a thread was that I hoped the folks here in the forum could help you get your systems running without crashing on you. While I may have over a decade of experience, if you put the experience of the other folks on the forum together we have many centuries of experience. The veterans on these forums don't have the crashing issues you seem to be describing. Thus, I thought we might be able to help resolve your problems and remove the frustration you're experiencing.
Other threads from other people are running different systems than you are. Different OS, different hardware, different third-party plugins... If the majority of AE users had the crashing problems you're describing, AE wouldn't be the powerhouse in the industry that it is. That is what sparked my hope that there may be something fixable for you. RAM filling up while the processors sit at 25% might not be fixable by troubleshooting, but crashing probably can be.
And yes, the AE team says they're working on making it better, but it takes a while to rewrite software that is as complicated as AE is. This is not the kind of change that comes in a month or two. So, in the meantime, I thought we could help you work within the parameters of your current toolset until it improves.
I'm sure you've already been through these resources, but if you don't want to get help from the folks on the forums, it wouldn't hurt to take another look:

  • Bridge (& Prelude & Media Encoder) included in a Premiere-only account?

    Hi!
I have a full CC account myself, but for a client of mine, I'm looking into different accounts. A production company I work for, is going to make the transition to Adobe CC. Because I have years of experience using it, they have asked me to oversee the operation. Now, as they don't need the full CC for all their workstations, I was thinking to install Premiere-only accounts on some of their sets. On the master workstation, there will be a full CC account so that After Effects and Photoshop and everything else are available, but on the others there only has to be Premiere Pro installed.
But are programs like Bridge, Prelude and Media Encoder available in a Premiere-only account? I can imagine it would be Premiere Pro + support programs. But there is no info on that to be found. Can anyone say something about this?
    Thanks, Bart

Installing just Premiere will probably no problem. Have had setups like that on several machines, and it never was a problem. Less possibilities, that's true, but for editing it works just fine.
Before CC, Bridge was a 'free' program you could download if you had Photoshop, Premiere or something else. AME indeed came with the production bundle, but you could use it on as many machines as you liked, without a license. The same with Bridge, you didn't need a license. Since it became part of CC, I never bothered anymore on my own sets. But now, for the situation mentioned above, I'd like to know if I can still use bridge as 'complementary' feature for archiving footage...

  • Premiere only recognizes 15 seconds of my 15 minute shot!! =[

Okay, so I'm editng on a PC, Windows 7 64 Bit, Adobe Premiere Pro CS5. I love everything about windows 7 and CS5.
I have a project in premiere that I was working with in CS4, i opened it in cs5 and everything is working just as it was in cs4.
I rendered out the film into 5 sections, than i up-rezed each section in Cineform Prospect HD and brought them back into cs4 to lay them on the time line and color correct.
Might sound a lil weird to do it like this, but its already done. lol.
But my problem is, the first 4 sections work fine and the 5th one doesnt.
On the timeline, the 5th section is supposed to be 15 minutes long. My computer recognizes it as a 15 minute video, but in Premiere it only recognizes it as about 15 seconds and has grey bars along the video on the timeline.
Here is a screenshot of my problem:

  • XDCam Video not importing into Premiere (Only the accompanying Audio).  Assistance Requested

Working on Premiere CS6.  Mac OSX 10.9.5

    Thanks Kevin,
I'm not sure if you can see my question, but I'm working in CS6 (not CC).  I can import audio off .mxf files but the video won't accompany it.  I've attempted conversions in various software & the result is the same.  I get audio only, and no video--but I can see still images of the video periodically.)
So, if you have an solution for that specific problem, I'd love to hear from you.
    Thanks,

  • Premiere only showing and playing 1 Audio Track when my file has 2

I recorded some gameplay while also talking through my mic.
When I play the .avi file in VLC I'm able to switch between 2 tracks.
Track 1 has my gameplay sound and track 2 has my voice commentary.
When I place my file into Premiere it only shows and plays the gameplay sound.
How do I show both tracks in Premiere so I can edit them separately?

I got MediaInfo to work, so here's the screenshot (:

  • "Activity Monitor" utility does not update the "CPU Time" column in real ti

If I use Activity Monitor to display "All Processes", why doesn't it update the "CPU Time" column in real time? It updates the "% CPU" and others, but not the total "CPU Time". I have all columns viewed if that matters. However if you double click on a process in the Activity Monitor window, the details about the process are displayed in another window (number of threads, ports, CPU Time, Context Switches, Faults, etc), and as long as that detail window exists, the "CPU Time" column is updated in real time in the main Activity Monitor window. Is this a bug or a feature?? Does Leopard do this also? Have lots of free memory so that is not an issue. Thanks...
    -Bob

I noticed the same behavior reported by Bob: Not regarding the "process filter" or the "update frequency" selected "CPU Time" column is only updated when details dialog is open. I noticed it just today (which triggered the search here), I wonder if this "feature" has been always present or maybe activity monitor is getting lazy?

  • Why does Premiere only let me put audio in the sequence?

I have a few videos taken with iPhones that I have used Media Encoder to make 100% certain they are compatable with Premiere. I have even edited these videos using different projects and exporting them also to make sure they are compatible. When I make a new project to edit these videos together, something messes up. I am able to import the first video and put it in the sequence and everything works fine. I then import the second video and everything looks fine till I try to add it to the sequence, it only shows up as audio when adding to the sequence. Both videos have audio and video when watching them in QuickTime and when watching the preview in Premiere. Any ideas as to what is causing this and how to fix it?

If you're on PPro CC, then check whether Source Patching is enabled for a video track. If not, that would explain why only audio is being inserted in the sequence.

  • Audio in Premiere only plays on computer

    Hi,
I am running a mac mini, now on 10.9 ( had same issues on 10.8 ) and using Premiere CC to edit some video. The issues is that when editing the audio will only play back on the inturnal mac mini speaker. I have tryieed to plug in headphones and tryied to use the Thunderbult disply speakers and even with thouse conneted it will still only play back on the little speaker. The exported video will play back just fine on any speaker set up. All other apps play sound just fine.
    Any Ideas?

lol! I'll give those a try. What I've found in the interim is this. I a dvd+r by Fujifilm and it successfully played on one of my players. I tried the sony dvd-r on another machine and it works. Still, the strange thing is that I've burned on that same disc before and it works on all my machines, but this one just works on one.
I guess I need to find a disc that is compatible to all formats - if that's possible.
    Thanks, Joy

  • Don't Have Serial Number for Premiere, Only Photoshop?

For Christmas 2012 I received Adobe Premiere and Photoshop Elements 11 and put these programs on my windows desktop. I recently purchased a new windows laptop and wanted to put these two programs on it so I could edit photos and videos on the go. I had the install disk but not the serial numbers so I logged in to my Adobe account and went to 'My Products.' But when I went to this, it only showed Photoshop Elements 11,  not Premier. I have both programs installed on my desktop but only one appears on my account? What is going on and how can I find the serial number for Premier?

Adobe has changed the format for the Adobe Chat contact, but it should be working "under the hood" the same...let us see what they have done with the tried and true route...
You should be seeing the following first in your path to Adobe Chat
When you click on the area where it says
    Chat
    24 hours a day, 7 days a week
you should then see the following
Fill in the required information. Then...
At this point, you should be able to click on "Start Chat" and begin the communicate with Adobe Chat on
the top of "Serial numbers and redemption codes"
Is that not happening? As you see, I got that far with the path, but stopped short of hitting "Start Chat".
Please let us know the outcome.
    Thanks.

  • I have 24GB ram in my i5 27" but it is only utilizing 4GB. Can anyone explain why?

I have a 27" 2.9 i5 late 2012 iMac with 24GB of ram that runs very memory intensive processes, but the machine is only clocking 4GB of my availalbe (22gb?) of ram. I am getting a lot of unwanted video lag and delay. Can anyone explain? I should be able to at least squeeze out 8GB active ram, I would think, maybe even more.

Are you saying that only 4 GBs of RAM is being recognized by your Mac or your Mac is only using 4 GBs of RAM out of the total 24 GBs of RAM?
    Where was the RAM purchased?
