Premiere Pro CC 7.1 choppy playback every 12 seconds

Hi,
I have a strange problem. I'm playing back 1080p/23.976 MXF footage on a 1080p/23.976 MXF timeline (identical), and the video stutters every 12 seconds. It manifests as a kind of deja-vu, where a small section of maybe 5 frames appears to play twice. During it, the audio continues perfectly, and I have perfect lip-sync throughout. So I believe that what's happening is that PP is dropping 5 frames and then playing the next 5 frames twice. Otherwise I can't explain why it maintains lip-sync, and the audio plays continuously at the right pitch. It's like an odd repeating-time artifact that would be a plot-point on Star Trek.
The problem is not in the video file itself -- if I play it again, it happens somewhere else, and it doesn't appear in exports. It's strictly playback.
My system is extremely strong, Core i7, 48 GB RAM, at least 100 MB/sec throughput from the RAID. During the stutter, there's nothing to see on the CPU graph. I don't otherwise have video playback issues on the machine. It's only in PP.
I've tried switching in and out of the Mercury CUDA vs. CPU, and it makes no difference. It also happens whether I play a clip in the source monitor or on the timeline. It happens whether or not I'm video mirroring. It happens regardless of what the playback resolution is. It happens regardless of what codec the footage is. It happens with both MXF, MPEG and MP4.
Most importantly, the Dropped Frame Indicator does *not* detect that it's happening.
While it's certainly possible to keep uninstalling things to find out if maybe something is interacting with PP in a bad way, that's very destructive on a work-system, and I want to hear if anyone has experienced something similar.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Per

Hi,
I solved it, and I'm posting the solution here for someone else. It has to do with the Turbo mode on the Core i7 processor.
I happened to notice that the jump happened during a period of no video on the timeline, and I saw that the playhead literally jumped back, which led me to conclude that this had nothing to do with GPU, but was related to the timebase. I searched the Adobe forums for posts related to a jumping playhead, and found a guy who said that the Turbo mode on the Core i7 processor messes with Premiere's timebase, and the playhead jump is a correction for it.
Switch do regular High Performance mode, and video is completely smooth.
Thank God I didn't go out and buy new video cards and tore the computer apart and did clean installs as was suggested. But it's pure luck, that would have been my next step.
Thanks, some guy!

    Hi,
Need your help to find out why none of the Premiere Pro CC Source and Program Playback Controls are working.. I can do playback using spacebar, but not clicking on the controls... same goes the rest.

  • Premiere Pro CS6 Extreme Lag / Choppiness In Playback Please Help

I have a brand new Windows 8.1 Desktop
1 GB Video Card AMD Radeon 7700
    16 GB Ram
    3.4 Ghz i7-3770 CPU
Scratch Disk on an external drive that spins at 7200 RPM
I'm coming from a Macbook Pro (with less specs then the current desktop I'm using) in which I had no problem with playback choppiness/lag with premiere pro cs6, so this has been quite frustrating to figure out.  I've looked at several other threads, etc and there has been little help on the subject it seems.  If anyone has any tips, advice, or can point me in the right direction to get rid of the lag/choppyness that would be a blessing.

    Okay I solved the problem.
If anyone else encounters this here's how you solve it.
    Goto "Sequence"
    Goto "Sequence Settings"
Here you will see "Video Previews"
    Preview File Format
I switched from "Microsoft AVI" to "P2 720p 60hz dvcprohd"
Now there is no lag/choppiness in any of my video preview files.  HOORAY!

  • Why does Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014 quit upon playback of a sequence?

I have a new iMac 27" 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7 with 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, running 10.8.5. I have a project using AVCHD files running at 59.94 fps, 1920x1080. The media is on a OWC Mercury Elite- AL Pro Qx2; it is at least 3 years old and it is connected to the iMac via a LaCie eSATA hub (with the eSATA cord). Also I have the Mercury Playback Engine GPR Acceleration (CUDA) enabled.
I can edit in a project for a while fine but then the playback starts getting weird and hanging up. The cursor jumps in the timeline and the picture freezes on a frame. Sometimes, the playback monitor screen turns a solid green. Sometimes I will then receive an error message saying "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Pro to shut down. We will attempt to save your current project." I usually have to force quit at this point. I try opening a new project and bringing in the sequences again. It will work for some time, and then the same problem again.
Is there a problem with Premiere Pro or do I need a faster, newer media drive?
    Thanks.

I keep running into this issue. I really don't understand what is happening.
I have a brand new Mac Pro (Late 2013) with a 3GHz 8-core Intel Xeon E5 with 64GB of DDR3 and an AMD FirePro D700.
I run my machine with the latests version of OS X Yosemite.
I keep every Adobe program up to date.
I've been working straight off my internal 1TB SSD.
Any ideas or information would be great.
    Thank you!
Are you running the following update? OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 Update
Is the SSD you are running your system on one you installed, or is it factory installed from Apple?
Are you testing with a brand new project file or one you updated from a previous version?
What happens to you precisely when this issue occurs? Are you working for 5-10 minutes, then the program freezes? Or do you get a warning dialog box?
Have you checked permissions for your Adobe folders (see my blog): Premiere Pro CC, CC 2014, or 2014.1 freezing on startup or crashing while working (Mac OS X 10.9, and later)
Have you tried trashing preferences (press Shift + Option while starting Premiere Pro)?
    Thanks,

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CC crush - no Mercury Playback Engine GPU acceleration (OPEN CL)

I was an happy customer of Adobe CC till few days ago.
It were a few weeks I did not update the software in CC due to a problem with connection.
Needed to use Premiere Pro CC. It always crushes my MacBook Pro retina 2012 (16 giga ram) during export of the video. The monitor became black and there was no way to restart.
The Macbook worked smoothly with all the other softwares. Deleted CC and reinstalled everything, which was quit painful. However, at the end of the day, Premiere Pro CC works but I cannot use Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (open CL) which I used all the times before with huge advantage (exporting a 1 minute video in good quality needed 2 minutes with GPU accelerator, 20 minutes without).
When I open old project of Premiere Pro cc I read this message "this project was last used with Mercury Playback Engine GPU acceleration (OPEN CL), which is either not available or not certified on this system. Mercury Playback Engine software only will be used". There is no way to change the rendered from Project setting - Mercury Playback Engine software is the only option.
My question: is it a problem with Adobe Premiere Pro CC or with my graphic?

    Ask in the Premiere forum.

  • Premiere Pro CC (v7.2.1) crashing every time I try to export

I've been trying to export a sequence on Premiere Pro CC (version 7.2.1) in editing mode: Canon XF MPEG2 720p, but I'm getting a message that says "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Pro to shut down. We will attempt to save your current project.
I'm running a one-day-old iMac on OS X (version 10.9) with a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 16 GB of memory, so I wouldn't think the computer is the issue.
I've tried restarting both Premiere and my computer 15-20 times with no success. I've also tried emailing the project to a different computer to export (as a .mov), but I received a prompt saying "The project appears to be damaged. It cannot be opened."
The render bar is yellow, and I've tried to find a way to turn it green without any luck. I've tried downloading the patch on the Adobe site, and I've searched the forums for similar problems, but I haven't found a way to make it work yet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Britton

  • Premiere Pro 6.0 Low audio playback in source window.

I'm using PPro 6.0 and out of the blue the volume of my source window is lower then the Program window. The levels are consistent. The actual volume coming from the speakers is louder on the program side then the same clip on the source side. All settings are the same as they have always been as far as I can tell. I'm using Premiere Pro WDM Sound. I've rebooted, I've reseated all the connections.  Kinda stuck with this one. I suppose the sound card could be dying.  Any other ideas?

  • Macbook Pro frozen with a strange sound every 5 seconds. What happened?

I was just surfing the net and suddenly my macbook pro 13 got frozen with a loud "beep" every few seconds (the same sound as that of upgrade booting). What happened? I've shut down and then it restarted as usual.
    Sorry for my english.

Sounds like bad RAM. Run a hardware check and/or take the machine to the Apple Store or AASP.

  • Premiere Pro CC 2014 suddenly choppy or no playback from timeline or preview

Hey folks.  The header says it all - can't play back anything smoothly as of this morning.
HP Z820 w/ dual Xeons, nVidia Quadro 4000, 32Mb RAM, 500Gb SSD boot, several internal and external (via USB3) drives.
This is pretty frustrating.  One thing to consider is that, due to misconfiguration of a synchronizing program, my C: drive got 100% loaded up over the weekend.  I removed the errant files and it now has 45% empty.  (Only programs on C:, no media.)
I have updated the nVidia driver, which didn't help at all.
Anyone else seeing this?  Thanks -

How old is your SSD? As long, as it has no garbage collector (like the Samsung EVO) and it was heavy in use over last month this really might be the reason. Also external drives can slow down the playback for they are often under 7200rpm or don't deliver full speed via usb 3 for some reasons as I have experienced...

  • Premiere Pro CS 5.5 Slow Playback

So.. I have the creative cloud and have been working on Premiere for a few months now. It just started giving me a rendering/play back issue. Even AFTER I wait for the entire project to render, the playback while editing jumps like CRAZY.. if it play at all. It's making editing pretty much impossible.
I've looked everywhere for answers.. and it seems like everyone knows about this problem.. and nobody has fixed it yet! Please help me. I'm going to go insane. I can't finish any of my work on time.
    Thanks in advance,
    Tiffany

Just for the record: CS5.5 and Creative Cloud are a bit different things...
P.S. If you really need help, you should provide details about your editing machine (OS, CPU, GPU, amount of RAM, amount of HDD, their speed and capacity) along with some information about footages you're editing (codec, format/container, resolution).

  • Premiere Pro CS6.0.5 Mercury playback and GeForce GTX680

I've just pruchased a new Mac Pro with the GeForce GTX 680.  This card seems to be on the approved list of graphic cards yet I'm not able to activate GPU acceleration.  The pull down menu is grayed out as if the card isn't supported.  I have the latest CUDA drivers installed, 5.5.28 (however I'm not running Mavericks) I'm on Sys 10.8.5.  Any idea as to the problem(s)?  I've done several seraches and haven't found anything addressing this particular situation.  Thanks!

Thanks so much!  This problem has been fixed.

    Hi,
I solved it, and I'm posting the solution here for someone else.

  • My pro is chopping out and freezing every 10 seconds

How can I speed up my macbook pro without clearing it and re-installing my OS? I have 57 gigs free of 215. I've had less than a gig before and it doesn't freeze like this.

    Hi Li,
That may be the problem. You may have directory corruption.
First check the S.M.A.R.T. status on your HD: Boot from install disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down the c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screen select the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar > select Disk Utility > select your HD inthe panel on the left side (the name of the HD’s manufacturer and the model number, usually the top item in the list) > look at the bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says “Verified” (good) or something more ominous like “Failing.”
If S.M.A.R.T. status is "Verified," run Repair Disk > click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility (such as DriveGenius, TechToolPro, DiskWarrior) or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD which will need to be replaced (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions.

  • Premiere Pro CS4 Choppy Playback...

So I have a new HP laptop with the following specs:
HP Pavilion dv7t Select Edition PC
    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Quad Core processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.8 GHz
    • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 [HDMI, VGA] - For Quad Core Processors
    • FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 750GB 5200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • 17.3" diagonal HD+ High-Definition HP LED BrightView Widescreen Display (1600 x 900)
Anyway, I'm shooting with a hdslr and I use Neoscene to convert the files. Now, on my much worse (dual core, four gigs of ram, etc)
anyway, If I play a video cip in say, windows media player (after converted in Neoscene) it plays just fine. BUT, when I bring that same file into Premiere pro cs4 it's choppy.
    Any help would be great!

    Hello all,
For what it's worth I found a fix for virtually every issue I was having with Adobe Premiere pro CS4. I installed a pair of 500gb SATA drives and combined them into a RAID 0 configuration. Then I designated all of my projects' scratch disks to the RAID and no more loading or operating issues.
    My system is:
    Windows XP Pro SP3 32bit
    AMD 64X2 2.6 GIG processor
    8 GIGS of DDR RAM
2 TB of storage including RAID-0
Dual monitors run from an NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT w/1 gig of video ram
I edit both HD and 4:3 video and have no issues at all. I was at the end of my rope, looking into purchasing a non-Adobe product when I tried the RAID solution. It worked for me, maybe for you too.

  • Stuttery playback Premiere Pro CS6, I know this is a FAQ but I can't find a fix.

I'm going to list as much as I can if I forget anything please don't be harsh, I will make sure to add/reply with what I missed. Please bare in mind I may add stuff that is not a cause of the issue but I'm just trying to give you as much background as possible.
Basically I have been using Premiere Pro for quite a while (around 4-6 months with no issue) I came over from Sony Vegas and have never looked back, (I use Ps, Au, Ai & Ae also so the intergration is perfect) a couple of weeks ago I started havng issues with playback I will add my specs below and you can see I have quite a beefy PC which makes me think it's maybe a hard drive issue. Everytime I open Pr I hit the 'HDV 1080p 30fps' preset drag my clip in and hit 'change sequence settings' Screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/kXG8n
Then as I mentioned about 2 weeks ago I started having stuttery playback (frames will stutter foward and after around 10 frames with jult back around 4-5 frames), I found a fix of copying & pasting my timeline into a new sequence but this fix is no longer working. One thing I have noticed is that the work area render bar used to be red and is now yellow when I add my footage, I am using the software MPE (I have an AMD GPU and as far as I'm aware I cannot do any different) I have 10gb of ram allocated to Adobe products in the 'memory' tab. I have tried 'optimizing rendering for' both performance & memory and giving it all 15gb of RAM that I can but it all makes no difference. Screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/Guanm
I have been googling it every day for the past two weeks, I even have the search 'stuttery playback in premiere pro' bookmarked and have have tried every possible thing. I have been forced to go back to Vegas for the moment and I want to be using Premiere Pro again so can anyone help?
i'm aware that it could be a hard drive issue as I only have one HDD, this has never been an issue before and I don't wanna go out and spend unnecessary money. I appciate any response, I'm not sure how these forums work with upvotiing or anything like that but if you could share this discussion with people that would be fantastic, thank you very much for your time.]
My PC specs: (I have put all that I think is relevent, if anything else is needed please let me know).
    Processor: Intel® Core™i7-2700k Quad Core (3.50GHz, 8MB Cache) + HD Graphics
    Motherboard: ASUS® P8Z77-M: MICRO-ATX, USB 3.0, SATA 6GBs, ATI®CrossFireX
    Memory: 16GB SAMSUNG DUAL-DDR3 1333MHz (2 X 8GB)
    Graphics Card: 2GB AMD RADEON™ HD7850 - DVI,HDMI,2 mDP - DX® 11, Eyefinity 4 Capable
    Memory: 1TB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s HDD 7200RPM 32MB CACHE (Please note: this drive is currently writing at 183 MB/sec)
Once again thank you for your time.

Part of the reason for such stuttery playback performance lies with the limitations of the single SATA connection (channel) itself. You see, SATA is not full duplex, but only half-duplex. That means that a block of transfers going in one direction must be completed before a block of transfers can even begin in the opposite direction. Think of the SATA channel (single connection) as a single-lane stretch of highway with traffic signals at each end. What's worse, that single disk must also deal with the Windows pagefile, the media cache, previews and various other things all going on at the same time. As a result, the effective performance of that single disk can plummet by a factor of six: That single disk, after accounting for all of the tasks it must perform at the same time as video playback, is left with only about 32 MB/s of bandwidth available for Premiere Pro.
In other words, that single disk is being severely overworked as it is.
