Premiere Pro crashing constantly while working with stills & exporting

I've been using Premiere Pro for a few months now, after being a loyal FCP user (since version 1.2!) and for the most part it's been a relatively painless transition.
This latest project is killing me though. There's a lot of stills and they seem to be causing PP to crash. I cannot get anything done. Cannot even export my timeline, from Encoder, or directly through PP.
My sequence is just about 5 minutes long and has about 15 JPG photos with moderate pan and scan. I keep getting "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Pro to shut down. We will attempt to save your current project" message.
I'm running a MBP Retina. 2.7GHz Intel Core i7. 16GB 1600 MHz Ram. V 10.8.5. The problem exists whether my project file is saved to local or external drive. I've run the most recent Adobe updates, so it's Premiere 6.0.5
Is it possible there's something strange about the way the photos have been prepped? Most of them are straight from the client. But I tried running some through PSD to re-save. That hasn't helped but maybe I'm missing something… This is pretty frustrating. Any clues?
The sequence settings match the source footage (straight from Canon 7D mov files). Is there some known issue with stills that I don't know about? Thanks.

Earlier this year, I suffered through the same issue, which became progressively worse over time. In retrospect, I realized it was connected with the minor upgrades of OSX which in turn installed newer versions of OpenCL. Each one got worse, crashing Premiere more and more often. Ultimately, Premiere became useless--couldn't do a damn thing.
I read about a potential conflict with OpenCL, installed CUDA (which had been installed originally, but  apparently lost in a system rebuild), and it worked nearly flawlessly for the past nine months. Yesterday I updated Premiere CS6 and unknown to me, it set the default render engine back to OpenCL. My system was again totally parallized. I deleted all render files, all preferences--anything that might have been corrupt when I realized what was happening. Back to CUDA and instantly my system stabilized.
What a waste of time and frustration. Adobe really needs to get this figured out, or block OpenCL from non-supported systems, or at least offer some semblence of guesswork in the crash messages such as, "You may want to try changing your render engine ..."
Moral of the story? Don't upgrade. If it works, leave it alone.

  • Premiere Pro/Prelude CS6 not working with AVCHD from Canon HF G10

I just tried switching from Final Cut Pro 7/X to Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 and have not been able to get Premiere Pro or Prelude to work with AVCHD footage from my Canon HF G10.  The system runs Mac OS X 10.7.4 on a 3.4 GHz quad-core iMac with 16GB of RAM and 10Gbit/s Thunderbolt RAID for video storage.   Adobe Updater ran yesterday and installed CSXS infrastructure updates which did not fix the problems.
After importing several short (less than 5 minutes each) 1080p30 clips into Premiere Pro, I can scrub over the first few seconds of a clip but afterwards it stalls or mixes in frames from the beginning of the clip.    Rendering 30 seconds of video does not complete in reasonable time, i.e. takes more than 5 minutes.   I figured I would try ingest the footage with Prelude and am running into the same problems.   Scrubbing does not work, only the first few seconds from a clip are available.     When configuring Prelude to transcode on ingest, I am getting "Import XMP failed" errors.   I already spent several hours trying to figure this out.   In the meantime, I finished the project using Final Cut Pro X :-\
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Niels.

Any chance this gets fixed soon?  I'm shooting with an AF-100, and at this point I'm still using Final Cut to transcode my footage so I can have audio.  I've also noticed the video jumps around even when it does have audio.  Prelude has been extremely problematic for me, and it doesn't have a way to bring in clips that returned errors upon importing, I have to write down the clip numbers and bring them in individually.  I've also tried just dropping the file structure from the card straight to the hard drive.  It's a huge problem, and is keeping me from making the switch fully from FCP 7.

  • Premiere Pro CC CUDA rendering working with avi output only

    Hello All,
on my system Premiere Pro CC is only using GPU rendering with AVI output formats.
All other formats like MPEG2, Quicktime, H.264 are unfortunatly fully CPU rendered (=slow).
I just upgraded from trial to payed mode and when Premiere started the CUDA was already enabled (might have activated it during trial already).
But anyway I checked if my card was in the support txt file and also used the cuda.zip auto tool to make sure I had no typo.I did this for Premiere Pro CC and also copied the list into the Adobe Media Encoder directory.
No matter what I did - no hardware rendering.
So I started playing with input and output formats.
It turned out that CUDA is currently only working with AVI output. I installed GPU-Z to check my GPU usage vs CPU usage in the task manager.
As soon as I pick any other output format than AVI - CPU usage during rendering is up to 80-90 and GPU at 0%.
With AVI output GPU ist around 30 and CPU in the 40ties or less as it should be.
    What is going wrong here?
One of my old applications Cyberlink Power Produces 11 is doing the h264 rendering in half the time.
    Any suggestions?
    My System is running on:
Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe with 16GB Ram
Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti (with current Driver - 332.21 )
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit (with Media Center) and latest updates
Current entry in CUDA*.txt file (as printed by Adobe GPUSniffer):
    GeForce GTX 660 Ti
    And already tried:
    GeForce GTX 660Ti
    GeForce GTX 660
    Best regards
    Moongate
P.S. I already followed the instructions on this page http://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/PremiereCS5.htm

I now understand that Premiere Pro CC is only using my GPU for accelerating complex effects during editing giving me the possibility of a live preview during editing?
From the editing in other apps I know that the final rendering can also eat up much time which is why they try to accelerate it via GPU rendering. I see that Premiere is "outsourcing" this task to the Adobe Media Encoder (AME) so that you can continue working during rendering.
But I believe what tricked me into asking this question is that in the AME there is also the option to choose between software and GPU assisted Mercury Engine. So there must be a purpose for it and it sounds resonable that it is for GPU assited rendering.
So when the encoder is not using the GPU to speed up completion of rendering - what is he doing with that option?
Would it not be clever to cut rendering drastically using the GPU - its hard to believe that Adobe is only using it for previews?

  • PREMIERE PRO crashing constantly!

After 10 minutes of editing I get a frozen timeline and sometimes an error message and premiere either close or I have to force quite.  I have crashed 10 plus times today and obviously can not work like this.  Suggestions Adobe?
Here is my system, recently upgraded everything so I could use Creative Cloud btw.  Now it s once again not working properly.

Interesting.  I have a PC with pretty much the same specs - i7 3.4 ghz processor, AMD Radeon 6770 1024 - and I'm getting constant crashes but only after changing my hdd to a sdd.  And once I did that I had to install this pos Prem Pro CC instead of the cs5.1 I was using.  I save like crazy but then you forget for 10 minutes and bam, PP crashes.  I really am not a fan of CC, much preferred CS5.1.  I guess it was a good way to have a few more processes running on the computer for whatever reason.  Perhaps I'll try the advice given you OP, though I'd prefer not to slow down rendering times as getting the SSD was mainly to help speed up rendering times (and it's worked quite well for that).

  • Does Premiere Pro CS5 mercury engine work with my imac 27 inch?

I have a 27 inch imac that I bought 4 months ago.   Yesterday I upgraded my Creative Suite Production Premium CS4 to CS5.   It costs a lot more do to that when you live in Japan (about $300  more).  I installed it all and to my disappoinment I can't access PPro's  new mercury engine on 64 bit.  I read the specs and I thought my  computer is capable.  Can somebody please tell me if my specs are good?   imac is a total disappoinment in that they will not replace any  parts!!!   I have two very expensive items (imac 27 inch and Adobe  CS5).  Can I not utilize the mercury engine in P PRo?  I will be so sad  if that is the case.   I've called apple and they say they won't change  the graphic card or CPU if those are my problems. Which means I'll have  two great things, my new imac and new Adobe soft and I can't use them  together.
Anyways, here are my specs.  I hope someone can shed  some light on this matter for me.  I'm hoping I just don't have my PP settings right.  Thanks in advance!

Thank you kindly for your reply.  I figured I was only able to use software only MPE as that is why it is all greyed out in my preferences.  I was hoping I had not done something simple that would fix the issue.
So after reading a lot on here about MPE my question is this:
Is soft only MPE 64 bit?  Is it still significantly better than my CS4 P.Pro that I had or did I just waste a crap of money on the upgrade?  What does soft only MPE have to offer?  so far my editing doesn't really seem to be much faster but I haven't put it to test yet. And of course, the render line is always red and not yellow like all those fantastic videos show when they're bragging about how cool Hardware accelerated MPE is.
If feel like I got robbed.
    Thanks for your time.
Oh, one more thing.  In the near future, "could" a driver update for my ATI Radeon HD 4850 possibly fix this issue?  imacs will NOT replace CPU or GPU.  For that, I am really, really annoyed.  The main reason I bought this computer with the specs was to use Adobe at its best.

  • 2011 MacBook Pro shuts down while working with blu ray disks

I am trying to backup my blu ray disks to digital formats in the event that a disk is damaged. I am using an early 2011 MacBook Pro with OSX 10.8.5 with a Samsung SE-506 external blu ray writer. I have been using handbrake to rip DVD's, but downloaded Make MKV to handle blu rays. I successfully ripped one blu ray disk last night. Once before that, and four times after, the computer shut down after failing to read the disk. When it restarts, a gray screen reports that the computer experienced and error and had to shut down. I believe this has something to do with the fact that OSX does not natively support blu ray disks. The disk drive is plugged into one of two USB slots in the computer. The other slot has a USB hub with two external hard drives and some other devices connected to it.
So far, the computer has failed to recognize the disk, and nothing comes up in Make MKV. The last time I tried, the computer recognized the disk, Make MKV read it and showed the titles. When I tried to rip the disk, the process failed. After another attempt, the computer shut down. This has never happened while using the original disk drive, or while using DVD's in the external drive.
I spoke with Samsung support, and they have no record of this being a problem. So, where do I go from here? I have quite a few disks to rip, so I am hoping this issue can be resolved. I have searched around, but cannot find any information on this problem happening to someone else.

    Hi lilliputian apple,
If you are having issues with your Mac spontaneously shutting down, especially with externally connected hardware, you may find the following article helpful:

  • Photoshop CS6 Crashing and acting erratically while working with 3D

So,.. CS6 keeps crashing and doing crazy things on me while working on my 2D/3D composite digital room setting. It seems to me like what's causing most of the crashing is the materials. Here's the problems:
    - Crashes constantly while simply trying to select a material from the 3D panel
    - Sometimes places meshes in a totally different spot in the scene and dissallows me to move them elsewhere
    - Meshes are gone when opening the file, and I can't get them to reappear
So, as you may assume, I'm trying to stay composed at this point. My artwork would look great if, well, 3D in CS6 would simply WORK. But I'm remaining calm, and consulting you all..
I'm modeling, texturing, and UV mapping the 3D room objects (such as tables, chairs, hutches, etc.) in Maya 7, exporting as .obj files and placing into PS, and merging them with the scene layer in order for everything to have consistent lighting.
I've also tried taking the 3D settings to Basic and the shadow quality to low, in case the crashes are due to cpu performance. I've also went and got the latest update for PS CS6
    Here's some system specs:
    Win7 Home Premim, 64 bit
    2.8ghz Intel Core i7
    8gb ram ddr3
    NVidia GeForce 310 512 mb
    Thanks in advance!
    Andy

Unfortunately I can't offer you all that much direct 3D help EXCEPT to say that in all the time I have been working with Photoshop CS6 Extended's 3D stuff (on two different systems) I have seen more or less stability with the 3D facilities depending on my display driver versions.  At one point earlier this year, while on the ATI Catalyst 12.3 driver I believe it was, I could edit 3D stuff literally for hours without faults.  At the moment, with 12.8 (and a different ATI card than I had before), most stuff works but there are still cases where I can cause it to crash.
Display driver failures can end up looking like anything but display driver issues, which is why I mentioned the above.  To you it may seem like Photoshop is buggy as hell, but really it's something about your system causing it.
I realize my ATI experience is only marginally useful to you, but it's entirely possible a display driver upgrade could help you.  In your case you'll want to visit nVidia.com and see if they have released an updated display driver version for your card.
    Good luck!

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 constantly crashes when importing video files

I have not used Premiere Pro in a while, but recently when I tried to import video files (from .m4v, .mp4 and .mov) the program stops working, the "importing" window doesn't progress and I get the rainbow wheel of "death".
I read some other posts where some are having similar situations and some users suggested moving the file from an external hard-drive to an internal one (I have a 1TB external hard-drive) but that didn't do squat either.
Once the program is frozen I'm forced to "force quit" the program.
Does anyone know what I can do?

I am having the same problems, but my program locks up when trying to playback .MTS files that are shot natively on my GH2.  It will not render or export anything & when you try and scrub or playback footage it gets the spinning wheel of death.  To finish my last project, I had to transcode all the .MTS files to .MP4 files and it worked fine.  Also, anytime I shut down PP, I have to force quit the program for it to shut down.  Here are the detailed info you asked for...
What version of Premiere Pro? Include the minor version number (e.g., Premiere Pro CS5.5 with the 5.5.2 update).Premiere Pro CC (trial) 7.1.0 - 141 (because I uninstalled CS5, 5.5, & 6 thinking they may be the problems.
Have you installed the recent updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.) YES, up to date
What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.6.8"---not just "Mac”. OSX 10.9
What kind(s) of source footage? When telling about your source footage, tell us about the codecs, not just the container types. For example, "H.264 in a .mov container", not just "QuickTime”..MTS files from a GH2
If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)?It tells me that it is an unknown error (I do not have a copy of the original error message)
What were you doing when the problem occurred?Trying to playback (wheel of death), Trying to Render and export (starts rendering, then just sits there and then gives the unknown error)
Has this ever worked before?I have worked on this projects for a few months, then just out of the blue it started with these problems about 1 week ago.
What other software are you running?none
Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed?some from Video Copilot and Plural eyes 3 (NOT used on this project)
Tell us about your computer hardware. Be especially certain to tell us about third-party I/O hardware (e.g., AJA, Matrox, Blackmagic, MOTU).
    iMac 27in Mid 2011 3.4 Intel Core i7 16 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 AMD Radeon HD6970M 2048 MB OSX 10/9 (13A603)
No external devices, except a external hard drive.  I changed from a Thunderbolt Seagate 1TB (single 7200 RPM) to a Drobo Mini 2 TB RAID 5 in the MIDDLE of this problem, thinking the issue was the drive was to slow to keep up - NOT the case… it still happens with the new drive.
Are you using Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration?I am not completely sure to be honest - I believe it is the factory settings.
Does the problem only happen with your final output, with previews, or both?both!

Unfortunately do not know the operating system since I never updated anything and I can't get in to it.
    Thanks for your assistance.

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Premiere Pro CS 3 stops working

Hello, I have been using Premiere Pro CS 3 without a problem on a 3 year old PC with Windows Vista, 32 bit, 4 GB RAM. The other day, in the middle of editing (I was about 17 minutes into my timeline), the program crashed, and later so did my computer. The computer is up and running again, but I cannot get Premiere to open properly now. I get the splash screen, and some of the little "retrieving this and that" notices flash briefly, then I get the basic program frame with the Premiere Title at the top and an otherwise white screen, and then it closes. It does this regardless of whether I open it from the start menu, or by opening the actual premiere file. I reinstalled the program without any improvement at all. It was working fine, now it's not. Any ideas out there?
Desperately yours, and thanks in advance,
    Steve Forrest

    John,
Thanks for your suggestion. (I know how to do this as I have used the same keystroke combo while working with InDesign)I tried numerous times, though, and I just couldn't get it to "catch." Is there some way to delete the preferences file (or reset it) by navigating through the file structures?
My brother is a serious geek in Berkeley. We used Crossloop and he tried a bunch of things, including:
    Uninstall and reinstall QuickTime
    Create a new account.
He used the command prompt and did a lot of rooting around that I didn't really understand, but he renamed several files, but it didn't change anything. (He went after the VST folder, if I recall, and also went after to folders in the Adobe Premiere Pro directory, one called Premiere Pro, and the other called PremierePro (without a space). Sorry I can't be more descriptive, but I'm not any kind of professional. He had googled our problem and was basically trying out various of the fixes that people had listed, including some from within the greater Adobe world.
So, still nothing. The weirdest part of this is that it was working fine, and had been for years, then all of a sudden it crashed, and now it doesn't even start up right. It's possible that one of the clips had some screwy time code info, but I don't see how that would account for this, and I'm not even sure that it's even the case.
The only new piece of behavior is that, while we were doing all this and trying to restart the program, I am also getting a screen telling me that my product is no longer licensed, or something like that (I didn't copy the exact wording). I don't know why that would be the case, and I'm not aware of the product "expiring" in that way. Again, totally new.
I'm all ears if you have any other suggestions. Thanks so much for your time.
    Steve Forrest
PS I have purchased a Windows 7 upgrade. I will be trying a complete reinstallation of Premiere, then will be doing the Windows 7 upgrade, then will try another complete reinstallation of Premiere (assuming the earlier doesn't work to change this.)

  • "Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 has stopped working" but was working fine a week ago...

On my desktop (Dell XPS 8300), I keep getting the error message "Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 has stopped working" when openng up a previously created project or trying to create a new one in Premiere Pro CS6.
On my laptop (MS Surface Pro 2), I can load projects and edit them, but I cannot export media.  When I try, it just sits there and does nothing.  I've also tried sending it to Media Encoder, but that doesn't help either.  Sometimes, it crashes too.
I'm running Windows 8.1 on both with the latest updates installed.
Oddly, this started roughly around the same time on both computers.
I've tried uninstalling and re-installing, but that didn't help.
I've run the Windows troubleshooter and that didn't help either.
I've tried running as an administrator, and running the program in compatibility mode for Windows 8, 7 and Vista - that doesn't solve the issue either.
At this point, I can't do any work and am even considering paying for CC even though I just dropped $700 on CS6 last year, but I'm wondering if that would even solve the issue, or if the CC version would also not work...

    >started roughly around the same time on both computers
Most likely cause is a Windows update that changed "something" about the video system
Check the vendor site (NOT Windows update) for a newer video driver
