Premiere Pro creating impossibly huge project files

I am confused as to why Premiere Pro CS6 is creating projects files that are so enormous they either crash my computer while saving them, or when I try to open them again after closing them, they simply will not open because they are too big. I have NEVER seen Premiere Pro CS5 create a project file that was, for example, 1.75GB in size. Now, I can't even edit a two minute video without eventually losing everything because the file size becomes unmanageable.
I thought it might be an issue with Magic Bullet Looks 2.0, as I noticed the file would grow enormously every time I added an effect to a clip. Not sure. Anyone else having this problem, with or without Looks or other otherwise 100% compatible plug-ins?

I too am having the exact same problem, but the only effect I've been using is cross fade (both the transition effect and jut dragging the opacity down. I think it might be the drag on effect now that I'm hearing everyone else's issues. At first I had thought it might be a nesting issue (the main thing I've been using PrPro CS6 for is cutting together animatics with ref footage, so a lot of individual images laid over eachother) but that did really make sense. The odd thing I've noticed, thoug, is that it seems to be increasing by a factor of two once it really starts getting gigantic (which I can tell because I version constantly). Isn't that a bit... I don't know, odd? I mean if this is infact the case. The size where they really start to seem unwieldly is at about 250mb. I'm trying to open that file now, remove a whole bunch of the crossfades, and see if it has an effect on the file size.
I have been nearly patient enough yet to wait for the 500m files to even re open.
Tell me, for you guys, does the load project bar always stutter at the same place, like, right below the "Pr" in "Load Project"?

  • Why does Adobe Premiere Pro modify original footage/asset files (e.g. mov)? (CS6)

    Background:
A colleague had given me a large 33Gb .mov for use in a project, I put this file on a backup drive.
I made an identical copy of this 33Gb .mov file and placed it in a folder that I'd use to work on a Premiere Pro Project.
I ran Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 and dragged in the 33Gb .mov file into the Sequence (imported it)
Premiere Pro CS6 started conforming the file.
After it had finished, I noticed that it's Modified Date was just now i.e different to the Modified Date on the original copy of the file on the backup drive (see step 1)
I ran a BeyondCompare check between the .mov file on the backup drive (see step 1) and the one that the Premiere Pro project was using (step 2, 3) and Beyond Compare reported they were different.
I had initially thought it was unrelated file corruption of some kind, but I have checked this several times and got the same outcome, so it's definitely Premiere Pro deliberately modifying the file.
So I am puzzled: these are supposed to be the same file.
Why would there be a need for Adobe Premiere Pro to modify the footage?
What does it do to the file?
Would it not be better to create a separate file if necessary?
I can accept this if that's how it works and it's good to know that it was Premiere Pro deliberately modifying the files and not corruption (so my hardware ought to be healthy). But it makes more sense to me if Premiere Pro made separate modified copies for its own use. Modifying the file as it does hinders my process for checking the integrity of backups; if the original asset footage files were the same as earlier copies then it would be easy to know that the backups are OK.
    Thoughts?

Definitive Answer (I believe): It's all about this setting, "Write XMP ID To Files On Import" - which confirms that Adobe Premiere Pro is deliberately modifying the .mov file: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/preferences.html#WSE3BD4A43-7022-4fe6-97F5-95313 935347B
These posts give some background as to why having this setting enabled would be beneficial: one benefit being to be able to skip conforming files by matching the conformed file with the original using the embedded XMP tag :-

  • Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Customizing the Project panel

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/customizing-project-panel.html

Honestly, you did not get my point.
What I am saying is, that the icon view has no rational order of files. Why is that?
At least there should be a way to figure out, even if it is not possble to alter the sort criteria, in which order the files are listed in icon view.
If I serach for a spezific file, sure I can use list mode, but what about "there were a couple of frames with that car, and it was shot after file X … a just let me fastly scrub trough the footage in that brandnew icon view … wait … where is … aehm .. ok, I scrub trough every file."
Do not get me wrong, I love the new icon view possibilities so much, that I want to actually use them.
Please just fix it Adobe, or tell me how to decrypt the sort mechanism.

How should an editor use this view seriously?
Honestly, to sort manually.  If you want an auto sort, use List view.

Can I use Adobe Premiere Pro to convert Camcorder MOD files to MPEG files?

If you are on CC2014 probably not. It does not get interpreted correctly.
Premiere and previous versions does not support MOD files.
Best is to convert to avi

  • Will Premiere Pro CC support Cinema DNG files?

Will Premiere Pro CC support Cinema DNG files?

That would be nice, but my guess is that if support was built in, Adobe would have made mention of it as a new feature.
Given that Blackmagic is releasing a $1000 DC camera that records CinemaDNG to SD cards, it sure would be nice if PP cold work with them natively.  People, please keep filing that feature request.

  • Premiere Pro is creating numerous huge temporary files

    Hi,
When I am using Premiere Pro, it seems to create a new file in appdata/local/temp called Photoshop Temp 5148368 (or another random number). These files are about 20-40GB each and cause my disk to fill more or less instantly. I have Photoshop installed, but the files are still created even when Photoshop itself hasn't been run.
I've cleaned the media cache but this is a different set of files, can I stop them being created?
    Thanks

Gigabyte, and there's sometimes 3 or 4 of them. By the looks of it, it creates a new file every time the app is closed/opened, but I agree there's no reason that I can see why it would be that big. The files that are being worked on are nowhere near that size. It does only seem to be recent as well, so not entirely sure if it's something that we've changed.
    Thanks

  • Huge project file in Premiere CS6

    Hello,
The project weight is almost 2 GB.
Is taking hours open my project file.
I have to send a edit by tomorrow but right now I don't know if I will be able to open my project to start editing.
I have read in your forums this is a common bug but nobody say how can be solved, I already lost all day waiting and I can't be waiting all night to start the editing at early morning, this is totally insane.
I'm editing in a Macbook Pro Retina with 16 GB of RAM.
I edited a lot in this computer with this software version ( CS6 ) and never got this problem.
In this project are sequences with Magic Bullet effects and Warp Stabilizer but this can't be an excuse, must be a solution for this because I already lost 8 hours looking to my screen.

    Hello again,
After the storm I will explain what happend.
I had to wait until morning to have open the project, and there was another complication, Premiere was acting weird and incredibly slow so what I did was save the projec with another different name, and something unexpected occurred, the new project weight was 1.55GB and the first one went down from 2GB to 100MB, thats magic don't you think?....
So after that I created I new project and I imported all the sequences from my first project, I could finish the edit one day later.....
Would be great know from the Adobe people they are into this problem and will be solved in next patches.
Sorry for my english and thank you very much for the responses.

  • Adobe Premiere CS6 'Create new Trimmed Project' Crash with .MXF files

Yesterday I started to back up all our students work, and found that the "Create New Trimmed Project" no longer works in CS6 with .MFX files.
Adobe Premiere CS6.0.3,  crashes when I try to "Create New Trimmed Project" under "Project Manager"
This only happens when there are .MXF files in the Sequence.
As we use Panasonic P2 cameras at this university, this is a problem, as this is the format that they shoot in.
As a test I have made a Project with only one .MXF file placed on the sequence, and it crashes.
This happens on my Macs and Windows machines with Adobe Premiere CS6 .
Adobe Premiere CS5.5 works fine, and does not crash.
    Unfortunately I cant save a CS6 project as a CS5.5
If you don't have any .MXF files to test this,
You can make your own .MXF files by exporting any video file as "MXF OP1a" or "P2 Movie" Format, (the Preset setting is irrelevant - any preset will cause it)
    P.S.
Using "Collect files and Copy to new Location" under "Project Manager" works fine, but does not reduce project size as much.

I also discovered this behavior last summer.  Unfortunately the best (lame) answer I could find was that "Some formats, such as Long GOP based media files, cannot trim media, or add handles."  Source:  http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS1c9bc5c2e465a58a91cf0b1038518aef7-7c72a .html
That's not very specific, but in my case at least (and it sounds like in your case, too) .MXF may be another file type that cannot be trimmed.  If I remember correctly, the answers I got from others was that they were able to export fine.  My machine (and maybe yours) has an issue that nobody else seems to have encountered.  So none of the prescribed remedies allowed me to move forward in this regard.
After much searching, asking and several suggestions from various Premiere communities, I gave up and moved on.
Use Remove Unused and then Collect Files and Copy to New Location.  At least that can help you if you have a lot of clips.  In my case, it didn't help much, because my very short clips were edited from very long takes, so as Premiere sees it, not much was "unused".
Be aware that "Project Manager does not copy and collect After Effects compositions that are dynamically linked to an Adobe Premiere Pro project. Project Manager does save the Dynamic Link clip in the trimmed project as an offline clip, however."
Wish I could offer you more.

  • How to get Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 to Recognize Proxy files created on an Omneon Server

I work for a non profit at Rice University. For years we have been shooting multicam and recording to an Omneon Server system. The Omneon creates its own proxy files which we used to just load onto Fincal Cut 7. We have now upgraded our computers and programs and are using Premiere Pro CS6. When I load the Proxy file created by Omneon, Premiere won't recognize the file as a proxy, it will just tell me there is no video or audio attached to the file.
    Thank you

    Thank you,
    The formate is MXF : Apple XDCAM HD 1080i60 (35 Mb/s VBR), 1440 × 1080, Millions 24-bit Integer (Little Endian), 4 Channels, 48.000 kHz 29.7 fps
The Proxy has a QT wrapper it looks like but won't play on the latest version of QT I have to use QT7.
    Thank you

  • Can Premiere Pro create a 3D bluray from Sony HDR-TD20 3D files?

I bought a 3D camcorder from Sony over a year ago. Has anyone successfully burned a 3D bluray disc (hardware / Asus bluray disc burner) using Premiere Pro?

    Hi Peter Krug 53,
Welcome to the Encore forum. I have not done this myself, but I don't see why you can't create one, as long as your player supports it. You do need third party software. Check out this video, although it's a bit dated, it will give you a detailed look at the 3D stereoscopic workflow: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/davtechtable/3d-stereoscopic-editing-with-premierepro-cs5-winosx /

  • Premiere pro crashes when opening project

Premiere pro project crashes when opening. I have an imac running OS 10.7.3 (8GB Ram, AMD Radeon HD 6970 2048mb) and have Premiere Pro 5.5.2. I have had 2 projects that I have worked on for hours and saved numerous times and then when I closed pp and tried to reopen the file the screen goes white and then crashes. Please help.

    Ann, THANKS for replying!
If I open a brand new project, which I could do before, and then IMPORT a previous project, it works and I can edit and export the project.  However, it did crash upon trying to save it and I still can not just open a previously created project.  When I do I get an error message that Says: "Premiere has encountered an error and needs to close down.  We will attempt to save your project."
Do you or anyone else have any ideas?

  • Can Premiere Pro CC work with mpeg files?

I tried to work with *.mpeg files, but can import them into a project.
Can Premiere Pro CC impoert and export mpeg (1, 2)  files?

    Lucky ...
As shooternz says, yes ... although if you are new, you may not realize that when you start a project, you have to manually "create a sequence" first, THEN you can add clips to the sequence. Until you have a sequence on the timeline, simply dragging & dropping from either the source monitor or project/browser panel to the timeline area will not work. Nor trying add a clip to the timeline either by the properties panel (after right-clicking on a clip) or the top menus.
Create a new sequence on the timeline, then ... you can drag & drop from either the source or project/browser panels, right-clicking on footage and using the property menus, all now works.
Steps to create a new sequence ... "ctrl(cmd) - N" with keyboard to create a new sequence, or in project/media browser panel ... right-click and choose "new -> sequence", or in that panel click on the piece of paper with a folded-corner icon (lower right corner) then choose "new->sequence" or of course, "File->new->sequence" from the main menu bar.

  • Rough Cut "send to Premiere Pro" opens PP but no files.

"send to Premiere Pro" opens Premiere Pro but the project is empty.
Also "append to rough cut" in Prelude is grayed out/unavailable.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled both Prelude and Premiere Pro but nothing has changed.
Checked for updates and there are none.
    OS 10.6.8
    Premiere Pro 6.0.2
    Prelude 1.0

Do you have the Rough Cut open in the timeline panel? If the Rough Cut is closed the Append to Rough Cut command will be greyed out.
Does the File>Export command work to create a Premiere Pro project?
When you try the Send to Premiere Pro command and it fails, do you see any errors in the Window>Events panel?
