Premiere Pro CS4: Timecode issues (Scene Detect, Free Run)

Hi folks,
I am most familiar with Premiere Pro CS3. In the past, I have created multi-camera sequences that are synchronised by timecode. I have been shooting using the Free Run timecode feature across all cameras, as to maintain a sync'd timecode.
Now that I am using Premiere Pro CS4 at work, I am running into a few issues in preserving my timecode values during capture. I have recorded HDV footage using two Sony Z7's. I downconvert the HDV footage into DV upon capturing - this is so that I can use the scene-detect feature, and still supposedly preserve the timecode for each media file. I captured all of the tapes using scene-detect, and the timecode values were correct for each media file captured.
Having saved, closed, and reopened my Premiere Project the next day, the timecode values for the majority of the media files have been reset (ie, they all start at "0:00:00:00". This is very odd! Only a few of the media files have retained their correct timecode values.
Has anyone else experienced this? Could they please shed some light on this problem or quirk? Am I taking the wrong approach in capturing/organising media? I am following the same procedure as I had done in PPro CS3.
I have since deleted the Media Cache/Preview Files, requiring Premiere to re-index, and re-conform the media files. The timecode values are still incorrect. When I select all of my media files and tell them to go 'offline', the correct timecode values re-appear.
Many thanks for your help,
Andrew

Does anyone have an answer to this problem?? I think I am having the same problem. I don't have as much experience as the others on the
forum, but basically what I tried to do was filming a multi-camera event in free run timecode, then
captured in HDV split, and assumed I could get Premiere to align the clips accordingly. Anyone have any idea how to do this????
Any help is appreciated,
Thanks,
Aaron

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 - Export issue.

    Hello to the Adobe Community!
Maybe someone here can help me out with some Premiere issues.
    I am using Premiere Pro CS4 4.2.1.
    I'm on Windows 7 64 (Ultimate N).
    My system is:
    Intel Core i5CPU [email protected]
    3GB RAM
I have updated all Adobe software, and my drivers.
I've had a good look over the forums and I found this article. It's very useful, and hoping it would be my saviour, I went through all the advice given.
    Still no luck!
I'm trying to export the media from Premiere to Media Encoder.
    My sequence settings are:
    1280 x 720
    Square pixel aspect ratio
    25fps
    48000HZ - Stereo
    My render settings are:
    MPEG2 - DVD
    PAL HIGH QUALITY
Everything else is left to the default setting.
When I try to encode via the Media Encoder, it gets to about 1/3rd of the way through and I get a message:
    'Encoding Failed
    Error compiling movie.
    Unknown error.
I have also tried, as per previous posts, to use the Adobe Dynamic Link, both from Premiere out to Encore, and importing in from Premiere when I'm in Encore.
Still no luck! I get an 'encode failed' message when I try to transcode it. I'm pulling out my hair with this one.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
NB: This is my first post on this forum, so apologies if I have missed anything out.
Thanks in advance for any advice,
    Em.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions - Evan I think you might be right on the memory issue.
I tried one last thing - running Premiere in compatibility mode as an administrator.
Again, it failed after about 7 minutes. It's quite a complicated project, but it's only 14 minutes long.
The strange thing is that although it doesn't seem to render on my work pc, it renders on my home pc, which has similar specs:
    CPU: Intel Core i5 760 2.8GHZ 8MB
    MEMORY: 4GB (2x2GB) PC12800 DDR3/1600mhz Dual Channel Memory
MOTHERBOARD: Asus P7P55-M Intel P55 Chipset
    NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 1GB
I forgot to say that my work pc, listed above uses an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT card.
Do you think that 1GB can really make all the difference?
Sorry if that's a stupid question, I don't have a massive amount of technical knowledge.
    Cheers!
    Em.

  • Premiere Pro CS4 having issues with Windows 7

Hello, I've been using Premier Pro CS4 on my new Sony Vaio that is running Windows 7. I experience slowdown occasionally when editing videos and Premiere has begun to crash a lot and I cannot export any of my projects without a complete crash of Premiere. My laptop has all of the required specifications and I cannot figure out what's going on. Thanks for your help.

  • Premiere Pro CS4: Output Issue - codec and image size

I am having an issue when outputing a video file from Prem Pro to Media Encoder.  The dimensions of the input video are the usual 720x576.  The output I need is 390x390 to match my project.  By choosing the Sorenson 3 video codec I am able to adjust the size from 720x576 to 390x390.  However, it also applies black bars to the top and bottom of the image.  I don't want this.  If I choose the DV PAL video codec the black bars are removed in the output but I do not have control over the image size.
In Prem Pro 1.5 the media encoder allowed for this and I was able to create a cropped video image (390x390) without black bars.  By selecting the zoom option the image was fitted into the window size.  There is no zoom option in CS4 in Media Encoder.  This is very frustrating!
    Any help would be appreciated...
    Thanks, Neil

This is odd indeed, and I cannot recall having read of such. The tips were just the general things that one normally checks out, when there are audio issues, so nothing specific to this behavior.
Now, as a test, you might want to try ASIO4ALL, linked in the article above. Usually, it will get audio, where the Realtek, or Creative driver will not. Again, this is as a test, just to see if by-passing the Realtek driver will help. Do not forget to set the Audio Hardware ASIO to ASIO4ALL in Input and Output. Then test. If it has zero affect, then just uninstall it, and change the setting back.
Good luck, and wish I had more to help,
    Hunt
PS - other than mechanical/electrical things like the audio chip heating up and a connection failing, I just cannot think of something that would cause this behavior. Maybe download and run SpeedFan, a great little free utility, and monitor the temps for all components with sensors.

  • Adobe premiere pro CS4 quality issues

    Hi there,
i've been struggling with this issue for a while,.
i hope that someone here can help me out!
I am making a promoting movie for a dance school here,
but as i am editing i have to use automatic quality because when i set the preview on high it will stutter,
that's not even the problem because thats only a preview
but when i try to export it,
it makes the quality really bad,
in previeuw i can read whats on the screen
and now there are A LOT more pixels, making the text unreadable,...
this is really freaking me out
i've attatched a file of a screenshot so you guys can see what i'm talking about.^^
i've been trying exporting all kinds of ext like avi,mpg,HD,H.265 etc etc..
    Please help me 0_o

To add to Eddie's recs. I suggest doing ALL of the scaling/re-sizing outside of the NLE. I've found that the algorithms used in Photoshop are superior to those in Premiere (through CS3 - do not know if CS4 improved these). The quality difference should be noticable on critical viewing. Re-sizing BEFORE Importing, also reduces the workload on the NLE. Just a few Acitons in PS, and you can batch re-size your entire load of stills.
I take Eddie's advice for the vast majority of my still images, and if I need to pan on a zoomed out image, will re-size that/those up to exactly what I need, above the frame resolution/size. The majority do go with exactly what the Project Presets are.
    Good luck,

  • Adobe premiere pro cs4 capturing issue.

The camera that I have is a sony hdv cam £1200, my pc is a quad core system with a firewire port on the back of the motherboard (new system).  My friend who used it previously used it on his apple mac and had no problems in capturing. This is the first problem, I plug in the firewire cable with no notification of new hardware installing(dont know if there usually is).  I load up cs4, hit F5 and it states that the device is offline.  The settings on the camera, as far as i can see, are all setup aswell as well as the preferences on premiere.
Thanks for reading and if anyone can shed some light on this then thanks!

    Welcome to the forum.
I'd suggest starting a new thread, so as to not get folk confused on your particular system and issues. Heck, I have trouble not being confused with but one system.
When you do post, the more info that you can provide, the fewer questions that will be asked. This ARTICLE will give you some tips. In your case, you would add all necessary info on your camera too.
    Good luck,

  • Adobe premiere pro cs4 audio issue.

Whenever I import a full movie i.e Predator, Halloween 2, Total Recal, the video is fine but the audio is missplaced and doesnt import the full audio that comes with the video.  It starts playing the audio but is heavily out of sync and only imports a certain amount of the audio with still a fair huge amount of audio missing.
Thanks for reading and if anyone could help then it will be much appreciated
    Thanks

    Welcome to the forum.
This is common with muxed MPEG source files, like from VOB's. Also, there could well be copy protection on those commercial titles, that will mess things up too. I will not get into the © issues here. This ARTICLE will give you some background on VOB's, and make suggestions for ways to address their Import.
For OOS, this ARTICLE will give you tips on fixing it.

  • Display Issues in Premiere Pro CS4

I'm having some weird display glitches in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 in the timeline area. I attached a picture that shows what it looks like. This happens whenever I drag clips on the timeline and it makes it so it takes a lot longer to edit my videos.
I'm really hoping that Apple or Adobe fixes this issue. I really can't afford to upgrade my creative suite to CS 5.5! And I would prefer to stick with OS X Lion.
Well it looks like I can't upload an image. Any ideas?

Keep in mind that the following sustained transfer rates - as a rough rule of thumb - apply:
    SATA & eSATA: 80 - 100 MBps
    Firewire 800:       50 - 60 MBps
    Firewire 400:       30 - 35 MBps
USB2:                20 - 25 MBps (depending on other USB devices connected it could be even lower.)
I agree that your storage capacity with 1 TB is enough, but the interface is too slow. If you do not have an eSATA port on you Vaio, you can get a Xpress card to eSATA connector with two eSATA ports to cover that. Also keep in mind that the C drive may be a 4200 or 5400 RPM disk and not 7200.
Mininmum requirements state: a DEDICATED 7200 RPM disk and while your USB disk is 7200, it lacks in the sustained transfer rate when compared to SATA or eSATA. BTW I think Adobe should explicitly mention SATA or better.
Above I mentioned for USB depending on other USB devices attached. USB shares the bandwidth among all devices connected. If you have a USB stick connected, a USB receiver for wireless keyboard or mouse, a USB printer, they all have to share the bandwidth and further reduce the sustained transfer rates of the USB disk.
Hope this explains it a bit.

  • QTFC Issues with Premiere Pro CS4?

    Hello there.
So recently, I have been having issues with my adobe programs. I have the Master Collection CS4 and when I launch programs like After Effects, it tells me the following.
"QuickTime functions will be disabled because a compatible version of QuickTime could not be found"
and here's my real issue. When I go to launch Premiere Pro CS4, I get the following error.
"Adobe Premiere Pro.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point QTCF_CFUniCharGetUnicodePropertyDataForPlane could not be located in the dynamic library link QTCF.dll"
I click OK and it pops up again, then premiere launches. How do I get rid of this error? I have tried reinstalling Master Collection and Quicktime but that didn't help.
I cannot afford to reformat computer as I'm very busy and need my programs to work.
Thankyou for your time and support.
    -Matthew.

To answer your question. I had the same problem that you had. I was using Quicktime 7. So I downgraded by downloading Quicktime 6.4
    Here's a link:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120297
So I installed QT 6.4, and the error message is no longer there. But there is another issue, I try to import or find a file that is a .mov and it says File format not supported. Which is weird because you get that if you don't have quicktime installed. That may be an entirely different problem. But hope this at least helps you answer your question.

  • Graphics Card issues with Premiere Pro CS4

    Hey there,
I've placed the screenshot of my problem at the bottom of this post.
I'm having lots of issues with premiere pro CS4 and editing videos since I upgraded to Windows 7. I have some .mpg and .MP4 videos. Both of which play fine in WMP, VLC, WinAmp, VirtualDJ etc. But when I load them into PPRO CS4, as you can see in the screenshot they go green and pink. And they don't move. I.e you see one still image and hear only audio.
Now a fix I have found for this is to uninstall my graphics card. But this is no way an option to edit videos, as the resoultion goes from 1920 x 1080 to 1024 x 768.
I should add that I am runnig the following system:
    Dell Vostro 1000 Latpop
    Windows 7 Ultimate 32Bit
    2.00Ghz AMD Sempron Processor
    2GB RAM
ATI Radeon XPress 1150 Graphics card
I have the latest graphics card drivers installed. I am just wondering what the problem is, and a potential fix. Would be great to hear any advice,
    Regards,
    Adam.

OK, here are some other things to think about:
ATI/AMD Catalyst seems to have an issue with one of the latest versions, maybe rollback to an earlier version.
Depending on your OS, check Hardware Acceleration (though this usually affect smoothness of playback) in Control Panel>System>Hardware>Advanced.
    Check your OpenGL settings.
In Catalyst, turn OFF any GPU Acceleration
That's about all that I can think of for now, and those are shots in the dark.

  • Windows 7 X64 & Premiere pro CS4 issues

    Hi All,
I have a Dell Precision 690 with a clean install of Windows 7 X64 and a new (1st time) install of Production Suite CS3 (excluding Premeiere Pro CS3 and Encore CS3) and a new (1st time) install of Premiere Pro CS4 with Encore CS4.
After starting a new HD project (1920 x 1080 29.98) if I try to open any (old or new) sequence, the program does a "serious error" hicup and has to shut down.
Everytime I run Premiere Pro CS4 and try to load a project previously saved to the raid array that was created under XP Pro 32bit (previous life) I get this message saying that the scratch discs are write protected and would I like to change to the default (C drive) location for scratch discs. Within the original project the scartch disc was the external raid array. I can access that raid no problem from windows explorer and read and write to it.  Also all the clips within the project are read from the raid so I don't get it. Anyone come across anything like this before?

try opening the project, clicking OK when it tells you that the scratches are write protected, and then when it opens, go to the top menu bar and click Project > project settings > Scratch discs  and re-point your scratches to the location you want them.  Save, and you should be good to go.

  • Premiere Pro CS4 indexing and conforming issue

    Hello guys,
Is it normal for Premiere Pro CS4 to always conform and index the clips?
The clips have been conformed and indexed already but the program always do these procedures from time to time?
Is there a setting or preference that I can disable this function or is it something default to the program?>

    Robert,
This is quirk of Dynamic Link between AE and PPro. For some reason, even if your AE comp has no audio, DL suggests a phantom audio track to PPro when that comp is DL'd and every time thereafter when you change the comp in AE. This results in reconforming the same audio track (real or implied) multiple times--a side effect of the "liveness" that is Dynamic Link. The clip automagically appears updated, and so PPro assumes that something has changed, and therefore will abandon the old conformed audio file and create a new one. The result is a pile of CFA and PEK files, most of which are extinct.
At this time, there is no way around this that I've uncovered. I believe it will take a future update of Dynamic Link to make it "smarter", in that it either checks if the audio portion of a comp has changed before reconforming, or it doesn't suggest an audio track if none exists in the comp. I don't know about most people, but I don't do a lot of audio in AE, so this feature would be helpful, I think.
The best approach is to set the PPro preference to create media cache files next to the original (Edit > Preferences > Media > Save Media Cache files next to originals when possible) to On. This way, every so often or at the end of a work day, you can jump into the folder where your AE comp is stored and quickly select and delete all of the CFA and PEK files. Even if you delete the one currently being used by PPro, it will be recreated when you reenter the project.

  • Kodak videos lag in Premiere Pro CS4 timeline

    Hey all,
Apperently there's a bug in Adobe Premiere Pro which makes it difficult to edit videos that were captured in a Kodak camera.
This issue was discussed here before, but even after reading all threads in the subject I could not solve the problem.
I've been trying to convert these files (.mov) to many other formats and codecs with no success.
After a while I got to find this crappy software that claims to specialize in converting Kodak's video files (iOrgSoft Video Converter).  Between many tries of various softwares that was the only one that did  it right. But the software isn't free. The trail version leaves a  watermark on the each video.

I'm looking for another way to convert this file correctly so it will work well in Premiere.
Does anyone have any idea about this?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Moshe.

    Hi,
If CS5 handles this right than I  guess that's about it.
Thanks again for both of you.
This is CS3...with the mainconcept plug in trial ....as mentioned earlier...your original source loaded GREAT into the project...and plays great...etc....
The plug in trial gives that logo thing and has a limit of 5min video I think....although I've exported stuff with this and the logo was NOT on the final export...or was much smaller .....dont know if that would influence you on trying the plug in...
But what I mean to say is with cs3 it works great with the original file you supplied as a sample...
( I used this in another thread here where someone was trying to get timecode to run backwards...which is why you see that timecode thing...)
    good luck with everything !
