Premiere Pro CS4, Timeline distorts when editing

I recently installed my version of PPro CS4 on a new Macbook, and everything runs fine except for one issu
Whenever I try to drop something into the timeline, the entire timeline distorts and won't let me see what's on it other than the specific clip I just moved.
I have some screen shots if that helps.
What it looks like normally.
What it looks like after I move something on the timeline or drop something in there.
The only way I can get it to look correct again is by maximizing the panel with the ~ key, then shrinking it down again.
I'm using AVCHD files, if that matters.
I've tried just about everything, including updating it to the 2.4 version of CS4, and nothing. @AdobeCare and @AdobePremiere were no help and just refered me to the live chat agent who basically told me he can't help me since it's CS4.
Does anyone have any idea why it's doing this?
Thanks.

HI rxa081,
Have you tried:
Resetting preferences
Delete Media Cache Files and the Media Cache Database
Reinstalling the application
Use OS X 10.8, not OS X 10.9
Use different media
Thanks,
Kevin

  • Premiere PRO CS4 really slow when playing back AVCHD

    Hi,
I'm trying to edit some AVCHD (full HD 1920x1080p) but the playback in Premiere PRO CS4 is really really slow. The quality is set to Draft and even resizing the window to 25% keeps it slow.
So I decided to give it a try upgrading my computer. But... what should I upgrade to improve playback and edit my videos smoothly?
    I have this PC specifications
    - DualCore AMD Athlon 64X2 6000+ (3.0 GHz)
    - 2 GB RAM DDR2-800 (Kingston)
    - 1 TB WesternDigital 7200 rpm Hard Drive
    - nVidia GeForce 9800 GT (1 GB Ram)
    Any recommendations would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I need to admint that I made a huge mistake when I got the HD camera in my hands and I started shooting and watching it on a HDTV and it was nicely recorded. But oh surprise!, when I tried to watch it and edit it on my computer it was a nightmare.
Yes, that was what I was alluding to earlier on. It seems to be a good format, but requires an investment in gear to smoothly edit it. I almost feel that there should be a warning label on all cameras, that use it. At least it IS editable, unlike some other formats.
what a nice I/O sub-system article there, thanks for that
I agree, and that is why I try to tell Harm "thank you," whenever I can. He actually did three along the same lines. This was #1, IIRC, with a more generalized followup on the hardware beyond the I/O, and #3 was his setup details for 64-bit OS. All three are well worth reading. He put a lot of time, thought and effort into those. First thing that I did was publish links to each on several Video production fora.
Good luck, and please let us know how your new rig handles the AVCHD material. Before you get too far into things, Harm's other two articles might be of use too.

  • Kodak videos lag in Premiere Pro CS4 timeline

    Hey all,
Apperently there's a bug in Adobe Premiere Pro which makes it difficult to edit videos that were captured in a Kodak camera.
This issue was discussed here before, but even after reading all threads in the subject I could not solve the problem.
I've been trying to convert these files (.mov) to many other formats and codecs with no success.
After a while I got to find this crappy software that claims to specialize in converting Kodak's video files (iOrgSoft Video Converter).  Between many tries of various softwares that was the only one that did  it right. But the software isn't free. The trail version leaves a  watermark on the each video.

I'm looking for another way to convert this file correctly so it will work well in Premiere.
Does anyone have any idea about this?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Moshe.

    Hi,
If CS5 handles this right than I  guess that's about it.
Thanks again for both of you.
This is CS3...with the mainconcept plug in trial ....as mentioned earlier...your original source loaded GREAT into the project...and plays great...etc....
The plug in trial gives that logo thing and has a limit of 5min video I think....although I've exported stuff with this and the logo was NOT on the final export...or was much smaller .....dont know if that would influence you on trying the plug in...
But what I mean to say is with cs3 it works great with the original file you supplied as a sample...
( I used this in another thread here where someone was trying to get timecode to run backwards...which is why you see that timecode thing...)
    good luck with everything !

  • Premiere Pro CS4 Crashes After Photoshop edit.................

    hi,

    Deacon,
Along with the DirectX update, did you install anything else?
After your installation of the DirectX update, did you also update your video and your audio drivers? If not, that would be my first thing to try. Both of those drivers can be rendered obsolete in a heartbeat, and because PrPro interfaces more closely with those, than nearly any other program, it will fail, while simple players, etc. still function.
    Good luck,

  • Premiere Pro CS4 timeline unavailable

I am running PPro CS4.2.1 on a Windows Vista machine. When I open a new file and import media, I am unable to drag the media into the timeline. The timeline window is there but it has no channel infomation and it will not accept media. If I open a previous file from before this began happening, the timeline is available. I have tried using the Reset workspace command, but the timeline is still blanked out. I need some help because I cannot get any projects done with this dilemma. I'm thinking this must be related to the automatic updates from Adobe since this worked before...

Assuming that you established Sequence settings in your New Project, you should have one Timeline (the Sequence) in the Project Panel. You may have to twirl-down your Bins to find it. It is there that you would do the Dbl-click, and not on the media file itself.
Do not recall the default color of Sequences in CS4, but it will be different, than the various media files.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - if you still cannot locate it, attach a screen-cap of your Project Panel with ALL Bins opened to all levels. Someone will be able to point you to the Timeline/Sequence to Dbl-click.

  • Slow Playback in Premiere Pro CS4 (how do you lower preview res?)

Hi everyone, I was just wondering how to lower the playback/preview resolution while3 editing in Premiere Pro CS4? I'm editing 720p video (.mov format, that's what my camera shoots in, so I don't think I can change that). All I can see when I right click the source monitor is "Quality > High, Draft, Automatic". Is there anything else I can select? (kind of like in after effects, where you can set it to 1/2, 1/4, etc.). I've been searching the internet for the better part of the day and all I've found is that 'quality' menu I mentioned earlier.
It's still painfully slow to watch on 'draft', and it doesn't look like it makes that much of a difference in quality. Now, my laptop isn't exactly the rendering beast I'd like it to be, but it can handle 720p [slowly] in after effects so I think it should work in premiere too.
    Thanks!
PS: Any of you experts think this would be a good computer for NLE / rendering effects?
    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7192259&Sku=B69- 1277

    Thanks for clearing that up!
New desktop it is... I'll probably be swapping out the low power drive for a faster one, since Harm mentioned that in his 'building for NLE' thread.
Oh yeah, one more thing: How can I force it to render? For example, I put an HD clip into the timeline, it has a yellow bar along the top of the timeline in it's location, yet when I hit enter it just plays (with annoyingly low fps)?? Going to sequence > render effects in work area doesn't work either.

  • Premiere Pro CS4 "Export Settings" window does not show up.

    Hello,
I've run into a new problem with Premiere Pro CS4. Basically, when I select "File > Export > Media" my Export Settings window doesn't show up. If I click on the Premiere window I hear the beeping sound and nothing happens, if I hit Enter the Export Data window pops up and then Media Encoder opens. So, it seems that my Export Settings window is still open but I can't see it and make the necessary setting changes. It does not appear to be minimized and I can not locate it on my desktop anywhere. This is really frustrating because I was able to see the Export Settings window just a few weeks ago when I was exporting my last project. I've tried changing my screen resolutions but that didnt reveal the Export Settings window.
Does anyone know what is going on here and, more importantly, how I can fix it? I am really stuck here and am working against a deadline. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
    -Ben

    Ben,
THANK YOU!!!! For two days I have been struggling with the exact same issue. And of course it was simple to fix, if I had just thought about it. Thank you for taking the time to post your experience. I had tried all sorts of stuff trying to get everything onto my #1 monitor, with desktop & workspace resets, resizing my display, etc. After reading and printing your post,
    Hitting ALT+Space,
    Down Arrow,
    Enter,
and then pressing the left arrow and watching my Export window slide into view, I was laughing so hard, that I was tearing up. It would have been a month waiting for my second monitor to get repaired to get to see what was still being displayed on this ghost monitor. Each week, I video and edit our church's service and then post three versions (Windows Media Player, Ipod-MP4, MP3 Audio) of it to our web site. I would have been four weeks behind were it not for your post.
    Again, a BIG Thank You!!!

  • Premiere Pro CS4 - editing video from GoPro video camera

I am having a problem trying to edit video from the GoPro camera in Premiere Pro CS4 (PP). Have not been able to get much help from GoPro - they just tell me to speak with Adobe. I think the video codec used by the camera is MJPEG (?). It won't play at all on the timeline. Interestingly it will in After Effects (AE) CS4 and if I export it out of AE as a Microsoft AVI file I can then play it in PP. However if I go straight to Media Encoder and import the clip and then try export the clip via ME as a Microsoft AVI the exported clip from ME won't play in Premiere Pro. I am confused. Does anyone know this camera, it's codec and why it just won't work when directly imported into Premiere Pro but it will when imported directly into After Effects. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Please see a post I made this morning under my screen name BruceERoberts .... details below
I just purchase Adobe Premiere Pro a few days ago - and subsequently updated it to Ver 4.2.1.  A started a new project - I tried to import some video footage I just shot with a GOPro Hemet Cam while skiing at our local mountain.  I can easlily see the clip using Real Media Player - or the Quick Time player.  It is a 10.9 MB ... 7 second MPEG-4 movie clip.  File name is "gopro0030.mp4"
I created a "bin" called video .... then right clicked to import the file.  You can see the file name in the media browser.  But the file would not import.  I received this error message:  "109C ImporterProcessServer.exe  Application Error.  The instruction at "0x05efcac" referenced memory at "0x00000014".  The memory could not be read. CLick OK to terminate."
This is very frustrating - I just purchased the software - and it won't import a 7 second video clip!  It did import still fotos with no problem.  What can I do?
thank you for your attention to this.

  • How To Sync Multiple Timelines in Premiere Pro CS4?

In After Effects, if you create one Comp by dragging another one onto the "New Composition" icon, the timelines of those two comps will be synced (IE: If I jog to 00;00;16;06 in Comp01 and I switch over to Comp02, it will automatically jump to 00;00;16;06 as well).
How do I do this in Premiere Pro CS4? By default, it does not seem to sync up when I drag Sequence One into the timeline of Sequence Two. I have cuts done in the first Sequence that are important to elements I'll add in Sequence Two and I need to easily jump to those cuts.
    Thanks!

Mmm, none of these are really emulating what I can get in AE. No matter what I do in Sequence One, it will not jump to the cuts I need in Sequence Two. However, I think the easiest way to do this is...
Create markers at the cut points of Sequence One
Open Sequence One in the Source Clip Window right next to the Monitor Window, which will have Sequence Two open
Jump to the first marker in the Source Clip window, copy the time code of that marker and paste it into the timecode of the Monitor Window
Cut at this point, wash, rinse, repeat...
Having said this...this is a pain in the ***. I really wish Premiere was set up more like AE as this would have been more helpful I feel in Premiere as you'll be doing more editing here than in AE.
Unless...I'm missing something? Just to give this one last shot (and to make sure I'm being as clear as possible). Is there a way to be navigating EXCLUSIVE in Sequence Two, via either keyboard shortcut or some type of button in a monitor window, to jump around to cut points that you made in Sequence One, WITHOUT having to jump back to that sequence?
Here is the scenario I'm looking for: Sequence One has a cut at 00:00:02:00. I jump to that point in Sequence One. I click over to Sequence Two (which has Sequence One nested) and I click or hotkey to the same point in the timeline that 00:00:02:00 that Sequence One is currently setting at.
The reason this is vitally important is that I'm going to remove the space between 00:00:02:00 and 00:00:03:00 and replace just that part with something else. Thus, these cut points are vitally important.
    Any thoughts?

Once you know exactly what it is you are editing, report back with that information... and your project setting, and if there is a red line above the video in the timeline, which indicates a mismatch between video and project

  • Quality loss when importing/exporting in premiere pro cs4

Hi, I am fairly new to premiere pro cs4, but have some experience in final cut and after effects cs4, and I have a problem thats been bugging me for awhile.
I decided to try out premiere pro again [only used two or three times] I made a new project and sequence then imported a screen capture of a game I had on my desktop. when I dragged it into the timeline and looked over the footage it was blurry and not very clear at all, so i just did a quick edit and exported it, thinking the final product would have better quality. turns out the quality of the final product was even worse than it was when i was editing it.
I used DV-NTSC widescreen 48khz preset and didn't change any of the general settings.
the screen capture is a .mov file, 114mb, its dimensions are 762 x 502, animation codec, and 4,970 bit rate.
i used the program ishowu you record my screen, i set it to have a 25 frame rate, max quality, and animation compression.
I used the youtube widescreen HD preset H.264 format [I had planed to upload it as a quality test.]
Another question is can i set my own dimensions for the sequence instead of having to choose a preset? I hope I didn't leave anything out, and thanks in advance.
here's what it looks like before i edited it.
    and heres after:

I use a lot of 3D animations from Mac-artists, and request the same files, MOV with the Animation CODEC. I have never had any issue with those, in my SD DVD Projects. Not sure what is going on in your case. My guess would be that it's the Scaling to the DV Preset, that is causing you an issue. In my case, the animations match my source footage, 720 x 480 w/ appropriate PAR @ 29.97 FPS, so there is no scaling taking place.
As for the Frame Size, you want to explore the Desktop Preset. Unlike all the rest, it allows you to do exactly what you want - adjust the parameters to match your source footage.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Canon 7D MOV files = horrible editing in Premiere Pro CS4?

    Hi All,
I just got Premiere Pro CS4 in the mail today.  I was so excited to start cutting up my Canon 7D MOV files but it seems the MOV files play horribly in Premiere.
I looked around a little on the forum and found some others feel the same way (as well as the 5D users).
Surely I won't have to use quicktime to preview my videos.  The previewer in Premiere can barely play the files.
So, what is everybody doing these days to get a smoother work flow?
I don't want to have to do a lot of pre-editing (didn't Adobe think of this before claiming it's compatible with Canon 7D/5D files?)
Also, when starting a NEW SEQUENCE, what PRESETS should I use?  I record in 60fps.  So AVCHD 1080i30 (60i) Anamorphic?? (what a long name!)
    HELP ME!!

    Hey Jeff,
Here is that link I read it from...

Yeah, "technically supports" is giving me a headache.  I've spent my night and morning trying to find the best solution and it seems very scattered on the web.
So far the best is this blog about the "complete idiots guide to Canon 5D and PrPRO CS4..."  (note the link doesn't go straight to blog... look on the right side and click the link)

I didn't want to go the FCP route but I think I made a mistake buying CS4 last minute.  You know what sucks?  Yesterday as I'm installing Premiere Pro CS4 I'm checking my email and I see the news about the April launch of CS5 and how greatly improved PrPro CS5 is.   Oops.

  • CS4 I have created compositions in After Effects CS 4 but when I import them into Premiere Pro CS4

CS4 I have created compositions in After Effects CS 4 but when I import them into Premiere Pro CS4 they only appear in the monitor when the play button is activated. The other clips appear without a problem. I noticed that the same situation arises when I dynamically link to Encore CS4. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you Ann. But the problem is when switched on the AE clips on the timeline are only viewable when I start the project (ie press the space bar) and as it also doesn’t appear in Encore I am afraid to spend a great deal of time creating a DVD with these clips not appearing. Any advice?
    Regards and again many thanks
    Stanley
