Premiere Pro CS5.5 unresponsive on iMac

I am experiencing a number of issues with PP on my new iMac 21.5 i7 12 GB RAM 1TB SATA. This is certainly not the most powerful machine to edit AVCHD footage, but that's what I can afford. Now the problem I want to report is not that AVCHD footage is playing back erratically (it is!) but that PP seems sometimes to just go into the 5th dimension and becomes totally unresponsive: I move the cursor in the timeline, double-click on clips in the timeline or the project explorer, switch to another sequence, press on buttons, etc and absolutely nothing will happen. If I check the Activity Monitor, PP does not seem to use more that a few % of CPU, there is no apparent disk activity (maybe a spike here and there, but I could not guaranty this is coming from PP).
In those cases, if I quit PP, it is labeled as "PP is not responding" in the Activity Monitor and will stay like that for a few minutes until it eventually quits.
That is becoming a real concern...
Anybody has experienced anything like this or could suggest some fixes?

Just to make sure: I am not talking about painfully slow playback or reaction when moving from one AVCHD clip to the next. These are totally different behaviors, which I would characterize as CPU overwhelming (the floating CPU activity monitor would show all 8 virtual  cores maxed out). Those, I understand.
What I am talking about is, in the middle of editing a sequence, say, I move to a different clip on the sequence with my timeline playhead and...nothing happens. The playhead is where I want it to be, but neither the program monitor, nor the source monitor reflect any of this. I can select or double click a clip in the project manager, do whatever I want: nada, brain dead. And all the while, the CPU activity is close to zero, there is no disk activity whatsoever, there is plenty of available memory. PP is just gone.
That sounds like a bug to me. Nothing that has to do with hardware limitation or this kind of thing. But before I report it or try to raise the attention of Adobe (wish me good luck), I'd like to gather some evidence that I am not  the only poor ******* to have to deal with this.
I'll certainly try the transcoding thing.

  • Premiere Pro CS5.5 startup error. (DirectoryRegistry.cpp-283)

When i start up Premiere Pro CS5.5 on my iMac with OSX Lion it immediately shows this error:
Premiere Pro has encountered an error.
    [/Volumes/BuildDisk/builds/Mulder64/shared/
    adobe/MediaCore/ASL/Foundation/Make/Mac/../../

I don't really know what it means but i think it is because premiere can't find a file to start up because it doesn't have the right privileges. (When i login my mac as root user i can start premiere without any problems also in my administrator account with terminal starting it with sudo works without problems).
Did someone had this problem before? And how do i fix the problem?
    Thanks in advance, Levi.

I have run into the same problem. I am running a late 2008 MBP with 2 480GB OWC SSD's and 8GB of OWC RAM. I have 10.7.5 installed and am running in 64 bit mode. I get this pop-up when I try to open Premiere or Bridge:

I am the Admin on this computer. I don't know how to give myself more admin rights than I already have? Photoshop starts up without issue.
    Any suggestions?

How to download Adobe Premiere pro CS5 for windows to my new imac 27 inch

IMHO Windows would be the place to start.
Why do you want to load CS5 for Windows?
Adobe does produce a version of CS5 that runs on OS X so that it would not be necessary for you to have to screw around with Windows. Personally that would be the way to go and avoid the hassles of Windows.

  • Eye Dropper errors in Premiere Pro CS5.03 on iMac (late 2010)

    Hello everyone,
I'm having a problem here in that when I use the eye-dropper tool it does not reflect the colour of the pixels under the dropper. I'm running CS5.03.
For example, when attempting to apply the Ultra Key effect, when hovering over a green screen the colour reported bears no relation to the colour over the screen over which the dropper is placed. This is also the case when using other tools, such as the Fast Colour Corrector. This has been a problem throughout my use of the product, over 8 months. After some head scratching, it appears as though the colour reported is in fact a good few hundred or more pixels directly down the screen from where the dropper is actually positioned.
This problem only manifests itself on my iMac - I also use the same release of Premiere Pro on my MacBook (same OS version etc) but I do not experience this problem there.
My iMac is the 'late 2010' edition, 27" with its native ATI Radeon HD 5750 graphics card running MacOS 10.6.8.
    To reproduce bug:
    1. Drag and drop the Ultra Key Effect onto a clip in the timeline.
    2. Choose the Key Color tool and select the dropper.
    3. Hover the dropper tool over the colour to be keyed.
    Result:
The colour reported in the Key Color effect is not that which is underneath the dropper.
    Expected result:
The colour reported in the Key Color effect should be that colour over which the dropper is hovering.
Of course, I've submitted this as a bug report to Adobe, but they make no promises about getting back to me.
Has anybody here encountered this? Surely I'm not the only only CS5 user running on an iMac 27" here...
    Cheers,
    David Mc

I am having the same problem using Premiere Pro CS5 v5.0.4. The eye dropper will not pick up colors that are hovered over. Instead, they are offset as the original post suggests - I'm experiencing a vertical downward offset of about +/-150 pixels and a horizontal offset to the right of about +/-5 pixels.
Upgrading to CS5.5 is not an option. This appears to be a bug that others are experiencing as well and ADOBE is also aware of. The lack of being unable to utilize an essential tool is very frustrating and eliminates a critical process in a project work flow. Please advise.
    My current system configuration:
    Mac Pro
    Mac OSX 10.5.8
    2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    8GB RAM
    Ample storage - 8TB - 30% used
I'm am using two monitors with my Mac Pro:
Primary work space monitor - 27” Mac LED Cinema
Secondary over flow work space monitor - 20” Dell 2007FP - vertically oriented

  • Premiere pro cs5 crashing on start up

I have an imac i7 and i am a final cut pro user and i wanted to try adobe premiere pro cs5 before i bought well i installed it on my alumunium macbook (late 2008 model) which is and intel dual core 2 ghz processor and 4 gigs of ram and it runs perfectly fine no problems kinda like it, but when i install it on my imac i7 it runs for a little bit then crashes on start up. i even did a full system install of osx and it worked for a little and stopped and now just crashes everytime on start up, and its only premiere pro cuz i downloaded the master collection trial. and everything installed on my macbook is the exact same as installed on my imac i7. so i dont know what the heck is wrong uninstalled a million times, and i dont want to buy this software if i cant even get it to work on the main system i need it to work on. can any one help? here is a piece of the crash report.
    Application Specific Information:
*** error for object 0x10daac200: incorrect checksum for freed object - object was probably modified after being freed.

First, I am a PC-guy, and know almost zero about Macs, so take this with a handful of salt.
Similar issues in PC's can be caused by programs that incorrectly report their memory address usage to the OS, or programs that tell the OS they have released that memory address, but have, in fact, not done so.
Now, even if that is what is causing your issue, I have no clue how one could check on a Mac, but we have a lot of Mac-users around here, who can likely tell you that I am crazy and my comments do not apply to a Mac, or how to check.
    Good luck,

  • Premiere Pro CS5.5 Playback problem (when mtulti tasking) (Mac)

    Hi,
I have this very weird problem with preimiere pro CS5.5. I've only experienced this today and I've already restarted my mac a number of times and the problem still persists.
Basically, I start up premiere then work on a project, I can do playback no problem, I scrub through the timeline there is audio working, I press the spacebar, the clips play no problems
HOWEVER as soon as I switch (cmd-tab) to let's say Firefox or just even leave premiere for another window. Playback stops working, pressing spacebar won't do anything also even clicking the play button on premiere won't work. I would need to start premiere all over again. The program doesn't hang but te playback just stops working, when I scrub through the timeline, the video moves but there is no audio.
I hope someone can shed light over my problem thanks.
I have never encountered this problem for over a year ever since working on premiere pro CS5/ CS5.5
    I'm on a iMac 21.5 inch late 2010.

I just had a similar issue (Mac OS 10.7.3) Premiere Pro CS 5.5.2 was getting very unstable, seemed like it was very sluggish. When I switched to another app, then back to Premiere, pressing Play or spacebar didn't do anything. However if I waited a long time, like a minute, it came back to live. I'm not sure what is going on with my Premiere Pro these days, but it seems like it's gettings slower for me. One thing I do is to use Cocktail to clean the system caches, the reboot, and it seems this temporarily helps Premiere Pro, but after a time it gets boggy again.
Any advice on what to 'clear' to get PPro in an optimized state? I have a relatively older Mac Pro, 8 core but with 24GB of ram and nVidia 4000. It might be my imagination but it seemed 5.0 and 10.6 was faster and more stable than this, but who knows. Any advice is appreciated.

  • Microphone Issue using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5

I have also posted this at the Adobe forums. I'm just hoping someone, somewhere can help.
I am a recent convert from Final Cut to Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5, mainly so I can start burning to blu-ray. I am finding the switch a frustrating experience. The latest issue I have is with audio recording. I have an external firewire mic set up that worked flawlessly with Final Cut for two years for recording commentary tracks. Yesterday, I tried recording a commentary track in Premiere Pro, and it worked fine for about an hour, at which point it suddenly stopped. Now I can only reocrd about 6 seconds of audio before it stops recording, and repeated attempts result in a "serious error" and Premiere crashing.
I have searched everywhere and tried everything I can think of. Restarted Premiere. Uninstalled/reinstalled premiere. Shut down/unplugged/replugged in C-1 microphone. Updated software. Restarted iMac. Nothing works. I am out of things to try, and hoping someone here might have a suggestion. I have tried using the iMac's internal microphone just as a test (since the quality of the recording would be unusuable for my purposes) and Premiere won't even use that for the six seconds it will the C-1.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

So, just in case anyone else is wondering, we never did solve this issue. However, we upgraded Soundbooth to Audition, and were able to move the project there and finish the commentary track. So, that's a workaround, anyway. (A workaround that did not work in Soundbooth).

Hopefully I have everything and are ready to go... let me know?

    Several drawbacks to that iMac:
    1) Slower, less powerful CPU - fewer cores and fewer threads. Plus, no iMac can be overclocked at all; they are permanently locked at stock speed.
    2) No RAID support or capability whatsoever.
    3) Can only accommodate a single internal fast disk - period. That disk, unfortunately, is used for the OS and programs. The only viable outputs on that iMac are the Thunderbolt ports - and they, too, are limited as to the number of disks that can be connected.
    4) The 3TB disk is normally way, way, way overkill for an OS disk. However, given the complete lack of internal upgradability and the lack of internal space, Apple might as well install the largest-capacity disk it could get its hands on.

  • Buying Macbook pro with Premiere Pro CS5.5 Help needed DPU?

I am gearing for film a video production. Buying the macbook pro  and I PP CS 5.5.  Current project I want to use PP CS5.5 rather than FCP. I am new to all this.  All I want to do now is cut and sound edit with some efx matting and titles etc.  Do I need a DPU right now? Is so what is a basic one low cost? (I've seen bad reviews on the nvidia) Any help would be great I am buying all this soon.
Now shooting canon 7d will convert to pros res. In the future will shoot Red.

Although Thunderbolt is available on MBPs, MBPs with Thunderbolt enabled are still signinficantly slower than Windows desktops and laptops with the same CPU. This is, as Harm mentioned, due to their lack of ports offered. Even with Thunderbolt, MBPs are still available only with onboard Intel graphics or AMD/ATi GPUs (which cannot use Premiere Pro CS5.5's MPE GPU acceleration feature at all), and they do not support even two fast hard drives (the only supported fast hard drive on the MBP is the OS drive, and all of the offered external ports on most MBPs are significantly slower than the internal physical transfer speed of the OS drive). A few MBP's come with FW 800 ports, but even those are slower than the internal physical transfer speed of many notebook hard drives.
And did I mention that all versions of OSX (including the current release) are very poor at multithreading?
Who needs the FW 800 ports when you can daisy chain up to six devices through the Thunderbolt port?  The MBP has one TB port and the new iMac has two TB ports.  Take a look at these links:

  • Premiere Pro CS5.5 stürzt bei "importieren" ab

    Hallo zusammen

  • Can you transfer files in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 from a Mac computer to a PC that also has Adobe

I am looking into buying Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 for my iMac computer, because the guy that I am going to help out is in another state, using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 on his PC, we will both be editing video to be featured on the Pursuit channel.  My question is will we be able to open up each other's video files, seeing that I am on a iMac and he is on a PC if we are both using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5?  Right now I am using Final Cut Pro X, and he can't read my files, the codecs won't work he says.   Please help this is driving me crazy

Yes, project files are cross-platform. There are a few caveats, described here:

  • Premiere Pro CS5 takes up to 40 minutes to start up

    Hi everybody,
I am having issues with our copy of Premiere Pro CS5 - as I mentioned above, it can take up to 40 minutes, or longer, for it to create a new or load a previous project. I work at a school and we have a computer lab with 30 iMacs, running OS X 10.6.5, with the Adobe CS5 Master Collection installed on all of them. We also have a Mac server (Mac Mini) that runs Open Directory, which is used for authentication.
The issue only occurs when a networked user logs on - when I log in with a local user account, everything runs fine. I know this has to be some kind of permissions issue, I just do not know exactly what to look for, as I am a bit of a noob when it comes to Adobe, or Apple products, for that matter. I have been looking for a solution for quite a while - I reinstalled Premiere, Googled, and looked on the forums, all with no luck. I found similar posts, but they were not exactly like mine. I would really appreciate any help that I can get on this matter. Thank you.
    Regards,
    Nikita
P.S: the firewall is off on all of the computers.

    >What makes Premiere different
Todd or another employee may be able to give a technical answer
As a user who has been reading in the Premiere forums going back to 2002 and Premiere 6x I will only say that everything I have ever read, in a discussion like this, is that all versions of Premiere are designed to be run by one user on one computer... with local, not network, settings... so the program may be "tuned" to do the best possible job for that one user
This is simply a design decision that has never been changed... the product is simply not designed to do what you want
I am sure there is video editing software written to be multi-user and/or network operated... but I don't have any idea what that might be (if you want Hollywood studio team editing functionality, you'll have to pay Hollywood studio prices)

  • Premiere Pro CS5 unstable on (two) Macs - Help!

We've had Premiere Pro CS5 for a while and have tried using it a lot over the months.  The problem is it's not very stable on either of out Macs so we keep going back to FCP7 for major projects.
Given Apple's recent discontinuation of support for pro video apps issues (I can't wait for FCPX to mature) and the massive transcoding delays we're currently facing in order to use FCP7 I'd really like to get Premiere Pro CS5 (5.0.3) to a place where we can use it day-in-day-out and be able to rely on it.   I can accept that software occasionally crashes - but that's not where we're at.  It crashes 10 times a day!
    System 1:
    Mac Pro - 8 core 16GB Ram, 4xSATA HDDs (1 boot 3xRAID), ATI 5770, 30" main monitor, 23" second monitor
Software installed includes Production Premium (5.0.3), Final Cut Studio (FCP7, Motion 4 etc), Lightroom 3, Aperture 3]
    Snow Leopard 10.6.7 (fully updated)
    System 2:
iMac 27" i7 Quad, 12GB Ram, 1 SATA drive, external Firewire Drives, ATI 5770, 24" second monitor.
Software installed includes Production Premium (5.0.3), Final Cut Studio (FCP7, Motion 4 etc)
    Snow Leopard 10.6.7 (fully updated)
    Just some simple stuff....
If I ever touch the handle to move a window while playing - it crashes.
    Multicam crashes.
Moving clips on the sequence - sometimes crashes
Right clip and remove filters - crashes most of the time
Using the Colorista II plugin - if PPro tries to auto save a project while using the plugin - it crashes
These are just a few examples.   It crashes a LOT.
So, are there any known incompatibilities between software installations?  The iMac was a clean install not that long back.
Are there any known compatibility issues with these sets of hardware?  If so, what?  How do I fix them?
PPro also crashed when I had the older ATI card in the Mac Pro.
    HELP!

    > Can you point me to the change log to see what I'd lose by going back to 5.0.0 ?
Here are the details of what changed in 5.0.3 and 5.0.2.
    > Do you have a ballpark idea of release time (in weeks rather an that days or hours
I'm prohibited from saying exactly---in case something goes wrong and we need to change it---but it will be very, very soon.
    > I see CS5.5 trial can now run with all the codecs.  If I download this
will it run side by side with 5.0.3 on my system for 30 days while I
    evaluate it?
Yes, the trial version is made to run just fine on a system that has the previous version on it.

I am a newbie to Apple systems, and as a result am having no luck installing Premiere Pro CS5.5 to my new iMac desktop.
