Premiere Pro Editor's thoughts on FCPX

I've just spent a week learning FCPX to see if it's a viable alternative to fill in Premiere Pro's gaps (for example, it's terrible Multicam interface).
After a week with FCPX, I've decided to stop a client project and start over in Premiere.  From what I can tell FCPX isn't quite ready for prime time yet: i.e. no effect/transition presets, no proper interface for keyframing, buggy clip speed controls that work on some clips but not on others, Timeline workflow that's confusing as hell, etc.
However, there are several great features in FCPX that Premiere Pro users would definitely benefit from (Adobe, please take notice.  Forum users, if you like any of these ideas, please send them to Adobe as feature requests, as I will too).
FINAL CUT PRO X FEATURES THAT ARE NEEDED IN PREMIERE PRO:
First and foremost, the ability to use keywords to sort and organize subclips.  This is HUGE and probably the biggest thing missing in PP's workflow!  In FCPX, you can assign 1 or more keywords to clip selections.  Each keyword becomes the equivalent to a Bin in PP's Project window.  An interview clip, for example, can quickly be marked with in/out points during live playback, and each clip selection can be sent to its own respective keyword 'bin(s)' for easy finding later on.  Thus a long interview clip can be broken up into any number of subclips organized by terms such as 'soundbite', 'nod', 'smile', 'reaction shots', 'favorites', etc.  And since up to 9 keywords can be assigned their own keyboard shortcuts (e.g. 1-9 on the number pad), assigning keywords and thus organizing subclips into logical 'bins' can even be done on the fly during playback!  Lastly, the 'subclips' in FCPX are intelligent in the sense that you can still drag the in/out points out up to the original duration of the clip, unlike PP's unusable subclips that create hard in/out points that can't be reset.  Adobe, PLEASE add intelligent ways to organize subclips into bins!  This is still the biggest thing missing in Premiere IMO.
Easy way to export/import keyboard layout presets.
Graphical keyboard layout preset interface. i.e. ability to set shortcuts by dragging commands to the keys of a graphical keyboard interface, or to click on any keyboard key in the interface to see and change all associated shortcuts (with and without modifiers).
Better multicam interface with automatic synchronization of clips based on audio analysis (i.e. built-in PluralEyes software). (I won't elaborate on this point since I've discussed it extensively in other threads)
Timeline Audio keyframes that only move left/right or up/down, depending on initial movement after selection.  This would make it so much easier to reposition keyframes in the Timeline without inadvertently changing their dB values.  And no, PP's current keyboard modifier to restrict audio keyframe movement to left/right or up/down does not work properly.  It never did!
Intelligent audio waveforms in the Timeline. i.e. Waveforms that grow or shrink to graphically represent their volume settings.
Ability to change a clip's audio from Stereo to dual mono and back to Stereo after it had already been used in the Timeline.
Here's my short list.  If you've used FCPX before, please add your suggestions to the list!  Overall, I would much prefer that Adobe integrate some of FCPX's great ideas than the other way around, because after using FCPX for a week, it's become clear that Premiere Pro is so much closer than FCP to giving editors what they want and need.  Just adding item 1 from my list would go a long way towards PP achieving the goal of perfect NLE!
Thanks for reading.

Thanks for your post. I hope you have already filed feature requests for these.
I like this one. Let's all file feature requests for keywords to sort and organize clips: http://www.adobe.com/go/wish
You can use the .kys file to share or move keyboard shortcuts. Are you familiar with those? I modified the Help file to include this info: http://adobe.ly/WAfgCZ
A graphical UI for keyboard shortcuts is a feature request I'd like to see implemented, as well: http://www.adobe.com/go/wish
Automated synchronization of multicamera clips based on audio waveforms (merge clips too) would be wonderful. That's a feature request.
Constrain audio keyframes vertically or horizontally with a keyboard modifier? I don't know of that one that is supposed to work. I have a feeling that this is a feature request.
Better audio waveforms? Feature request.
Changing audio tracks on the fly? Feature request.
Pierre-Louis, I actually am an editor and with 23 years of pro experience. Here's a basic summary:
I've been chopping bits of tape together since 1983.
I have a BA in Radio, TV, and Film.
I started as an online linear editor (GVG, CMX, etc.) in the late 80's.
I've edited, color corrected, and provided motion graphics for numerous productions, including features, commercials, music videos, web video, and corporate video in LA and San Francisco.
I was formally trained at Video Symphony on Photoshop, Media 100, After Effects, and Avid Media Composer by Hollywood experts in 1997 (6 month long boot camp certification).
Original 2-popper known as "Telly." My hero was Ralph Fairweather (R.I.P.), the sole voice inside Apple that helped us all with FCP 1.
Founded the first FCPUG, SF Cutters, from which all FCPUGs sprung. I helped found the LAFCPUG, as well.
I started training people Final Cut Pro professionally in 2000 (BAVC, Video Symphony).
I was an Apple Certified Trainer for almost a decade. I was one of the first in the program chosen by Apple, and always in the "first class" of trainers for every rev.
Wrote the well-received book, "Motion Graphics and Effects in Final Cut Pro." See what my friend, Ken Stone has to say about the book.
As a result of my book and reputation as a trainer, I worked inside Apple on the documentation for Final Cut Studio 1 (LiveType, FCP, FC Express).
I worked on the XSAN team testing XSAN after I finished with FCS 1.
I worked on 2 features at Pixar (Nemo, WALLE) doing pre-viz using After Effects.
I worked on Final Cut Studio 3 inside Apple as an "internal editor" (beta tester), mainly working on Apple Motion.
I have worked at Adobe as a tech writer, community manager, and now as the support lead.
There's more, but I'll stop there.
Since I am an editor, trainer, tech writer and support person, I do understand your requests, however, I do have limited capability to help users change features. I am only one man with one voice. The best ammo for getting new features implemented is the feature request form.

  • Co-Editing. Received an .xml from Premiere Pro editor - no media attached

Is this normal? I thought all the media would come with it. If this is not the case, how do I get a sequence with media attached to import into FCP? Thank you!

    Hi ush_publicity,
Premiere Pro project file stores only media location or the reference for it not the complete media. So, if you want to move the project from one machine to another use Project Manager from File >Project Manager.
To check how it works refer the link below.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/trim-or-copy-project.html
Once you get the project then open the project and export the XML file.

  • Is there a way to import a Premiere Pro CS5.5 project into FCPX without going through FCP7?

...because that part of it is giving me trouble.  It's a huge project, and while PPCS5.5 exports the FCP XML just fine, when FCP7 starts to import it I get a bunch of "looking for movie in file...x" messages and then it crashes.  When I select the option to try to find the file it says it wants, that file is always grayed out.
A lot of people may be making this same switch if FCPX is full-featured again.  Does anyone know a way to make it without involving FCP7?
    Thanks...

    Hi...
    Download Resolve Light from BlackMagicDesign.
It will import the PPRO Project and can export it to FCPx XML.
I use it and it works a charm and only takes minutes.

  • Import Premiere Pro CS5.5 Project into FCPX?

It's hard to hunt down ideas online, but if the new FCP update is good there may soon be a lot of people trying.
The only way I could figure out to do it was to export FCP XML from PPCS5.5, import that into FCP7, then use 7toX to get it from FCP7 to FCPX.  I just can't get it to work the way it's supposed to.
My PPCS5.5 project is a monster, which probably doesn't help.  PP lets me export it just fine, but when I try to import what it exports into FCP7, I get a bunch of "'looking for movie in file' X" messages, then FCP7 crashes.  If I click to search for a file it says it wants, that file is always for some reason grayed out and unselectable, arg.
Anyone have any ideas that maybe eliminate the FCP7 middleman?
    Thanks...

you will need a middle man. At least until PPRO is capable of exporting to FCPx XML.
My middleman is called Resolve Light from BlackMagicDesign. It is FREE to download and iin my experience it converts beautifully from PPRO XML to FCPX XML.
There you will import the PPRO XML and export it as FCPX XML.

  • Premiere Pro CS4 Installation Failed - Again!

    Hi all
We are currently using an old version of Adobe Premiere which I would like to upgrade to the latest version.  I want to show everyone in the company how good the latest version is and get them to pay for an upgrade/full version.
I then noticed a free trial download for Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and thought great idea. Well done Adobe I can now show everyone how good the latest CS4 version is.
5 days later I still can not get the damn thing to install and work!! :-(
In a desperate move I even tried it on a new Windows XP Pro SP3 - 3Gb RAM - Quad Core - 1Tb HD etc.. and when I try and install the Premiere windows 1.3Gb trial installation it eventually says at the end of the installation process (which takes for ever) "Installation Failed - One or more required components of Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 failed to install correctly." and it shows the following error log:
    Adobe Dynamiclink Support
    Error:
    Error 2.
    Adobe Media Encoder CS4
    Error:

Adobe Media Encoder CS4 Additional Exporter

Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 LangPack (en_US)
    Error:
Over the last 5 days I have looked through this forum site and tried every recommendation it suggests to fix the problem including:
    1) Uninstalling / Re-installing serveral times the Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 which eventually comes up with the above error.
    2) Turned off all Anti-Virus applications and disabled all running windows applications.
    3) I have also tried the WinCS4Cleanupscript process
    4) Manually deleted and removed the premiere folders
    5) I even rang up adobes technical support line and they said use the forums to solve the problem. Cushy job they have...
None of the above fix the problem...
So here I am. Has anyone got any ideas how to make it run up in trial mode ?
Your help and advice would be greatly appreciated as I suspect im not the only one having this problem.

Day 8 - OK I have finally fixed the problem.  I got fed up and purchased the full Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 product and it installed and worked 1st time!!!
I must admit im very annoyed that the Trial version failed but the full product works.  The 2 x Premiere Pro CS4 installation CDs went through the installation process without a hitch and I did not get any installation error messages at all.
So my no 1 question is why does the online Adobe Premiere CS4 Trial version fail to install but the full product can ?
For what its worth, here are my final observations from this whole saga:
    1) The first thing I noticed on the Full Product CD Installation is it defaulted to and installed the "en_International" version and not the "en_US" language version. For some reason the online trial version defaulted to "en_US" language and I used this option during the trial installations. Maybe this language option upsets the installation process on my UK PC.
Now I have it working im not going to risk re-installing it all again. But if your a UK user and you encounter problems during the trial installation process then try selecting the "en_International" language option. You never know.
    2) Another obvious observation is the trial version has numerous features removed and hacked out of it  So did the Adobe engineer get carried away with the hacking process and also remove some important installation code and procedures.
After several days of trying to get the trial version to work there is obviously a problem with the trial installation process and it needs looking at.  I must of installed and reinstalled it 15+ times and during this time it upset my Dreamweaver CS4 app so forcing me to re-install this application as well.
Please Adobe just give the online users the option of 2 x CD ISO Images to download and burn onto a CD as this could save other users the same frustrating time I have had and maybe give you more revenue.

  • Can I hand off a Premiere Pro CC file created in Windows to another editor who works in Premier Pro CC Mac OS?

Can I hand off a Premiere Pro CC file created in Windows to another editor who works in Premier Pro CC Mac OS?

    Thanks Miles4Ever!
When you say converted, do you mean you got a dialogue box after double clicking saying the file needed to be converted?  Or some other kind of procedure.  thanks again.

  • I am not a Mac user, but Premiere Pro and other Adobe programs are installed on the Macs used by our freelance artists and editors.

We have video clips of interviews stored on a Mac-formatted external hard drive. Our new editor explained that in order to have authentic time codes, we must transcribe them using Premiere Pro. What is the most efficient way to do so?
In other words, should I open a Word doc, start listening to the interviews and type them? Is there a dictation option within Premiere or a note pad I can type into and save them? I am really baffled.

I think I've figured out that there is no dictation program.
When I open the video clips in Premiere Pro, they will not play. If I can figure out that problem, I wont worry about anything else. Isn't PP, a media player in and of itself? I must not be opening it correctly.

  • How do you create a thought bubble with a video playing inside on premiere pro CC??

  • From FCPX to Premiere Pro (Rendering?)

Looking for a quick simple answer to a quick and possibly foolish question. Is Rendering necessary before exporting in Premiere Pro? I ask because I feel like I can export a 30minute FCPX project with effects, text, transitions with render time and exporting in 10 minutes (exaggerating of course). But the same project, same situation, I have to wait an hour or two because of rendering then exporting.
Could be my MacBook Pro in general but just curious. I'd rather be in Premiere but I feel real comfortable in FCPX.
    I have a MBP 15" Early 2011. Only upgrade is 16GB RAM.
    Any help is appreciated.

I did like working in Premiere Pro for one of my school projects but the rendering time and exporting time for it made me stick with FCPX. It was a 45 second fictional commercial and it took over night to finish.
I'm sure I did something wrong or just not used to working in it. I did do some research about Rendering and from what I've read, people say it's unnecescary to render but could be just preference.

  • I am just moving from FCPx to Premiere Pro

I am just moving from FCPx to Premiere Pro, and one of the things I'll miss with FCPx is all the free wipe's, templates, generators that were availible throught places like FCP.co Forum, is there any kind of free stuff available like this but for Premiere?

  • Just switched to FCPX from Premiere Pro

In Premiere you can edit multiple stories on the same timeline and then just render out the video under the work area bar, is there a similar function in FCPX?

Here is a pic of my set up in premiere pro.  Each project is good for the whole week, each tab (sequence) is a different day of that week (108=monday, 208=tuesday, etc.)  Each day we edit multiple news stories and render them out to pay on air.  In PP, the area under the work area bar (story5 far right) is the curent story being worked on and the only one that will be rendered out.
I guess my real question is...What would be the best way to duplicate this type of setup?  Have each event be the equivalent of the PP Project and each project under that event be the equivilant of the sequence?
    Thanks in advance.

  • What is FCPX 10.1 equivalent of Premiere Pro Warp Stabilizer ?

    Hi there,
I saw some youtube tutorial where Adobe's Premiere Pro inbuilt effects called Warp Stabilzer is quite good in stabilizing some handheld videos.
I have some video clips taken handheld since I did not bring along the tripod. It looks shaky, how do I correct/minimise the shakiness in PCPX 10.1 ?
Does FCPX 10.1 has equivalent of Premiere Pro's Warp Stabiliser ?
    Thanks

FCP X has its own stabiliser. See this tutorial:-

  • Failure to import fcp7 project's xml into Premiere Pro 2014.  Details below.  Why is it crashing? Any thoughts?

Here are the details of my problem:
Premiere Pro 2014 (up to date)
Mac book Pro OSX Yosemite 10.10.1 with 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 processor
Source footage includes a variation of codecs as follows: H.264 in a .mov container, 1920 x 1080 Apple Pro Res 422, Linear PCM
There are no error messages, the import into Premiere Pro 2014 begins normally but the "progress bar" never starts and then after about 10 seconds a blank white box appears followed by the pinwheel.
When the problem occurred I was trying to import a fcp7 project's xml file into Premiere Pro.
I emailed Adobe Support Tech the fcp7 xml file and it crashed his computer, however, I was able to successfully import one clip from fcp7  (an Apple ProRes 422, Linear PCM, duration 1 minute) from the fcp 7 project into Premiere Pro, but not the whole project or the bare essentials (the cut itself).
I am not running other software
Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed?  Not that I know of...
Tell us about your computer hardware. Be especially certain to tell us about third-party I/O hardware (e.g., AJA, Matrox, Blackmagic, MOTU). ??????
I am using Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration
The problem only happen when I try to import the FCP7 xml project file into Premiere Pro

    Hi Lynn,
Have you inspected the XML file for any anomalies? That might be a way to see if any third party effects were used.
    Thanks,
    Kevin
