Premiere Pro file size

I've loaded a video from camera into Premiere Pro CC which is over 8GB, but it has a lot of blank footage at the beginning and especially at the end.  i need to get it down to 4.7 GB to burn it onto a DVD.  I've trimmed the blank footage at the beginning and the end, but the file size has not changed.  Any thoughts?

Hi,
Export it as MPEG2-DVD and the file size will be reduced.
Thank you.

  • Encoding for Encore from Premiere Pro - File Size

I'm working on a Blu-ray project that contains four separate tutorials, each with several individual clips.  I exported each clip (chapter) out of After Effects CS6 using the standard H264 preset.  The tutorials range from 2 to 5 hours each.  After all was said and done, the total file size of all H264 video clips was just under 25GB, perfect for a Blu-ray burn.
I created four sequences in Premiere Pro, one for each tutorial.  All of the H264 video files were brought into Premiere Pro, chapter markers were added, ready to rock.
When I attempted to export each sequence using the H264 Blu-ray preset, I found that using that preset would result in a grand total of about 75GB worth of data.  So I selected the MPEG2 Blu-ray preset, and it was almost the same.  I manually adjusted target bitrate settings, dropped quality to as low as it would go, and still the estimated file size far exceeded the 25GB I had available.
All tutorials total about 15 hours of 1280x720 30p content.  I realize that's a ton of data, but AE exported all of this content using H264 and the grand total file size was under 25GB.  But bringing those very same video clips into Premiere Pro, assembling them, and exporting them results in much, much larger files.  I even attempted to import the AE exports directly into Encore to avoid having to re-encode anything, and still it estimated that the project's file size exceeded 75GB, even though the source footage of H264 video was less than 25GB.
Right now I'm down-rezzing all of the footage to 720x480 and the file sizes are smaller, although I'll still need to decrease the bit rates significant if I have any shot of dumping all of this onto a single 25GB Blu-ray.
I do realize that 15 hours is a lot for a single disc, but what I don't understand is how I can have 15 hours of H264 exported out of AE result in less than 25GB, but using that exact same footage in PPro/Encore results in over 75GB of footage.
    Any insight would be appreciated.

The thing is, the AE exports look just fine.  (The tutorials are just a bunch of screen capture/software stuff.)  I didn't mess with any of the default preset settings for H264 out of AE, but yeah, they must've been encoded at pretty low bitrates.
I wasn't aware that BD specifications have minimum bitrate requirements, so that would explain why I'm unable to decrease the bitrates within PPro or Encore.  Thanks for the info on that.  I just figured as long as the footage was at least 720P with square pixel ratio encoded in H264 or MPEG2 I'd be fine, but apparently not!
The tutorials are for my own personal use, so I'm not too concerned about decreased resolution if I am able to make the SD content fit.  Otherwise, yeah, burning multiple discs is my only option.
    Thanks for the prompt feedback.

  • Premiere Pro file size and timeline duration limits?

Hello. Are there any file size limits for importing JPEG or MPEG files and exporting WMV? I am looking at some extremely long footage. Thanks!
Message was edited by: Kevin Monahan

I understand clients ask for things, and normally I would suggest that you merely export a second time to show them the H.264 results. Higher quality and smaller file.
I don't know how long it would take to export a 24 hour sequence though. That might make it a waste of time. Unless it can be done overnight, I suppose.
You file size should be interesting. It will depend on how low you can take the bitrate and be happy. Or, it might be a case of using a higher bit rate and just dealing with a large hard drive.
Please post again with your results. This is a new one for me, and I would love to hear about it.

  • CS6 Premiere Pro file not opening, saying file is not supported

I have been working on a video piece and when I tried to open it recently to continue editing it, it said there was an error importing and that my file was not supported. When the file opened all the film didn't show up and was replaced by 'media pending' or something along those lines.
I don't know how to fix this as there is no reason the files should be incompatible as I haven't changed them from their original Premiere Pro files.
    Does anyone have a solution?

  • How do I import a Premiere Pro file into After Effects

So I'm an editor, I cut trailers and TV spots. I enjoy making my title cards on After Effects because it gives me a lot of options but I'm having difficulty. How do I import / edit a Premiere Pro file into After Effects? I imported the project file but the whole thing was a mess and nothing made sense. Can anyone explain this process to me?
By the way I used CS5.5 versions of the software.

It actually works better if you go the other way... link an AE comp into your Premiere project.

  • Premier Pro File Size

I am new to Premier Pro and after creating my first video with this software I realize the file size is HUGE!
    100mb+
What are you guys using to compress your files for internet distribution?
    Thanks!

Hey! I install routers on T1lines all the time. It is what I do for a living on my day job. Unless they are using MPLS to route through a centralized firewall, then 1.5Mb/s should be fast enough for most locations with less than a dozen people or so, even if they are routing VoIP. At least that should be the case if the traffic shaping is set correctly. Unless they all want to watch the videos at the same time.
As for sacrificing, you missed the third leg of the stool. Frame size. With a smaller frame size it is possible to reduce the bit rate without sacrificing quality.  It depends on the content of course. Training calls for bigger frames. A word from the CEO just needs to be big enough to see his/her facial expressions.
That said, the Vimeo presets produce a pretty decent video. However, I see a problem with your settings.
First of all, 720X480 is a frame size designed for non square pixels. If you change over to 640X480 you will have a true 4:3 frame. I thought you would have wanted a 16:9 frame. If you truly want a 1280X720 (720p) setting, then you need to go with a different preset. Also, I recommend that you deinterlace the export, meaning go progressive instead of using the DV NTSC setting. So select one of the 720p presets.
Try the Vimeo 720p preset. That gave me 38,954KB at a data rate of 5Kb for a one minute video (00;01;00;02) with a frame size of 1280X720 progressive instead of deinterlaced.
The Vimeo SD widescreen preset gave me a 16,976KB file at a 2K data rate with a frame size of 640X360.
Neither are terribly small by standards I used a decade ago, but I assume better PCs and a faster connection than I did back then. If you really think that 10Mb is too big for a one minute video, I highly recommend that you reconsider. To get 60 seconds of video that was already compressed pretty tight and was still a file of just about 200MB (using HDV at 25Mb/s as a source) down to one twentieth of that, you really have some hurdles.
To get it down even farther recalls the day I wanted to put a video of Arlo Guthrie on my web site so I cut the frame rate to 15 frames per second and exported a frame size of only 160X120 and achieved a 1.6MB file with a duration of 4:28 at a data rate of 17Kbp/s. http://www.stevengotz.com/videos/arlo_8.wmv
Download it to play in Windows Media Player if you want to see what I mean - don't play it in a browser. It just doesn't look right. One of these days I need to find that tape and post it at full 480p. I really love that guy.

  • Opening a Premiere Pro file on a different computer

My Premiere Pro CC 2014 8.1.0 project file was created and worked upon on my personal macbook laptop. I have been working entirely off of an external hard drive that was plugged into my macbook. I plugged my hard drive into a different mac computer that has the same up to date Premiere Pro CC 2014 8.1.0 version of the software, but I repeatedly receive the message that my file was created in a "newer version" of Premiere and cannot be opened. If anyone has any idea how I can open the file, please help me. Thank you.

  • Can I work on a Premiere Pro file, which has dynamic links, while it is exporting?

Will further edits interfere with or change the export? What if I make changes to a dynamically linked file in After Effects? I just want to make sure it is okay to make changes during an export.

What version of Premiere are you using?
    For CS6:
When you send a Premiere Sequence to Media Encoder via the "Queue"
option, Premiere saves a copy of the Premiere Project here (Win):
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp
Media Encoder uses this copy as the reference while encoding,
so you are able to continue to work in Premiere without problems.
However, Media Encoder (and its 'Temp' Premiere Project) will
continue to look to the original Dynamically Linked Ae files for encoding.
If you want to continue working on an Ae comp while an encode
in in progress in Media Encoder, you should save an incremental copy
of your Ae file (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S) before you make any changes.
If you do this, it will not interfere with the ongoing encoding.

  • Premiere Pro 4 File Won't Open

    Hi all
I have an adobe premiere pro file that won't open. When I double click on it, the load project bar gets to about four fiths of the way, then it just stops. The last time I saved the file, I saved it to my computer, then I saved it to a portable hard drive to back it up (around four minutes later). Both versions of the file won't open. The previous file will open, but I have done 30 hours more work since then (on the new file). I thought it was enough to be saving every few minutes, saving back ups to a portable hard drive... I also have a raid 1 configuration! I was never expecting this. When I leave the Premiere Pro on the Load Project screen, it stays there for hours.
If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.

    Hi John
Thanks for getting back to me. I just looked in autosave. The file that won't open was last saved at 11:02pm on the 16th. There was an autosave project at 10.25pm on the 16th, and that wouldn't open either (it crashes at exactly the same place as the other one). However, there was an autosave file at 6:17pm on the 16th that would open. Curious though, it doesn't seem to have a lot of the changes I thought I had made by this time. It seems to be earlier than this (although perhaps my memory isn't serving me correctly). Should there be more autosaves that this? I had the program open pretty much that whole time, and nothing between 6:17 and 10:25.
Anyway, that's a start! Something must have happened between 6.17pm and 10.25pm that'd made the file go kaput. I would love to know what, so I can avoid this happening again. First things first though, it'd be fantastic to get the file that isn't opening working.
Thanks for your swift response too, Jim. I opened PP and tried to open the file from the interface. The load project bar stopped at the same place. I can open other projects fine. As to your last suggestion, I created a new project, and went to File/Import then clicked on the file in question. It started importing, then the progress bar froze at exactly the same place. I'm not sure if I did this correctly. Is there another way to import a PP file into an existing PP?
Thanks again for your time. It's just nice to speak to someone about this because I really freaked out when it happened.

  • Importing an Adobe Premiere Pro CC file into Final Cut 7

I am a student working on a video project and I want to import a Premiere Pro file into Final Cut 7. Does anyone know how to do that? I use Premiere Pro at home, but my school uses Final Cut 7. I just want to finish my project at home and then get it into Final Cut 7 at school. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

You might be able to do this by exporting XML from PPro and then importing that into FCut
Otherwise, you should ask Final Cut questions in an Apple forum

  • Premiere Pro CS6 extreme project bloating and Media Encoder

    Hi there,
I'm interested in hearing if others are having this issue and if there's a fix.  I first noticed this bug in CS5 and it hasn't changed in CS6.0.1.  An editor I'm working with recently discovered the problem at the expense of a project being usable the day before clients are coming in to work on cuts.
Here's what's happening: we have a 20MB commercial project, no warp stabilizer in play, no frequent "save as..." commands being used, both of which seem to contribute to project bloating based on some online research.  I've been using Premiere as a finishing timeline since CS5 and noticed back then, when we were making some settings in Media Encoder, that when you click and drag sequences into ME instead of using the "Add Premiere Pro Sequence" menu option, the Premiere project file size quickly increases and saves and autosaves start taking several minutes to complete.
We've been using the "Add Premiere Pro Sequence" method to send things to ME on this project but the editor was getting impatient the amount of time it was taking for ME to load the project and get to the point where he could pick which sequences he wanted to encode.  He did a bit of research and found the click and drag method to be faster.  After a handful of times using this method, the project size went from 20MB to 3.71GB.  Our autosave folder is set keep 5 versions of the project and you can see the project size doubling from 477MB to 840MB to 1.6GB.
I was able to import the 477MB project into a new project and save it out at its original size of 20MB.  However, this meant that we lost about 90 minutes worth of work.  I tried to import the 3.71GB file overnight and it had made no progress when I came in this AM.
Reading online, I found that the "Save As..." command had previously caused some kind of duplication of preview file links in the project code.  I opened up our 20MB project in TextWrangler and compared it to the 840MB project's lines of code.  The 20MB project had 400k lines and the 840MB project had about a million.  The difference appeared to stem from links to Preview files.  I wanted to try to clear those out to see if I could get the project size down but, probably because of the file size, TextWrangler crashed.
Is there any way to clean out the bloat from these projects without importing into a new project?  Also, are there settings in Media Encoder or Premiere that will prevent the bloat from happening when using the click-drag method of getting sequences into ME?  We're using the "Use Preview Files" option, which greatly speeds up the compression in ME, but might be contributing to the issue.
    Here are the machine specs:
    Mac Pro 2.66 GHz 12-core
    16GB RAM
    NVidia Quadro 4000
    ATTO Fibrechannel card
    Blackmagic Design Decklink Extreme 2
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
    Best,
    Jon

    Thank you for your response.
-I tried exporting an AVI and the file exported succesfully but with a warning "Adobe Media Encoder Could not write XMP data in output file." The file plays fine though and is over 5.5GB. So that's odd that my h.264 which is under 1GB won't fully export.
-Yes, the same thing happens when exporting directly from PrPro instead of using AME.
-In this project I am using NO Dynamic Links.
-I have not installed any codec libraries.
    -I do not use 3rd party plug-ins.
-My destination drive has several terabytes.
    Thanks,
    Nate
