Premiere Pro independent reference book

Hi,
There are number of very good authors out there when it comes to Photoshop; Jeff Schewe, Martin Evening, Matt Kloskowski to name but a few. However I can’t find any good instructional/reference books when it comes to Premiere Pro.
The kind of book I’m looking for would describe Intermediate to Advanced techniques covering video ingestion to export but using Premiere Pro [CS6 or CC] as the Software medium, possibly including After Effects but not as the main subject.
The PDF manual for PremPro CC [and associated links] is great but no substitute for a well thought out reference book by an independent author.
The Adobe Classroom series are also quite good if you want to follow a step be step guide. Not much use if you want a detailed description of some s/w aspect, or think out of the box.
Can anyone offer any suggestions please?
Thanks,
Lyndon

Even if that were the starting point of every new PP user, it's still only part of step 2 on shooter's list.  Step 1 really should be done first when using software at this level.
We will have to just let that be a disagreement that can't be settled between us.
I didn't know anything about editing but I pretty much knew what my very first video should look like when I was done with it. It was instinctive, and based on other travel videos I had seen. I just knew that the other software didn't let me edit the way I wanted to edit, and Premiere did. Not that I knew the "right" way, just that I knew what I wanted to do.
Looking back on it now, I am not particularly displeased with the results. If I were to do it today I would have less dissolves and more straight cuts, but all in all it wasn't bad. And, more important, the family liked it. One of my older brothers tried to insult me a bit, as older brothers are sometimes prone to do, and said it was like watching PBS. What he didn't realize is that I would be thrilled by the comparison.
I have to assume that there are lots of other people in the same place that I was when I started. But nowadays it is easier to learn. Does it matter that I didn't know anything at all about editing? Not really. It came out OK.
As I write this I am trying to figure out exactly what might be meant by "Learn how to EDIT". Is that understanding how Walter Murch would do it? Or is there some other way to learn to edit? Tutorials? Books? If so, which ones?
What exactly do you guys mean by that and do you both mean the same thing? Is studying films or documentaries that you enjoy sufficient? I know it is certainly advisable. Do you really think that going to college is required to produce vacation videos good enough to post to YouTube for the enjoyment of your family?
But even that is often skipped by most of the people we're talking about.
I think that is actually the heart of the issue. Which is why I link to it so often, and I wish I could get everyone to agree to start almost all answers that are too general with a link to the tutorial.
John Smith does a pretty good job of posting some links. I wonder what would happen if it started with a link to the Eagle tutorial?

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 classroom in a book lesson files "file format not supported" error message

Hey y'all. I have the creative Suite cloud membership and am learning Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 and have the latest update. I have an iMac, version 10.8.2 and have been going through the lessons 1-8 so far from the 'Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 Classroom in a book' with no problems. So far so good. Then, when I opened Lesson 9 project today, I realized that certain media was off line (see pic below-videos and maps) even though I had been able to open the project. I tried to see if it was a link issue but was unable to select the 'Link Media' option and the system did not give me the option to link media when opening a new project. The strange thing is that I am now able to open some lessons with everything working fine but when I try to open other lessons such as lesson 9 or 10 or 11 I notice media files offline after getting the "file format not supported" pop-up error message when attempting to open a project. It's random as some lessons I had opened previously now give this error message of file format not supported when they didn't in the past whilst others work. I have deleted all the lesson files from my hard drive and reinstalled them from the cd onto my hardrive but the issue persists. Any idea as to why all of a sudden Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 is giving the error message "File format not supported"??? when opening the lessons. I have not changed any preferences. I've included some screenshots though I don't know how much help they will be... Is anyone else running into this issue??? Can anyone help???
NEVERMIND. I FOUND OUT ON MY OWN WHAT THE ISSUE WAS AND IS NOW FIXED. YAY!

Why were you trying to link a file in the project to the project file itself? Shouldn't it be a video file or something? Like .mov .wav .avi .mp4 and not .prproj

  • Free Excerpts from Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 Classroom in a Book

    Hi Guys,
I just posted a new blog with links to excerpts from the Adobe Premiere Pro Classroom in a Book. Along with the excerpts are links to the pertinent topics in Help. These links should clear up any confusion you may come across as you work through the excerpts.
If you are new to Adobe Premiere Pro or are switching from another NLE, I can highly recommend this book. The links to the excerpts are here on my blog.
By the way, at the bottom of the blog post are links to free excerpts for Adobe After Effects, including video tutorials.

Adobe is getting better all the time, should  have been easy to read 5 years ago, it does give you more confidence.
    Thanks

  • Books on Premiere Pro CS5

Looking for recommnedation on good book(s) for Premiere Pro CS5.  Is there a manual buried in the software somewhere that I can print out?
Looked around on Amazon but not sure which are good and which are rubbish.
I'm a newbie so need all the help I can get.
    Thanks
    Joe

    Joe,
You should have a PDF of the Help files, and if not, the Help files are available on-line, and there should be a way to print those out.
As for books, my first purchase would be Adobe Classroom in a Book Premiere Pro CS5, Adobe Press. It starts one off with a good tour of the GUI, and then steps the reader through doing almost anything that one would need in real-world usage. The author covers by the "how," and the "why." For some additional info, say on each Effect, the Help files come into play.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Are the two USB3 ports on a Mac Book Pro independent channels of USB?

Are the two USB3 ports on a 15" 2012 Mac Book Pro independent channels of USB? If I plug a USB2 device into one of the ports, does it slow the other as well?
    Thanks
    MtD

Thanks - according to this Apple KB article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5172
plugging in a USB 2 device into the USB3 daisy chain slows all devices on that chain to USB2 speed.
What I am trying to find out is if the two ports on the side of the MacBook Pro are independent channels of USB, so that you could operate with a USB2 device on one port and still obtain USB 3 speeds (with USB3 only devices plugged in) on the second port.

  • Mac book pro (late 2013) has a lag when sculpting and rotating models in Zbrush only when using my Wacom-capture tablet (if I use a mouse or trackpad its fine no lag). Also Premiere Pro CS5, playback is almost like watching footage in slow motion.

Mac book pro (late 2013) has a lag when sculpting and rotating models in Zbrush, but only when using my Wacom-capture tablet (if I use a mouse or trackpad its fine no lag).
Also Premiere Pro CS5 playback is almost like watching footage in slow motion, Premiere Pro is installed on the main drive but the footage is on an external drive connected with USB 2.
I'm wondering if it is just a problem with the Mac USB drivers maybe not supporting USB 2 ? (Because I have also installed Window 7 on this same MacBookPro and tested the same software "Zbrush and Premiere Pro" And they both work perfectly on the Bootcamp Windows 7 install, and so its using the same hardware so it has to be the drivers right ?)
Any help would be great, Thanks

    Hi

When i select the 2nd option "Mercury playback engine Software only" the picture reapears.
I think it is something with the Graphics card and the CUDA but i see others Z book users to work just fine with CUDA.

  • Premiere Pro Reference Tone

So if Premiere Pro reference tone comes in at -12dB and is out put that way to a TV station, how are they going to deal with that given that most stations set their reference tone to -20dB? Or do we have to change that somewhere in premiere so it reflects -20dB before it goes out? Just trying to understand this coming from Avid.

Answered in your other thread about same topic.
Change it to what you need.

  • Websites, books, and other resources for learning to use Premiere Pro

What websites, books, tutorials, and other resources have you found useful for learning to use Premiere Pro?
I want to make sure that we have a comprehensive list of good resources for Premiere Pro. See this page for a list of high-quality After Effects resources that I put together; I want something like this for Premiere Pro.
I'll start. In no particular order, here are some resources that I've found valuable:
    this forum (of course)
Premiere Pro Help documents and Help & Support pages in several languages
Community Help search for Premiere Pro
Getting started with Premiere Pro by video2brain
Premiere Pro CS5: Learn By Video by video2brain
video tutorials on Adobe TV and Video Workshop
Premiere Pro CS5 Classroom in a Book

    I didn't mention Lynda.com.
And, no, Total Training and Lynda.com certainly haven't merged.
Total Training has some good Premiere Pro stuff, but it's not the first place that I'd point someone for Premiere Pro.

  • Lesson files in the CD from Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014 release (Classroom in a book) won't load.

After copying all files from the CD on to my hard drive, the files won't work when I tried to open it in Premiere Pro. It says file missing or cannot be found.
Could anyone please help me with this?

I contacted Adobe customer service and they directed me here.
They told me that they would transfer the chat to the appropriate group but ended up giving me this community forums link.

  • Is there no User Guide for Premiere Pro CS6?

I am a FCP7 refugee trying to decide between Avid and PP CS6. After waiting for a few weeks for it to be available, I have been lookiig through the PP CS6 Help PDF. I was surprised to see that it is not a complete reference guide documenting the features of the application, but instead a mish-mash of short descriptions, with numerous links to videos, documents from earlier versions, and other external locations where one has to go to get the actual information--not very helpful as a guide to the application. Is there actually no comprehensive user guide from Adobe in a single document or PDF? Or is the only way to get information about the application to navigate through all these disjointed materials?
If there is such a user guide, I would very much like to know where I can find it. If there isn't, I would have to count this as a very big factor in favor of deciding to go with Avid. This is particularly true given the absence of any current third-party books on PPro CS6, although such books are hardly a substitute for a well written and comprehensive user guide, something which is also true of the help PDF.

    Groppler wrote:
Since the links are to the on-line CS6 help and the PDF version of that help, both of which are a collection of materials concerning CS5, CS5.5 and CS6...
Yes, for CS6, new information was added to the CS5/CS5.5 documentation. We had to go this route because we are working with brand new documentation software. There simply was not enough time to integrate the software and complete a whole new set of documentation. Believe me, it was enough of a challenge integrating the old system with the new one--in addition to creating the articles for new features, and the connective tissue between them.
There is only one person that does the docs for Premiere Pro, and that is me. I have limitations and guidelines I must follow, so I hope you understand.
    Groppler wrote:
...with links to external sources you have to go to for information, I guess the answer to my question is that there is no true user guide for Premiere Pro CS6 that one can go to for comprehensive information about the application...
No, this is the Help. It has BOTH the comprehensive details about the software and community content where you can see how people are actually using the software. If the Help is lacking details about any feature, please alert me and I will include those details. I work directly from the engineering documentation and include every detail I can about any feature.
Since my time is limited, I don't always have time to make supplemental materials like video tutorials, or articles. That's why I link to them. The crucial info is included in the docs, the community content is material that I personally approve as helpful and supportive to the documentation.
    Groppler wrote:
...without sorting through irrelevant information or navigating to all these third-party sites to see if they have information you are looking for.
None of the community content is irrelevant. I sort through it all very carefully. Community content is supportive and helpful to users. It should not be necessary to sort through these tutorials as the info should be right in the docs. Community content is supplemental. If you don't find the information you were looking for in the docs themselves, create a comment right on the Help page and I'll see to it that it gets fixed ASAP.
    Groppler wrote:
I am quite surprised by this and think the absence of a real user guide is a significant shortcoming of Premiere Pro, not shared by other products on the market.
It is a real user guide. I'm sorry you don't feel that way. If you want a doc with only Premiere Pro CS6 info in it, I can understand that request. Unfortunately, that was impossible for this round.
If you have any suggestions for the next round of Help documentation, a better place than here would be the Community Help forum. Please voice your concerns there, as the people that actually make decisions about Help are hanging out there.
