Premiere Pro suddenly SLOW

I have been using Ppro CS5 for quite a while with no issues.  I am using a HP DV7 with the following specs:
HP Pavillion DV7
Intel (R) core (TM) i7 CPU Q720 @ 1.60ghz
8.00 GB RAM
64 bit os
NVIDEA GeForce GT 230M
I used my computer for my usual AVCHD footage last night with no issues.  I rendered out the footage (It takes FOREVER, but that is typical).
Things that I have changed recently:
Yesterday (note, before I worked with the footage from last night) I changed my memory from 6gb to 8gb.  I used HP memory sticks and got the info for the memory directly from HP (assuming that all the specs are correct for the RAM).
Here are the specs for new RAM:  HP 4GB DDR3-1333
I have updated Quicktime
I have updated all adobe products
I checked out my start up menu and unchecked anything that I felt was unecessary
I am currently running my antivirus software
Video drivers are up to date.  Again, last night, after I changed out my RAM, all was working beautifully.
1. Any thoughts on how to trouble shoot?
2.  Also, it takes me about 10+ times the duration of a clip to render to flv or MPEG to DVD since I moved into CS5.  Is CS5.5 any faster?  Is it worth an upgrade?

Hi Ntreuter,
You can try the below steps to improve the performance
1) Clean the media cache database by clicking on
    Edit>Preferences>Media and click on clean.
2) Reset the preferences. Click on start icon and type %appdata% in the search box
and click on the roaming folder then double click on Adobe folder and then open the
Premiere pro folder and then rename the 5.5 folder to 5.5.old (make sure premiere pro
is closed while renaming the folder). The open premiere pro and check if it helps you.
Thanks

Premiere Pro CC slows down, then  stops working, then won't work, then it won't quit. So I have to force quit every time.
It does not matter if I am working with HD or 4K - same thing happens.
This began happening about a week ago. Nothing really new has changed. I tried to repair permissions and check this from a new admin account because I know that is what Adobe thinks the answer to every problem is. But it did not change anything.
    Mac 10.10.2

Used this tip from Adobe and it worked, all running quick and smooth again.
Hope it works for you too.

  • Premiere Pro painfully slow or crashes while encoding on reasonable system?

Hi Folks, I'm new to the forum and new to premiere pro. I am having a real issue with encoding videos. If I have any fx on like Magic Bullet Looks then the media encoder says it will take around 3 hours for an 8 minute video (h.264 HD for youtube) but my system seems to crash before it finishes encoding (some times blue screen, some times encoder error message).  If I have no fx it still takes a couple of hours for an 8 minute video. This seems like an excessive amount of time, even for encoding my AVCHD files, which I know are notoriuosly slow to encode. I have the latest updates for Looks & PP.
    My system:
    Windows 7 Ultimate
    Intel Q9550
    Asus P5Q-EM
    GTX 480 unlocked for CUDA
    16GB 800mhz DDR2 RAM
    500GB Western Digital HD
Which I would have thought was pretty decent for video encoding!
Anyway any help or suggestions on how to speed things up and maybe stop crashes welcomed.
    Thanks

    Hi
I had some BSOD's too in the beginning after building a new PC for PP CS5, but in my case it was the RAM, like Harm points out to be one reason, that was the problem.
You could run a memorytest or burn in test for a day or two just to stress the PC and see if it find anything.

  • Premiere Pro running slow with Quadro 4000 on Mac-Pro

Hi Forum, I could really use some help.
I recently upgraded to CS6 abnd have been having major speed issues in Premiere Pro ever since. At the time I was running with an ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB and using CS5.5 with no issues.
After installing CS6 my Premiere Pro projects just slowed to a crawl. After doing some hasty research online i "upgraded" to the Quadro 4000 for Mac. It made the applications usable but still frustratingly slow. Exporting projects either directly from Premiere Pro or through Media Encoder is 2-3 times slower than before. I'm ready to ditch CS6 and go back to CS5.5 if necessary as it is serioulsy impacting my productivity.
Any advice on fixing this issue would be greaty appreciated. Hardware, work-flow, software recommendations? I'll take it all!
I also use two Mac monitors (only one of which is hooked up as I am awaiting the arrival of a converter to hook the second to the DVI-I) and would like to use 3 but I cannot run the ATI card at the same time as the Quado as there are only two power supply sources in the mac-pro housing.
My projects typically look like this:
    Project Settings:
    Quicktime DV NTSC
    Codec: DV25 NTSC
    720x480
    Raw sequence:
4 video tracks where I'll align my different camera angles to their correct time markers.
    MTS Format 1080p
    Multi-cam Equence:
Camera edits from the raw sequence:
    Effects Sequence:
Layers for on screen graphis, music etc.
    1 Voice track
    2-3 music tracks (mp3)
    1-2 photoshop layers
effects track (black video fade in and out perhaps, sometimes I'll have a timer sequence dropped in here for on screen countdown).
    System Specs
Processor  3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  NVIDIA Quadro 4000 2048 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)

Have you tried trashing prefs and repairing permissions? It could help.

  • Why is Premiere Pro CS5 slower on my system than Premiere Pro CS 4?

I just upgraded from Production Premium CS4 to Production Premium CS5.  Have Windows 7, 64 bit OS, 9 GB ram,
Intel I-7 quad 2.67 processors (over clocked to 2.90 ghz) with hyperthreading.  I have nothing of any real substance
operating on my system besides Adobe.  I have just loaded in a ton of DVC PRO HD 60 footage and am editing a 30 minute
program.  Once I am in Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5, it works fairly well, everything works well real time.  However, the moment
I click outside of Premiere Pro like to my desktop, then try to click back into Premier Pro, my screen goes white, Premiere Pro says
"not responding" in the title bar and everything freezes for about a solid minute.  CS 4 did not do this at all.  Anyone know what is happening?
    Tks. eddiem

Thank you Harm for the info so far.   I appreciate it.  Seeing that this is an issue, let me give you a little more data than I might normally do in the hopes of helping to resolve this issue and possibly, you will be able to distill from this something of use for all of us.
I tried out what you said to do, clicking in the timeline first or even while the blue wheel is in motion, but it makes very little difference.  Let me give you a little more info.  As an attempt to have resolved this which I have not, I am essentially working offline and the problem still persists.  I have internet connection disabled, I have all anti-virus and firewalls turned off, I have gone through the task manager and have ended every single process not essential to running Premiere Pro CS5.
All it takes is for me to click on the desktop with nothing open and then click back to the Premiere Pro CS5 window whether it be in the timeline or anywhere and I get the blue circle going.  When I do what you say, even while the blue wheel is going, and I try to click on the timeline, the premiere pro window goes white with the blue wheel still going and locks up for at least a minute.
Some other outpoints that may be related to the same issue:
Additionally, when using the media browser and I double click on the P2 media thumbnails to bring the media to the source window, I get a long delay
to load the footage.  Usually about 10-15 seconds for EACH piece just to view it.  Needless to say, this makes editing essentially impossible. I have also tried settings on the memory preferences section changing between "performance" and "memory" not really knowing if that would have anything to do with it, but it didn't.
Another mysterious thing is that my editing tools window never shows up even, even when I reset the editing workspace (window-workspace-reset current workspace (with "editing" bulleted).  I have to manually open up the window and then drag and drop it back to its normal place each time.
Needless to say this is making the experience terrible.
I checked my loaded and running programs to further resolve this to make sure I did not have some unknown system drain, and happened to see I still had the old Production Premium CS 3 installed but not running, so I uninstalled that and it made no difference.  It hadn't been running anyway.
What is frustrating, Harm, is that my Premiere Pro CS4 was running great.  When I started working with P2 media on CS 4 on the same system, I had noticed a similar lag in loading P2 media which I thought was odd, but I NEVER had the delay and blue wheel and white screen clicking from one application to another.  The only time on CS4 I even experience a slow was when I had PPro4, AE4, AME4 and Encore 4 all opened at the same time!
Funny thing though, when I have Premiere Pro CS5 and AE CS 5 opened, AE runs fine, but Premiere seems to be hog and is just slow.  I never have a problem going in and out of the other Production Premium applications.
I am using an Asus computer, with Intel Core i7 processor 920 @ 2.67ghz.  I have standard overclocking software, and when I overclocked my processor to run as an i7-940-2.93 ghz, that lag on the loading the P2 media into the source window went away on CS4.
However, since being on CS5 it now does the same thing.
It is so bad that I thought I okay I will go back to CS 4.  However, now when I try to use CS 4, it is doing the same thing, yet this did not do that before installation of CS5!
Let me give you just one more bit of data in the hopes that it may help in resolving this.  The way I installed Production Premium CS 5 was first via
the trial software.  While that was downloading, I purchased the software and I installed the serial number at the time of installation.  The reason I mention this is that before I purchased it, I was interested in seeing if CS5 would handle a codec problem I was experiencing going from premiere pro to encore DVD ( this will be the subject of another thread) and I was assured by the salesman it would (it didn't) and that the trial software is fully functional!
Well, that is untrue, and the salesmen and the sales supervisors (spoke to them all) are very seriously misinformed.  The Trial version is NOT fully functional, however, you do not find out about it until you actually get the download page and then it clearly says in small print that encore and various HD codecs are not operational as well as some AE aspects on the trial version.
The reason I tell you this is that I don't know if installing via the trial software version makes any difference in how it sets up.
The significance of this is that I was told that Premiere Pro, After Effects and Encore build upon CS4 and you cannot uninstall CS 4 before loading the upgrade to CS5 nor should you uninstall it afterwards.
So this now possibly explains why the previous CS 4 I have on the system is also now responding just like CS5.  (I don't know if it makes any difference, but CS5 installed Premiere Pro, After Effects and Encore in the C:\Window\Programs folder yet all other components are installed in the C:\Windows\Programs(86) folder.  (My dynamic links work fine (so far) between Premiere and AE and Encore)
Okay, Harm, sorry I wrote so much but possibly this will help, and I hope there is something I can do immediately to resolve these serious delay (lag) issues.
PS:  I have three internal hard drives.  CS5 is installed on the C drive same as my OS and all my footage and premiere pro pjts are saved onto a different drive. Everything is 7200 rpm, 1TB,  Sata 3Gb/s..  Except the internal drive where the PrPro Pjts and footage are stored is 2TB , 7200 RPM and 6Gb/s.

  • Premiere Pro is slow and crashes. Is my system the problem?

    Bottom line:
What can I do to make Adobe Premiere run more smoothly on my computer? Once I do any kind of simple modification, such as color correction, I cannot preview unless I render, and rendering takes an exceedingly long time. I also experience frequent program crashes.
    Here's my system specs:
    Mac OS X Version 10.5.8
    Processor: 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory: 10 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    Software:
    Adobe Master Suite CS4
**Two of my three drives are really full. My documents drive has 15.27GB available, another drive has only 2.79GB available, and the last has 45GB available. Perhaps this contributes to the speed issue?
Here's what I figure my options are:
    1) Upgrade to CS5.5
    2) Clear more space on my drives
What's your advice? Is it my system or is this just how Adobe Premiere Pro runs? Do you believe I'd have more success with CS5.5?
    Your advice is much appreciated!!

Get more drives and clean the existing ones.
Once your fill rate on a disk goes over 60%, performance goes down rapidly.
CS5.5 will not help till you have cleaned up your disks. Make sure your disks are not filled beyond 50% of their capacity.

  • 2011 MacBook Pro suddenly slowed to a crawl

So after work today I go to startup my MacBook Pro (2011, 2.2ghz Intel i7, 8gb ram, 1gb VRAM, running Lion), and for whatever reason it's suddenly terribly slow. Never had a problem with it before, but now it takes 20 min to startup, all my apps run extremely slow, and require force quits because they take so long to close. Any attempt to perform one function in one app automatically makes every app freeze for at least a minute or two. I ran activity monitor and got nothing out of the ordinary, but something is definitely sapping my performance. About a week ago I tried (unsuccessfully) installing windows through boot camp, and when it didn't work I uninstalled the partition. That's really the only thing I can think of that'd be a problem, as I had a vaguely similar problem on my last Mac.
I should also mention that since deleting the Windows partition whenever I go to startup my computer I have to hold the Alt key to select my startup disc or else it'll try and start as Windows and then fail (giving me a "press any key to find boot disc" sort of error message requiring me to restart and hold Alt to select OSX, and when checking my partitions it shows just one section, but that one section doesn't include all of my hard drive. I tried expanding it to cover everything but it gives me an error message. Any help would be much appreciated.

When you deleted your failed Windows installation, did you do it using Boot Camp Assistant? I suspect not, but that's what you needed to do to recover the full use of your hard drive. See page 20 of this guide:

    Hey everyone,
Lately I've noticed that my Early 2011 Mabook Pro has been running slower and slower. I find myself seeing more of the running beach ball lately and not sure what has happened. I haven't installed anything new other than updates, and noticed it will run slow on startup and even with just Safari open it will start to slow down opening other apps and things. Any thoughts? I did a Verify Disk in Disk utilities and came back fine.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Premiere Pro Suddenly Stopped Recognizing .MOV Files

I have been working on a project and it includes an .mov file. Never had a problem with that particular file or any others before. Yesterday, while I was working, Premiere suddenly decided it couldn't read the file and when I put the cursor on it, I got the "Media Offline" screen in the monitor. I like Adobe CC, but this is the second problem I have had this week and tech support is never there when I need it. Well worth the 50 bucks a month. Anyway, has anyone else had this problem? If so, is there a fix for it? I am using a PC

Missing Presets/Activation http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1050730?tstart=0 may help, if your problem is one of a "lost" activation

  • AE and premiere pro CC, Slow everything!!!!

    I'm running i7 3930k with gtx 780 and 32gig ram, 2xssds, and 1xhdd 6gps.
AE raytracing is grayed out and not even avail.  everything from rendering to tracking is slow.  My i3 laptop with 8gb memory can render it faster in cs6.
My resource monitor shows im only using 20percent of CPU and practically no GPU.  my cpu is basically parked when rendering and doing something in both AE and premiere.
Basically, I'm stuck with program/s which won't utilize the resources.
My two SSDs and 6gs hdd is not creating bottleneck either.  Like I said, my laptop renders faster in CS6.
what the hell is going on?

I do not. I made sure to uninstall them prior to going to CC. However, after multiple tests/theories I believe to have discovered the issue. I was using a third party plug in called neat video, which is a denosier. I found that overtime I use this effect the link would not hold up and I could not get it to reconnect unless both programs were open. I decided to try red giants denoiser on the same project and I had no issue connecting through dynamic link even when AE was not open. I'm not sure that this is the only solution or if was the root problem...but it seems to have fixed my issue. Everything seems to be working properly now that I have removed the neat video filters in after effects. Thanks for your time and help!

  • Macbook Pro suddenly slowing down

Hi, my macbook pro has plenty of space left and has been fine up until a few days ago... I never have many programs open... so... I got the instructions from another page for what to post up here, so here goes...
    %user = goes between 3.00 and 5.00
    %system = goes between 4.00 and 6.00
    %idle = goes between 90.00 and 93.00
    Page outs = 3.21 GB
    Swaps used = 1.87 GB
    Reads in/sec = 0
    Writes out/sec = 0
(for the most part, though writes out/sec does occasionally bounce up, sometimes to 2, 4, and at highest 16… reads in/sec never seems to go higher than 1 or 2)

  • Premiere Pro timeline slow and laggy / 10 minute timeline / ProRes LT / Trashcan Mac / 10.9.5 / Blackmagic 4K Extreme Card

We are editing :60 second spots that have homogenous 1920X1080 23.976 ProRes LT footage. The timeline is fine as long as there is only one :60 in the timeline. However, if we have 7 versions of the :60 in a timeline, it takes like 15 seconds to zoom in or out of the timeline. If we try to move a clip, we get a beach ball and 45 seconds later the clip moves. Our sequence has no graphics. We tried replacing a mp3 music track with an aif version. That seemed to help a little. The clips were shot with 6 channels of audio, we tried removing as many channels as possible and that helped a little. But the sequence is still pretty much unusable. We have OpenCL turned on, and we modified the sequence settings so we are rendering ProRes LTs. We flushed the media cache. Any ideas why such a short and uncomplicated sequence would be having so many problems?

UPDATE - Moving the project to other suites (Kona and Blackmagic), raises a missing presets error. However, once it gets past that error, there is zero lag in those other suites. Is there any way to figure out what preset or plugin Premiere thinks is missing? Trashing preferences in the original problematic suite does not fix anything. We don't normally install 3rd party plugins. The error is as follows: "The preset used by one or more sequences in this project requires third-party components that could not be located. These sequences will be modified to use a custom sequence setting instead. To continue editing using the original preset, quit the application without saving the project, reinstall any third-party components that are required and reopen the project."

  • Premiere Pro CS3 Crash, Slowness Issue

Hi all. I've been having problems running Premiere Pro on my imac, trying to edit HD video. There are all my specifics. Can someone with the knowledge I don't have take a quick glance and tell me what could be causing this debug error [..\..\Src\VideoFrameManipulators.cpp-563], and if my computer is strong enough to run Premiere? I think it should be.

I cannot address the capabilities, or limitations of FCP, as I have never used it.
However, there are several folk here, who have X-platform studios, and some have, and still use, FCP.
They should be able to help you there.
As for the FW connection to the externals, is it FW-400 (IEEE-1394a) or FW-800 (IEEE-1394b)? FW-400 will still be quite slow, but I edit to/from FW-800's, and they are quite fast. Now, I have to admit that I am editing SD material, so it is not a really useful observation to help you.
Good luck, and look for some of those FCP-users to drop by. Wish I could help, but Steve Jobs will not even let me close to a Mac...

  • MacBook Pro unusably slow while copying files over network

I have a 17" MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo running at 2.33 ghz. I have a gigabit ethernet connection to my 1TB Time Capsule (which also provides my wired and wireless network services). However, when I copy files to the Time Capsule (simply drag and drop copy OR Time Machine backup) my MacBook Pro suddenly slows ways down and becomes almost unresponsive to the mouse--kinda like the network copy is taking up all the computer's resources. I move the mouse and maybe 10 seconds later the mouse pointer jerks across the screen and then stops. I literally can't do anything on my computer until the file transfer stops. This also happens when I copy to or from other Macs on the network.
It also happened before I switched to using the Time Capsule...i.e. when I was using a LinkSys router.
    I'm running OSX 10.5.2.
Can anyone give me any pointers as to where I should be looking for possible solutions to this problem? Or is this quite normal? (surely not!).
    Thanks in advance.

Kappy: I think it's only 100mbps because Network Utility says 100mbps, and the router is (to the best of my knowledge) only 100mbps.
mindaugas: Thanks for the reply. I dont think the ports on it are gigabit as you said (source: http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/linksys-wrt160n/4505-3319_7-32815481.html "The Linksys WRT160N doesn't support the faster Gigabit standard for wired connection, nor does it have USB support"). Anyway, don't think it's overheating, since I'm not having any problem with resetting or dropped connections, just slow. Still, I'm starting to think it can't be much else other than a problem with the router somewhere. Taking it back isn't an option, but maybe I'll stick with it as long as possible and get a better router soon.
Just a thought, could this be anything to do with 802.11g devices connecting to the router as well? Or does this not matter? (Sorry if this is a stupid question - I'm no networking expert)

  • Premiere Pro performance suddenly slowed down to be virtually unusable, even for simple projects

I'm running latest Premiere Pro update on a late 2013, 27" iMac, with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB RAM, Mac osX version 10.9.5.  I know that's not a lot of RAM, but up until the past week or so I was able to edit an hour-long 4K project with that configuration, as long as I ran the Premiere session at 1/8 resolution.  It did drop some frames if I tried to play a long piece of it without stopping, but it was workable for editing purposes.  But in the past few days, the session has slowed down to the point where it starts serious frame dropping from the moment I push play, and is basically unusable.   It also drops audio, and I can hear the drives clattering frantically as soon as I hit play.   My media is on 2-TB G-drives connected via USB3.
    What I've tried so far...
    - Ran diagnostics on the drives, and it found no errors.
    - Tried linking the project to the identical files on the backup drive.  Same problem.
    - I made sure my Mac's energy saver settings were set so that the drives never go to sleep.
    - I deleted all the media caches and Premiere preview files I could find.
    - I reset the Spotlight privacy settings so that they do not index any external drives, and only a few folders on the internal drive.
    - I made sure I'm set to devote the maximum amount of memory (6.5 GB) to Premiere.
    - Finally updated my Premiere software to the latest version.
None of these things made any difference.
    - Then I thought maybe the session had just gotten too big and bloated for my system to handle.   So I made a new project and imported a simplified version of just one sequence, which only references some of my color-corrected video files.  That way I only have to have one external drive connected, and the session is referencing much smaller files.  Still no improvement.
    - So I tried an experiment where I made a brand new Premiere project and sequence.  I imported just 5 video files into it.  The largest file was less than 3GB.  (I do Protools editing on that computer with files much bigger than that, on the same type of extermal drives, with no issues at all.)  With only a single 5-second video clip (and no audio) in the timeline, it still starts dropping frames after about 2 seconds.  If I put another 5-second clip in the timeline, the frame dropping gets twice as bad.  If I try to put a video crossfade on them, playback gets so jerky it's unwatchable.
So basically, I started out being able to edit a 60-minute long 4K video project with video transitions and multiple tracks of audio and video.  (It wasn't perfect, but it was workable.)  And now suddenly, I can't play a brand new session that has 5 small video clips in it, and no audio.    So it's not just my project or sequences that are the problem.  Premiere just no longer seems to be able to access and play back my media with any kind of speed.
What am I missing?  Can you give me some additional suggestions to try that I haven't already mentioned above?  (And yes, I know a lot of you guys probably consider my hardware setup completely insufficient for what I'm doing, and you're probably right.  But it was working well enough for me up to this point.  I'm so close to the end of my project, and I'm really just trying to get back to the functionality I had a week ago, so I can finish.)
I'd appreciate any suggestions.  I feel like I'm running out of things to try.

After a lot of troubleshooting, it appears the problem is related to the color corrected version of my video not being able to play back fast enough.  While my system had no issue with the raw 4K camera files, the increased color depth of color corrected Pro Res versions are just too much for my drives to play back in real time, even at low resolution.   Unless I want to do considerable system upgrades (which I don't), the solution is to keep my color corrected and non-color corrected video stacked on top of each other in the timeline, and to deactivate the video track containing the color corrected ones.  Of course, I can turn the color corrected track on when I need to check something with it, but for playback functionality while editing, I'm limited to the raw camera files.
Obviously this is an imperfect solution.  But because I'm basically done editing and just need to do some title work and a little trimming, I can finish the project working that way.
Incidentally, tech support suggested major upgrades to my memory and video cards.  But if I were going to attempt to troubleshoot this further, I would upgrade to a better RAID system before I would do additional upgrades to my mac.  It really feels more likely that's the primary issue here.
