Premiere reporting a generic error at AE clip replace

Hi guys
I am currently work a project with a lot of greenscreen work.
I do all my keying in AE with keylight and mattes.
The editing is done in premiere with my "raw" footage from Sony NEX VG20 cameras as a kind of proxy footage (MTS files).
When the edit and keying is done, I right click the footage in the project field, and select replace footage. I now select the AE file containing the keying settings.
This is where the problem occurs. normally a get a dialogue box asking what comp i want to use, but now I just get the "The importer reported a generic error" error message.
What can I do, it was working before, and now suddenly it won’t work at all, not even in a new Premiere file importing a AE with just a comp.
Any ideas?

Hi Jim
Thanks for the answer.
If I replace the clips in the sequence/timeline with "Replace clip with..." it starts from frame 0 in every clip, and ignores my editing.
Can I replace a clip in the bin with another "clip/comp" from the same project/bin.?
The "Replace clip with..." is grayed out, and if I select "replace clip" I need to select a file?

  • "Importer reported a generic error" message while importing ProRes 422 clip

Hi all.  I am getting an "Importer reported a generic error" message when I try to import a ProRes 422, linear PCM clip into Premiere Pro CS6.  I have imported other ProRes 422 clips in previous projects without a problem, although those clips did not have the linear PCM codec included.  I have tried to solve the problem using advice on other forum threads.  Changing the file name did not work.  Removing underscores in the file name did not work either.  Copying the file and pasting to a different folder before re-importing did not work either.  The file DOES open in AE, but I am getting the error message without fail when I try to import into Premiere.  Any thoughts on how to remedy the situation?  FYI - I am still running version 6.0.0 of Premiere.  Thanks for your help!

Try going to Help | Deactivate in Pr.  Close Pr.  Reboot.  Launch Pr and activate if requested.  That procedure has helped some users restore missing codecs and presets, maybe it'll help your Dynamic Link.

    Thanks for the reply.
    Some general comments...
    Regarding:
THERE ANY WAY I CAN PUT MULTIPLE RANDUM TRANSITIONS IN TO THE TIME LINE WITH JUST ONE CLICK ? .
There is no transition choice for random transitions across the Premiere Elements 12 workspace Timeline. But, the Elements Organizer 12/Create Menu/Slideshow and its Slideshow Editor does have that random transition choice. So, one possibilitity would be to create your slideshow in Elements Organizer 12 Slideshow Editor and then move the slideshow into Premiere Elements with the Output of Edit with Premiere Elements Editor command.
Pending more details of the slideshow you are creating, I think that you would get your best photo quality and overall results staying with Premiere Elements 12 workspace (1080p) project and the transitions randomized manually.
perhaps applying the default to all (all at the same time),
    using Timeline Menu/Apply Default Transition,
and then replacing transitions randomly for the random transition look).
Please let us know if any of that worked for you.
    Thanks.

  • In Adobe premiere elements 12 it wont let me add a m4a file. It says that "the importer reported a generic error". Please help.

please help, I need to make a video and cant get in my music.

For background information, what computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on?
I could ask you for a lot of details to build a troubleshooting plan. However, in this instance with .m4a file and "importer reported a generic error", I am going to cut to what I believe your workflow problem to be.
You are working with iTunes music. To use them in Premiere Elements (any version), please convert them to .wav file in iTunes.
    To do that....
    a. Open iTunes and go to Music - File Menu/Add File To Library
    b. Edit Menu/Preferences/General and there click on Import Settings
    c. In the Import Settings dialog, go to Import Using and set for WAV Encoder.
    d. OK out of that area.
In the Music Section/Songs, right click your import, select Create WAV Version
Then right click the WAV Version, select Copy, and then Paste it to the computer desktop
from where you import it into Premiere Elements 12 Expert workspace Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets
from where you drag it to one of the audio tracks.
Please let us know if that works for you.
    Thanks.

  • Adobe Premiere Elements 12: Add Media Failure: The Importer Reported a Generic Error

I am trying to add a MOV file to PE 12 I and keep recieving and Add Media Failure Error stating "The Importer Reported a Generic Error".  I have added other MOV files without any issue so I don't know why some MOV will work and others won't.  The only common characteristic I've found is that the MOV files that won't work are files that were recorded with my SLR camera. The location of the files I've added/tried adding are on my external hard drive.

    bunzondarun
Try importing a few of the problematic files from a Local Disc C location like Videos and determine if problem presists. How is the external hard drive formatted, NTFS or FAT32?
Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer with Premiere Elements 12? And, on what computer operating system is Premiere Elements 12 running? Are you running QuickTime and Premiere Elements 12 as Run As Administrator and/or from a User Account with Administrative Privileges?
What specifically is the video compression for the problematic files? And, what is the brand/model/settings for the camera that is recording these videos?
    More later.

What version of Premiere Elements are you using on Windows 8.1 64 bit? For now I will assume Premiere Elements 12 in a NTSC set up.
Your iPhone 5s video is expected to be 1080p @ 30 progressive frames per second? Do you confirm that? Because of the source of your video, it is highly likely that you are dealing with a variable frame rate.
Please give the following a try to see if you then have an "importable" product to take into Premiere Elements presumed 12/12.1.
Download and install the free HandBrake program.
    http://handbrake.fr/
Import your video file into the program.
Make sure you browse to and set Destination (suggested Desktop location)
Go to the Video Tab and set
    Video codec = H.264 (x264)
    Frame Rate = 29.97
put a dot next to Constant for the Frame Rate
Click on the Start at the top left of the workspace
Wait for the "Queue Finished" to appear in the progress bar at the bottom left of the workspace.
Then see if this H.264.mp4 (1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 progressive frames per second file can be imported into Premiere Elements 12 project with a manually set project preset of NTSC/DSLR/1080p/DLSR 1080p30@ 29.97.
Details for setting manual project preset can be found in
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE11: Accuracy of Automatic Project Preset (New Project Dialog) Setting
The details that I have posted in this reply are customized for Premiere Elements and should work fine for you.
We will be watching for your results.

  • Production Premium CS6 syncing problem with premiere to after effects. "The importer reported a generic error."

I have CS6 Production Premium suite. I've had it and it works fine on my laptop for a couple years and just bought a new apple desktop and now when I have a project in premiere, it won't allow me to send it to After Effects. • "The importer reported a generic error" when trying to import an After Effects file into Premiere.

Currently quite new to using both pieces of software - I'm trying to grab a file, either a save or an export, from After effects into Premiere. I've googled around, but I can't find anyone with a similar problem with it being an AE file.
Just looking for some advice on what to do.

Okay so I've searched around most of this forum and as much of Google as I could find - I have found similar problems, but nothing exactly the same; and none of the solutions I've found have worked for me. I've seen a lot of people having trouble connecting to the DL server on the file-selection window, but I don't even get that far - an error message just pops up in the middle of my screen - and my error doesn't mention a server, just that it can't connect to AE DL.
I changed firewall software (which I've wanted to do for months, anyway) and still to no avail.
As for the "The importer reported a generic error" problem also, I can't find any problems or solutions with After Effects files not being able to be imported.

Premiere Elements 13 on Windows 7 (presumed 64 bit).....
    1. Music files and error message...are these music files from iTunes? If so, convert them to .wav in iTunes to convert them to wav version, and then import the .wav version into Premiere Elements 13 project using Premiere Elements 13 Expert workspace's Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets from where you drag the wav version to the Soundtrack.
The following are the instructions for the iTunes converting
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1550
If any problems with the instructions, please let me know, and I will go through them with you.
    2. How you set up the project and the export settings that you select greatly influence your end product result.
    a. What are the properties of the source media?
    b. What project preset did you (manually) or the project (automatically) set to match the properties of the source media.
(If you do not know, please tell us what you see for the readings of Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Size, Pixel Aspect Ratio - even
if the fields look grayed out.)
    c. For your export...Publish+Share/Computer/and then what? And what preset? Did you use the default settings of the preset or did you
customize the export settings of the preset under the preset's Advanced Button/Video Tab and Audio Tab?
Let us start here and then decide what next.
    Thanks.

  • Premiere Pro CC reports "The importer reported a generic error" on import of any files

Ever since the 30 day trial period of CC ran out I have had huge problems. Premiere Pro will not import any files other than m4v files (from iTunes of all things), reporting a generic error.
    I run on Mac.
I have already reinstalled everything. Twice.
This problem has now affected Premiere Pro 6 on my Macbook, which ran just fine until I downloaded CC (against my wishes, by the way - I wanted 6 back on my Pro but no option avaialable.
Does anyone have any ideas. Way beyond frustrating, especially as 'live help' are completely hopeless.
    Thanks.

    >wanted 6 back on my Pro but no option avaialable
Are you saying you lost your install discs?
Or that you purchased by downloading and no longer have the download files?
If you purchased by download, you may go to your account on the Adobe store and download again

  • Importing XML into Premiere Pro CC: "Generic Error"

First off, I've read all the threads relating to this problem from others, but I have a few questions. I'm fairly new to Adobe Premiere (used FCP 7 forever) so I'm still figuring it out, so please bear with me.
I received a hard drive from a client who told me he digitized all his files into Premiere. (A screen shot is below.) When I went to import these into APP CC, it says "The Importer reporter a generic error."
In the Video folder (another screen shot below), there are dozens of MXF files.  These import fine. Video and audio are both good.
There are 37 XML files, and 37 MXF files, so it seems they correlate perfectly. Should I just disregard those XMLs? Should I be using these MXFs instead?
Again, I'm a newbie, so if anybody could shed any kind of light on this for me, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Actually, there's nothing wrong here.  These XMLs aren't to be imported.  They're just sidecar metadata files generated by the camera vendor, they don't import as assets by themselves.
What you really want to do is pull up the Media Browser panel to look at these clips & import your selects into the project, instead of using finder / import files.  The Media Browser abstracts out all the junk that you don't care about & will just show you thumbnails of the clips. It'll even represent spanned clips as just one large piece of media.

  • Premier Pro Error "The importer reported a generic error"

Good Afternoon, Im having an issue with my Mac and adobe premier's dynamic link towards after effects. Every time I try to copy a sequence in and replace it into Adobe After effects composition  from Premier I get this generated error, "Replace With After Effects Composition, The importer reported a generic error". I have tried various ways to trouble shoot this, from re-installing to deleting caches and It still doesn't seem to work.
I do have all updated versions of Adobe Premier and After Effects.
    Pringle

Hi, PringleTheOne, Your problem is that your project after effects (CC or CS) has not been converted to CC 2014 size.
When a  AE project is opened in AEffects  CC 2014, he asks us to automatically convert.
Then, when you open it in Premiere Pro CC 2014 , there is no error message.
    I hope this help.
    Thanks
