Premiere (Shooting Video with Canon 5Dmkii)

Hello all,
This weekend I had the chance to shoot at a parade here in NYC.  I had stage access and decided to shoot video with my DSLR.  I rarely shoot video but usually am okay with the video quality.  My problem tho is not with the video but with the audio.  I am not rigged for professional style video capturing and only have what the camera has built in.  With that said all of my audio was recorded from the camera's built in mic.  I was also standing directly behind the speakers so the audio levels are very high in the Bass and pretty low on the Mids & Highs.  First should I be doing my audio adjustments in Premiere?  If so what are the best methods or Effects to use to gain my levels.  If Premiere is not the best choice for this I do have the CS5 Master Suite 9is there another app that should be used?)
As always thanks in advance for any response and help/direction provided.
Ren Sukhram

Bill, Harm,
Thanks for the responses.  I do have soundbooth.  Question then is can I modify the audio without losing any sync between audio and video.  When I open the file in soundbooth with it overwrite the audio portion of the file only?

Nope, you can only zoom to take still pictures. Zooming with the iPhone's video camera is not supported. However, in iMovie you can zoom in on your video.

  • Shooting film with Canon -wich is the Best?

    Hi!
Help with camera choosing for film shoot
Wich is the best from Canon Hi-Defenition series?
    THank you!

Partly It would depend on the type or video you will be shooting.
It would also depend on which camera you feel more confortable with
and that gives the specs you need.
However, I would narrow your search and consider either the XLH1 or the HHG1.
Canon lenses are remarkable together with other features like uncompressed HD signal through HD-SDI (XLH1) however read their specs here to find what you need:

  • Slight slow-motion for music video with Canon 6D

    Hello.
I'm wondering how I should capture and edit my video to get slight slow-motion in a music video I'm creating. Obviously I would need a proportionally sped up track, like 120%. That I can do.
The question is, what frame rates should I be using? Shouldn't it matematically fit? Like capturing in 29.97 FPS with ~120% track and editing in 25 FPS. How can I do this so the result is perfectly smooth?

Warning: You're going to get lots of contradictory answers because I (we) love to offer advice on projects where my (our) money and time are not at risk. That's part of the elitist attitude around here.
Is it best to shoot green/blue screen, or shoot high contrast footage, make into B & W and use the luma key? <</div>
I'd plan on shooting on a chromakey stage. If you shoot on white cyc, you are stuck with the white. If you shoot on a properly lit key stage, you can do anything. This depends on your ability to shoot on a suitable format and use a crew that knows how to light a key stage. You need a really good camera and good tape format. DV is out of the question.
Use FCP or AE? If AE any other way than the Animation codec for preserving transparency?< </div>
Why do you want to use something other than Animation? You can use a proprietary codec system that supports alpha but you did not mention access to specific cards.
    Can AE's keylight be used with B & W footage? <</div>
Dunno, try the AE forum at adobe.com.
Is there a kaleidoscope filter for FCP? I know motion has a good one.< </div>
You're not going to be doing your effects in FCP.

  • Best settings for Green Screen Video with Canon Mark iii

    HI
What are the ideal camera settings for Green screen video.
    Iso?
    aperature?
Depth of field settings (best to have the green screen a bit out of focus?)
Any other camera settings would be helpful.
    Thanks
    Rowby

    Hi Rowby!
Thanks so much for writing in about green screen shooting with the EOS 5D Mark III camera.  Green screen shooting can come down to some crucial elements and how well you handle the camera and the lighting.
Arguably the most important thing is to have excellent lighting on the screen.  Without this, the keys used to replace the green screen will not be accurate.  So hopefully you have a good set of lights you will be using to actually light the physical screen.
With regards to ISO, shoot as low as possible.  We suggest that you stick in the ISO 200-400 range where possible.  With good, high key, proper lighting on the screen this shouldn't be an issue.
Aperture should actually be in the higher end of the range, you would want to stick to apertures around f/8 and above.  Again, with adequate lighting this shouldn't be out of reach.  This is so the green screen is more in focus, versus having it out of focus, which would not yield successful results.
Use an appropriate lens to the subject, for example if you are doing wide shots- use only the focal length needed for the shoot and no wider.  For head shots, close ups- use a lens that will get you close.
Following these suggestions should give you some pretty good results.  Remember, if this is your first attempt don't be discouraged, green screen shooting can be difficult to accomplish.
We wish you the best of luck in your endeavor!

  • Tethering with Canon 5DMKII on Mac OS 10.6.8

Still having trouble with tethering the 5DMKII, has any solved this issue yet? Or do I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard!!?

If you have any windows computer then you can run the setup CD for this Print Server and configure it with an IP address. Alternately you can get the IP address of this Print Server from the DHCP Client Table. If you router allows static DHCP then you can simply get the MAC address of this print server from the bottom of the unit and configure the Static DHCP for this MAC address you don’t need to configure it with static IP at all.
Once you have setup the print server and assign the Static IP address, setup the ports on Mac OS.
On Mac OS, open System Preferences and select ‘Print & Fax’. Click on the "+" icon (lower left) to add a printer. Click on the IP Printer icon (top). Select "Line Printer Daemon – LPD" and do the following:
    •     In the Address field, enter the IP address of the Print Server.
    •     In the Queue field, enter L1.
    •     In the Name field, enter L1.
    •     Select the printer manufacturer from the pull down menu.
    •     Select the printer model from the scroll box.
    •     Click "Add".
A window should appear showing your newly added printer "L1". Click L1 once to select it. Then click "Printer Setup" (middle right). The Printer Setup window will open. Click on the "Installable Options" pull- down menu and select "Name & Location". The Name and Location window will open. Do the following:
    •     Change Printer Name to the IP address of Print Server
    •     Change Location to IP_[IP of Print Server]
    •     Click on Apply Changes.

  • Shooting video with t4i and 7d

    Hi:
I recently bought the t4i as a 2nd camera in video production.  When shooting, I've come across an issue in matching the looks of the 2 cameras.  I'll set both cameras to "Neutral."  Because you can't dial the color temperature in on the t4i like you can on the 7d, I will choose a pre-set for white balance.  So, for example, I'll set both cameras to the daylight setting.  Now, when I pull the footage to edit together, the 7d has more of a raw, flat look and the t4i will look similar but it has more of a warm tone (more reds/oranges in the tint).  Bottom line, they don't match.
Looking at the insides of both cameras, it looks like they both have the same sensor, but the 7d has dual Digic processors and the t4i has a single Digic processor.  Could that be the reason?  The t4i produces more noise in low-light, also, which I would attribute to the processors.
If anyone can shed light on the Rebel t4i and how I might try and match it to my 7d, it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    sk

    Hi stkirkland!
    Thanks for posting.
You are on the right track in thinking that the hardware in the camera is contributing to the difference.  The EOS 7D has a completely different image sensor and different processors than the EOS Rebel T4i.  How it both captures video and processes that video is different from the EOS Rebel T4i.
Since there are manual white balance corrections you can make on the EOS 7D that you cannot on the EOS Rebel T4i, you can try correcting the EOS 7D so that it looks more like the EOS Rebel T4i instead of the other way around.

I just took 200+ pics with my new camera and when I uploaded them it tells me the image format is unsupported. The metadata tab recognizes the camera and the EXIF info. Why can't I see the images? Is there a way to fix it?

  • My G7X keeps turning off while shooting video..any tips?

I am new to Canon...coming from the Nikon world..and having a problem trying to shoot video with my new G7X.
The camera turns off after a few minutes...any tips?

A very nice choice of camera's that G7X is !!
A speed class of 6 or higher is reccommened to achievve the highest recording lenght in time and GB's.
Just how long before it shuts off ?
Have you formatted it properly in the camera ? Tried a different card ?
This is from your manual and Ive looked at many Powershot manuals...it is the same or very similar for all.

  • Import failed with canon 6d footage after latest update

After I updated to Final Cut X 10.0.8, I've been getting "Import Failed" messages during the import process when taking in footage from my Canon 6D
The import process also seems to be going very slow (slower than usual)
I've tried duplicating the SD card locally on the hard drive and re-importing, but have gotten the same results.
If I click OK on the error dialogue box, the import will continue. but another box will pop up every 5 to 10 minutes or so
    Any ideas?

Hey Russ, it actually works fine for me too the few times I've used it but I point it out as a common denominator with people who have trouble importing that way. Separating the .mov files into their own folder eliminates the camera and card reader, both much slower than just transfering files from a connected drive. But I'm doing newspaper video with Canon DSLRs - including 5D3 video, similar to 6D - almost daily where speed is of the essence and this is by far the most foolproof method I've come across.

  • No App to shoot video?

I see this onslaught of iPhone App's of almost every type hitting the market...but have yet to see one that lets you shoot video with the iPhone's still camera, anyone seen a video app for the iPhone on the market yet?

One reason they're not allowing any might be that they're working on something themselves, I think there's a lot more to come for camera.app, like video, self timer and even photobooth like effects, maybe 2.1 or 2.2, but right now it seems they're working on the 3G fixes, which kind of annoys me personally since I'm not going to switch to 3G, HATE the glossy plastic and that it's not level on the back, if you set it on the table it wobbles around all the time.

  • Does Premiere E support video shot with Canon 5D or Sony XDCAM EX?

Does anyone know if I can edit video shot with Canon 5D or Sony XDCAM EX? I did some research but can't find the answer!

Which version of PrE are you looking into? PrE 10 has DSLR Presets that cover the Canon 5D. Not sure about the XDCAM EX, but this ARTICLE covers the supported formats. I know that PrPro CS 5.5 offers full, native support for XDCAM footage, but do not see it in the PrE list.
    Good luck,

  • (Windows) Premiere cs4 with Canon 5D Mark II

I'm seriously considering buying Adobe's Production Premium, but I am extremely concerned about Premiere's support for the files outputted by my Canon 5D Mark II, h264 .mov 1920x1080p 30fps.
I've done a lot of research and it seems as if a lot of folks with a lot more experience, better hardware components and 3rd party software packages haven't been able to find a workflow that is reasonable in terms of effort and time required just to get a project going.
Can anyone give me a reason why I shouldn't seriously consider moving to an Apple solution with FCP Studio over production premium cs4 with premiere and after effects?
    Thanks for your honest opinions!

If you want to stay on PC, would be the main reason.
I dont know how well FCP handles it; but typically fcp converts everything to an intermediate format (pro res)
I am definitely cringing at the thought of ditching all of my PC components (well, I suppose I can re-use the hard-drives at least in the Mac Pro if that's what I get). I do like a lot about windows, and being able to upgrade my stuff to my own liking rather than being stuck in a closed ecosystem. I also game a lot so that's a consideration too.
The way FCP converts the video to Pro Res sounds pretty smart and definitely take the guesswork out.
    Jim Simon
Best one I can think of is that it would be an Apple solution.
The better solution would be to get a real video camera for video production.  While the world of DSMC is rapidly approaching, we're not quite there yet.
    Thanks for your reply, Jim!
I agree making the switch to Apple and Final Cut Studio might not be the best solution.
I cannot really speak to getting a "real" video camera just because Premiere cs4 can't seem to play nicely with the camera I currently have.
I am able to drag and drop 5D Mark II .mov files straight into imovie 6 HD, have it import (40 gb of movies in 4-5 hrs) and then edit away with no delays on a Macbook (non-pro) with no problems whatsoever. Playback, cutting, transitions, effects are silky smooth. Imovie 6 HD came with my Macbook when I bought it in December 2006. Premiere Pro came out last year didn't it? What gives?
There are people making some "real" good stuff out there with this camera and I love its ability to use all of my Canon lenses (four), high capacity memory cards (ranging from 8gb to 32gb) and camera batteries that I already have. Buying a new, but "real", camera would mean learning a whole new camera system not to mention having to buy all of the accessories, lenses, batteries, memory cards (a Panasonic P2 16gb alone is $800 USD) and carrying all that extra stuff around. If I'm on vacation for instance every morning I would have to make the decision of carting around either the still camera or the video camera instead of just bringing something that could do it both, and potentially miss either a once in a lifetime still or video.
I'm a photographer by trade but I'm getting into video production because I feel like I will need video editing/production skills in the future or I'll be left in the dust. That isn't the only reason of course - I've always wanted to shoot video but couldn't afford or justify a quality camera until now.
Jim why do you prefer Premiere to Final Cut Pro on the Mac?
    Thanks again for replying.
    Matt.

  • Can someone help with importing video from Canon XA10 (AVCHD) into PE 11?

In PE 11 when I import video from my canon xa10 (avchd) the quality is terrible, I also have a canon xa20, 60D and gopro that I video with and they all turn out with great video quality.  Is there a reason why the xa10 video quality is bad? Setting I need to change?

    Thanks for the follow up.
In Premiere Elements 11 and 12 takes over setting the project preset based on the properties of the first file drag to the Timeline. Sometimes it does it right; sometimes not. You can check what the project has set by using the readings from Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and the readings for Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Size, and Pixel Aspect Ratio even if the fields look grayed out. If the project preset is set for NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080p30, then the Edit Menu/Project Settings/General should be as represented in the following screenshot
Please refer to setting the project preset yourself manually and then importing the source media into the project.
