Premiere takes forever to render an AE composition that renders in seconds inside AE. (CS6)
So, I have a Premiere project that's basically a lot of After Effects compositions put together. It's a presentation of an architecture project, so it's mostly perspectives and a few animated sequences. No effects applied in Premiere, just a few cross dissolves and some titles.
Each of the After Effects compositions in After Effect is quickly rendered (I'd say about 2 seconds per frame, if that). But whenever I'm rendering them from Premiere (be it to export them or just "render effects in work area"), they take forever. Like, 30 seconds each frame. For a 6 minute film, that adds up to 3 entire days. That happens even when I set the work area in Premiere to a bit where there's nothing but the AE composition with no effects.
I could just pre-render them all in After Effects and they'll render much quicker in Premiere, but then I'll have to it once for every composition (about 30 in total), and then do it again whenever one of the compositions is changed. That doesn't make a lot of sense.
A few details:
- Rendering in Full HD 23,976fps
- There are a few different types of compositions. All of them are giving me a hard time. Some of them are compositions from 5000px wide PSD files with 2 layers and a linear wipe. Other is are DSLR .MOVs that are warp-stabilized and then timewarped to add motion blur. A few are .EXR sequences composed with a few effects and backgrounds.
- When I'm rendering them in Premiere, Task Manager shows 13% CPU being used (1 core) and 2,5gb RAM. When I'm rendering the exact same sequence in AE, it's usually about 28% CPU and 6gb RAM. "Render multiple frames simultaneously" is unchecked. There's 16gb RAM and 3gb reserved for other applications. Everything is, of course, 64bit.
- I'm using a Windows 7 on a 128gb SSD (plus a 1tb 7200 rpm HDD as a scratch disk and another for footage). i7 2600k, 16gb RAM.
So... any ideas?
Thanks.
P.S.: Man, I think I just got it. You're the best!
I'd been banging my head against the wall for three days. I just realized every single sequence had a keyframe for time remapping where it was set for 100% speed the whole sequence, but went to 0% like 3 seconds after it ended. AND time remapping fx was unchecked (off). No idea why someone would put it there or why that would affect the rendering time of the whole sequence which is set for 100%... but apparently just toggling animation on that solved my problem. So here it is for if anyone else has the same problem.
Here's what Todd Kopriva said in another thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3813422#3813422
"When the headless version of After Effects is called upon to render frames to serve Premiere Pro for a dynamically linked composition, it's just a single process---not the multiple processes that can run when when you're using After Effects as the primary application. Other resources (e.g.,CPU threads, RAM space, hard disk bandwidth, memory bandwidth) also must be shared with Premiere Pro in the Dynamic Link scenario."
So I guess that's the whole answer. In any AE composition that's resource-heavy in terms of CPU, rendering through Premiere is way slower - especially on an i7, which has 8 logical cores. That means you're using a computer that's 8 times slower and it makes a lot of sense to pre-render in AE before, as troublesome as that might be when you have 20 or 30 AE comps in your PPro project.
The "speed" glitch I had helped a lot, but didn't really solve it.
There's a way around that. Not sure it affects anything quality-wise. You just open AE and do a full RAM preview of the sequence. Then go to PPro and "render effects in work area" for that specific part of the project. If you go ahead and do alter the original composition you're gonna now it because the preview in PPro will be gone. A bit troublesome, but better than manually duplicating and pre-rendering 30 comps and having side comps with the actual effects as backup.

Simple title takes forever to render in FCP X...stumped
I have 2008 (2 x 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) MacPro desktop with 8 GB of RAM and 1 Terabyte hard drive that's 70% free.
I'm running FCP X on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and can't figure out why a simple animated title from the Titles menu in FCP X is taking forever to render.
I dropped it into the timeline 10 minutes ago and it's still 0% rendered. Nothing's going on in the Background tasks window. Under Rendering it still says 0% rendered after 10 minutes.
What could possibly be going on that FCP X can't perform a simple title render ("Gradient Center") from within its own program?
I must be doing something wrong, otherwise has anyone anyone else encountered this problem?Check your settings in Final Cut Pro->Preferences->Playback. Do you have Background Rendering turned on? If not you can force a render from the Modify menu.
Notice in the preferences there is a time setting for background render. It won't render until you stop working and then it will wait for the time specified. Even if it starts rendering, if you begin working again it will stop. -
Started after last auto update several days ago. A few other sites are slow to load while many are good but Facebook just won't present it's usual mix of pre-programmed scripts and links but comes up eventually as part HTML script with a log-in box and when you log-in it then takes forever again and just gives HTML type script for "Friends" "messages" etc. but if you click these it goes nowhere!
Also it won't let me clear history at all despite many tries. I removed and reloaded the program last night but no positive effect.I still haven't resolved this problem. Here is some more information...
youtube is the only website that has started working, but it sometimes stops working again.
There are many other sites that don't work, cnn.com, washingtonpost.com (sometimes), and a lot of others.
I have contacted our internet service provider and they said that they had nothing to do with the problem.
Some websites will not work at all. Safari tells me that it can't find the server. Some that do this are ups.com, computerworld.com, and others.
I think that the problem is that, for some reason, our mac computers can't access certain servers where we are. (We are at a small ski resort (on the mountain) in Canada.) I think this because when a site doesn't load properly there are several errors and they are all "can't find host" errors from a couple of the same sites (ex. example.something.something).
*Also, I ran a test on speedtest.net on the laptop and one of our iMacs and the results were way faster than anything actually loads/downloads or than the activity monitor shows, even when checking the activity monitor at the same time as running the test. -
Problem with Top N Query when no rows returned (takes forever)
I have a table with 100 Million rows and I want to get the latest N records using:
SELECT * FROM
(SELECT * FROM tablename WHERE columnA= 'ABC' ORDER BY TIME DESC)
WHERE rownum <= N;
This works fine and is very fast when there are rows with columnA= 'ABC' but when there are no rows with columnA= 'ABC' the query takes forever.
The strange things is that the inner query returns immediately when run on it's own when no rows with columnA= 'ABC' exist e.g.
SELECT * FROM tablename WHERE columnA= 'ABC' ORDER BY TIME DESC
So why does it take for ever for to run:
SELECT * FROM (no rows inner query) WHERE rownum <= N;
I have also tried using:
SELECT * FROM
(SELECT columnA, rank() over(ORDER BY TIME DESC) time_rank
FROM tablename WHERE columnA='ABC')
WHERE time_rank <= N;
which returns instantly when there are now rows but takes much longer than the first query when there are rows.I cannot see a real difference:With histogram we can see a difference on the elapse when no row returned and into explain plan.

Printing document takes forever.Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Using OS 10.6.4, each time I print a document, I have to wait and wait for the printer to print.
I'm using HP LaserJet M1319F. Driver version: 1.3.0.261
Is this normal?
The first document, I have to wait a couple of seconds before the printer respond, but if I try to send a second document right away before the other one is print, it take forever. I just did a test and the second document to be print 42 secondes of waiting.Try repairing permissions and then restarting your computer. It just may speed up your printing.

Safari Take Forever on the Internet
I've just upgraded to a G5 tower, with 8g of memory, and 2.6 ghz ... and it still takes forever for Safari to load anything that has active ads or plugins. Go to Instapundit's page ... it's just typeface and ads and even with this new setup it takes on average 11 seconds to load, and often hangs. (Safari 5.0 with updates, btw)
My pal's Dell laptop BLAZES through page loading on the Internet. And it's four years old. His Windows setup loads You Tube videos lickety split. The G5 lumbers along stumbling and halting through the download and plays the video in halting stuttering chunks (cable interface at 8.0 mbs)
This is depressing. What's the point of continuing to spend money on higher Macs if they won't work with the WWW? Heck, my daughter's iPhone plays You Tube right off the internet faster than this!
What's wrong?HI,
for Safari to load anything that has active ads or plugins.
Safari plugins could be the glitch.
And try uninstalling the reinstalling a new copy of Flash.
Uninstall Flash
Install the most recent version of Flash here.
Now repair disk permissions...
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
If reinstalling Flash didn't help, go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Also, go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and move the "cache.db" file to the Trash. Relaunch Safari.
My pal's Dell laptop BLAZES through page loading on the Internet.
You are talking about two different computers with two completely different configurations.
I've just upgraded to a G5 tower, with 8g of memory, and 2.6 ghz
Sorry to say the PowerPC can't compete with an Intel Mac regardless of RAM.

I am trying to do speed up AE, to the extent it is possible at all. So I have read me up on several articles covering this topic, among others this.
My first attempt to speed AE up, is to prerender a composition. It takes forever! The entire project, with several comps, time warp, keylight, masks, 3D layers etc. takes 7 minutes to render - complete. When I try to prerender on of the compositions, the gauge moves at snail speed, and estimated time for the prerender is 1 Hour and 37 minutes..
Edited:
Ok, I found the culprit: The Timewarp.
The comp I try to prerender uses an underlaying comp. This underlaying comp has just one AVI, and this AVI has just one effect added - the Timewarp. When shutting Timewarp off - all runs fast.
The big $10 000 question now is why the Timewarp slows down prerendering one particular comp - but does not slow down rendering the main project where the comp containing the Timewarp is included!
Edited - 2:
I now tried to prerender the comp with TimeWarp only. It is an AVI 960 x 540 pixels, 25 fps. And it has one single affect added - TimeWarp. This needs 24 minutes to render..
And the whole shebang - all comps, effects, layers (more than 20) takes 7 minutes to render.. Can the layer (comp) in question somehow have been rendered anc cached in the background, while I have been working? I have disk cache turned on. And that AE now is ignoring this cache?
I need a detective, Poirot or someone with his capacity!
IngvarI can say so much that the Timewarp effect performs beautifully in the final render, It is one of the first times I have used it, and I am very impressed. I adjust the speed several places, to match one action with another action. At a certain point, Timewarp only has a few frames to stretch over a longer time span, and it does this just beautifully, real convincing slowmo. So it definitely kicks in when doing the final render.
Anyhows - I do not give it too much thought.
What I did, I rendered the original clip and accepted 24 minutes to get it done. I then used it in the main comp, and can now preview at full speed. But one and a half hour in a nested comp - as opposed to seven minutes in the final render.. I suspect you are right, AE is working too hard and thinking too much I believe..

Motion 4 keeps freezing. Nothing else open. Changes take forever
Motion 4 is not working. Not sure if its the imac which is the biggest and newest one or if its motion which is also the newest one. Motion keeps freezing and changes take forever, mouse icon keeps thinking and nothing happens
Dude.
Grow some skin. Imagine this exchange...
Patient: I am a white male in my mid twenties and I don't often feel well.
Doctor: Oh - that's because... oh wait... I have no idea, because you provided absolutely no information.
Patient: I did provide information but you weren't listening. I don't often feel well. What part of that is so hard to get? If you don't want to bother to listen then don't respond with sarcastic comments.
Do you imagine there is one set of circumstances or a single setting that leads to performance issues in every case? Project size, duration, kind of project, content, amount of memory, render settings, disk space, media codec, etc. These are just a few of the details that we have no idea about in your case.

3D Shape taking forever to render
Hello All,
I have simple composition that animates a two shapes that I am using as a "screen" to show photos. The shapes are 3D; the camera movement is minimal. I have an Ambient light and two Spot lights.
I am on a one year old i7 processor with 16 GB of RAM. Cache files are written to an SSD.
Still it is taking a long time to render (it's a three minute project and takes about 20+ hours to render), and there's no pics added - just the "screen".
The final project is similar to the many templates you can find that show photos/videos. It's basically a fancy slideshow, but unlike those you can buy, it will hold 25 to 30 pics.
Any thoughts on what I can do to either use something other than a 3D shape (but still keep it 3D) or change parameters or workflow to cut down the render time. . . I am pre-rendering the composition now (which will take the 20+ hours) but obviously, if I want to change anything with the movement or the overall length, it means another day of rendering.
Thanks in advance,If you are using the ray-traced 3D renderer and are not using a GPU that provides acceleration for that feature, rendering will be very slow:
http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2012/05/gpu-cuda-opengl-features-in-after-effects-cs6. html
In general, I recommend using the CInema 4D integration with After Effects over trying to use the rather limited ray-traced 3D renderer within After Effects:
http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2013/04/details-of-cinema-4d-integration-with-after-ef fects.html
By the way, 20 hours is not a long time for a 3-minute composition. People who work in 3D (in any 3D program, not just After Effects) often have renders take all weekend just for 30 seconds. 3D is computationally expensive. -

Searching for clips in project window takes forever...spinning ball
Not sure what could be causing this but searching for any clips in Premiere Pro CC project window takes forever.
I'm editing on a 2013 iMac i7 maxed out with full RAM (32GB) and my project along with all clips is on an external 4TB thunderbolt drive with over 1TB of free space.
Searching for a single clip, will often take minutes when typing the clip's name in the project window. It should pop up within seconds but it takes literally can take up to 5 minutes as the mac spinning beach ball keeps flashing. Is this normal? Hopefully the latest update will make the project window searches much faster.
I just can't understand it as I had a project of similar size in FCP7 where I could call up clips within a split second just by typing the name.HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Go to ~/Library/Preferences and move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash and restart your Mac.
The tilde "~" character represents your home folder.
Since the problem happens in more then account I'm not sure if trashing the .plist file will help but won't hurt to try.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
anyone have any idea why it would take forever for the Finder selection window to pop up?
Try repairing disk permissions...
Quit any open applications/programs. Quit Disk Utility and *restart your Mac.*

LR4 - Book module takes forever to load
OK....so I've asked this question previously on both here and the Photoshop Feedback forum, without any real answers/responses. So I'm giving it one last shot....
Here's the deal - when I first start LR4, loading the Book, Slideshow, Map and to a lesser extent, Web modules take forever. Especially the Book module - it takes a good 25-30 seconds to load. Once it's loaded it's fine. I've been told everything from "that's normal" to there's something wrong with my computer.
Laptop Spec's - Spring 2010 15" MBP 2.4 i5 with 8gigs of RAM, 256mb video RAM, 500gig 7500rpm HD.
Other's have reported similar delays (none reaching 25-30 seconds though), where as others don't have any issues at all. Would appreciate any thoughts/input/encouragement before I kick LR4 to the curb permanently. When you open Lightroom and go to the Book Module the first time, it must do two things:
1. The Book module has a more sophisticated text engine than the other modules and it must load fonts that are installed on the system into memory. The more fonts on your system the greater the potential delay.
2. To a greater extent, when you first open the Book module, all of the page-templates must load into memory for access. Once loaded, they do not need to be loaded again until you close Lightroom.
No matter how much processor or Ram you have will not appreciably affect these two operations. They are purely disk-read operations and are primarily limited by your disk data path.
Map Module requires interface with the internet to access Maps.
Web and Slideshow can be sped up by not having large numbers of available images standing by to render. Keeping the toolbar set to "Selected Images Only" rather than "All Filmstrip Images" helps this. -
K7N2 Delta ILSR Takes forever to boot.
Specs:
K7N2 Delta ILSR Mobo
Athlon xp 2500
Kingston Hyper X 2700 DDR 512mb (its on the list)
Geforce 2MX 32mb AGP videocard (I dont play games)
3 Com 56k Win Modem
IBM GXP120 60 gig ata133 Hard drive
Pine 12X DVD drive
LG 24x10x48 CD Burner
Antec 300W power supply
The problem is that it takes forever to install and boot windows with faster processors for some reason. I origianlly built this system with my old Athlon 1.33 and it had these problems. I then tried a 900mhz athlon and it worked great, so I figured I damaged my 1.33 somehow. I ordered a 2500+ and a zalmann cpu cooler and now am back to where I was, when the system starts it seems very unstable and the screen goes blank for 10 minutes while its booting. It shows about 3 seconds of the starting windows screen then the screen will go blank for a while anf there will be no hard drive activity then it will come back about 10 minutes later and then boot. Sometimes the system will work fine then sometimes I cant even open my computer i just get the searching flashlight icon where my drives should be. I have updated to the lastet BIOS. Also while installing windows I get ocasional long pauses where it is doing nothing at all then it will just magically conitnue and do it in a fashion I would expect a machine of this speed to do.Hmm not sure about the cable position on the CD drives, ill have to check that when I get home. All the jumpers are set correcly, and the hard drive is all by itself and its on the right connector. Thanks for the ideas, this problem is really killing me, I havent had these kind of hardware problems in years. The thing I dont get is why it works good with the 900mhz and not with the 1.33 or 2500+

HI, I just got a Macbook Pro. It's great but my mail doesn't work at all. It will come up correctly, but take forever to download messages, then won't delete them, then won't save them to folders. Then when I go to quit mail it's like it gets stuck between quitting and not. I have to force quit, then restart my computer if I want to pull up my mail again. How can I fix this?
If you just got your new MBP you have phone support from Apple (which is quite good) call them. 800-692-7753 tell the automated answerer "mail technical support" you'll have human quite quickly. Hope this helps.

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D takes forever to erase 100MB file from CD-RW disc
My new MBP works phantastic. Only one thing is weird. The MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D takes forever to erase contents on a CD-RW, about 5-10 times longer than my nearly 5 years old IBM Thinkpad T30.
Is this normal and expected?
MacBook Pro 15'' 2.33 Core 2 Duo 2GB RAM 160 GB HD Mac OS X (10.4.9) IBM ThinkPad T30 XP ProIt might take longer, it depends on the type of drive your Thinkpad had. Most notebooks, even older ones, have 8x DVD ROM drives, while due to the thin nature of the MBP it has a 6x DVD ROM drive, which means it does work slower.
