Premiere to Speedgrade

Hello,
I've recently finished a 3 minute edit in premiere. I've rendered it completely, and now I'm ready to start color correcting in Speedgrade. The only problem is, once I've selected my sequence and sent it to speedgrade speedgrade doesn't seem to recognize that it's there.
Speedgrade show's me a .wav file in the timeline that is as long as my finished cut, but there doesn't seem to be any sign of video files, and there is no black screen or anything that would suggest a video being present. Also the .wav file doesn't play any audio, so that seems to be a problem as well.
I am working with R3d files from a red scarlet, and have had no problem with them in Premiere. I've also tried to simply bring a raw R3d clip into speedgrade, which works fine and plays in real time.
I just can't seem to get my completed sequence into Speedgrade. I've tried creating an EDL from the completed premiere sequence, and speedgrade gives me an error message saying "Unsupported edit info".
This must be an incredibly simple problem that I'm having, but I can't for the life of me - and thru all the forums I've read - figure it out.
Thanks in advance,
Christine

There should be a .dpx file on the timeline in speedgrade. Maybe you don't have the video layer turned on in your sequence when you choose send to speedgrade in the file menu? I don't know but it sounds like all you're getting is the audio when you send it over.

  • Roundtrip workflow from Premiere to Speedgrade to Premiere?

    Hi!
I see how to bring my project from Premiere to Speedgrade. But how do I continue working with Premiere and see the reflected grading?
So, changes made in Speedgrade, don't update the look or footage in Premiere?
    Thanks

  • Premiere Pro & SpeedGrade CC keep crashing in Windows 8.1

I just bought a brand new MSI laptop with Windows 8.1 and installed the CC suite. Premiere Pro and SpeedGrade continually crash when I try to use them. Premiere Pro crashes almost every other time I open it. Once it is open it works fine, but almost every other time I start it, I have to close and reopen it. SpeedGrade does the same thing, except sometimes it crashes in the middle of using it, which is VERY frustrating. These are the only programs on my computer that give me problems. The programs are installed to the OS partition on an SSD drive. Below are the error messages I receive for both programs and a copy of my computers specs. Please help me!

  • How to properly configure a graphics card for Adobe Premiere Pro, SpeedGrade, and After Effects?

Alright, so I have the following system configuration:
    2 NVIDIA Geforce GTX 970s
    5960X CPU
    MSI X99 Gaming 7 Motherboard
    32 GB DDR4 RAM
256 GB and 1TB Samsung 850 Pro SSDs
Basically, although I have the whole system built together, I'm unsure how to check and know whether or not Adobe Premiere Pro is actually using the graphics card or not.  I know that it has to be using some of it, otherwise it wouldn't launch properly (as I discovered from a recent experience.)  However, I don't know if there are, perhaps, certain settings within the NVIDIA control panel that should be configured so that Premiere Pro can use the card to its full potential.  Here is an example of what I'm talking about:
In other words, these are (I'm pretty sure) all of the default settings that the control panel applies to Premiere Pro.  However, I'm not sure if there are any settings in here that I need to change or not.  So what I'm looking for in a response to this question:
What settings, if any, should I change for Premiere Pro (as well as other adobe applications that can utilize all the strength of the GTX 970)?
How can I check the GPU activity to know that it's being used during a render?  (For example, I can check the CPU utilization with the Task Manager while I render to see that it's being utilized to 100%).
If, perhaps, something else goes wrong and even with the right settings, let's say the card still isn't being fully utilized, what other settings might I have to change to make sure that the GTX 970 is being fully used by Adobe Premiere Pro/After Effects/SpeedGrade CC 2014?

If you want a benchmark to measure the performance of Premiere Pro's utilization of  your: disk system, GPU and CPU use our Premiere Pro BenchMark (PPBM)
When you finish running the test and then run the script, you will get this report
This happens to be the result of my laptop (with SSD drives and a GTX 765M GPU)
The disk performance is self explanatory.
Number 2 is a seven layer very complex timeline with heavy CPU and GPU assistance, without GPU hardware acceleration (CPU only) it would take greater than 1350 seconds.
Three above is a measure of a exaggerated timeline using many, many GPU MPE accelerated effects and features that will use a GPU at 99% load (54 seconds above) and a CPU only export of the same timeline (802 seconds).
If you want to compare your results to others you have to register on the PPBM7 site to see the results.
EDIT! I corrected the number in 2 above originally I said 900 seconds but really it was greater than 1350 seconds

  • Dynamic link from premiere to speedgrade not working, constantly crashing

    Hello,
please help me. I'm trying to color correct my video in Speedgrade (I'm not using 4k files).
When I try to send the project from Premiere CC to Speedgrade whit dynamic link, everything seems fine, except that when the project finishes to be downloaded from SG, it crashes.
And it's the same if I try to open a random video clip from inside SG. I open it, put it in the timeline, but when I click on Looks, it crashes.
All the videos I'm using are quicktime, h.264.
    Thanks a lot

The Direct Link process should totally bypass Sg's preferences and "needs" as far as frame-rates & sizes & such not. But clearly this whole issue is affecting people with a variety of gear, and it doesn't seem to care if it's a newish or oldish video card. So they've a quirk in their code to deal with.
Not that Sg deals with framerates perfectly all the time ... I've been having a devil of a time the last couple weeks with any attempt to export an EDL into Sg from PrPro. Footage reads as 29.97 ... sequence is 29.97 ... and the EDL is 29.97. But Sg insists that the EDL is 30 fps ... and even though it's got that bit in the prefs to account for such things if there really IS a difference ... "if edl is x & footage is frame-rate above conform to rate below" and all ... haven't been able to get Sg to accept the EDL. It will play the first 5-6 seconds of each clip & then the monitor goes black and it says "Media out of  range" ... funsies.
Given the number of times or reasons one might need an EDL approach in emergency situations ... or as I was and a number of others are still trapped into because of this bug ... I've been trying to figure this bugger out. Still trying ...

  • Sager NP9570 - After Effects/Premiere Pro/SpeedGrade

    Hello everybody,
I want to buy a laptop that will double as my desktop.  I want to work in After Effects, handle 4k in Premiere Pro, color grade in SpeedGrade, and process audio files in Audition.  I’m new to video editing/effects/grading, having had under one year of evenings and weekends spent on many failed projects and learning the hard way how simple things are done.  That being said, I’ve never been an Apple guy (I think they’re overpriced for performance) so their laptops are out of the question for me.
My laptop of interest right now is Sager NP9570.  Here’s my provisional build:
    i7-4930K (6-core)
    32GB Quad Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz
Nvidia GeForce GTX 880M GPU with 8GB GDDR5 Video Memory
SSD1 (OS and Adobe CC): 120GB Samsung 840 EVO Series SATA3 Solid State Disk Drive
SSD2 (raw footage): 500GB Samsung 840 EVO Series SATA3 Solid State Secondary Disk Drive
SSD3 (projects): 500GB Samsung 840 EVO Series SATA3 Solid State Secondary Disk Drive
The screen is 17.3” and I am thinking of going with the 72% NTSC matte screen option, instead of the 90% NTSC glossy version.  It’s not for wanting to work in blinding sun that I say this, but because I heard the 90% NTSC screen can wreck damage to your grading (please let me know if I’m wrong).
I should add I’m also planning to take it with me on long trips through SE Asia.  It is heavy (essentially a desktop packed in a laptop), weighing 17 pounds including the ungodly 5-pound power brick.  I will basically use it as a mobile desktop, lugging it around in my suitcase and leaving it behind in the hotel room, while I go out to shoot.
I appreciate your support and words of advice.
    Serban

My suggestion is to go to ADK for real expert guaranteed computer building.  They are probably the most qualified computer builders for Adobe Video products and they are very straight forward honest group to deal with

  • How to send a sequence from Premiere to SpeedGrade?

When I Direct Link a sequence to SpeedGrade it opens Premiere again after saving the project.
My SpeedGrade app is on trial version.
    Thank you.

First, both programs ... PrPro & Speedgrade ... need to be on similar-level releases for the "Link" to work. That's caught a number of people who've not realized their say PrPro is actually back a mini-release or three and the trial of Speedgrade or AeFx is brand-spankin' new.
Second ... can you start up Speedgrade by itself? If it loads into operating status, you can open a PrPro project/sequence and it will work just like you started from PrPro. I've seen a couple people who had troubles with the Direct to Speedgrade option try this ... and then click the icon upper-left in the Sg window "return to PrPro" and find that somehow their computer just got smart enough to actually like, work. And could then find the two programs and go forth & back with aplomb.
Anyway, hope you get going. This Direct Link is for most things highly addictive as a workflow ...

  • Conditional export from Premiere to SpeedGrade

How do I export just a portion of ONE clip ONLY from the Premiere timeline to SpeedGrade?

I'm not sure I understand you correctly yet. The work you have done in your Premiere timeline is pretty much finished, is that correct? The clip portions in the timeline are the exactly the ones you want to process in SpeedGrade - without further trimming?
I don’t want to export to it any more than I’m actually going to use in my Premiere project.
It sounds to me like you think that Premiere was outputting more than needed. If you chose "Send to SpeedGrade", the whole timeline gets exported - but ONLY what's in the timeline, not the complete source file(s) behind it..!
How long is your timeline? What's the file format and codec of the hour long source clip? DPX are an arguable solution with pros and cons, sometimes necessary, sometimes replacable by using a different workflow that doesn't involve rendering when going to SpeedGrade.

  • Nvidia GTX + Quadro for Premiere and Speedgrade - is it possible?

    Hi,
I have a workstation with Nvidia GTX 470 GPU. I am doing a lot of color grading work for my projects and I am considering to purchase HP Dream Color 10-bit monitor. As GTX don't output 10-bit, I am thinking about purchasing a Quadro GPU just for output preview purpose.
Does anyone know is it possible to put those two cards together in the same PC (Windows 8, 64-bit) without issues? If so, can I use cheapest Quadro GPU, for example K420? The main idea is using GTX as workhorse for rendering and live timeline preview and Quadro for 10-bit preview on HP Dream Color.
    Thanks,
    Tom

Generally it is not advised by nVidia as they do not test having two different families of drivers running at the same time.  That does not mean that it would not work but there have been reports of problems in the forums.   Of course if anyone is successful it generally does not get reported.
You might have to consider removing the GTX 470 and getting something like the K2200 with a few more CUDA cores than your GTX 470 and also 10-bit output.

  • Premiere, After Effects, Speedgrade, Media Encoder and... the dynamic link

My feeback after working with the dynamic link these days. Basic project. Editing, color correction, animated titles.
    I'm using a 3.5Ghz iMac 24GB Ram and a GTX 780 4GB. (2014 versions & last updates).
Rendering the timeline in Premiere is sometimes extremly slow (with AE comps). Need to quit and reload the project to get a good speed.
Too long delay of refresh for the AE compositions inside Premiere (with the dynamic link). Need to go in AE then back to Premiere to get the refresh.
When i export to media encoder i need sometimes to save then send it 2 or 3 times to get the last edits in the export.
Even worse with the AE compositions. If i change something in AE then export from Premiere i need to quit and reload Media Encoder to get the last changes.
Really fast export from Premiere to Speedgrade and from Speedgrade to Premiere.
But !!! Lumetri fx is not compatible with AE.  And Speedgrade doesn't support BlackMagic but only this nVidia Sdi thing.
And why we could not export h264 from AE anymore ???
    Quiet disappointing :-(

Using Premiere Pro CC 2014.0.1 (build 21) and Media Encoder 2014.0.1 (build 8.0.1.48) on OS X 10.8.5
If I Export a video from Premiere, I can continue using Premiere, but if I Queue an export, returning to Premiere produces the beach ball of death. If I give it time, the beach ball goes away and the arrow returns, but trying to click anywhere in Premiere simply returns the beach ball. There is nothing to be done but Force Quit Premiere. I can leave Premiere and run any other application, but if I leave to execute the Media Encoder queue, I cannot return to Premiere and use Premiere. I can visit Media Encoder (call it to the foreground) and return to Premiere after the queue is done.
My current workaround is to use Export from Premiere and not use Queue from Premiere.

  • Best workflow for DSLRs and Speedgrade / Premiere?

Can anyone suggest a workflow for DSLR footage using Premiere and Speedgrade? I would like to be able to roundtrip and do a light grade on clips and sequences before completed the offline edit. Is this possible? I know in the video tuts it seems to work for Red footage, but I couldn't get it to work for me with my 5d mark iii footage. It's all new to me having recently switched to Adobe from FCP and also to DSLR from camcorders. Thanks

Speedgrade isn't designed to go pre-edit, so right now there's no dynamic link with the other CS6 apps. It's intended to sit post-edit in a classical film studio workflow, with Sg ingesting only the final edited frames and exporting your production masters.
If you "send" a Premiere Pro sequence to Sg you will render out a single DPX image sequence (including effects and transitions, and without any references to edit markers or original filenames) and so importing that back into Pr would flatten your entire timeline to a single clip. Any changes to the Pr timeline and you'd have to do it all over again.
You can export an EDL from Pr and use that in Sg to read the native footage (provided it's compatible*), but  grading is not stored into the original files so it won't re-appear in your Pr timeline unless you manually re-import.
If you want to use Sg pre-edit, the options are:
Grade all your footage before ever touching Pr, export everything to lossless video or image sequences and work with those, forgetting about the original files completely (you'll need a bunch of disk space and hopefully a MOS shooting pattern, as your audio will be split out).
Grade a sample of every clip you're using, then save a Look for each one. Export the Looks as 3D LUT files (.cube) and use a plugin to apply them to your clips. Right now there's no official plugin for Premiere (Magic Bullet LUT Buddy isn't certified past CS5) but After Effects can apply both the .cube and the .look files via the "Apply Color LUT" effect. Note that some changes in Sg are not included in the Look, such as the choice of color space and tone curve, so what you see in Sg may not be what you get back in Pr.
I'm not downplaying the abilities of Sg, but it's a colorist's tool and doesn't sit very well in the CS6 unified concept of "one person can make a movie". It helps to think of it in terms of the union system in Hollywood - an editor never grades and a colorist never edits, so their tools look completely different, work completely different, and the electronic conversation only goes in one direction.
*Sg was designed with digital cinema in mind so it doesn't work with interlaced footage, plus it generally assumes you're feeding it log so be careful when picking defaults. It's one occasion where something like the Cinestyle fake-log profile for Canon DSLRs comes in handy.

  • Speedgrade TO Premiere

I've found tons and tons of articles/videos/etc going over transfer from Premiere to Speedgrade. Perhaps it is just me, but I have yet to find a SINGLE article/vid/etc that explains the other way around....speedgrade to premiere. I gave up about a month ago and finally spent half the day today figuring I needed to import as a sequence to get it work in Premiere.
Perhaps some of you are guru's but when the average geek like myself who does some hobby video work and works with standard video file comes up against a folder full of thousands of files it gets very confusing.....especially upon first use. I can't for the life of me figure why Adobe hasn't addresses how to work/import these files into premiere. Maybe it is hiden deep in the bowels of adobe help articles or something. But premiere to speedgrade is abundant as far as help.....very little on the other way around.
Am I the only nob here that has had difficulty with this?

  • Speedgrade can't open premiere project

When I try opening my Premiere Pro project in Speedgrade using "File > Direct link to adobe speedgrade..." Premiere closes, Speedgrade opens up and then I get this message "Error, this project was saved in a newer version of Adobe Premiere Pro or Adobe Speedgrade and cannot be opened in this version.
Now, I'm a subscriber of the Creative Cloud since two days back and as far as I can understand I have the latest versions on both applications if that is what is being provided by the cloud/suit.
What might be the problem and solution?
    Best, Petter

It doesn't cause a problem for me, and we have not heard of this on the forum as far as I can remember.
Try creating a brand new comp in a brand new project. Add some video and audio. Does that export OK?
I don't mean to be rude, and in no way do I want to be insulting, but I would feel bad if I didn't ask and it turned out to be the problem....
Since that is the symptom if you try to open a Pr project created in Ae using Premiere Pro CS6 - please check that you are opening the correct Premiere Pro. I forget which icon is which now and then and open CC when I meant to open CS6, although I have never made the reverse error. Yet.
