Premiere Won't Play

I am new to Premiere Pro.
Today the program lost its capacity to play anything from the timeline. JKL keys have no effect. Spacebar has no effect. Double clicking on a clip in the timeline does nothing. Both the source and program windows remain black. When I click on the play button under the program window it changes from the play button to the stop button, but it does not play. When I double click on a clip in the project window the clip does appear in the source window and will play.
When I double click on a clip in the timeline and then click on the program window, the clip will appear in the program window. However, if I then push the JKL keys, the program window goes back to black. Scrubbing the playhead accross the timeline does produce a change in the audio meters, but nothing happens in the program window.
I am baffled. Can some suggest what's wrong or what I've done to produce this behavior?
I am using a Mac 2x2.4 Quad Core Intel Xeon. OSX 10.6.8. 20GB Memory. I have a Matrox MXO2 LE Max connected. Software version 2.3.3.0016. Squence setting Editing Mode is "Matrox Player". Footage being edited orginated on a Canon 60D and is full HD.

I think you press/hold Ctrl+Alt+Shift while starting program to reset preferences to factory defaults

  • MOVs play fine, but Premiere won't play the audio

I have a bunch of MOV files (from a cheap digital camera) that will play fine on say VLC, and they import into Premiere CS5, but when I play them in Premiere, or put them into a Sequence, the video plays but the sound turns to a high pitched beep after 1 second. Every file does this, and all other files (including MOVs from different cameras) are working fine in the same sequence. Any ideas?

I had a similar problem, I'll tell you how I solved it.  Understand that I am a newbie at video editing and Premiere Pro.  I shot videos on a DSLR (.mov) and then transferred them to my computer.  I then imported them into Premiere CS6.  The videos played fine, and the sound bars indicated that audio was playing, but there was no sound.  The clips I imported played fine in Windows Media Player.  I did everything suggested on the forums, but to no avail.  Then I thought of something no one else had suggested, and it worked!
I ordered my Rain Stratus computer already set up with Premiere CS6 installed.  When I opened a new project, it by default chose Black Magic Design presets, since that is the video card I have.  Being a newbie, I just went with that.  But since the video I was importing was not captured by my Black Magic video card, it was the wrong choice.  It took awhile to figure out, but I finally realized I needed to choose Digital SLR as the sequence preset when I created a new project.  Then the audio worked!
One more thing I had to do, though, before it worked: in PremierePro, go to Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware.  I had to change the hardware from Black Magic Audio to Premiere Pro WDM Sound, click ASIO settings, choose my speakers, and then check the box marked "device 32-bit playback" (even thought I have a 64-bit computer.)
I hope that helps someone else from going through the same frustration.

  • Premiere CC 2014 Won't Play

Premiere won't play back video. The "Play" button stays engaged revealing the "Stop Button" underneath, but the Timecode doesn't scroll and the Play Head never moves.
    Specs:
    10.9.5
    3.69 i7
    32GB Ram

One of the first things to try (as it's quick & simple and sometimes fixes the problem) is to quit PrPro, then while holding down opt & shift (I think ... might be alt-shift) start up PrPro again. This forces PrPro to start up WITHOUT referencing the current "preferences" file, and if it starts & work right, you had a corrupt pref's file. And you're good to go. Past that ... check back in. And actually,  there have been other threads with this problem, but if you don't search by the EXACT words used in the title or any category tags the OP of the other thread used, this search will NOT look around creatively.
Some people go out & in a different tab of their browser use Google to search for the problem. To find an answer here ...

  • Premiere Pro CS4 Won't Play Anything Without Stopping

I have captured HDV and DV footage and Premiere won't play anything. Not in the Source monitor, not in the Timeline/Program Monitor. It won't even play a color matte or bars and tone. It will play for less than a second, stop and the marker will go back to the original starting point.
I am running PPro on a Macbook Core 2 Duo and the footage is fine. I can play it outside of Premiere in other programs but I cannot figure anything out inside of Premiere. Its fully updated and everything.
    Can anyone help me?

    Hi Rod,
After some hardcore Googling and some nifty search tricks, I found I wasn't the only one. I found this thread where people were having the exact same problem:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2575099
I did what someone else said where I enabled the root user, logged into that account, loaded Premiere and changed the Audio Hardware to System Default. I then went back to my user account and loaded the project file I was working in. Everything works great now. Thank god.

  • PP CS5 won't play

I've been happily using PP CS5 since the week after release.
Suddenly, premiere won't play anything.  When I hit the play button or space bar, the button toggles to pause but premiere just sits there.  This is in both the source clip window and preview window.
There were no hardware/software changes.  I was working fine, quit to work on something else, restarted about 30 minutes later and no joy.
I've tried the solutions outlined in the support article, including deleting the plist file and logging in as root.  Deleting the plist file had no effect.  When logged in as root, premiere works fine but when I return to my user account nothing's changed.
I also un/reinstalled and upgraded to 5.0.2, again with no change.
    Running 10.6.5, Mac Pro 2x2.8Quad, 10GB.
Any suggestions of something else to try?
    Cliff

I'm running into exactly the same problem. I'm on a 2007 MacPro w/13GB RAM running 10.6.5.
On Tuesday I was editing video and all of the sudden, the digital audio out stopped working. I tried all kinds of audio setup manipulations and nothing worked until I abandoned my project and went back to FinalCut Pro. Then, the digital audio starts working so I though I'd try Premiere Pro again.
Now, everytime I try to play a clip in PP, and it doesn't matter whether it is an old project or new, Canon h.264 video or AVCHD video or ProRes, it will either not play at all or only play one second of video.
I've tried removing /Library/Preferences/com.apple.audio.AggregateDevices.plist, trashing, restarting and trying again -- no luck. I've also tried fixing permissions and resetting the PRAM. I can definately write to the AggregateDevices.plist because I can see it being updated as I start and quit PP.
I get the impression that this has something to do with the audio system, but not sure what.
    Thanks,
    Cameron

  • Premiere doesn't play at all

What's happened, hitting spacebar or the play button, premiere won't play. Never had problems before.

  • Premiere Pro won't play media intermittently in Yosemite

    Hello all,
I have a Premiere Pro CC 2014 (2014.1 Release, the latest one) installed on Yosemite 10.10.
It's running on a  Macbook Pro (Early 2011 model) with 16gb of RAM, 512GB SSD, 1TB HDD, AMD Radeon 6750 Card with 1GB of RAM.
On Mavericks 10.9.5 it all ran perfectly.
On Yosemite I have intermittent problem with media playing.
After a restart if I open Premiere Pro and open any of my projects it will say media loaded, however it won't play it. If you hit play nothing happens. The videos won't show either in source window or timeline. Quitting the program results in a hang. I have to force quit the application and than I get an error Premiere Pro encountered a serious error. Upon second program open, the media will work fine and everything will work fine. That's until I turn off the computer or restart it and than it's over again. I have to open the program, force quit it and only than it will work.
I cleared Premiere's preferences, caches, moved media to a different drive, reinstalled Premiere Pro and even clean installed the operating system. The problem persists.
What's interesting is that if I open Premiere after a restart and start a NEW project, import the media and start editing, it will work. When I save it and quit and than open the program again it will show the same problem and I'll have to force quit it after which it will work again.
The only plugin I have is Neat Video 3.6.
This problem is really annoying and I hope someone can help me solve it out.
    All best,
    Goran

    Hi CopyCatFilms,
Shouldn't Adobe be the one updating to account for video card driver changes?  I thought that was the benefit of paying monthly?
We test all GPUs with current drivers, but new drivers can come out faster than releases of Premiere Pro. Also, we can't update Premiere Pro every time there is a driver update. That would be pretty difficult to pull off. Sorry.
If not, please advise on which NVIDIA graphics driver will actually work with PrPro. Because this is NOT working. Currently running: CUDA Driver Version: 6.5.45
Typically, we recommend that you install the latest drivers for your GPU. It sounds like you have done so. Most people are having best success with these drivers on systems running OS X 10.10.2. Are you updated to that version?
It renders out complete videos with weird pixel bugs across them.
When did it start behaving this way? After installing the new drivers? After updating OS X? After updating a Premiere Pro project from Premiere Pro CC 2014.1 (8.1) to Premiere Pro CC 2014.2 (8.2)? We need more info to assist you: FAQ: What information should I provide when asking a question on this forum?
Not to mention, it crashes 10 times a day...running back to FCPX.
If you're crashing that many times per day, you should troubleshoot your system with our agents. Contact them M-F 7AM-7PM PST. Ask for the "video queue." You can either chat or get a phone call going: Contact Customer Care
The other possibility is that by updating OS X, you may have changed the read write permissions of crucial Adobe folders. See this article for an explanation and a potential fix:
Premiere Pro CC, CC 2014, or 2014.1 freezing on startup or crashing while working (Mac OS X 10.9, and later)
I also recommend the following steps for Mac users having trouble crashing on Mavericks or Yosemite:
Sign out from Creative Cloud, restart Premiere Pro, then sign in
    Update any GPU drivers
    Trash preferences
    Delete media cache
    Delete preview files
    Remove plug-ins
If you have AMD GPUs, make sure CUDA is not installed
    Repair permissions
In Sequence Settings > Video Previews, change the codec to one that matches your footage
    Disconnect any third party hardware
If you have a CUDA GPU, ensure that the Mercury Playback Engine is set to CUDA, not OpenCL
    Disable App Nap
    Reboot
Let us know if any of these steps worked for you.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Premiere Elements 4 audio won't play on mp4 files, codecs missing/unavailable on .mov files

I dowlnloaded Premiere Elements 4, and when I import mp4 files, the video plays but the audio will not. I've also tried to import .mov files, and an error message pops up that says "Codec missing or unavailable." I downloaded the latest version of Quicktime, but that didn't change anything. The files will play back on the video camera, but I"m having trouble with them on my computer. The audio on the mp4 files plays in Quicktime, but not the video, and vice versa when I import them into Elements. Any suggestions?

Does Quicktime Pro also edit .mov files on a PC?

Premiere Elements 4 pretty much works with tape-based digital video. That would be video from a miniDV or HDV tape-based camcorder. It doesn't handle other formats very well.
If you plan to edit MP4s, you definitely want to upgrade to a more current version of the program. If you can't install a current version of the program, you may need to address issues on your computer (such as an outdated operating system or underpowered hardware configuration).
Short of that, you could buy Quicktime Pro from Apple for $29. It will edit MP4s, even on a PC platform.

  • Premiere Pro CC 2014 won't play anything.

Today I launched up a brand new install of Premiere Pro CC 2014 (it's a trial) on a brand new iMac (3.5 GHz intel Core i7, 32 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB) and my project that was working fine yesterday on my MacBook Air will not play anything. The footage is all DSLR H.264. My sequences won't play, my clips won't play, my merged clips won't play, my multi cam sequences won't play. You hit play and the play button changes to a stop button, but nothing happens. I tried logging in as root but it won't play there either. All the footage is sitting on an external 4TB Lacie thunderbolt drive.
    Any thoughts??

  • Premiere Pro CS6 won't play imported files even after changing format, etc?

    Camera: Canon Legria HFM41
    Video file format: MTS (1920 x 1080)
For the past few days I've been trying to understand why my video files won't play in Premiere, I'll import them, and when I press play the audio will work, but the video will play smoothly for only a few seconds then stop, skipping frames/slowing the speed of the video - I've read a lot of these forums on similar issues, then I tried converting the format to avi/mp4 and they still won't play smoothly when importing to Premiere Pro.. Does anyone know what I may be doing wrong/how to solve this.. Thank you!

  • Premiere Pro and Soundbooth won't play video/audio for more than a second.

Ok, so my issue is that Soundbooth won't play audio for more than a second. It plays a quick bit then stops. Premiere Pro also does the same with video, it plays a quick bit then stops. I don't know if it is connected or not but when I try to change the audio output in Soundbooth to System Default I get this error:
I set the permissions to premiere and soundbooth to full but it didn't work. I've tried UnInstalling and ReInstalling but that didn't fix the issues either. All of the other programs seem to work. Any help would be much appreciated!!

    Here is the fix.
    1. Open Finder and navigate to /YOUR_HD/Library/Preferences
    2. Rename or move to the Trash the file:   com.apple.audio.AggregateDevices.plist
    3. Relaunch The Program

  • Help!! AVI audio won't play - Premiere Pro v.7

    Hi!
I captured footage from my DV camera into Windows Movie Maker in the form of a DV-avi. (I use WMM because Premiere crashes when I try to capture DV video). And when I import the AVI into Premiere Pro v.7 the audio won't play in the project window. However, when I scrub the slider back and forth the audio does play (kind of).
I have never had this problem before. I've captured video many times and this never happened.
I tried re-capturing it 6 times, but still the audio doesn't play (except when I scrub).
Is there an option I clicked accidentally?
Any help would be really great.
    Thanks a lot!

You might Google for a converter
You might also use the free http://www.headbands.com/gspot to find out the file details, and report back so someone may be able to help
I installed that program. Very helpful and interesting. Thanks for the link.
I assumed, like you, that I had simply captured the AVI files as Type 1. But I guess they are Type 2, after all.
I don't know if this helps, but the AVIs play just fine in Quicktime, Windows Media Player, WMM and Winamp.

  • Specific set of XDCam EX720p50 footage won't play in Premiere (or After Effects)

    Hi There
I've been given a media drive full of past projects and media by a client, which contains (among other things) .mov files which Quicktime Player Movie Inspector tells me are XDCam EX720p50 35Mb/s VBR 1280x720, 16 bit integer (little-endian), Stereo 48Khz.  The sound plays fine, but the video shows only a red screen with occasional digital-dropout-like square flicking across the screen.
This PC system is newly installed and running OK, and footage of the same type (given the same credentials by Quicktime Player) from a different client plays fine in Premiere
(Quicktime player will open both sets of files and give you the info, but sends you to the extra-codec page)
So my conclusion is there's a problem with the set of files that won't play (rather than the system)
    And my question is....
WHAT CAN I DO?  Can anyone give me some advice on how I might get these files working?  They have been edited before in a previous version of Premiere by another editor, without issue so they should work...
    All help appreciated
    Thanks

    (Premiere CS5.5, Win 7 64bit, core i7 2600K at 4.8Ghz, 16Gb RAM, GeFore GTX 570)

I have a similar problem. A friend sent me the .mov files he recordedin the XDCAM 16x9 1920x1080 . I can't import them into my Win7 Premiere Pro. Codec Missing or unavailable. Lots of people seem to have the same proble id using a PC - particularly when they have been sent the .mov files on a hard drive. The folder
I can play the videos using VLC but not on WindowsMedia or DivX (sound only) or with QuickTime ( won't load - needs new software from Adobe plugins)
If this is a codec problem why can VLC play it?
I have checked out the files with MediaInfo and they are slightly different to the above. Are there ary rules to determing the value of the parameter for the bat file for my mov file. I think this looks like stereo but you will recognise the information you would need. I tried the current bat but that has another audio file map.

  • Premiere pro/audition bug? Mixdown file won't play in sequence

    Howdy.
Never had this happen before, so I thought I'd ask you academic types what's going on.
I created a sequence in PP that contained multiple audio (wav)/video files. I exported the audio to Audition, balanced the amplification, declicked, popped, etc. Created a mixdown of the files and exported (wav). I imported the mixdown to PP and placed it into the sequence (I've done this thousands of times before). Unfortunately, there were no waveforms on the file and no audio can be heard.
However, if I open the same file in the source monitor the waveforms are there and the file plays as it should. I can also open and play the wav file in media play, for example, and everything appears to be fine.
Any ideas on why it won't play in the program monitor/timeline/sequence?
    Thanks

Oh well, not a big deal. I was able to use the clip by creating a new sequence, dragging from source monitor to new sequence, then copy/paste from the new sequence to the sequence I needed.

  • Please help, video won't play in Premiere but audio will.

I have a video that was shot with a still camera that allows for short videos.  The video is 30fps, 640x480 44100Khz audio.
When I play it in Windows Media Player it plays fine.  If I import it in Adobe After Effect it play fine, but when I import it into Premiere, the audio plays fine, but the video plays like there are only 2-3 frames and that's it.  the clip is the correct length, visually.  Can anyone help?  All other clips imported fromvideo cameras work fine.
    Thanks,
    Roberto Cerini

Your clip probably uses the MJPEG codec.
