Premiere won't recognize my camera (Can't activate recorder. Try resetting camera.)

Ok I have a very perplexing situation.  I have been doing video editing for years but this is a new one for me.  I just got a new Windows 7 PC (64 bit) I7-8GB RAM Lenovo system.  I just installed Premiere CS5.5 on it and installed a new SIIG firewire card.  I have a Sony Mini-DV camercorder that works great and have been exporting with firewire on my previous 3 systems with no problem (last system was Win 7 64bit as well).  On this system I attach the camera via firewire cable and Windows instantly recognizes the camera and the general dialog box comes up asking me if I would like to capture video with Adobe Premiere, Cyberlink PowerDirector, or Windows Live Photo Gallery.   Both PowerDirector and Windows Photo Gallery I can open and capture video with no problems. However if I open Premiere in anyway (in DV mode) and bring up the capture window while the camera is on I get the message:  "Can't activate recorder.  Try resetting camera."   If I switch the camera off while the capture window is up it then switches to the message "Capture device offline".
So it seems the firewire card, camera are fine, but giving Premiere fits for some reason.   Side notes, I also have a Sony FX-1 HD camera which I can connect with the same firewire cable and inside Premiere and it will capture video but will not display it while capturing (I read this is common with High Def video though).   I also have disabled the Windows firewall as I read about in other threads.  I have tried 2 other firewire cards with the same exact results.  The mini-DV camera I'm trying to get Premiere to capture with is a Sony DCR-PC9 and I have used it in my last 3 systems all running Windows and Premiere. This is really frustating.
Any tips and or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you, Kirk

  • CS4 won't recognize DV camera for capture

I installed CS4 Master Collection and all works well except for Premiere. It won't capture. The error is " Can't activate controller. Try re-setting Camera" Windows New Found Hardware recognizes it and says it's ready to use. I click "No Action" or "Edit using Premiere" still does not work. In device control and capture I have adjusted the setting from generic to the brand names/models of both cameras I tried. It does say "Off Line" and when I turn the camera on, it gives me the error. I have not tried to update my video driver but I didn't think that would have anything to do with it. Any suggestions Please?

  • IMOVIE 6 won't recognize DV camera while IDVD is encoding or burning

I am in the process of encoding and burning a dvd in idvd 6. Given the length of this process, I want to also import some video into an imovie 6 project. However, while idvd is encoding, imovie won't recognize my camera.
I understand I can stop idvd, but then will I lose the encoding that has already occurred?
Will imove recognize the camera if I launch idvd after beginning the import into imovie?
Is there a software fix that will prevent idvd from monopolizing the firewire port when it is just encoding video from an imovie project?
This is a very irritating conflict given the time encoding takes in idvd.
    Thanks,

As Sue suggests, it's not surprising that iDVD doesn't want you to access the camera with iMovie. It's not unusual for applications that perform FireWire-intensive functions—as both iDVD and iMovie do—to want to control the device. If iDVD can't control the camera, it may not be able to perform a task you want it to do. (Remember, iDVD offers several camcorder-dependent functions, including OneStep DVDs.)
While it may be a bit treacherous, you CAN go behind iDVD's back to get it done. The trick is to grab control of the camera before iDVD does. So Quit iDVD after you create, then save the iDVD project, then grab control of the camera with an iMovie HD project, THEN re-open the iDVD project and start encoding. (I tested exporting the iDVD project to a disk image, which is probably safer than burning a physical DVD. Use Disk Utility later to burn the disk image to a physical DVD.)
The iMovie video looked fine here, but your mileage may vary.

  • 10.8.5 won't recognize my camera for download

My computer won't recognize my camera for picture downloads.  Worked before with older Mac system.

Your Panasonic should work fine under normal circumstances.
Remove the firewire hub from the loop. It will be a trouble maker.
Formatting must be Mac OS Extended. To check it, go to the firewire icon on your Desktop and right click it then select Get Info.
If it's not Mac OS Extended, use the disc utility to re-format, be aware that this will erase all files so BACKUP any imortant files before proceding.
You will need a spare firewire port to plug in the camera. Some externals have two, if yours has two, try it, otherwise you will have to add the suggested card to add the additional port.
    Does the G4 have two?
The card arrangement gives you an additional BUS and is light years ahead of a firewire port for video editing.

  • Can't Activate Recorder. Try Resetting Camera.

This is usually a easy fix based on what I know on Premiere and in comparison to other peoples threads I've seen with the same problem. However, my problem doesn't seem to have the same symptoms from what i've seen.
As the title indicates, when I go to the capture panel I get the "Can't Activate Recorder. Try Resetting Camera".
Both Windows and Adobe can detect when the device turns on and Off, but for some reason, both cs6 and cs5.5 cant access the device for playback. The device is a Sony HVR-M25U.
It works, because before I started using my new rig, which was only a couple of weeks ago.
My Previous Machine picked it up in cs5.5 with no problem, it's a pretty decent machine too. I'm pretty very certain that it still can detect the device with no problems. Only problem is I can't use it until I get a new video card. Or I can remove the vid card from my current machine and put it back into the old one and capture the tape that way, but that is far more tedious and doing that every time a tape comes along would become annoying.
In the Device Control Panel, DV/HDV is selected and in the options, the Check Status Box is Listed as Online.
The Rig I have didn't come with a firewire port, so I bought a PCI 2.0 Firewire Card and installed it. Device Manager has it listed as working correctly.
What do you guys think the fault could be? I'm starting to think it's the firewire card, unless there are other ways to trouble shoot  that I am not aware of in Premiere in regards to device capture. I'm almost 100% sure it's not the device. The only other thing it could be is Adobe Pemiere Pro or the Firewire card I bought. Any suggestions?

  • CS3 Can't activate Recorder - additional solution

    Hi all,
I was having the standard Windows 7 64bit firewire capture problem outlined here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/869277. However, having followed those steps, I was still getting the "Can't Activate Recorder. Try Resetting Camera." error when trying to capture DV footage (DVCAM as it happens). I can capture HDV fine - and yes, I'm changing over the capture settings and the playback setting on the camera.
I had got to the point of being able to control the camera with the buttons at the bottom of the capture window, but had no display, and still had that error.
Happily, I have discovered an additional step which enables me to capture DV. You need to click the Edit button under Capture Settings (on the Settings tab), and in the window that pops up, click settings again. Then untick all the boxes (Preview Video on Desktop, Preview Audio on Desktop) for both During Preview and During Capture.
This should leave you with a black screen, but premiere will happily capture clips properly. You'll obviously need to log clips blind (without a display on the monitor), or capture whole tapes at a time, but it's still a valuable workaround.
So I just thought I'd post it up, seeing as I've seen some other poor souls on my forum travels who need this solution!
    My specs: Premiere CS3 (3.2.0). Windows 7 64bit Home Premium. AMD Athlon II X2 245 2.9Ghz. 8GB RAM. NVidia GTS 450. Camera - Sony Z1E.

    Judy,
When you are saying "HD" I think you mean "DV".  The HVR-V1U, has 3 record formats. "DV" and "DVCAM" are 480i "Standard Definition" video and "HDV" is 1080i "High Definition" video.  I had this same error when I switched over from editing in DV using CS4 to editing in HDV using CS5.  In most Sony mini DV tape based HDV cameras you need to turn the "iLink conversion" off in the camera to keep the camera from converting the HDV video to DV while the camera exports footage, otherwise your High Defiition footage comes out as Standard Definition footage.  I knew enough to do that.  The part that does not make sense to me and where I got lost is every time I open a new HDV project file in Premiere Pro CS5, my default capture setting always reverts back to "DV" and I have to go in to my capture settings and manually switch it to "HDV" every time I create a new project which is annoying.  It would seem to me that either there would be no option for "DV" capture in an HDV project file, or at least the default capture setting in an HDV project would be "HDV".  If I am missing some reason why you would want to capture DV footage in an HDV project file, can someone please enlighten me???
    Thanks. Gary

  • It won't recognize my camera

Hi. i'm a new mac user. i have nikon coolpix p6000 camera but my macbook won't recognize it.
i bought a card reader and it won't recognize it too. iphoto and image capture are useless in this matter.
by the way, when i look at the usb setting the camera name is actually there.
    Any ideas?

the card reader didn't work at all. but i tried it on a pc and it worked fine.
So you tried the same card in the card reader on a PC and it worked?
Could you view the pics when inserted into the PC?
If so, this tells me that you may have a problem the USB port on your Mac or the card is formatted to something that the Mac does not want to read, unlikely though.
Try a different USB port and make sure that you can view the pics on the camera itself.
Try resetting the SMC and see if that helps ya...

  • X205-sli1 64bit windows 7 won't recognize sony camera anymore and SLI mode flicker

I suspect this is more a windows 7 driver issue than a laptop issue, but does anyone have any ideas?
    background:
so, started with X205-sli1 default a month ago, since then it has gotten... 4gb ram, dual 500gb drives, and a T9500 CPU  (was running at 85c when idle before so as long as I was redoing the heatsink compond I upgraded the CPU, now runs at 40c when idle and faster).... anybody need a T7250 that works? pm me.
afterwards formated and put windows 7 64bit on it...   since then loaded all the drivers from toshiba website and everthing seems to work fine except it won't recognize the sony DSCW90 camera as a mass storage device like it did before.  The camera still works fine on another system running ubuntu, so I know the camera/cable are good.
second problem, even with the latest nvidia driver I get a nasty flicker when I enable the SLI mode, seems to be driver related....
    Thanks,
    Robert
p.s. the instructions lorddethstalker's signature are spot on for how to do the upgrade... thanks.

I long ago learned when I do an OS install I do a clean one with a complete wipe of the drive... read the instructions and seems about right...
I seem to recall something from way back with a similar problem when I first got the camera... I just don't remember the solution...
Clean installs were the way to go in my thinking as well. However, because of some glitches like this, I would mention a couple of things.
Probably the best way to go, would have been to first have done a full system Toshiba Recovery of your Vista 32 OS, drivers, etc, to your system's factory default out-of-the-box setup. Nice and clean no messy software/hardware updates/installs to mess it up. Then, after that to have done an in place upgrade to Windows 7 32bit. I think you would have had the least amount of trouble from everything I've learned on this forum, and from my own personal experience.
Next, while I fully understand the hyped benefits of the Windows 7 64bit version, the reality can be somewhat different. First, though it has a 64bit capability, your system was originally designed as a 32bit system, supplied with the appropriate 32 bit OS, and as such, it can only take a maximum of 4GB or RAM. Despite your percieved benefit of seeing/using the full 4GB of RAM, this is probably, at the very least, un-done by the fact that your old 32bit software actually runs faster on Windows 7 32bit. If your system could handle more than 4GB of RAM, and especially if you were willing to invest in new 64bit software, it would have been worthwhile to install Windows 7 64bit. Otherwise, I sincerely doubt that it was.
The main chipset and its drivers are what handles the USB ports. If you did (re)install those, from the links I gave you before, there's not much else you can do there. While it is not the same problem you are experiencing, the only other suggestions I have is to follow the instructions in Method 3 of this article:
USB port may stop working after you remove or insert a USB device
Did you ever try the system reset I mentioned before?
    Good luck.

  • Final cut won't recognize my camera

Hello. My Final Cut HD 3.0 won't recognize my brand new Sony 1080i HDV camera. I realize my final cut software probably pre-dates the camera. How can I fix it so I can capture video from this camera? I'm sure there's an answer buried someplace right before my eyes-- but I don't see it. Thanks.

  • Computer won't recognize iPhone camera

I used to have an original iPhone and I used to be able to import my camera roll. It randomly stopped working after a couple of months. I now have a 3GS and it still won't work. I have a Dell Inspiron running Vista. iTunes will still recognize my phone, but my computer won't recognize my phone or the camera. Any ideas about what happened or how I can import pictures again?

In my case, the computer stopped showing images that were on the iphone and only showed blank squares.
You might try this. Open the Image Capture application on your Mac. Open the menu item, Devices > Browse Devices.... If there is a Local Device called Digital Camera rather than the name of your iPhone, see if there is a Connected box that is not checked. Check it and you may find that the device will change to the name of your iPhone and things may begin to work.
If it is checked, you might try unchecking and then rechecking the box.
If your iPhone doesn't show up in the Local Device list, this might point toward the problem. Call iPhone support.

  • Tried to tether my Nikon D3200, but it won't recognize my camera

Does anyone have a clue as to how I can get the software to recognize this camera?

You can't. At this time the D3200 is not supported for tethered shooting. Nikon has software that may support the camera, and you could save your images to a watched folder that Lightroom uses.
Update: Nikon's software is called Camera Control Pro 2. I just checked it for a list of supported cameras and the D3200 isn't included in that list.

  • Brand new 20" iMac won't recognize Ethernet cable - can't get online

I just got my iMac and cannot get the ethernet cable to recgonize. I know it works b/c I'm using it this very moment to type this on my Powerbook. When I plug it into the PB, I get the yellow, then the green once it connects. However, when I plug it into the iMac, I get nothing. I thought maybe I needed to configure Built-In Ethernet, but it won't let me select configure or connect. The assistant won't recognize it either. I posted in the Tiger forum mistakenly, but thought this forum would be more appropriate. This is what I posted (for more detail):
I just unboxed my new iMac and can't get on the internet (I'm on my powerbook). The problem is this; in Network, it says "The cable for Built-In Ethernet is not plugged in." Only, it is. Can't be the cable b/c that's the cable I'm connected with right now. So, I go through "assist me" and when I click on "Assistant" it takes me to the Intro page where I'm supposed to give a Location Name. I do this, calling it "home." The ver next screen, after clicking "continue" takes me to "How do you connect to the internet?" The problem here is that, of the 5 options, only one is selectable. Airport is the only one that can be selected?? "I use a telephone modem to dial my ISP" as well as "DSL Modem/Cable/Lan" are all greyed out..they cannot be selected. I use an ethernet cable. Why is this not able to be selected? It's very frustrating. I've turned off Airport and Bluetooth, yet I still cannot check any of these. I need to check "I use a cable modem to dial my ISP" but I can't b/c it won't allow me. Can anyone help me here? I can't use my brand new iMac and it's kind of a bummer. I thought these things were plug and play? Thank

Well I tried that and nothing. I'm completely stumped. I have no idea why this is happening. And it's weird b/c, everytime I'm jumping back on here, I'm just unhooking the ethernet cable from the iMac and plugging it into my PB. And, nearly immediately, i'm up and running, connected with the PB. How can it work on the PB and not on the iMac? And why would those options be grayed out on the iMac? It's like it just refuses to let me check them and/or configure. That is very weird.

  • Software won't recognize SX50 camera

I installed the software, and uninstalled and reinstalled but the software still does not recognize my camera.  I know my computer does because it shows up in image capture.  Help!

Hello -- I had the same problem and just about 2 minutes ago, received the following info from support.  I was told that they are going to release an update making the software compatible with Mavericks and that it was to come out sometime around the end of November.  Because I need to make a plan around it, I wrote back for a closer approximation, since we are now into December.  Here is what I got in the email from Support:
Thank you for contacting Canon product support regarding software for your PowerShot SX50 HS camera.
Canon is conducting compatibility tests for the current versions of Canon digital imaging software with the shipping versions of the new Mac operating system.  Results will be posted soon at www.powershot.com.  For now, Canon is not claiming compatibility with this version of Mac OS.
Mac OS X 10.1 and newer come with Image Capture drivers that support most of Canon's digital cameras with USB interfaces.  When a compatible camera is connected to a compatible Mac computer running OS X 10.1 and newer, the computer detects the camera and automatically launches Image Capture.  This Apple program allows JPEG images in the camera to be downloaded to the Macintosh.  Try doing the following to download the images:
    1.  Click on your hard drive.
    2.  Open your APPLICATIONS folder.
    3.  Open the program that says IMAGE CAPTURE.
    4.  With Image Capture still open, click on the IMAGE CAPTURE menu, found on the top left corner of your screen, next to the Apple icon.
    5.  Select the option that reads PREFERENCES.
    6.  The dialogue box that appears should say something like "When camera connected open."  From the pull down menu select IMAGE CAPTURE and then close the window.
The next time you connect the camera to the USB and power it on in replay mode, Image Capture should come up and download picture files on the camera.
I haven't tried this yet.  Just thought I'd post this info while I had the time.  I hope it helps you.

  • Premiere won't recognize my usb mic even though my mac recognizes it

I am trying to do a voice over, but when I attach my usb mic, premiere will not recognize it as an input even though I selected it in the sound settings on my mac. When I did my first voice over, the mic was recognized, but now it is a no go.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.
    Kevin

What I have found is that you have to make the audio input change at the computer system level first, then start PPro and make the changes in the Audio Hardware section. So on the Mac, Sys Preferences - Sound -Input - choose your mic. Then start up PPro - Preferences - Audio Hardware - Choose System Default Settings (usually the first one on the drop down list). Then go through arming the track. You should see VU input at that point.
PPro does not dynamically check any changes in the sound settings once it is launched. Quit PPro, set up the mic, relaunch and set inputs. This works consistently for me and my classroom.
