PremierePro PC 8.2.0 (65) replace footage causes error "The importer reported a generic error"

Hi there
I tried everything multiple PC's and windows installs, goggled every support site available for answers to no avail so far.
The following is tested on a brand new and untampered win8 install (all win8 updates included)
Trail and fully updated versions of Premier Pro 8.2.0 (65) and AE 13.2.0.49 are the only two programs installed on to the PC.
The problem.
Create a new project in Premiere Pro
I make a single sequence
Add a single Black video item to the sequence
Now pick the black video item in the Premiere project Bin area, right click it and choose  "Replace footage"
Then the browser opens and I pick a After effect project file (.aep) that I prepared earlier.(the most simple AE project file I can make, consisting of a single Comp with a shape drawing in it)
When I click the Select button to confirm my choice of .aep file a window immediately opens that says "The importer reported a generic error".
Next I am back in the PP bin and the black video item has turned "off line".
This option / featured executed in the 100% similar way works as expected without errors in an old CC6 setup.
Please help as the this is an very useful feature that needs to be fixed/work.
Thank you

No key frames what so ever.
The AE project I refer to, only involves a standard hdtv 720p comp with a text element or a simple shape drawn. (Actually I am pretty certain that an empty comp will yield the same result)
The problem is consistent no matter if it's the most simple AE project I can possible make or a complexed project with many comps in it.
Personally, I am pretty sure the potential bug is isolated in PP and has nothing to do with AE. The reason why I believe so, is that when I try to pick large AE project the error message pops up much quicker than the time it takes to loads and analyze the AE .aep file.
Please before you go, can you tell me wether or not you get the same result when doing a simple test as I described in a somewhat similar set up.
And please pass the information on to the developer team. (I have already written a bug report) but I am desperate for a quick fix to this issue, so any help bringing their attention to the problem is much appreciated.
Thank you and enjoy the holidays

  • Dynamic Link/ Replace with After Effects Composition between Premiere Pro CC to After Effects CC won't work. Says "importer reported a generic error"

Trying to use the "Replace with After Effects Composition" to use Warp Stabilizer on a clip and transfer it back into Premiere Pro CC. The action is not  "grayed out" it allows me to click it and it opens up After Effects, then asks to open a new composition, but it doesn't open up the clip for me to work on it.
Also is the Dynamic Link and Replace with After Effects Composition the same thing?
Ive watched several tutorials and read threads but I still don't understand who to fix my problem.
I have both CC versions of PP and AE, if that makes any difference.

You have not provided any system information, no details about your sequence settings, your footage and whatnot. Nobody can even guess what may be going on.

  • Premiere reporting a generic error at AE clip replace

    Hi guys
I am currently work a project with a lot of greenscreen work.
I do all my keying in AE with keylight and mattes.
The editing is done in premiere with my "raw" footage from Sony NEX VG20 cameras as a kind of proxy footage (MTS files).
When the edit and keying is done, I right click the footage in the project field, and select replace footage. I now select the AE file containing the keying settings.
This is where the problem occurs. normally a get a dialogue box asking what comp i want to use, but now I just get the "The importer reported a generic error" error message.
What can I do, it was working before, and now suddenly it won’t work at all, not even in a new Premiere file importing a AE with just a comp.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Jim
    Thanks for the answer.
If I replace the clips in the sequence/timeline with "Replace clip with..." it starts from frame 0 in every clip, and ignores my editing.
Can I replace a clip in the bin with another "clip/comp" from the same project/bin.?
The "Replace clip with..." is grayed out, and if I select "replace clip" I need to select a file?

  • Partial footage/black screen when replacing footage in PPro CS5

Let's see if I can get all the relevant info down here.
Started off with a project in PPro CS5; using two source files (one an MP4 from a Flip cam - not the footage I am having an issue with) the other a direct-stream feed from a 3D application, converted to Lagarith. Both were dragged into the timeline and manually synced so the footage matches up - the MP4 is overlayed over the direct-stream in the corner of the frame, scaled down.
I have been using the razor tool to cut both sequences into short clips at the same time in the timeline to maintain identical in/out points. The Lagarith-encoded stream is lower resolution than I would prefer, so due to some other additional factors I have taken the stream and scaled it up from the original 640x360 to 1280x720 using a neat app called "Video Enchancer".
Now, here comes the issue; I have been editing with the 360p footage, and would now like to replace it with the 720p footage (basically proxy editing). "Replace Footage" function to the rescue, right? Apparently wrong.
Once I replace the footage, most of the timeline gets diagonal stripes across the cut clips, as well as a black screen in the program monitor for preview - indicating that the footage is still missing (though no red "media offline" image). Oddly enough, of the three 360p original files I used to edit with, the first replaced perfectly fine, the second replaced fine up until a certain point, and the third didn't work at all.
The oddest thing of all, however, is that I can view the replaced footage in the source monitor without any issues, and PPro reports no issues with either the video or the audio stream (audio is uncompressed PCM WAV). I can even drag the replaced footage (now 720p) into the timeline, and watch it in the program monitor.
The scaled-up 720p footage is of the exact same length as the original 360p footage; down to the frame count. Both are using Lagarith - yet for some reason, replacing the 360p footage with my scaled 720p footage doesn't seem to work correctly. Even selecting "reveal in project" over one of the cut clips that shows no video/audio points me to the correct source file!
    What's going on here?
If there is any additional info you would need or like, feel free to ask and I'll provide it. Sorry for the long post.

I'm editing my reply, and going to post a new thread, as I figured out at least what the issue is: PPro is not detecting the correct duration of my footage.

I'm trying to import Hi8 into FCPX via a Canon GL2.  Although the footage appears in the import window, it says camera not controllable.  The manual import buttons activate, but the footage is not actually importing.  Any ideas?  Thanks so much.

    What Tom said.
Or you may be able to import using a different program - try with Quicktime Player, "New Movie Recording". If the camera appears as an option, it should work.

  • Replace footage will crash Premiere Pro CS6

    Hi,
I have a serious problem with Premiere Pro CS6 when I want to replace footage in the project. I need to replace .R3D files to ProRes files that I encoded via MediaEncoder.
When I replace the clip (.R3D to ProRes) in project browser, Premiere crashes every time announcing:
"Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Pro to shut down..."
When reopening the project (the recovery project Premiere Pro tried to save while crashing), the name of the file is still the same, but the content of the file has changed to the ProRes clip (they are different in resolution). When I replace the clip again, the name of the clip also changes and does not crash - however the clip was already changed even the name wasn't.
If I then replace another clip (.R3D to ProRes), Premiere will crash again. This happens every time I try to replace a new clip (.R3D to ProRes).
If I replace the other way around (ProRes to .R3D), Premiere will not crash.
Please help. This is very annoying problem, and I need this resolved as soon as possible!
    Thanks!
    (MacPro, OSX 10.7.5, PremierePro CS6)

    Hi again,
nobody has an idea why this happens?
Well, I made further experiments, sent crash reports to Adobe, no reply.
The problem is still: when trying to replace footage (.R3D => AppleProRes), PremierePro crashes every time.
The following announcement pops out (to click OK):
    Adobe Premiere Pro
Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Pro to shut down. We will attempt to save your current project.
Earlier PremierePro crashed and had to force-quit. Now I just have to quit it - it stays on but does not work and makes a pop-up (to click Continue):
Premiere Pro has encountered an error.
    [/Volumes/BuildDisk/builds/slightlybuilt/PremierePro/UIFramework/Make/Mac/../../Src/Worksp ace.cpp-209]
Again, if trying to replace footage the other way around (AppleProRes => .R3D), PremierePro does not crash.
    Please, help soon! Thanks.

  • Replacing footage with composition

Hi there, I'm sure there's a way to do this, but it's eluding me.
I have a layer in my project which is used in multiple places in multiple comps.
I also have a composition which uses other layers to accomplish a similar effect.
I would like to replace every instance of the layer in every comp with the composition.
Replacing one layer with another layer is relatively straightforward. But I can't figure out how to replace a layer with a composition, aside from tracking every instance down and option-dragging it. There's got to be a simpler way, right?
    Thanks!

No not, really. This would only work the other way around by using "Replace usage" on the render queue to substitute comps with footage. Perhaps some script wizard has tackled this, but off the top of my head I'm not aware that such a script is publicly available. Maybe check AEnhancers...

  • Batch Replace Footage Option? CS6

    HEY!
I submitted a feature request and wanted to see if anyone else had some interest in this option. I use DUALEYES to sync .WAV files with my DSLR footage so I have high quality audio. When I have the new files, I then replace the original footage that is already imported to the Premiere Pro CS6 project. Without this option, to the best of my knowledge, you have to right click each file and choose replace. Then choose the new file that is labeled MVI_0889_CLEAN.MOV to replace the file MVI_0889.MOV ( The original with a basic scratch audio track. ) This works out great except for the fact I have to do it roughly 300 times for the footage I have imported. Next time I can do this all before starting the project, but this time, it would help out a lot to be able to batch replace.
Does anyone have a better way of doing this or a way to make this process easier?
It would be really nice if Premier Pro CS6 could do this processing of syncing audio and video files with clean separately recorder audio files. Dual Eyes saved me so much time, it's odd that Premiere doesn't have this built in. It would help out so much.
    Thanks!
    - Rob

    ExactImage,
That's a great idea and would work but I would like to have the new file names when imported. I know it isn't a big deal, but it would help me organize which footage is the new synced audio clips and which is the original.
My original clips with scratch audio is labeled MVI_2345.MOV
My new clips that have been created with DualEyes are labeled MVI_2345_CLEAN.MOV
If I go offline and then reconnect the media, I believe all of the clip names will be the same. I do feed my external audio into the 60D via a cable and the H4N audio recorder, so my original clips audio isn't all that bad. I just don't want it to slip through the cracks instead of having the clean HQ .WAV file synced clips in the timeline. That's where the _CLEAN label would help out if a batch replace footage option with a check box that says "Rename clip names to file names" would be excellent. FCP had something similar to this which worked great. You would right click on a clip and choose rename, then you had the option to rename the file to the clip name or the clip name to the file name. It helped out greatly when trying to keep a huge project organized. If we can add this feature to a new batch replace footage option, that would be AMAZING!
I switched from FCP 7 to Premiere Pro CS6, and what an excellent decision that was. Thank you ADOBE!

  • AE replaced footage doesn't pre-render properly

Currently I'm working on a project that has various visual effects which I've composited in After Effects. I've done this, after editing the project in Premiere CS5.5, by selecting "Replace footage with After Effects composition" in the context-menu of the selected clip.
Now I've completed the effects in AE and by the power of the amazing Dynamic-Link I can see the effects in Premiere! But there's a slight problem, the parts of footage that were edited in AE have a yellow bar above them, unless an other clip overlaps with it (in that case it's green).
So my question is: How do I pre-render these clips properly so I can preview them in real-time?

The yellow bar is normal. See http://forums.adobe.com/thread/773101
No need to render a yellow bar, that plays in real time.

  • After Effects "Import", "Replace footage" and similar commands not working

From today my "Import" and "Replace footage" commands are no longer working properly. I can perform one of these commands once and then they no longer work until I restart AE. Both the menu items and the contextual menu in the project window behave the same. It is hugely frustrating.
I started having the problem after opening a project from a colleague who has been experiencing the same thing.
I am working on a mid 2014 Macbook Pro with 16GB of RAM with Os X Yosemite 10.10.2. My AE is on CC 2014 and is fully up to date.
    Any ideas?

I have the same problem with exact the same setup. Also in Photoshop i can`t open files.
I also reinstalled everything and i get the same problems again.

  • Replacing footage with image sequence

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew how to replace footage with an image sequence. It seems like when I choose replace footage and navigate to my image sequence there is nothing I am able to check off for image sequence. So basically if I have an image sequence in my timeline, I can only replace it with a movie which defeats the purpose of using an image sequence. Thanks in advance!

You need to have a single directory filled with one or more supported still images which are named with a number a the end for the 'Image Sequence' checkbox to be un-grayed out in the 'Import', 'Replace Footage' or 'Locate Files' dialog. From the screenshot above, it looks like you've met all those criteria and that the checkbox is not even there, as opposed to being present but dim. On windows 8 (which it looks like you're on) that checkbox would be in between the 'File Name' label and the bottom of the file list area. The fact that you're not there makes me think your on an older version before we had all the relevant features. I'd have to check to remember just when that would have been, but I know that as of CS6 the 'Image Sequence' dialog was definitely there for the Locate Files and Import dialogs, so it's reasonable that it was an option in the replace footage dialog too. It may be something system specific which is not allowing all the UI to draw in correctly when using OS dialogs. In that case, Kevin's suggestion might still be viable since the Link & Locate workflow uses its own Premiere UI instead of OS dialogs.

  • How to Replace Footage with an AVCHD .MTS?

I have a sequence edited together from what I thought was a master H264 M4V.  I now find out that the real master is AVCHD. So how can I replace my M4V footage with an MTS?
If I do a Replace Footage, I can see multiple AVCHD MTS Streams and the usual mess of folders inside a BDMV folder, but I seem to only be able to import via Media Browser. Replace Footage doesn't work with files already in Premiere, right?
I've only worked with AVCHD files once before, so I'm a little lost.

Jim,  I'm sure we've had this discussion before..... but it's not the fault of either the camera makers OR Mac users    Since I'm now using both Mac and Windows 7 equally, I really have no axe to grind against either company.
This is entriely the fault of Microsoft who were unwilling to license NTFS to other companies, including Apple, Linux etc, added to the fact that NTFS is not suitable for lower powered devices with small amounts of embedded RAM.  NTFS is simply too complicated for them to handle using small microcontrollers, so hoping for NTFS on cameras is folly in my mind.  It's just not going to happen.
Apple, like Linux also have a file system that can handle larger files, larger even than NTFS.  The Linux file system is also open source and royalty free, so could be used free of charge by lots of camera manufacurors if they wanted to (excpet it's also a lot more complicated than FAT32), but Microsoft choose not to support it (i.e. you couldn't read the cards on Windows), probably to try block Linux getting an even stronger hold on their server market than it has already.
The fact is that FAT32 was simple to implement for small memory devices of years gone by and nothing has come along to replace it that was (a) easy on the CPU / RAM and (b) royalty free.
There's no reason they couldn't implement a FAT64, FAT128 etc, though Microsoft would probably be the sticking point there too.....
UDF was supposed to be a new replacement that could be universal (hence the name Universal Disk Format), and indeed it's easy to use in read only format (UDF 1.2 is used by even the lowest powered DVD player from 15 years ago!) but to write to UDF takes a lot more power and memory.  Also, the UDF format has evolved and is now even more complicated than before.  So, UDF is not an option either.
So, yes, the 2GB limited is caused by a 2s compliment implementation of a 32 bit file system (tecnically it could do almost 4GB, allowing for FAT terminators etc, but they only use 31 bits for the file size, which allows for reverse seeking), in a FAT (File Allocation Table) format.
Finding the next lowest common denominator is the task I hope they pull off soon.  While we can all usually work around the 2GB limit (by joining files) it would be much easier to have complete files in the first place

  • Script reporting wrong layer type after replacing footage

    Hi,
I do have a Composition with Solid layer. When I run this script with the layer selected, it shows me that this really is a solid layer:
    curLayer = app.project.activeItem.selectedLayers[0];
    if (curLayer.source.mainSource instanceof SolidSource) {
    alert("this is solid");
    }else {
    alert("this is not solid"); }
But when I select this solid in the Project window, right click, select Replace footage - File, and select an image, when I run the same script again, it still displays "this is solid" message.
When I reopen the After Effect file, is shows "this is not solid", which is right.
Is this a bug, or do I need to call some refresh function?
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Myleniu,
Thanks for your replay. Actually, it doesn't matter what makes up my comp, this problem just randomly happen when I render any comp. For example, I have a comp named "noise", I run a script to replace the music then render it, I use a "for" loop to do this 5 times and the music noise problem just happen one time.
I'm starting to think that win server might be the problem.

  • Replacing Footage in Merged Clips cs6

Is there any way to replace footage of merged clips in cs6?

When I right click on a merged clip in the Project window, Replace Footage and Replace With Clip are grayed out, unavailable. Are you guys able to do this with a merged clip? Maybe it's a setting I've missed.
When I right click on a merged clip in the Source Monitor, Replace Footage and Replace With Clip are not in the menu.
If I right click on a merged clip in an open sequence, I have the option of Replace With Clip from the source monitor, but that's not what I need to do.
