Premierre crash on dissolve on adjustment layer

In my project under a title i need some blure and luma curve adjustments. I placed an adjustament layer under the title and i like to fade in the effect. However, as soon as i place the dissolve on the adjustmentlayer premierre does not play anymore and cannot safe, it is stuck after that.
My workarround at this moment is that i have keyframed the induvidual effects on the adjustmentlayer to fade in and this works. I prefer not to work like this. Is it a known error that putting a dissolve an adjustmenlayer causes problems?
Thanks,
Ronald

Having a similar issue all of a sudden.  I use adjustment layers all the time.  All of a sudden, when I add a dissolve to an adjustment layer, the whole system hangs and crashes.  Have tried muiltiple times - all with the same result.  I basically have an adjustment layer that is spliced into multiple sections with a color effect on it.  I want to dissolve the first one on, and then it basically flashes with the color effect on and off.  As soon as I put the dissolve on the first AL clip it crashes.  Any ideas?

  • Adjustment Layer Crashes Premiere or Damages Project

Nearly every time I have tried to use an adjustment layer in Premiere Pro CS6, the application has hung if I tried to scrub through the video. Yesterday I decided to try placing an adjustmnet layer and only using the play function rather than scrubbing and it seemed to work alright. However, this morning premiere will no longer open the project file. Instead it give me the error message "The project could not be loaded, it may be damaged or contain outdated elements." This is an extremely heinous bug! Can anyone help or is this feature really just unusable?!!
Additionally, because I was so fastidious about saving, given the previous crashes, the only functioning autosave is 6 hours out of date!
    HELP!

I use ALs a lot, and haven't yet seen this behavior.
Have you added any effects to the AL?  Does scrubbing work OK without the AL?

  • Cross-dissolve from white frame to adjustment layer no longer works in CC 2014

Windows 7, Premiere Pro CC 2014
I have a video clip in a nested sequence on V1 and an adjustment layer on V2.
I want to dissolve from a white frame to the clip using the adjustment layer.
In PP CC (not 2014) this was simple:
Starting with a white PNG graphic on V2, cross-dissolve to the adjustment layer.
However, in PP CC 2014, this causes a dissolve to BLACK over the duration of the dissolve and then a CUT to the video.
This behavior in CC 2014 is illogical. Why has it changed?
There are other ways to do this, but this one was quick and easy, and is required for hundreds of clips in existing sequences / projects.

For me with a color matte it shows exactly the same behavior as with a PNG.
You're dissolving between the matte and the adjustment layer on V2?

  • Plugin crashes when I select an adjustment layer in a layer parm

If I drop my plugin on any layer and select an adjustment layer that is on top of the plugin's layer from the plugin's layer param, After Effects crashes. What gives? I'd love to paste some code here but it even happens when my plugin is doing nothing at all. I can comment out all of the render code and the plugin works UNTIL I select an adjustment layer as mentioned.
Is this a problem with After Effects or is there a way I can fix this?
Eidt: It seems native After Effects plugins also crash when I select an adjustment layer from a layer param, not just my own plugins.

Exact same thing happening to me. Are you on CS6 as well?

  • Adjustment Layer crash with MB Looks applied

I've been trying to add an adjustment layer to a sequence and apply Magic Bullet Looks to the layer to color correct all the footage below in one fell swoop (rather than apply it to all the clips individually). The sequence is about 7 minutes long, and is 1080p24; footage is H.264 files direct from Canon 7D (not transcoded). Every time I paste the Looks effect onto the adjustment layer it crashes the program. If I turn off the preview for the layer it's fine, but the minute I try to preview the effect it crashes the program.
Both PPro and Looks are up-to-date, and a restart did not help. Could this simply be a matter of RAM, horsepower and trying to color correct that much H.264 footage in one go? I have an older Mac Pro (see specs below) so I don't know if it just can't handle the task. I've seen others have problems with adjustment layers -- is this the Looks plugin? Or limitations with memory or graphics card?
MacPro 2.66 Quad Core, 12GB RAM (7GB avail to PPro), OSX 10.6, ATI Radeon 3870
    TIA, JVK

I'm having the same problem with Looks and Premiere CC. I have the latest versions and I also recently installed a Geforce 680 Mac Edition into my 8 core 2010 MacPro.
Nowhere do I see an option on the pluging to switch from the GPU to the CPU.
The main reason that I use an adjustment layer with Looks is to control the intensity of the look by varying the opacity of the layer.  Is there another way to control the intensity of the look?
    Thanks in advance...

  • Adjustment Layer + Ellipse Mask = Crash

    Adobe Premiere Pro CC 8.0
Discovered an interesting easily repeatable bug on my end.
I'm not sure how innovative of an approach this is - but it made perfect sense to me to use an adjustment layer as a power mask - set my mask size and placement up one time via the adjustment layers opacity - and then throw all my effects onto the adjustment layer to "affect" that same single masked area. The alternative to this, in order to affect the same masked area with different effects, is to drag multiple effects onto the sequence or footage itself and then set up each of their masks to cover the same general area. Obviously much easier and I would assume much less intensive (one single mask over your clip instead of multiples directly on it) to do the former.
Anyway this adjustment layer as power mask approach causes Adobe Premiere Pro CC to crash.
Please (please) note that when I abandon this approach and just put "effect(s) with mask" directly on the footage/sequence itself - I'm fine and can continue to work as normal -- and --  I consistently use adjustment layers with effects sans masks throughout without issue, so no worries there.
Much trial and error revealed it is specifically the adjustment layers with ellipse masks enacted on their inherent opacity that cause the issue.

It's crashing? I have 8.1 open and it is not crashing but not behaving correctly. I checked our database and there does appear to be a fix on the horizon for this. I can't say when, of course. Sorry.

  • Unsharp Mask on Adjustment Layer crushing whites during fade?

I'm using Premiere CS6 with video footage from a Canon T2i. However, the issue appears regardless of the video source.
When I apply a Film Dissolve to a clip in the timeline, then add an Adjustment Layer with an Unsharp Mask on a track above the clip, the whites in the clip appear to become crushed over the length of the transition, while still fading to black. This does NOT happen if I use a Sharpen filter instead of an Unshark Mask, and if I apply the Unsharp Mask to the clip directly instead of using an Adjustment Layer. Fading with another clip looks normal as well, the whites only get crushed when fading to black.
If the problem had to do with the Film Dissolve processing in a linear color space, then I would expect similar results with the Sharpen filter. Likewise, if the problem had to do with the Unshark Mask, then I would expect to see the same thing when it is applied to the clip directly.
Any ideas? I appriciate the help!

Looks like a bug. Thanks. I'll escalate it.
Workaround looks good, so thanks for that too! Nice find.

I think it has to do with blend modes, but can't say for sure.

  • Adjustment Layer Oddities

I'm seeing some new and unwanted behavior using Adjustment Layers.  I love to use these for grading, CC and other effects, as I can easily apply one setting to a whole range of clips.  However, sometimes a clip will require tweaking of those settings, or an additional effect.  So I cut the AL to match the clip, then apply dissolves on the AL to match the dissolve on the clip.  Below is a screen shot.
The problem is that the footage has started to freeze during the transitions, as if a frame hold is in effect.  Normal playback resumes after the transition.  That freeze also causes the export to fail with an Unknown Error.  If I remove the dissolves from the AL, all works fine, except that now the different settings on the AL effects just 'cut', which is jarring and unwanted.  It happens across media types and export settings, but strangely only on one of my two computers. Unfortunately it's my production rig, my personal computer still works fine with this.  (Damn, why couldn't that be reversed!)
Is anyone else seeing any issues with dissolves applied to Adjustment Layers?

Was this ever worked around? There do not seem to be any entries since 2012.
I have just come across the same problem. I created a sequence in Windows 8 and later wanted to on it on it in W7 Home Premium. At the beginning of the Adjustment layer I placed a cross dissolve, in order to fade up a group of video tracks simultaneously. But each time I loaded the sequence, the machine stopped responding to transport, or any, keyboard commands. After much head-scratching and cursing, I began to remove FX and video tracks from the work until it began working again. In my case it would load as expected but from then on no amount of cajoling would make anything keyboard connected work. Using the mouse gave some control, i.e. selecting panels, but it appeared that the 'monitors' were in an odd state, leaving tails of everything that passed over them, whether part of Premiere or not.
I tried using key-frames on the Adjustment Layer, to change the opacity (noting that somebody suggested 99.9% instead of 100%) but that didn't appear to work at all.
Did anyone sort this? If so, how.
    Many thanks.

  • Levels adjustment layer in a 16 bits/channel image

Since adobe removed the way i had been adding adjustment layers to 16 bits/channel images from pse 10, i had to try and find another easy way.
Here's the gist of it (if anyone's interested):
    1. Open a camera raw image, in the camera raw dialog set the Bit Depth to 16 bits/channel and press open.
    2. Duplicate the layer by selecting the move tool, hold down the Alt (option) key and move the image up just a bit (this duplicates the layer)
Select>All, use the align vertical centers and align horizontal centers in the tool options bar. Select>Deselect. (this aligns the layer)
    3. Add a layer mask to the layer (the layer mask button on the bottom of the layers panel)
    4. Make sure the layer mask is active by clicking on it. (this won't work if the layer mask is not active)
    5. Choose the Smart Brush Tool, Nature and click on Cloud Contrast (levels adjustment layer added)
    6. It's very important that you switch to another tool before doing anything else or elements is prone to crash.
    7. Now hit Ctrl (cmd) +i to invert the layer mask (double click on the adjustment layer to open the adjustments panel)
    8. Reset the Levels adjustment layer by clicking on the Reset to adjustment defaults button on the bottom of the adjustments panel.
Now your ready to adjust the levels on your image.
(i the screenshot i actually duplicated the background layer twice and renamed the Cloud Contrast 1 to Levels 1)
You can use this same method to get other kinds of adjustment layers, just try some of the different options in the smart brush menu.

Thanks for the tip R_Kelly. I still think it’s easier to use the sliders in camera raw e.g. exposure, fill light recovery etc.
However a levels adjustment could be useful for a badly exposed image where you want to drag in the extreme white and black points of the histogram.
I wonder how many other Elements hidden secrets are available!

  • Animate transform of sequence and adjustment layer

New to AE - trying to use it to rescue some time lapse footage taken in very dusty conditions. Lots of sensor dust
    So far
Exported sequence as tiff's from LR
Imported as tiff sequence in AE
    Created "New comp from selection"
    Set the comp to 1080p24
On the footage layer - scaled down to 46% to see all the image
    Added an adjustment layer
Added small ellipse masks over each dust spot to the adjustment layer
Feathered all masks to about 10px
Applied the dust and scratches filter to the adjustment layer and set to radius 30
This looks very nice. It's worked for all 6 sequences so far.
What I want to do now is a false pan or zoom by using different parts of the image - after all - the tiff sequence is far larger than 1080p.
I tried creating a new comp - embedding the original comp as a layer and then keyframed the position and scale of the layer. This gives me the effect I want and holds the footage and adjustment layer transform in sync - but - I'm seeing poorer quality as I scale closer.
I suspect that if I applied the scaling to the original footage layer in the original comp I'd not see this degredation (in other words - instead of scaling the outer comp from 100% to 130% I reckon that I should scale the footage layer itself in the inner comp from 46% up to 80% or so). This would also be more flexible as I could move across an image with position transform rather than just scaling.
But I just can't quite see how to also scale and position the adjustment layer in sync so that the masked ellipses stay over the dust spots over time.
I'd thought I could simply manually apply the same transform to both layers - but the footage layer starts at 46% scale - the adjustment at 100% (looks like it'd work for position tho).
Would be glad if someone could point me in the right direction

That looks perfect. Didn't even know it existed - but it looks like it does exactly what I want - control the inner params on each layer from the outer comp.
    Will give it a try.
Then I just have to get quicktime rendering not to crash but that's a different question

  • Adjustment layer and Magic Bullet Looks corruption

I often find using the adjustment layers to apply colour correction an easy trick and therefore love the concept.
However, I've recently noticed that PP CS6.0.2 does not like MB Looks to be applied to adjustment layers all that well.
On two recent projects, the primary sequence has become corrupt (PP loads and quits immediately) and I have to recover the edit by copying the none adjustment layer tracks to a new sequence and then relinking the media.
Today, I spent 4 hours recovering another complex sequence and wanted to know if any other person has had a similar experience applying MB Looks to an adjustment layer?
A word of warning to others who might be thinking of the same 'trick'.
Perhaps I am expecting too much of the adjustment layer concept.
    Thanks for any responses.
    J.

I found myself here because... I was trying to open last saved project and it just crashes.
I did use Magic Bullet "Looks" and "Cosmo" on both footage and adjustment layers.
"Panic... Drink Coffee" !!!!! idea !!!!
    Uninstall Magic Bullet
    Launch CS6APP
Open same project file warning you don't have plugins installed.
Delete the "Adjustment Layers" (you won't be able to get the adjustment layer settings back but, you will get the edit back
    Save project "new name"
    Re-install plugins
    Re-open CS6APP
"new name" project file opens fine without the adjustment layers.
But wait!!! Why should you uninstall Magic Bullet?????
    Open a new project
Import entire project file into new project
Go to media bin and delete the "adjustment layers"
Find last Sequence that had the adjustment layers and you can go back to working
We put finishing effects on entire or even sections of full edit
    1. Select edit < New Sequence from clip... apply effects on new sequence
    2. Not "adjustment layers" BUT!!
    2. Right now I found this just be an issue with RedGiant plugins I'm going to pass this post along to them..
This is a link to our project we had this happen too. (Sound tweaking)
