Premium rate texts.

My mother, a 77 year old lady who hardly understands English language, has been sent unsolicited premium rate text messages by 3 companies to her  Nokia 3410.
[She uses it only to call and receive calls from her family. No personal sms messages, whatsoever, has been sent or received on this phone.]
When I contacted them about this, 2 of the 3 companies refunded what they charged through the T mobile monthly bill. The other company, "CORE INTERNATIONAL s.r.o, Pocenice 203, Pocenice-Tetetice, 76833, Czech Republic" insists that the certain apps were downloaded (which is a blatant lie) and refuses to reimburse. The company "txtNation(dot com)" is the 'go between' in the UK.
I am just wondering whether anybody else had this experience with unsolicited, premium rate sms messages and how to get them to reimburse. Thanks for any helpful input.

If you contact the phone carrier (I assume T-Mobile) they should be able to block all premium rate numbers from contacting your Mother. I had the same problem using them with receiving unsolicited sms for which I was charged & a quick call to 150 via the mobile phone to that carrier sorted it.

  • Billing for premium rate numbers

My last phone bill included 2 calls to 2 premium rate numbers I did not call (£18).  Payphoneplus does not recognise the source of the numbers nor does BT.  BT insist the number was made from my house but this was not so.  They want paid and will not accept that they have made a mistake.  How do I get them to accept that they have made a mistake?

Thanks How do I prove that the numbers were not called from my landline? Will TalkTalk have this info?
    Now that is the problem.
The calls may well have been made from your landline, but not necessarily by you. If no-one else has access to your property (or dect access to say a cordless system) - e.g. relative, cleaner etc, then there is a slight possibility of a dodgy engineer making these calls say at the exchange or the street cabinet. It could even be an exchange software fault.
It's not clear what the calls are for (e.g. vote line, win line for scratch card etc). If the call length on your bill actually does give the cost of £1.53 a minute, then at least it can be confirmed as those numbers, and not anything else - e.g. international call to somewhere - perhaps missing off some digits.
Were the date/time of these calls in amongst a general list of dialled numbers - that you may be able to recall making calls to something at the time ?

  • Premium Rate Numbers on My Bill

I am trying to sort out an issue. At the time, I had 2 telephone lines from BT. The problem is, I have 2 numbers on my telephone bill I did not call:
    Number supposedly called: 0911 100 0054
    Sat 26 Jan 15:34 0911 100 0054 Premium Rate 4:41 £ 7.350
    Sat 26 Jan 15:25 0911 100 0054 Premium Rate 4:42 £ 7.370
As you can see, both calls were made at around the same time. One on each of my lines, at the time. Now, I'm thinking, how many times has this happened in the past?
I live in a 1 bedroom flat and work from home. So, it is impossible someone else accessed my property to make the calls. But, I did not make the calls!
BT don't want to know. BT will not refund me the money someone has stollen from me. BT told me I must pay my bill or they will take me through the debt collection process.
For the record BT, I do not except responsibility for the calls made to the number listed above. Even though I am being made to pay for the calls.
I have contacted www.phonepayplus.org.uk and they told me some real interesting things about the premium rate number above. They are dealing with my complaint. I also contacted www.actionfraud.police.uk. They couldn't really help me, but, I left a report in case it helps someone else in the future.
And, why does BT refuse to handle these types of complaints, well, differently? Surely BT can see that something isn't quite right? And why do I have to just to pay? It seems BT are just condoning / profiteering from the situation, if, they are not prepared to investigate. Sorry, but it's a joke, in my opinion.
Has anyone else experienced this type of fraud?

No, I do not work for BT, the only BT employees on this forum are the forum moderators.

  • Premium rate calls

My daughter-in-law received her BT bill as normal and noticed a single call charge of £28 for a 20 min call to a number she did not recognise .
She rang BT Help (customer services ) and asked the seemingly innocuous question "Who does this number belong to?" .
Oh dear , you can't do that .
But we need to know if someone is misusing our phone . Sorry , we cannot tell you , that info is confidential .
And so on , for 25 minutes until eventuially it transpires that the call was to a Tax Advice Service .
The light then dawned , she had phoned directory enquiries and asked for the number for HM revenue , and was given this 09---------number .
It turns out to be an official sounding set of worms who prey on people who have tax queries and will "sort any problems ".
All she rang for was to query an apparent over-tax of £15 .
OK , she fell into the trap like many before her and no doubt many in the future .
The same ratbags advertise on the internet with a page layout that at first glance seems to be the usual You Gov format .
So , she made a mistake but , why did BT keep arguing for 25 minutes that she could not have the firm's name before finally giving it ?
Why is the supervisor always busy and cannot come to the phone ?
Why can they not ring back when they are not busy ?
Why do BT make such a pig's breakfast of Customer Service ?
And , if you have rung a number , what is so secret about it that BT won't tell you on request ?
PS Just to let you know , avoid the following number prefixes if you do not wish to be ripped off
          0345 , 10pto45p/minute
            030 , 10p to 40p/minute
          0800 ,  from other than BT , 14 to 40p/minute
          0808 ,  ditto ,
          0845/0844/0843 , 1p to 11p by landline ,14p to 41p mobile
          0870/0871/0872/0873 , same as 0845 , but maybe more
              09 , 9p to £1.69/minute from landline , 50p to £2 .50 from mobiles

She should surely take that up with the "directory enquiries" she phoned. Sounds like that particular outfit has employees who are paid to give the wrong information.

  • Ovi store question. Nokia 97.

Are we now charged for receiving the confirmation text saying our purchase has been completed? I only ask because I have two premium rate text charges on my phone bill - one for £3 the other for £1, both sent immediately after a purchase, as the original purchases only came to £1 each I feel this charge is unfair especially as nothing has been mentioned.

Bit disappointed with contacting Ovi store about this, they replied quickly saying it was data charges, when I tried to reply telling them I had unlimited internet so the charge wasn't for data I was informed that I'd have to fill out the online form again. I phoned them instead & was informed to contact my phone operator (T-Mobile) as the texts were free, I did but they told me the text came from a premium rate number so weren't free although they did refund the cost they said it was a one-time thing. Perhaps I'm just with the wrong provider for the ovi text to be free.

  • Premium Text Charges to BT Broadband

I received a marketing text from BT asking if I was interested in finding out about the new handsets and to reply if I was. I replied and was called back. I decided I did not want further texts and sent a "STOP" text. I get my bill this month and the text message and the STOP message to BT did not come out of my bundle but were charged at PREMIUM RATE. Very naughty of BT to send a marketing text asking me to reply and not warning it was premium rate and charging again to stop these texts.

    Hi tjrad,
Can you email me your BT account details to [email protected] so I can look into this for you? Can you also include a link to this thread so I can come back to it?
    Thanks,

  • Fraudulent charges from Premium text messaging  company

Has anyone had to deal with guessology.com and their deceptive surveys? Just had an encounter where they attached an unathorized survey to facebook. The claim was they were doing the survey for facebooks 6th anniversary and they were offering prizes. The survey asked three questions one which was cell phone and email address. After the cell phone number was entered the text messages started coming in without a 4 digit authorization code.  The company was texted to stop twice but not before they sent 9 text. Did some research and this company has a growing history of fraudulent billing for text messages.
I contacted verizon customer service and got a bunch of runaround answers about how verizon bills for the premium service text messaging company but they really don't have anything to do with them and if there is a complaint then the verizon customer cannot file a dispute through verizon. The not so customer service orientated Verizon rep. tried to claim no one else has ever complained about this type of fraud before to Verizon. I highly doubt no Verizon customer has ever complained about fraudulent text message billing.
Does this sound remotely right? So Verizon is claiming they will take money for a fraudulent charge through their billing service but will not take a dispute regarding that charge? If Verizon is offering their billing services to bill their customer for another compnay then they should also be taking disputes if a Verizon customer has been wrongly billed through Verizon regardless if the billing is for another company. Otherwise Verizon should not allow third party vendors to use them for billing.

    Welcome to the boards.
If you do a search, we have beat the premium message subject and how we get them to death,
They ask for your Cell number, but if you search the Terme and Conditions PRIOR to entering the number, you would have known they were going to charge you for the 'Survey'. Some surveys on FB will take your mobile number if you publish it for friends to see and send you surveys and such. But all on FB do spell out what happens, albiet in very small and light gray lettering.
When trying to stop the texts, you only enter STOP, nothing else.

  • Premium Messaging Charge

I realized I have been charged 9.99 for the last 3 months.  Verizon Customer Service said they could not help me other than to block the messaging from now on.  The said the charges camer from NewsUCanUse but they had no phone number and no way to contact them for a refund.  I went to NewsUCanUse website and there is no phone number.  Luckily the number was attachted to a text on my phone:888-833-0755.  I had to tell the rep how I got the number before I could proceed.  She said to sign up that I would have had to enter my phone number into a website and then went in my phone and put in a password.  I did not do this ever.  Thankfully they gave me a full refund immediately.

The problem is that over the course of days, weeks, or months, the ability to discern the specifics of what did or did not happen become weakened. You could have been signing up for a valid website or using apps on Facebook and did not uncheck a little box that explains that it authorizes third parties to contact you (I see this little box everywhere). There have also been reports that some Droid apps downloaded from the Google Marketplace have been setting up Premium SMS services. With all of these possibilities, it is nearly impossible to discern what exactly was performed to cause the service to appear in the first place. If I can make a solid recommendation, block the service.
Read your monthly bill detail carefully each month that is how we picked up Premium Messaging charges on two phones @ $ 19.98 each, scheduled to bill monthly. Four separate 5 digit numbers ranging from dating services to ring tone downloads, none of which where legitimate on our part. Because I took the initiative and waded into Verizon's automated voice customer services I was able to have them reverse all premium messaging charges off my bill. Unsubcribing to the individual text messages worked but I recommend going online @ Verizon.com and blocking all further "Premium Messaging" text messages on your cell phone.
Verizon is complacent in this scam, even though my charges where readily reversed by Verizon, I feel they continue to have culpability in this matter. Verizon facilitates the scam by allowing usage charges to appear on their monthly billing, counting on most people pressed for time to pay their bill without looking at the usage line items.
