Preordering Albums - Receiving Single Straight Away - iTunes album display issue

When I preorder an album and receive a single from the album straight away it goes into my library. However, when the album is released the single does not join the album and its split in my itunes library. Does anyone know how to resolve this?

You can't brag about "it just works" when it doesn't.
Not to defend Apple too much here - I think this issue is a big problem and they need to fix it - but I'd love it if you could point me to an ad or speech where they said "it just works", about iTunes Match or anything else they make.
Anyway, this is happening to me, so I might try your solution and see what happens.

  • Itunes artwork display issue and a fix for  'unknown error occured (-50)'

Too bad they dont have stickies. This would be a great one.
This is a thorough fix for art work and the -50 error.
If you see artwork in itunes, first verify that the artwork is in the mp3 tag using a program like "tag and rename" http://www.softdepia.com/tagrename_download1291.html
If the artwork shows up in tag and rename, then you added it correctly.
If the artwork isn't displaying on ipod, delete the song and retransfer to the ipod. Next make sure the "view artwork" check box is checked. To do this connect your iPod to iTunes and there will be a checkbox that should be checked to see if you want artwork to show up on your iPod.
If you get this message -
The ipod cannot be updated. An unknown error occured (-50).
And have no artwork at all in you IPOD , dont fret. I am getting there..
NO you DO NOT NEED to FORMAT YOUR IPOD YET as commonly posted. I have tested and retested the following fix-
    Eject IPOD. Kill ITUNES.
    Backup the following files
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Music Library.xml
& anything in the Previous Itunes library folder
and delete them. More info on these at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93732
Dont worry, its much easier to recreate the database than to wipe your IPOD.
Next Start up ITUNES. Plug in IPOD. You now should have a empty database.
At this time, uncheck copy ARTWORK to IPOD, and when it's done deleting artwork, CHECK Copy ARTWORK to IPOD.
It now should sucessfully display ARTWORK and not get the -50 error!!
Now, goto you ITUNES Music folder and drag to the library and it will add you music back in, including your PODCASTS.
All you need to do is click the RESUBSCRIBE button and you are back in business!
IF this fails, which i cant DUPLICATE anymore, try this
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300248
Its the DREADED IPOD FORMAT article.
But you probably wont need it if you follow all these steps.
Post back if this doesnt work and if it does, give me some credit;)

Just as an fyi, to shorten this procedure instead of deleting the files i found out you and open the .itl files and delete all the lines in it so its an empty file.
Then open itunes, and it will rebuild the database with the files from the .xml file.
This saves you from having to rescan the songs..

  • Why does a single CD create multiple albums in iTunes?

How can I combine multiple albums froma single CD into one album?

The CDDB database behind on-line lookups is more of a grassroots / volunteer based system. If the database does not have the right information, then you can update the tags in your own copy of the file and try Submitting it to CDDB through iTunes.
I haven't done this for a while, but I believe they may have added some hurdles to this process to prevent abuse by those with too much time on their hands.

Any comprehensive STEP-BY-STEP for uploading my ORIGINAL albums and singles to SELL over iTunes?
This are all original (C)All rights reserved music, and I want it to be available over iTunes to sell as tracks or full album.
    Thanks!

Yes, they will do everything needed to get your music into iTunes. It is far easier to do it this way.
Most simply charge a small flat rate (~$10 a song, $40 an album).
If you want to do it yourself, you will need to register with Apple.
You will need to have at least 20 albums in yoru catalog.
    See this -> https://itunesconnect.apple.com/WebObjects/iTunesConnect.woa/wo/2.0.0.9.7.3.1.1

The requirements to work directly with Apple are listed below. If you do not meet all of these requirements, you can work with an Apple-approved aggregator instead. Aggregators are third parties that can help you meet technical requirements, deliver and manage your content, and assist with marketing efforts.
    Technical Requirements:
A Mac running OS X 10.5.8 or later
    At least 512 MB RAM
QuickTime 7.0.3 or later. This is so you can encode and deliver content using our dedicated software.
For optimal performance, use an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.5 or later. However, PowerPC G4 and G5 are also supported.
At least 20 GB of available hard drive space (more for larger catalogs) is recommended.
A broadband internet connection with an upload rate of 1 MB/sec or faster is recommended.
To deliver music video or concert film content to the iTunes Store, you must use an Apple-approved encoding house. Encoding houses typically charge fees for their services. Learn more about the differences between encoding houses and aggregators.
    Content Requirements:
At least 20 albums in your catalog
UPCs/EANs/JANs for all products you intend to distribute
ISRCs for all tracks you intend to distribute
    Financial Requirements:
    A U.S. Tax ID
A valid iTunes Store account, with a credit card on file
Apple does not pay partners until they meet payment requirements and earning thresholds in each territory. (This means you will not get paid until you sell a certain minimum amount of content) You should consider this before applying to work directly with Apple as you may receive payments faster by working with an Apple-approved aggregator.

  • HT203167 Single CD to ITunes creates several albums. How can I combine to get album back together

Transferring a single CD to ITunes, I get 2 or 3 'albums', a couple containing only one or 2 songs from the CD. How in ITunes can I combine these separate 'albums' to get the complete album back under one? Or what do I need to do in "import" set up to make sure CD is imported as an album rather than by artist?

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

  • Album view in iTunes 11 unusable because singles showing as "Unknown Album"

I have lots of "singles" in my collection (ie mp3s with nothing in the "album" field) as well as lots of albums.
Because of this, the "albums" view in iTunes 11 is virtually unusable, as 80% of the music shows as "Unknown Album" and prevents me from just browsing genuine albums.
Is there a ways to fix this so that the "albums" view only contains tracks that really are from albums?  Nothing I've tried (e.g. flagging them as "part of a compilation") seems to make a difference.
    thanks,

Thanks - I have already done sonething similar with a number of smart-playlists myself, but this is a poor workaround and means the pre-built views in iTunes are useless.  It's also something else to think about every time I import a new song so that it doesn't get lost.
Like lots of people, I've got loads of singles, mixes, radio shows and other music that is not groupable by album, and I find it ridiculous that iTunes hinders, rather than helps, to manage this..  Coupled with the appalling new search functionality this new version makes it harder than ever to navigate my music collection.

  • Album not showing up in itunes

i bought an album on my phone through itunes, all the songs show up on my phone but not all of them show up in my itues. any suggestions?

    Hey there,
Make sure that you're signed into the store. I know it sounds basic, but often it's those little things that go unnoticed!
If that doesn't work, you can simply plug the iPad into your PC and "Transfer Purchases". You should find that it will go across straight away.

  • How can I get iTunes to display the tracks from a CD in their original (album) order?

To be absolutely honest, I don't really understand what this box is for, so I shall just use it to repeat and expand on my question. (I have already sent a "Feedback" comment on the same topic).
How can I get iTunes to display the tracks from a CD in their original (album) order?
It seems to me that there is something very basic wrong with the way iTunes handles CD Tracks.
Professionally produced CD tracks are seldom if ever in a randomised order. Why then does iTunes seem unable to display the tracks in the order they appear on the original CD source - whether from a personally owned CD or from a download from the iTunes Store?
Some music demands a specific, non-alphabetic sequence in order to make sense. Why does it seem that iTunes only offers Alphabetic, or reverse alphabetic order - both of which make a nonsense of the original, often intended order of tracks?
Why not replace the so-called "cover-art" in the bottom left hand corner if the iTunes window - which, while it may look attractive to some, gives the barest of information concerning the original disc, with a list of the original CD tracks in their original order, so that the user can easily reestablish the order in which they should be played.
As I would expect legibility might be a problem with doing this, why could not the original contents, (in their original order), at least, be displayed when the "cover art" is double clicked-on - the result of which at present gives me an enlarged version of the "Cover Art". While on the subject of the contents of the source disc, what about all the album notes which someone takes trouble to write in order to increase the appreciation of the music on the CD and the listener's general background knowledge of the artists involved. Such notes, it seems to me, have considerable intrinsic value in their own account. I would, I think, normally be prepared to buy such "Sleeve notes" - so long as a "taster" was supplied (as it is for the music) - for something like the cost of a single 'Tune" on iTunes.
These two aspects let Apple iTunes down enormously, in my opinion. I think that by chopping even quite protracted sequences of music up into bits does no one any favours - except perhaps Apple's already quite substantial bank balance. People have to be aware that two and a half, to three and a half minutes is a very short time to develop a piece of worthwhile music, and that there are many, many composers, not all of whom are alive today who have written music that huge masses of mankind value for the enrichment of their lives and the human condition in general.
Please make the viewing of iTunes tracks in their correct order by default possible. By all means have the alphabetical variations available as offering a different approach to the music, but not the sole approach to it - PLEASE.
    Frustratedly yours
    Alan Whitaker
PS I work at my old 24" iMac Intel Core 2 machine which runs OS "Tiger" - because it is more beautiful to look at, the screen is more pleasant to work on, and because, in some ways it is more capable (it will run FreeHand MX without needing a "patch"), than my more recent 21.5" which runs "Snow Leopard". (I don't find it that much slower, either).

    Dear Mike
Thanks for the support. I am utterly amazed that after all the hype about how good iTunes is that it cannot play a downloaded CD in the correct order, and that what that order should be is not available directly from within one's own iTunes installation. (I know that one can go back to the iTunes Store to check what the order should be, but having downloaded the tracks surely iTunes is clever enough to retrieve this important information.
My iTunes to differ from yours in that I have also noticed that it seems unable to download copies of my "talking books" in the correct order either. But in my case it downloads them - from a CD - in order, but with the first track downloaded first - so that it appears at the bottom of the column of tracks so that it would get played last! (At least this is, while being inexplicable, a relatively "logical" bit of blundering and because of this is relatively easy to put right!).
I like many genres of music, some of which are not really programmed except perhaps by the artist performing them. I know that Frank Sinatra was very careful to programme his album songs to obtain a particular effect and in relation to the keys of the music. iTunes presumes to know better.
Film scores may be totally randomly put together, in some cases, but in others the order is vital to one's appreciation of the music as a whole and how it relates to the plot of the film.
In symphonic music most works are divided into sections and are conceived by the composer that way. Some individual sections may gain a life of their own if played separately, but they are never complete in the sense that the composer envisaged them without being placed in their proper context.
Opera and probably most choral music too, is similar except that the words may well become meaningless if the order is changed at the whim of a piece of ill-written computer code, while ballet music has to be heard totally within its sequential context or it becomes meaningless.
Finally, I would venture that iTunes, by jumbling up the order of the tracks as recorded on a CD, does an immense disservice, not only to the music on a particular CD, but to music in general, by expressing everything in terms of "Songs" - which it seems to interpret as stand-alone items of between 2 and 4 minutes whatever the genre. Even the way the iTunes publicity speaks of how many "songs" it can store instead of how many minutes or hours of recorded sound. This has to be another brick in the wall of "dumming-down" of people's expectations, and the shortening of their attention spans.
I don't know about anyone else, but I feel betrayed by Apple over this. Perhaps the look, feel and general presentation of an item are not the most desirable features of a consumer product. Maybe it should be judged more on it fitness for the purpose for which it was sold. There is one other possibility - that Apple are trying to redefine "Music" - and that everything that lasts longer than about 3.5 minutes or is in the form of what could for want of a better term be called symphonic in the broadest sense is something else - not "Music" within Apple's new definition, at all!
Well that's off my chest! now I can get down to creating some sort of order in my iTunes Libraries, knowing that I have to reconsult all the sources in order to confirm the source playing order.
Anyway thanks again. At least I know that it is not just me

  • Creating a Folder or Album For Miscellaneous Songs In iTunes

Hi! I'm not even sure how to search for the question that I have, but maybe someone here can help me. I want to keep all of my hundreds of single songs (mostly purchased from iTunes) in one spot, so that they don't clutter up my album catalogue when I search by Album in iTunes (ie I only want full albums to show in my album catalogue). I used to change the album name of all of my single songs to "miscellaneous music," but iTunes isn't letting me do that anymore, for some reason. It keeps changing the album names back to their original names. Is there a folder that I can place them in? A way to create a huge compilation album? I have a pretty sizable music collection and any ideas for how to keep my iTunes organized in this way would be so helpful! Thanks!

What you suggested is better for my immediate needs and would have been easier than what I did which was put a note in an unused IPTC field.
What you suggest creates a new album, but it's static. In other words if I change the rating to 0, the photo is still in the album. I was looking for a dynamic (smart) album which would change (the contents of the album would change) if I starred or removed stars from photos.
Thanks for the hint though. I might use it in the future if I don't think I'll need the dynamic album.

  • How to keep Single Songs out of Album View?  iTunes11

What is the proper way to label singles so that Album View does not contain an 'Unknown Album' for each artist with at least one song?
You would think leaving the 'album artist' and the 'album' field blank it would not put that song in album view, but that is not the case in iTunes 11.  This is how it works on my phone (4S) (iOS 6.0.1) .
A work-around is to label all singles with the correct artist and title, but label all singles with the same album artist (i.e. 'various artists') and with the same album (i.e. 'singles'), but if you did that iTunes will automatically move all the files from the correct artist folder into one giant 'various artists' folder. (if the 'keep itunes media folder organized box is checked)
What is the best practice to resolve this nearly useless album view function?

A cleaner solution is to create a playlist with your running albums, then update the other smart playlists with "Playlist" not in "Running Albums".
That way, you don't need to update each and every playlist when you add a new running album, you just need to put it in the Running Albums playlist.

  • A single and Complete My Album problems

A few days ago I bought a single and then today decided to buy the rest of the album.  When I would go into the iTunes songs list it showed that the single as a separate album.  I then updated the single to have the same album name and cover art as the other songs.  That seemed to have worked in the "Songs" view, but in the "Albums" view the songs are listed out of order and clicking "Play iTunes LP" skips the single that I bought before.  (I hope this makes sense).  Does anyone know of a way to officially make that single part of the album?
    thanks,
    Charles

I had this problem twice the first time I've tried to upgrade to iTunes Plus. In the first case it was because I forgot to set my Payment Mode... Oooops... No reason were provided for the second case and the third time it works...
So make sure that your Payment Mode is set.
You can also select the iTunes "Store->Check for Available downloads..." menu item, sometimes the items are available.
You can also try to update one item at a time (if you haven't try it yet).
If nothing works, I guess you'll have to send a mail to iTunes Support ([email protected])... Good luck!

  • HT1473 CD songs randomly spread over a number of iTunes albums

    Hi
When adding songs to iTunes from CDs the content of a single CD is spread across multiple albums in iTunes, seemingly in a random order. As a consequence it seems impossible to play the album either sequentially or in its entirety by opening the first of the iTune albums. I suspect I may be missing the obvious in terms of settings but hope that someone will take pity on me and point me the right direction.
