Prep HDV material in Windows (!) ?

Hi and sorry if this has been a topic before (can't find it, though).
A client has tons of HDV tapes that he wants to transfer to a hard drive himself and also likes to sort through the video in order to prepare for the editing.
He wants to bring the drive along so that I can access the video from within FCP.
As I have no clue about windows maybe someone can help as how to do this.
Client has no video applications on his machine (except for "movie maker" or something like that) but is willing to buy software if needed.
Can it be done or do I have to convince him to get a Mac

Generally speaking, it is a really bad idea to capture your footage on a different system to the one that you will use to edit with.
Windows typically works with .avi files. Final Cut Pro works with QuickTime but can accept avi, so long as it has the codec that was used to create the files, avi is clunky to work with at best. There is also a very real risk that you will lose source timecode, making recapture impossible.
Movie Maker is primitive. It is aimed at the casual user and almost certainly cannot output an edit decision list or a rough edit with burned in timecode that you could use as a reference.
To avoid any problems, your client would not only need a Mac, but also a copy of the exact same version of Final Cut Studio as yours.
Your easiest solution in the current situation is probably for your client to go through the shots on the tapes and using the timecode information on the camera's display to make a list of takes on paper.
There are apparently ways to record this information into an Excel worksheet and use that to make the take list. You would also need to have Excel on your computer to access the information. I don't know exactly how that works, having never used this method. Maybe someone else knows more and can contribute some information.

    I have issues several issues with *Final Cut Express 4.0* and iMovie '09 which might be related. Basically the *import of HDV material* seems to be impossible, at least with the camera I use. I really hope this is not the case!
    I currently try to convert from the Windows environment to Mac. On my Windows Vista system I use Premiere Elements 7 as a default software for video manipulation. The *HDV camera* I use is a tape based *HV-20 from Canon*. The import on the Windows system is done be a 4-pin to 4-pin Firewire cable which worked fine. The result is a file in format .mpeg.
    When I try to import tapes on the iMac I firstly discovered - a new cable is required. The iMac uses the 9-pin Firewire 800. So I have this cable. However it seems this does not solve the issue. *Neither Quicktime nor iMovie nor Final Cut Express 4.0 can even recognize the HV-20 camera from Canon.* What could be the reason? (remember the same camera setting is recognized by the windows system).
    Secondly I have issues in transferring my collection of .mpeg files to the iMac. Here I found out a mpeg-codec exists for Quicktime (applicable from Quicktime 7 onwards). This codec needs to be bought separately - however it didn't help in this case. Quicktime recognize now the .mpeg file but the screen remained black and the sound is silence. So, *how can I import .mpeg files into Final Cut Express 4.0*?

    Welcome to the forum.
    You have to select Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 in easy setup dialog to capture from this camera.
    No need of MPEG quicktime component at this stage. HDV is transcoded to AIC.
    Here's an example of workflow when working with HDV material edited in HD sequence:
    It's a must to use the correct setup in easy setup dialog to fit your shooted material on tape.
    Here's the steps to follow if you want to edit in HD (by the way some camcorders can shoot in HD mode or DV NTSC mode: wide or standard screen (or pal for european model).
    On the FX1
    -find the camera menu and set the recording format to HDV (it sould be 1080i60 (1080i50 for FX1E model)as it's the HDV format used by this model).
    -Set the output format to automatic or 1080i (this is the type of signal that will be outputed by your camcorder upon capture via firewire).
    -turn off you camcorder and mac.
    -Plug both devices with a firewire cable.
    -turn on the FX1 AND the mac.
    -Start FCE
    In Final Cut Express 4.0.1
    -Use "Easy Setup..." command in Final Cut express menu , select HD in format tab, 29.97 in rate tab and HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 (or AIC 1080i50 for european models). Click "Setup" button.
    -From this point, any new sequences and capture session will occur in Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 (the format used to edit in HDV).
    -Use command-8 to open the capture window. HDV is captured via a simple dialog. There are no capture settings or log clips info.
    -Start your camcorder in *VCR mode*(the play button on camcorder or on remote) and click the capture now button into FCE HD.
    NOTES: there is no sound from your MAC upon capturing. There is a lag time between what is played on your cam and what you can see on your mac screen, so use the camcorder screen to monitor the content.
    -Hit the "ESC" key when you want to stop the capturing process.
    Once the esc key is pressed, your mac will continue to process the captured material and the capture window should close.

    Hi all,
    In View Material Transactions window -> Location tab -> there are field names called Source Type, Source, Transaction Type.
    When i go and examine the fields, it shows LOC_TRX_SOURCE_TYPE_NAME, LOC_TRX_SOURCE_NAME, LOC_TRX_TYPE_NAME as field names.
    In which table can i search for the above field names???

    Table MTL_MATERIAL_TRANSACTIONS contains a column called TRANSACTION_SOURCE_ID, which is linked to different entities depending on which is the Source Type of the transaction (Purchase Order, Sales Order, Inventory, Job or Schedule, ...). A useful note to understand it is:

  • How do I edit HDV material on an extern computer?

    Hi.
    I´m in a tricky situation, since I moved from Copenhagen, Denmark,to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, without my macpro quadcore, on which all my material for my upcoming movie is on, but would like to access it from Rio. What to do?
    It´s all HDV material and I would like to edit it from Rio, accessing the Macpro in Copenhagen from Rio. Is this possible, and what would it take? Xsan, a very fast broadband connection? An extra server?
    Any help would be very much appreciated- thanks!

    I can't see this working. Accessing any footage over the internet would be too slow to be workable, let alone HD. If an ISP says they offer 8 Mbps, they mean it's theoretically capable of 8 Mbps but you won't get anywhere near that at peak times. You'd need an expensive dedicated line like a T1 or T3 or something. Also, Xsan is really designed for shared storage on a local network.
    You seem prepared to shell out money for a server and fast broadband line but really, the cheapest thing to do would be to buy an external hard drive and get someone in Denmark to copy the data onto it for you and ship it out. The second cheapest thing to do would be to get your Mac Pro shipped to Brazil. Anything else would be very expensive and very complicated.
    Edit: You could use Remote Desktop of course to control your screen on the Mac Pro but there would be a lot of interface lag. I don't think you could actually use it to edit something.

    i captured several hours of HDV material, all single clips, now i have over 300 single files/clips.
    I edit all clips into a timeline (1 hour each long) then try to export as QT movie..i use a fresh system Mac Pro 8 Core FCP 6.0.1....i wonder because creating QT Refs take only a couple of seconds, now i wait 1 hour to export 1 hour as QT Ref...is this normal ? waste of time for me to wait so long...

    in my own experience, exportings as QT Reference simply doesn't work as efficiently when dealing with MPEG formats. the long export time reflects this poor efficiency

  • No sound after HDV material import

    Hi,
    I am not knew at iMovie, but am new at iMovie HD.
    After importing HDV material from a Canon HV30 camera, and saving it, I find that the Audio is not heard on playback. I have to close the application and re-open it ... and the sound is heard.
    Has anyone of you encountered that sort of problem ? As per specifications, the audio is recorded in Mpeg1, 16bit, 48khz. Is that the problem ?

    your problem is a little different: you tried to import an MPEG clip into iMovie but iM doesn't work with the muxed audio stream.

  • Opening FCP captured HDV file in windows

    Hello. I'm trying to take a HDV file I captured in FCP and open it in either Adobe Premiere 1.5.1 or TMPGenc for encoding into VC-1/WMV HD AP (I'd like to edit it in Adobe Premiere), and then put it through say...Scenarist.
    I have not been able to open it in QT for Windows at all no matter what. I want to keep it as an HDV file and not reencode due to file space issues. I have intalled the HDV plugin for Premiere 1.5.1 however it doesn't open in anything at all, indicating it's not a Adobe issue.
    What i suspect is that it's not opening because it's in a proprietary QT wrapper that Apple will not let anyone access to build a decoder around. Once captured on a mac it's obviously not a .avi format file regardless of codec used.
    If this is not possible a simple 'no it's not possible' would easily suffice. I'm off to get some sleep. TIA.

    Most of the HDV video codecs used in FCP do not have Windows counterparts. Soon FCP Suite will be updated to version 6 (maybe NAB convention).

    I have a problem in printing the material description of 40 characters using zebra printer for label printing.
    If I take field of 40 characters, the printer is wrapping the text after 30 and print in the next line.
    So I divided the desc into 2 strings 30 and 10. and display them in 2 separate windows.
    but the problem is that it is taking space between these two strings, I tried to adjust the windows by overlapping them, but could not succeed .
    Printer settings can not be changed as client dont allow that to do.

    because its wrapping up the text after character 30 and if I print in the same window, it will not show at all
    like if my material desc. is like this:

    in print out it should print without any spaces in between g(30) and g(1) , but it is taking a space.
    is it because I have taken 2 separate windows ? I need to check it by displaying both strings in the same window. I will check that one.

  • Import HDV files from Windows PC?

    Hello. One of my friends has an HDV camera (Canon Vixia HV30) and a Windows PC. He will be shooting footage and sending me the raw HDV video on an external hard drive so I can process it in iMovie '09.
    It's not clear to me how I can import these files into iMovie Events. Is it as simple as File -> Import Movies? Do I need to rename the Windows files to .MOV so that iMovie will recognize them?

    Well, only Xpress Pro on Windows does HDV. I've been editing Avid SD footage in FCP by exporting QT Ref Movies from Avid (quick) so maybe it'll work the other way . . . if you have a PC.

    This is my workflow. I have shot some footage with my Sony z1 in 1080/50i (I work on the PAL format). I want to down convert this with my camera and edit in FCP 5.0.4. I am using a Power Mac g5 quad. How should I import this into fcp? What should my sequence presents be if I want to down convert from HDV (in camera) to SD? Right now, I am using the easy set up 1080i50. When I go to log and capture, I can't import any footage! Its says VTR ok and I can play the footage with my camera connected via firewire but when I hit capture now I get an error message saying that "capture now had to abort because no data was being sent." Please help

    FCP 4.5 does NOT support HDV as HDV was released quite a while after 4.5. You'll need FCP 5.0 or higher to work with HDV. DVCPro HD is not the same as HDV at all.

  • Issues using 11.1.1.7.0 demo material on Windows 64 bit env

    I use ODI 10g - so downloaded 11gR1 version 11.1.1.7.0 and worked through demo to find out more about 11g functionality.  I installed 11gR1 on Windows 7.   I have found an issue with the SRC_SALES_PERSON datastore in the "Parameters - FILE" folder under Models.  When I right click this datastore and choose "View Data" - I see that this datastore contains no rows, it is empty.  The other datastore in this folder (SRC_AGE_GROUP) looks good i.e. I can view its data.
    I checked the source file "SRC_SALES_PERSON.txt".  There appears to be an issue with it.  The first field in the file (SALES_PERS_ID) is actually 11 characters long - and not 10 characters as per the data store definition.  This means that the start value for the remaining 3 fields in out by 1.
    Also date format for HIRE_DATE appears to be incorrect.  The date format is defined as "dd/MM/yyyy hh:mm:ss" - however I think it should be "dd/MM/yyyy HH:mm:ss".  I read that ODI manages dates using the java format.  In java format hh represents hour in format 1-12.  Actual data contains 00 in hour field.  The java format HH represents hour in format 0-23.
    I copied the original SRC_SALES_PERSON datastore and made the above changes - I can now view the file data correctly in ODI.
    Has anybody else tried the 11gR1 demo on windows 64 bit and noticed issues with the demo relating to SRC_SALES_PERSON datastore

    you cannot use the SAP DB (=old name of SAP MaxDB) package you found on the old SAP DB site for your PI installation for various reasons:
    a) SAP DB version 7.4 is VERY old, it is no longer supported since the end of 2006 !
    b) typically, a SAP application and its DBMS are installed using SAPinst
    Try checking the SAP Software Distribution Center (incl. PAM: Product Availability Matrix) on the SAP Support Portal. You can also get the correct software there (when you're an official SAP customer).

    Is everyone writing their edited HDV movies back to tape?
    I have been playing HDTV movies from computers for the last 10 years.
    I can play my MPEG2 TS encoded 720p or 1080i movies smoothly on my 17" 1.3 GHz Powerbook using the VideoLan (VLC) app and they look great on the laptop screen or externally using a projector.
    You can also use other codecs like H.264 which may play HDTV smoothly on a dual core MacBook.
    Are any other forum participants doing this?
    I want to play back my FCP HDV movies on my PowerBook as well.
    With 1080i HDV movies (SONY HDR FX1) I have an interlace or "Venetian Blind" effect.
    Has anyone else seen this??? If so, do you know what to do to fix it?

    The frustrating part is that Apple has solves the problem for display from the time-line of FCP.
    I have also seen the problem solved with professional deinterlacing software used by NASA when they ingested some professional CBS HDTV 1080i of the 2002 winter Olympics tape for me.

    and I want to import HDV footage, shot with a "SONY HDR-HC7E" camera.
    Is it possible?
    Are there any settings to use?
    In the "easy settings" section, I see there is DVCPRO HD, but I guess it's not the same thing.... or is it?
