Prepaid Broadband for MBP

Found no answer to this in the original 2-year-old thread, so here I am to rehash it.
Will be traveling next month to an un-wired household here in the US. I've seen ReadyBroadband & VirginBroadband2Go prepaid (no contract) USB devices, but they seem to work only on PCs. Any Mac-friendly alternatives?
I have a 3G Blackberry Curve through AT&T but don't know if tethering is an option or would be better. I'm a geek in terms of web usage, but I'm not a hardware geek so please advise as if speaking to a newbie. Thanks.

Thank you, Jason. Fortunately, I have access to plenty of PCs at work, so (it appears) I could initialize the USB that way. Then it sounds as if the next time I plug into my MBP, it may be recognized. I hate to pay so much for the USB device only to find out I'm one of the unlucky ones. Still, this is a helpful direction as I missed this thread entirely in my search. Thanks.

  • Can you use a mobile broadband for Apple TV. My mobile prepaid is wifi but does it have to have credit on it to or can atv still stream through the device.

I have a mobile prepaid broadband. I want to buy a Apple TV but I'm unsure about whether it will work with my mobile broadband.
It is wifi.  Does  my wifi have to have credit on it for the atv to work.  It still works you just can't connect to the Internet with it unless I buy credit.  I just need to make sure.  I want to use my iPad and view on my he tv.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
It may well work but will likely be far too slow and far to expensive.

i am using a GLOBE prepaid microsim for my new ipad with retina. i was registered with supersurf 999, and i was able to enjoy my internet connection until i updated my ios with 6.1... since then, every time i go online,it says i am not registered with mobile internet... however, when i insert the microsim on my broadband, i can actually go online... what to do??? my apn setting in internet.globe.com.ph which is for prepaid users...

PS - I just sent this to a few of my friends in the big hardware review sites, as well as a few apple execs:
Whats up guys? Its your old buddy dom "battleship mtron author , 9 ssd drives in raid 0" years ago. lol
I wanted to fill you in on a HUGE problem with the new ios 6 update.
My iphone 4 updated without a hitch.
My ipad 3 on the other hand has a HUGE PROBLEM. It is essentially a brick without wifi (since the device relies on wifi for just about every task).
There are currently hundreds of a users within the last 2 hours reporting the same error on the apple discussions site.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/19626235#19626235
    What happens is simple:
    1. Download and install the update on Ipad 3.
    2. Try and connect to your normal wifi connection.
    3. It will connect for a few seconds and than fail stating "no internet connection available"
    4. It is no a brick without wifi accessibility. (unless we revert to ios 5)
I have tried resetting my router. Resetting settings on the ipad. Renewing the ip address both LOCALLY and through the WAN at the cable modem and rebooting all of my networking equipment (ie: router), I even tried doing a complete wipe and re-install of ios 6 fresh. You guys know I am a tech geek from my background and I have tried everything so I just wanted to fill you in on this potential problem for apple.

  • What is the ideal resolution combo for MBP 13" and Projector?

In our school district we are using 13" MacBook Pro's (OS X 10.7 Lion) and external epson projectors, projecting to a Promethean Smart Board. The default resolution for a MBP is 1280X800, that is a no brainer. Now everything I've been reading says that projectors like to be on 1024X768. When we do that the projector resolution dictates that resolution to the MBP screen and the MBP screen is of course distorted. They don't play nice when trying to set independent settings. We've found that 1280X800 for MBP and 1280X960 for the projector works best. When set at these settings and you plug and unplug the VGA adapter the settings on the MBP hold to 1280X800. But we have to keep calibrating the Promethean Smart Board though inbetween plugging and unplugging the VGA adapter's. Any ideas?

Try setting up the projector at 1024x768 as it calls for, but you want to use the best image. This might require a resolution reset as you are dealing with 3 different viewing sources. (ahh, if only they would come up with a standard.
You can try a pram reset with everything up and running, this can sometimes correct distortions.
    NVPRAM reset:
Power down the mac, power it back up, before the start up chime, press and hold the following keys:
option, command,P,R,(no commas) and continue to hold these keys till you hear the start chime 2 times. See what you have. You might have to reboot.
Also you can try connecting the projector, fire up the mac then the projector, it might auto-detect. You can try system preferences click detect displays,
As for the smart board, you would have to contact the manufacturer for details.
I know I have not offered much here, but it's worth a try, can't hurt anything.
Also, if you plan to contact the Community in the future, please ammend your profile with the model and OS you are using, as it could help you get more info.
Does your IT person have  stuff locked out? Most school districts have many of the useful tools locked out.
The reason I know this is my wife is a school teacher, and we end up doing most of her multi media stuff on one of our personal computers, because of the lock down imposed on the entire staff.
I hope there is something that might help you here. If not get your IT person to make it happen.(If they can)
    Good luck

  • Apple Care plan for MBP

Does anyone know why the Apple care plan for MBP is more expensive than all the other Apple care plans? Even the Mac Pro has a cheaper plan. It doesn't make sense to me.

It's obvious to me. My Mac Pro sits in one place, undisturbed. It has a generous, efficient cooling system. It's easy to service.
My MacBook Pro is carried around town. It's jostled back and forth in my bag as I walk, or as my car goes over bumps. I'm always putting it on tables, creating a slight impact each time. It goes through a lot more power/temperature cycles as it sleeps and wakes. The components are smaller, tightly packed, more expensive to disassemble and service. A laptop goes through a lot more stress and trauma than a desktop, so a laptop is much more prone to failure.

  • Video Player for MBP

    Hi,
I wanted to know some video players which are currently available for MBP. I cannot play any .avi and .wmp files on Quicktime.
Can anyone please tell me which players are recommended for the MBP?
    Thanks.

VLC can play DivX videos. Here is a complete list of all the codecs supported by VLC:

One note: avi is a file format, not a specific video encoding algorithm. For example, you can have an avi file that contains a Divx video, or an avi file that contains an mpeg video.

To use the hotspot for any of those devices, I believe you have to switch to a postpaid account and plan. You can see the pricing for the available postpaid plans under the "Shop" area of the website.

With your line attenuation you should be getting a sync speed of 16000 kbps and a profile of about 14 Meg, however it looks like you line has been capped at 1/2 a Meg, that is why your noise margin is so high ( should be around 6dB ) now this could be due to a line fault ( loss of framing/signal ) or a problem with your internal wiring.
However since you have has this problem for so long your best bet is to ring BT India on 0800 111 4567 and try and get a SFI fault raised so an Openreach broadband engineer can come and see if they can sort the problem out.

  • Is there any prepaid plans for the iPhone 5s?

I was wondering if there were any prepaid plans for the 5s.

I tried to live chat with the carriers up but for almost everyone of them I had to have an account so that didn't work out too well.

  • What anti-virus software is recommended for MBP? CR recommends AVG?

Why? There are no viruses affecting Macs. Just use common sense. Don't open email attachments you don't know where they came from. Same with software. Don't download or install software you don't know where it came from and you will be fine.

  • HomeFusion Broadband for a semi-mobile "HD streaming video" user?

I currently signed up for 20GBs/month plan for my 890L wifihotspot.  For an ipad/PC user, that's not really enough for watching streaming HD videos (even when limiting yourself to only 5 TV shows or so a week).  It looks like Verizon offers a HomeFusion Broadband device; which might be more appropriate for an ipad or a PC.  However, I dont see any prices for it; and, it appears to be advertised for people's residence.
I was hoping someone has tried using the HomeFusion Broadband for their Internet service; and, knows the limitations Verizon has placed on this device.  Maybe it can be used for travel?  Or, exceptions can be made so it's not restricted in one place?  Maybe there's a better plan for mobile users who watch HD videos?

Thanks for the quick reply!  Actually, 30GB's per month is just about right for what I need; certainly better than 20GBs.  Yes, I also saw that it said something about attaching an antenna to the side of the house.  However, I'm curious if that's meant for people that live in the boonies that don't have good signal.  I have minimum 3bars of signal on my 890L hotspot without needing any antenna at all.  It would be good to know if anyone has tried using this device while mobile.  I dont see how it would differ from any other 4G LTE networked device.
I would like to know if there's any limitations other than that requires someone to keep this device at any specific street address.  I saw also something about needing access to 911; which, I have access to no matter where I am.
EDIT:  I just saw a picture of what the antenna looks like.  Holy cow.  LOL.  Is that used to contact a satellite on mars or something?  I dont need an antenna like that to use my 890L hotspot; and, have a very stable signal; even while driving.  I wonder if that's just part of VZW's wireless "in home broadband" marketing package.

Load the airport utility for windows.. it has several parts.. the key one is bonjour for windows which helps windows find apple network devices.
The TC should also be setup with names that windows can use.. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
So Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule
Is not a valid windows name.
    TCgen5 is.
