Preparing files for export to digital editions

Hi, Is there any documentation for best practices for creating documents to be exported to Digital Editions? I would like to retain as much bold and italic, bullets, have some spacing control, etc. In other words, would love to keep post xml manipulation to a minimum. Having a hard time understanding whether character and paragraph styles help more, or adding tags...or something else.
Thanks so much for any assistance or pointers...

If the document is fairly basic (no sidebars, photos, etc.), it's all maintained when you export.
ID has a nasty habit of dropping the fonts from the XML, so you may need to fix that manually.
Spacing control is more difficult, because the text in the ePub is meant to reflow, so it's impossible to fix widows, etc.

  • 'Preparing data for exporting' takes forever (Urgent, please help)

    Hello,
    I'm currrently editing a 1920x800 anamorphic Full HD project on Premiere Pro CS5. The original full HD clips were replaced with AE-comps using Dynamic link for color grading. The project is 15 minutes long and mainly consists of linked AE-comps. The sound is filled with gunshot sound effects, music and original recorded audio. That audio is also linked with Soundbooth for some postwork.
    Here's the problem: when i hit the 'Export' on Premiere pro I get the window, i choose my settings (H.264 10 mbps) and then when I hit the 'Qeue' button it shows the progress bar 'Preparing data for export' and Media Encoder starts up normally. The problem is nothing happens afterwards. The project doesn't get loaded in AME and the progress bar keeps on telling forever that it's 'preparing data for export' Normally this process only takes up a minute or 2 max. How can i fix this?
    Editing rig:
    27 inch imac
    4 gigs ram
    2.53 i5 processor
    ATI 4850
    Please help me with this, my deadline is within 4 hours
    Thank you!

    I have some suggestions you can try.
    1. Can you try exporting directly from inside Premiere, instead of adding to AME from PR?
    - press the Export button inside the Export Settings Dialog, not the Queue button
    2. Can you import the sequence directly into AME?
    - launch AME, File menu\Add Premiere Pro Sequence
    3. Try using a different format other than, H.264.
    4. Try using PR CS5.5. You can download the trial version and use it for 30 days.
    Hope this helps. If not, please re-post with test results.
    Thanks

    Does anyone recommend a good graphic utility to prepare files for the web?

    GraphicConverter as noted by Don, or Photoshop Elements are the favourites. Both will allow comprehensive editing, and save for web facilities including reducing the .jpg quality to shrink file size without making the picture smaller.
    There is a free application calld Gimp (open source) but I don't know how good it is or whether it's updated for Lion.

  • Downloading epub files from library into digital editions 2

    I am unable to download from my library to digital editions 2.  They told me to make sure the acsm and epub files are pointing to Digital Editions, which they are, they also had me uninstall and reinstall the adobe digital editions which I've done.  I have even tried using different browsers all of which the same problem exists.  Please help this is so frustrating I am using a toshiba 32-bit operating system with Windows Vista and firefox browser.  I have also disabled my firewalls and still nothing is working.  Please help me someone.....  I have searched for help and it appears there is a problem with the newest version of Digital editions, but I cannot find anywhere where I can try installing a lower version of this application.
    thanks in advance

    There are lots of bugs in ADE2.0.  Try replacing ADE2.0 with the older but more reliable v1.7.2.
    (You can have them both installed at once if you like.)
    Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

  • Getting support for the dreadful Digital Editions

    I checked out a book from my library, & returned it on the expiration date using Adobe Digital Editions (ADE).
    Then, because I wasn't done reading it, I checked it out again, (after the expiration period), and attempted to have Adobe reauthorize it.
    What happened?  ADE went into a loop for several minutes, flashing a popup so fast I couldn't read it, ultimately telling me I'm not authorized to use the book.
    Wait, I just checked it out!
    Not wanting to waste too much time on software bugs, I checked out a different book.  This time, when the library due date arrived, I let the book expire without de-authorizing it in ADE.
    I did, however, remove the book using ADE's delete book function.  Then, I went to the library.  The library crudware reported I still had the book checked out, and wouldn't let me download it.  Hunting around on my computer, I saw two 6 MB files in Adobe's Digital Editions folder:  they had the same title as the book I had previously used ADE to delete, dated when I ***first*** checked the book out from the library.  Oh, I guess ADE didn't remove the book as it reported.
    Okay, I said, "I'll buy the **!@$$ book!"  I went to Google, and I bought the book, which gives me the right to read it on my ereader.  In google, the book opened just fine--I guess Google knows how to write software--and I could sit and read the book on my computer, where I don't want to read it.  Nope, I want to read it on my Sony ereader.  That requires I use ADE.  Bummer!
    So, I clicked the Google button to download the book.  I clicked on the book file as instructed.  Up pops a window from within the dreadful ADE:  "Document is licensed for a different user account."
    I went to Adobe's website to report a bug.  They don't seem to take bug reports on this software, or if they do, they hide it well.  Somewhere, I found a forum in which someone with similar problems told one of the 20 or so people who have previously had this problem that they should delete ADE entirely & reinstall.  I tried that.  Result?  Now, ADE doesn't do anything when I click on the book title.
    You folks at Adobe call this software?  I call it garbage.  And I know of what I speak, having 20 years of software design experience.
    If I don't have access to the book I purchased within a week, I'll also call it a small claims case, and I'll look forward to seeing you in court, where at least if I'm made to waste 3 hours there'll be someone there to respond:  a judge.

    In my opinion, I encountered a series of problems that not only look like they were caused by bad ADE software, they were caused by bad ADE software.
    I did complain to my library about not being able to check out a book that had been turned in.  They pointed the finger at the provider of their library checkout software, which I had described in my post as crudware, (and I think they also mentioned problems with ADE).  But even when my library wasn't involved, Adobe's Digital Editions didn't work right, unless you call "working right" keeping me from reading on my ereader a purchased copy of an ebook.
    After hours of digging, I found the apparent source of the problem:  my password and/or account were different at Adobe and at Sony.  How could "good" ADE software impose such an obscure requirement?
    Adobe digital rights management software is supposed to work with numerous vendors and hardware platforms, no?  Requiring the passwords or the accounts be the same at Adobe and at Sony is not good software design, (especially if it's a hidden or undocumented requirement), because it requires users to know the internals of software assumptions.  If that's good software design, then it's good car design to require one to wear a matching shirt and pants before allowing one to start one's car.  Refrigerator won't work? It's because you forgot to put in matching ice cube trays.  Washing machine not running?  It's because you put a pair of mismatched socks in it!  If Adobe requires the Sony (or Barnes & Noble) account/password to match its account/password, it should not allow one to establish an account when that is not the case, or it should report that "error" clearly.
    Bad software requires users to perform "tricks" to get the software to perform its functions correctly.  Tricks are for magicians, not product users. Engineers should think of the "tricks" they can perform--i.e., in the design phase--to make a hardware/software experience pleasant and seamless.  For example, to buy a book in a bookstore, I
       (1) walk up to the cash register and pay for the book with cash or credit card, which authorizes me to read (and/or sell my copy of) the book.
    In my opinion, unless and until Adobe Digital Editions can make the process of ebook buying/authorizing that pleasant and seamless, it has failed its task.  As evidence of the bad ADE software about which I complained, I point to the pages of complaints in this forum, from apparently marooned ebook owners.
    How did I ultimately "solve" the problem that didn't allow me to read the book I had purchased?  After spending hours fussing with Adobe's software, attempting to decipher its error messages, attempting to locate its documentation, (why no help pulldown, as in every other piece of Mac OSX software?), and then posting here, I gave up dealing with Adobe.  Not wanting to hassle with the small claims court suit I mentioned in my initial forum post, I contacted Google to have them rescind my purchase, which they did promptly, through a convenient link.  (How I love software that works right!)  I then contacted Sony, which spent another hour or so with me to diagnose and correct the problem, having me change my account information for Adobe and Sony, even though it certainly looked like it was Adobe digital rights management software that wouldn't let me authorize the book to my ereader.  (Thank you Sony!)
    After about 7 hours of dealing with this problem, spread over several days, I bought the book again.  In that time, I could have flown across country, bought the book, and read the book on the return flight.  Software that makes tasks harder to perform is not "good" software.

  • Iphoto fails to render files for export to certain folders after upgrade

    I just upgraded to Yosemite and the latest version of iPhoto but I now unfortunately get an error message when I try to export photos. It seems to work if I export to the main Documents folder but fails if I try to export to a sub folder of the main Documents folder (very odd) which is where I want the exports to be saved. The error message says "Unable to render file for export:/Volumes/NO NAME/DCIM/IMG-1058.jpg". I don't know why the path name shown here is a SD Card path which is not connected. Hope someone can help? It worked fine before the upgrade to iPhoto 9.6.1
    Thanks
    Craig

    The iPhoto preference file might be wonky. Try the following:
    1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
    2 - delete the contents the following folder: User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
    3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
    NOTE: For Mavericks and Yosemite,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
    where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

  • How to define table specific QUERY in parameter file for Export Utility

    Hi All
    I am trying to create A SINGLE parameter file for export utility. I have 2 tables and want to use a different QUERY condition for each of these tables. However i do not want to create 2 seperate parameter files for this and run/script exp twice.
    Is there a way to do it ?
    NOTE: I am using normal export utility for Version 9 and NOT oracle data pump.
    Following is an example of what i want to achive in parameter file:
    Tables = (TabA,TabB)
    # for table - TabA
    QUERY = "where id =25"
    #for table - TabB
    QUERY = " where court_id=54 and id >1"
    Please advice on syntax of parameter file so that exp knows that it has to process 1st condition for only TabA and second condition for TabB.
    Any samples/syntax examples are greately appreciated.
    thanks in advance!
    cool tech

    No there is no such alternative. Query condition is applicable to all the tables listed in TABLES parameter.

  • In iPhoto I get "unable to render file for export" when trying to export a file to an SD card?

    I have been trying to save jpg files to an SD card.  When I export from iPhoto is says "unable to render file for export".  It will let me export to the desktop.  Then when I try to copy or move to the SD card, it says the SD card does not have enought free space.  It's a 1 gig card and the files are under 100k.  I have tried different SD cards, formating the cards with the camera.  The card has 200 filles (57mb) when I started and wanted to add more.  I have ereased the card trying to see if that would help.  No go!  Any ideas?

    What is the filesystem on that card?
    i assume, you made sure that the little white lock mechanism at the side of the card is unlocked?
    Try, if you can set the "Ignore ownership on this volume" flag for the card in the "Get Info" panel for the card.

    There's something else going on. When you search, the search box searches the Spotlight database that it created when indexing. It doesn't search the computer again. I suspect a hosed index. System Preferences->Spotlight->Privacy->delete all volumes and readd them back in. That should reindex the computer and all attached HDs. BTW, by default there are many places Spotlight doesn't return information from, mainly the various Library folders and the System folder. If you want to find everything, do this:
    Click on the Desktop, CMD+F, click on Kind button, select Other, drill down to File invisible, check it, continue down to System files, check it, and click OK. Now, click on + button, click on the left-hand item and select System files and select are included, click on the plus button, click on the left-hand item and select File visibility and select visible or invisible, select File Name, save the search, drag its icon to the Dock, and use to search your entire Mac—currently starts with By Name, but Contents is available. I use this instead of CMD+F or CMD+spacebar for all searches.

  • Is Lightroom any good for preparing stills for export to Final Cut Pro?

    I am a fan of Lightroom. I am running ver. 3.0. I am wondering if it might be practical to use Lightroom to prepare stills for import toFinal Cut Pro when I don't need a layer. It really is good to use Lightroom if you can, right?  In the past most people have used Photoshop for this task. Here are a few notes I have made from a tutorial which shows how to do it in Photoshop, it seems very good, title: "Final Cut Studio 2, Moving on Stills" is by Larry Jordan and is at Lynda.com:
    Scaling: Use bicubic sharpener if reduction is required
    Edit / Assign profile:  SRGB IEC61966-2.1 for import into SD project,  HDTV((Rec. 709) for import into HD Project
    (Is exporting to these profiles  in Lightroom as good as assigning them in Photoshop? Unfortunately I don't understand this stuff fully. In my PSCS5 The HDTV)Rec 709) is on list, It isn't on list for LR when in Export window, I click on color space and select Other. It seems like list comes from Library/Preferences/Adobe, Color/Profiles I don't understand why it doesn't show up with all the other profiles in LR. )
    Image mode - set to RGB Color (I don't understand what that accomplishes, can anyone explain)
    (It sounds like saving file as a TIFF is the a best way, I can do that with LR)
    I wonder why not use 16 bit depth for export? There must be some pros and cons. Any comments?
    Has anyone already done this with Lightroom? Any comments appreciated.

    I doubt you'll notice the difference if you are not watching on a
    reference TV monitor. I took a few sRGB images into Photoshop and
    assigned the HDTV profile. I don't see any difference at all.
    2010/8/10 Dorin Nicolaescu-Musteață <[email protected]>:
    >>  if you look at the HDTV (Rec. 709) profile in Colorsync utility, it is exactly equal to sRGB. This makes sense as the standards are based on each other and they have the same primaries. I doubt there is any point in using the HDTV profile.
    According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rec._709#Transfer_characteristics, both share the same primaries and white point, but have a different gamma. Doesn't it mean that same pixel data should look different (slightly lighter and darker) in each space?

  • I can't open files after redownloading Adode Digital Editions

    I redownloaded Adobe Digital Editions after my laptop crashed and had to be restored to its out-of-box state. But now some of the acsm and pdf files I could open can't be opened anymore. I continually get an error message about failing to obtain the license for these files. Is there a way to fix this?
    Thank you.

    You need to make sure your new copy of ADE (Digital Editions) is registered with exactly the same Adobe ID as your old one was.
    DRM books are locked to a particular Adobe ID.
    Authorize it (ctrl-shift-u, or menu/Help/Authorize Computer).
    If that doesn't work, try deauthorizing and reauthorizing as below.
    ~~~~~
    Sometimes ADE gets its registration/activation confused and in a semi-authorized state.
    Uninstalling and reinstalling does not help.
    Unfortunately, it often then gives misleading error messages about what is wrong.
    A common incorrect message informs you that the ID is already in use on another computer and cannot be reused.
    This can often be resolved by completely removing any authorization using ctrl-shift-D to the Library screen on ADE (cmd-shift-D if on Mac).
    Restart ADE, and then reauthorize with your (old) Adobe ID.
    In extreme cases on the mac, the following extra step has helped some people.  Navigate to /Users//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Digital Editions and drag the activation.dat file to the trash. If you are using 10.7, see Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 Lion. http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1265248?tstart=0
  • Do I need to use Flex Files for a 24 fps edit?
    Hello.
    I am shooting on 16mm film, transferring to video (with key code burn in), editing on Final Cut 4, then matching back to film.
    I would like to save money by not having to create Flex Files, and was told that if I do a reverse telecine in Cinema Tools (converting 29.97 transfer to 24), and then edit at 24 in FCP, I will be able to generate (manually) my own cut list when I am done by noting the key code burned at the head and tail frame of my shots. The Cinema Tools manual even implies it would be able to generate a cut list itself?
    Can anyone speak to this or tell me why this plan wouldn't work--why I absolutely need a flex file? This will be a short film (under 10 minutes) and I will be capturing all the footage for the edit, so I don't need the flex file for help with capture, and I don't mind the time needed to log key codes myself for the cut list.
    Thanks so much in advance for any help!
    Hi. It costs enough to make a difference for my very, very small budget--a flat fee each time I transfer and I am shooting 100 foot rolls so there could be up to five or more transfers. Since I am capturing everything (entire camera rolls), I'm trying to understand if I need the flex files--if the key code is burned in, can't I use that for cut list? In other words, if I don't need the files for importing, what other reasons would you strongly advise me to have them made?
  • Trimming HD video files for export from Windows to After Effects on a MAC
    Hi,
    I have some .MTS files created using 2 HD camcorders:
    1) Panasonic HDC-TM700 which shoots full HD @ 1920 x 1080 and
    2) JVC Everio GZ-HM550 which shoots the same HD resolution
    I am working with PP CS5 on Windows 7
    I need to trim some small pieces (5 -10 seconds) out of many of the .MTS files to send to someone using After Effects MAC and FC Pro
    In trying to keep the highest HD resolution of 1920 x 1080, the number of choices to select when creating a new sequence and then when exporting from PP is confusing.
    Note: I notice that 2 clips I have in my PP project bin at the same time have different frame rates which I believe that 1 each came from my different cameras:
    file 1) 29.97fps 48000hz compressed stereo
    file 2) 59.94fps 48000hz compressed 5.1
    Can anyone guide me here on sequence and export settings & codecs to maintain the HD resolution and least loss of quality on export?
    Will the 2 different frame rates prior to export cause any issues? I'm assuming PP will re-interpret for output.
    Thanks
    > I understand the files are not compressed.
    You misunderstand. The files are compressed. But they're compressed without losing any information. Losslessly compressed movies are a lot smaller than uncompressed movies---but they're still bigger than movies compressed with a lossy codec that would be more suitable for final delivery and distribution.
    > How long are the movies your associate sends you and approx what do file sizes look like?
    I tend to work on individual clips that are from several seconds to a few minutes long. They're usually a small number of GB each. Don't fret about large file sizes for intermediate files. Making movies small matters when you're streaming them for final delivery, not when you're handing over a hard disk or using an FTP server to exchange files for post-production work.
