Preparing for new install

I am getting ready to prepare my powerbook to upgrade to Tiger from Panther. I am looking for opinions on the best way to prepare it. I have had some speed issues and want to wipe the computer clean and start from scratch. Right now I have Tech Tool Pro with a E drive. Should I get rid of the E drive or keep it? I also want to use the Wipe Data feature with Tech Tool. There are 4 different wipe types and I don't know which to use. The choices are:
Binary 00000000
Binary 11111111
ASCII Garbage
I am already starting to copy all important files to my external drive. I really appreciate any opinions.
Thank you
Matt

Matt:
It is not necessary to wipe your drive to upgrade your OS. You can make sure the volume is in order by running Repair Disk from the install disk and, if necessary, run Tech Tool Pro, then use the installer to do an Archive and Install preserving your preferences and settings.
However, if you prefer to completely wipe the drive then install from scratch, here is how I would proceed:
• Since you have an external HDD (hopefully a firewire drive), I suggest that you clone the entire volume on the internal HDD to the external HDD using SuperDuper. This will give you a full bootable backup should things go awry and you need to return.
• Having made a full clone, I would then reformat and erase the HDD using Disk Utility (step by step directions follow).
• I would then do a full install from the install disk. (step by step directions follow).
• After the installation for the setup I would use Setup Assistant/Migration Assistant to move everything needed to be transferred from the cloned volume.
Here are the directions promised:
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
• With computer shut down insert install disk in optical drive.
• Hit Power button and immediately after chime hold down the "C" key.
• Select language
• Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.

• Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
• Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
• Select Erase tab
• Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
• Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
• Click Erase button
• Quit Disk Utility.
Installation Process
(Note: You need not shut down and reboot after the reformat and erase. After you quit Disk Utility, simply being at Open Installer etc.)
• With computer shut down insert install disk in optical drive.
• Hit Power button and immediately after chime hold down the "C" key.
• Select language
• Open Installer and begin installation.
• Select installation option
• Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.

  • How can I disable notification for new install update for adobe??

How can I disable notification for new install update for adobe (adobe reader, flash player, etc.)
Is there way from SCCM2012 or group policy or any easy way?????
    Please help me

If you mean the built-in functionality of Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash, it's different mechanism for both.
For the reader, check this guide for example:
    http://www.adminarsenal.com/admin-arsenal-blog/bid/84409/Adobe-Customization-Wizard-XI-Tutorial
For flash, check this guide for example:
    http://jthys.wordpress.com/2012/07/07/disable-automatic-updates-for-adobe-flash-shockwave-player-reader/
After you've studied the above guides, you need to implement those to be used with ConfigMgr application deployment so that when you deploy Reader/Flash, you get the result you want = no automatic update functionality.

  • How to prepare for FRESH INSTALL?

    hi all.
i am about 2 years into my move back to mac with a small professional office and i am considering a fresh install of Lion from Snow Leopard on the Mac Pro (1st generation) and a 2009/10 MacBookPro. I believe the Mac Pro shipped with Leopard and the MacBookPro shipped with Snow Leopard but not sure if i am off by an OS release on that.
in any event, it has been a /ton/ of effort in customizing this setup and it includes an install of Mac Drive, Parallels and other software and software settings. I have also edited the registry on windows in a couple of instances and i have run a couple of Terminal customizations on the mac side.
    two questions.
    1. what should i do to prepare for a fresh install and how much time might be involved in redoing my setup?
    2. is it worth all the effort? i mean, i /do/ have a 2 TB hard drive to take the place of my existing 1 TB drive and I could use the extra space. but at the same time i wonder if a fresh install is necessary.
    TIA

If I understand correctly, you are still running SL. As I said, I'm not familiar with this when using any Windows install. If it were strictly Apple, then it wouldn't be a problem. But still if you want to do a full clean install, that would require reinstalling all applications manually. Otherwise, you would still be migrating the same files your already have.
Installing Lion over SL will give you a new OS. Unless you have hard drive issues, this should be all that's needed.
What I would do is check for any PPC applications. If you have any, then uninstall them. Check each application for complete removal instructions.
You might also use an application such as ONYX to caches, etc. Repair permissions. Just to get the system as clean as possible.
Once done, you would want to make a current backup. Maybe even a second just in case. You can always do a restore if nessary.
You could clone your system to an external drive using either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner. The advantage is that it's bootable. You could then install Lion on either the internal or external drive and make sure it works OK.

  • Preparations for re-install

    Hello all.
I have been experiencing frequent crashes since installing Snow leapord. I had made no preparations when I did this and this is what I suspect is causing my problems. This time I have taken certain precautions. I have de-installed DropBox and Growl both of which integrate with the system software so I am hoping things will go better this time round. I will also run the hardware test again, (it showed no problems the last time I tried it) and verify the disk before starting. I have already tried setting up a new user account and found that the computer still crashed so I don't think the problem is with my user files. I intend on archiving my Mail, Calendar and Adress Book programs because during the last install of Leapard I lost some contacts. Does anyone have any other suggestions for me before I go ahead and do this. The frequent freeze ups occur in any program including the finder and cause a complete freeze with the only redress being to shut the computer down with the power button.
    Thanks,
    Julian

    Try this:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
If you still have a problem then get a lint-free cloth and some rubbing alcohol and clean the DVD to rid it of any dust, dirt, fingerprints, etc. Then try again. If it still fails then you either have a problem with your optical drive or the DVD is defective.

  • Install and Verify throws Expected ';'  for New install

When I install Java it goes through fine, but when I click finish for it to launch the JavaFx install it gives me an error dialog that says:
    "Microsoft JScript compilation error"
    Expected ';'
I press OK and it gives me the dialog error again, after a second OK it goes away.
I went to Java.com to verify install and I get the same thing as this screen shot shows (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dustindamour/3365219657/). I thought it was a corrupt install from the update that took place, so I uninstalled all Java and reinstalled. It still gives me the Error Dialog and in addition it gives me the red x box for applets now.
My main interest is to get this working so that I can go through the new tutorials examples at JavaFx.com.
If anyone can help me resolve this problem I would appreciate it.

  • How to prepare for A3 install? Frozen with trepidation from reading here

I'm mad I bought my A3 so quickly. I have early adopter regret. I tend to jump in early but now that I've been using Aperture for years the stakes are high.
I have been sitting here staring at A3 and drooling about using it for a couple of weeks. The more I read in these posts the more confused I get. I don't understand migrating by project, yet I think that's the only way I'm going to keep my sanity.
First, a description of my set up. I have an early Mac Pro with only 2 GB of RAM. I have all my photos reside on my second 1 TB internal HD (does that make them referenced?) and about 300 GB of free space on my primary drive. My library is about 70,000 photos taking up 286 GB.
I didn't understand the concepts of vaults when I started using A1. I now want everything in one vault but I started out making a few vaults. My first vaults now are ghosted and say they are disconnected even though the external HDs are hooked up. My new 'master' vault only says my library is 225 GB, so I don't know how to account for that discrepancy. What photos are missing? Therefore I have concerns that I'm not completely backed up.
I would LOVE to have a 4-5 external HD RAID system (another concept I don't understand) but I've looked at the prices and I'm not able to spend that kind of money. It sounds wonderful and someday. . .
I don't want a regurgitation of what's already been posted, but given my brief description does anyone have advice to help me build my confidence and accomplish this upgrade.
PS - I am looking forward to using Faces and Places (to a lesser degree) so all the advice about turning off Faces makes me sad. Is there a way to have Faces work project by project instead of running through the whole library? I photograph people a lot so it will take a long time for it to process every photo.

    Hi,
In my case I installed AP3 and honestly no crashes or major issues other than some slowness in AP3 but I see it's been solved with the updates and my workflow maybe helping too.
I run a managed AP3 library on a fast external drive connected via eSATA card to my MBP.
In your case I would say add more RAM (never hurts) although 2GB should be ok for now.
Leave your AP3 Library on the main drive and reference your files that exist on the second internal drive.
When importing, you have a choice as to leave in current location(so referenced)
    or have AP manage library.
As far as the size of your library at 286GB, it my be a good idea to install another internal drive in the Mac Pro.
    So
drive 1) Boot drive with OS and all your apps.
    drive 2) AP3 Library
drive 3) Original RAW files that your AP3 library can reference-as long as you tell AP to reference the files upon import.
eventually maybe a 2 TB external drive (usually made of 2x1TB drives in one enclosure)
and this external can be used to back up your AP3 library on one drive and your original RAW files on the second drive.

I hope this helps but lets see what others may advise.

  • Preparing for dwm install

I am preparing to install dwm.
I uderstand I have to install from source if I want to be able to cutomise the wm.
    From what I have read (for example here: http://www.xsnake.net/howto/dwm/dwm-eng.php) I would do the following;
    Download dwm from their site;
    wget http://dl.suckless.org/dl/dwm/dwm-5.8.2.tar.gz
    cd /path/to/dwm-5.8.2.tar.gz
    tar zxvf dwm-5.8.2.tar.gz
    make clean install (as root)
    cp config.def.h config.h
    tweak config.h then;
    make clean install (as root)
    Is this an accurate summary?

    Don't install it without tweaking:

Because you're not using a package manager and you don't want to clutter your /usr/bin directory, you could try not "installing" it at all.
Just type make not as root, it will put the binary in the current directory (the source directory)
then after you set up your own ~/bin directory (mkdir ~/bin and adjust your PATH variable in .bashrc: PATH=~/bin:$PATH) symlink the binary to a place you can launch it:
    ln -sf $PWD/dwm ~/bin
You could even forgo those last two steps, and every time you want to run dwm (which is probably only in .xinitrc), just put the source directory and binary name:
    ~/dwm-1.2.3/dwm &

  • My s/n for PC to Mac Upgrade won't work for new install for CS6 on Mac

I bought CS5 in 2011 for PC, then upgraded to CS6 for Mac (HUGE hassle) in 2012.  Trying to install on my new computer, and I can't select CS6 from the list.  The serial number for CS5 don't work (probably because they were for a PC OS), and the upgrade s/n for CS6, says the s/n is valid, but won't let me select CS6 from the list.   This discussion thing is a hassle!!  I've been "discussing" this for 2 days with no luck.  Isn't there someone I can phone?  Help!

  • Question re: Bootable backup disc / preparing for Leopard Install

    Hello,
    I've an iMac G5 :
Model: The one right before an isight camera was added CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.1), CPU Speed: 2 GHz, L2 Cache: 512 KB, Memory: 1.5 GB
I'm trying to figure out if I can make a bootable backup of my Tiger OS before installing Leopard. I have heard that Superduper requires a firewire drive to make a bootable backup, but I have a 500GB USB external drive. Is there a way for me to use my USB external drive to make the bootable backup?
I have already backed up copies of my Home folders on this iomega 500gb usb ext. drive. Maybe, this is all I need to worry about and I should just go ahead and install Leopard?
Any helpful advice greatly appreciated. Thank you for considering my post.

or should I use the apple disc utility?

  • Preparation for Infinity install

    Hi All,
Will be getting Infinity soon & have been reading up on the pre- reqs for installation.
The master socket is in the bedroom, not where I want the hub !
I understand that there is a data extension option to move this up to 30M but this involves tacking cables round the skirting boards - not ideal !
Is it possible to pre-lay cabling ( neatly via the loft etc) to avoid this ? If so what spec cable / connectors should I use ?
As an alternative would a Powerline RJ45 connector between the broadband modem & hub work ?
Also there seems to be a new Home Hub that has the Fibre Modem integrated ? would this make the powerline option not possible?
Sorry for the probably dumb questions but the info online is a little confusing

The master socket is in the bedroom, not where I want the hub ! If you get an Openreach engineer they will either move the socket to where you want it or if you have a phone extension socket they will convert this to become your master socket. If it's a contractor your stuffed. They will generally only put the Homehub next to the master socket.
I understand that there is a data extension option to move this up to 30M but this involves tacking cables round the skirting boards - not ideal !As above and yes it will be round skirting and doors.
Is it possible to pre-lay cabling ( neatly via the loft etc) to avoid this ? If so what spec cable / connectors should I use ? Yes. If you are happy to do that. If you can get Cat5e cable or ADSL cable. Leave the ends unterminated and the engineer will finish them off.
As an alternative would a Powerline RJ45 connector between the broadband modem & hub work ? If you have a separate Openreach modem and Homehub you can move the hub using Cat5e cable or connecting via Powerline adaptors. You might lose some speed if you use Powerline adaptors so make sure you use the fasted you can get or at the very least 200Mbps ones. It might be that you get a Homehub 5 which has an integrated modem so that would not be possible.
Also there seems to be a new Home Hub that has the Fibre Modem integrated ? would this make the powerline option not possible? As above

  • Correctly installed Flash Player 11.5, prompted for new instalation

    Hello everybody,
I have a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and running a IE9, latest Firefox and Google Chrome.
I installed Flash Player 11.5 correctly, checking the version on Adobe.com.
Now, after using Flash Player on Youtube and other websites, I started getting prompted to install Flash Player 11.5.
First I canceled the process, but then the window came up again and I reinstalled the latest Flash Player 11.5.
At the same time, all the websites using this content were still working.
Please tell me what to do, because that Pop-up Window keeps on showing up to tell me to reinstall, while the Flash Player keeps working without any problems.
    Thank you

I'd experienced it on both Mac and Win 7, after second or third installation, it stopped popping up. It must have been a bug.

  • Zen Xtra won't connect for Firmware Install. WMP Rolled back to v

My Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra would not load firmware from it's hard dri've. It only entered into a cycle of displaying the 'Creative' then 'EAX' screens. I Downloaded the latest version of firmware 'ZenXtraP4SAudible_PCFW_LB_2_0_03' and installed it following the instructions on the Creative website.
The install started initially but then failed because either the software installing the firmware, or the zen xtra, locked up. I left it for nearly an hour and had no choice but to cancel and try again.
Since this time I have been unable to load any version of firmware to the zen xtra. The installer says that the zen is not connected even though it is. When I do connect it, the 'autoplay' dialog appear asking me what to do. So, the computer recognises the device as 'NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra' but the firmware installer will not recognise it at all.
I have carried out a 'Reload OS' in preparation for new firmware. I have also carried out a 'Format All' and 'Clean Up' from the Recovery Menu that the zen xtra is now stuck in. All appears to be fine with the Zen's hard dri've as, on completion of the format, the hard dri'ves shows 'Freespace 3833.7MB'.
I have looked on this discussion forum and FAQ and this appears to be a common problem but have found no solutions. I have tried uninstalling Windows Mediaplayer and rolled back to v0 and reinstalling drivers and MediaSource software but problem persists. Please help.

    OK. Sorted it! Try this!
    http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9829
Turns out you have to uninstall Windows Media Player Runtime v as well as WMP itself.
Also, if you have the problem with reduced HDD space because of installing PlayForSure firmware, you could install a bigger hard dri've. They are the generic 2.5 inch hard dri'ves fitted in Laptop Computers! My 40Gb Zex Xtra now has the 80Gb HDD I removed from my VAIO! And it was easier to do on the Zen than it was on the VAIO!
