Preparing for Oracle OCA 11g using an Oracle Express 10g database

As a software application developer, I have been considering Oracle certification for a while to enhance my skill set. Unfortunately I don't have access to a commercial Oracle installation, and would like to use a free version of Oracle Express during my studies. The latest OCA courses largely focus on Oracle 11g, and it would appear that there is no free (Express) 11g database available yet.
Could anyone please advise me whether it would be possible and practical to prepare for the 1Z0-051 Oracle Database 11g: SQL Fundamentals I and 1Z0-052 Oracle Database 11g: Administration I exams using an Oracle Express 10g database instance, while accompanied by the relevant Oracle 11g study material? In other words, is the overlap between Oracle 10g and 11g sufficient that a solid understanding of 10g could allow me to successfully sit the 11g exams? Furthermore, would the Express edition of the database provide sufficient functionality to prepare for the Administration exam?

(http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=41&p_org_id=1080544&lang=US&p_exam_id=1Z0_051 says Exam 051 has been validated against Oracle Database 10g and Oracle Database 11g. Training on either version will be appropriate preparation.).
For 1z0-052 the situation is different. Oracle 10g express edition hides some of the administration tasks ... you really need to be using 11g.
If you dont waht Oracle 11g all over your regular machine then I would typically recommend install Oracle Enterprise Linux either on a spare machine with a dual core or HT processor and with 2GB or more of memory (eg Dell gx280 or better); or using a virtualisation solution on your current machine (ram would need to be 3GB or higher) (eg virtualbox or whatever ... though windows as a guest can have a license issue).

How many airport express can I add to my network for the purpose of using the airport express to send audio signal to different rooms in the house? I'm interested I'm running about six different zones.
What I'm looking to do is to have self powered in ceiling speakers in every room in my house with out having to run wires to every room to carry the audio signal. I would like to use the airport express to do the job of carting the audio signal.
Here's my set up now I have an airport extreme and one airport express that I use to carry audio to one room.

FWIW. I have used up to four AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) for streaming sucessfully in pretty much the way you have described. I didn't have a need to try more so I can't attest that more would or would not work.

  • Which track to take for DBA OCA:    11g     or     12c?

    Hi,
I want to do become an Oracle Database Administrator Certified Associate (OCA).
Which of the 2 options should I take?  11g or 12c?
I am actually a developer (Forms & PL/SQL) trying to become a DBA.
Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks & Regards

I want to do become an Oracle Database Administrator Certified Associate (OCA).
I am actually a developer (Forms & PL/SQL) trying to become a DBA.
Why? How will having an OCA certification bring you closer to your goal?
Which of the 2 options should I take?  11g or 12c?
    Take the 12c path -
    1. that is where everything 'Oracle' is headed.
    2. companies will be increasingly upgrading/installing 12c as time goes by
    3. people will knowledge about 12c will be more and more in demand as time goes by
    4. people will knowledge about 11c will be less and less sin demand as time goes by
    5. the 12c knowledge you gain will become more and more useful to others (e.g. DBAs and your manager) at your company as they consider when, or if, to upgrade their databases to 12c.
    6. 12c knowledge will likely make you more valuable to your current company even before you get your certification. Managers like people that take the initiative to learn something new especially if that 'something new' is a skill that will be useful to the company.
    7. the exam costs for 12c is the same as for 11g
      For 11g see - http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=458&get_params=p_track_id:Datab11g
      For 12c see - http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=458&get_params=p_track_id:DBOCA12C
    8. you can freely download and install 12c for learning and practice just as you can 11g
The only downside I can think of is that there are fewer people you can turn to for help with any 12c-specific questions or issues you may run into. But there are plenty of books and online tutorials/articles that cover the bulk of those.
    BACK TO THE FUTURE!

  • How to make Oracle Developer Suite use different Oracle client version

    Hello,
    I have installed Oracle Developer Suite 10g (9.0.4) on Win7 32bit
When I run Oracle Forms or Oracle Reports or any DB tool (like SQL Navigator or PL/SQL Developer) and trying to connect to remote Oracle DB 10g (10.2.0.5.0) I get an error ORA-02248: invalid option for ALTER SESSION.
Then I've installed Oracle Instant Client 10.1.0.4.0 and made DB tools use this client and error was gone, but I still get that error using Forms and Reports.
So my qustion is, can I make Oracle Forms and Reports use any other Oracle Client but that was installed with Oracle Developer Suite? Or any other suggestions are welcome how to fix connection issue in Forms and Reports?
I have read many threads and some suggested to set NLS_LANG. Done that, but it didn't help :(

The better question is why are you trying to use an obsolete Oracle product on such a new OS and expecting it to work properly? Are you also using MS Office 95 on this machine? Attempting to hack a solution is fine if you are just learning to use a product or just playing around. However, I would never recommend attempting to do what you are doing.
Oracle Forms 9.x was desupported years ago, long before Windows 7 was released. Trying to use it in this manner is risky at best and not something that should be done in a professional environment. If you are a student or just home user trying to learn on your own, I would recommend that you use a virtualization product like Oracle Virtual Box and create a vm of an older OS. For example XP, then install on that platform. If you are a licensed user of Win 7 Pro or higher, I believe Microsoft is still giving away (for free) "XP Mode". Details here:

  • How To Pass Oracle Procedure Value using Tidal Oracle Database Job Definition to Tidal Variable

how do i pass the parameter value from an oracle database tidal job to a tidal variable? for example i have this oracle db job that is defined to execute an oracle database procedure and i need to pass the parameter value to the tidal variable.
    SQL tab:
    begin
      procedure_get_user_info(<OracleUserVariable.1>);
    end;
    thanks,
    warren

tesmcmd is a binary that sits in your TIDAL master installation bin directory. It takes options, one of which is varset which let's you set variable values.
So you can run a system level script ( a unix example is given below) which can set values for group variables.
Looking at your example you need to find a way to define OracleUserVariable.1
Where does the value for this variable come from?
    Sample variable set script:
    GROUP_FILE_VAR=`echo $2 | sed -e 's/\.xml\.pgp/\.xml/'`
    tesmcmd varset -i $1 -n GROUP_FILE_XML -v $GROUP_FILE_VAR
    XSD_FILE_VAR=`echo $2 | sed -e 's/\.xml\.pgp/\.xsd/'`
    tesmcmd varset -i $1 -n GROUP_FILE_XSD -v $XSD_FILE_VAR
And we call the job using
    setvar.sh <JobID..p> <Group.REQUEST_FILE>
which are overrides from a file event.

  • Best setup for itunes and AppleTV using 1 airport express

    Hi there.
I bought an Airport Express but now I don't know if it's best to create a wireless network or extend an existing one.
I wired my ISP router to the Express but I want to be able to send to Apple TV both video and sound without dropping the quality.
At the moment I have created a new wireless network only being used by my laptop and AppleTV... but every other device at home used the original ISP network/psswd.
What would be the best way to set this?
    Thanks in advance...

Since this Cisco can provide a Wi-Fi network you may not need the AirPort Express at all. If you got the Express because the Apple TV will be some distance from where the Cisco is located with the intent to extend the Cisco's wireless range, it won't work. At least not if you want the connection between routers to be wireless ... and that is because they are incompatible for this purpose.
Since you stated that you have already connected them both by Ethernet, you should configure both of them for a roaming network. This shouldn't require any changes to the Cisco since you also mentioned that you weren't able to.
The Apple TV can then either be connected to the Express' LAN (opposing arrows) port or to it Wi-Fi network. Connecting it by Ethernet should provide better bandwidth.

  • Preparation for Oracle 10g OCA and OCP exams

    Hi all,
I am studying for my first Oracle 10g OCA exam. Thus far, I have the Transcender exam prep software and book from Oracle Press for the OCA/OCP exams with Oracle 10g. With a test Oracle 10g database to practice on while I study, am I on the right path?
    Thanks

Use the http://education.oracle.com OR http://otn.oracle.com as your portal - you'll see the Certification link on either one. From the Certification page you will be able to drill down to the objectives and requirements of the exam. I suggest you use that as a checklist, as the various books and sample exams have been known to include mistakes or miss items.
In addition, you should be familiar with the first few chapters of the Oracle Concepts manual and also, preferably, the first few chapters of the DB Admin Guide - both available from http://tahiti.oracle.com
A great motto while learning is "trust no one - verify everything"

  • Info required : Oracle Clusterware 11g and Veritas (SFRAC) storage

    Hello,
One of my requirement is to Install Oracle clusterware 11g on top of Veritas Cluster. That is because we are using Veritas Storage.
    OS : Solaris 10
Please share any iinformation on this regard.
    Thanks,
    Kam

    Hi Kamalesh,
thanks, sorry, if I was not clear enough in my answer.
The reason, I pointed you to the Veritas documentation, was to say that IF there is a certain patch to be applied dependent of the Veritas SFRAC version you use, either for Oracle or for Veritas, this should be described in the Veritas documentation (as well as the respective certification note(s) provided in My Oracle Support -> Certification, as you can only use a certified combination of SFRAC and Oracle RAC on the same system). The Veritas documentation will also describe the installation and configuration of the stack.
The main issues I have seen with such systems is mainly the configuration: The Veritas SFRAC and Oracle Clusterware need to integrate (the skgxn is the point of integration), which would result in a default misscount for Oracle Clusterware of 600 seconds (instead of the typical 30 seconds in an Oracle Only Stack). You can check the misscount and skgxn used in the cssd log. It will mention so during startup.
If the installation of the two cluster solutions is performed the right way (as described in the documentation linked), then this integration will happen during the installation of Oracle Clusterware, which is important, as it is very hard to enable it later and you will most likely have to re-install Oracle Clusterware. So, preparation is important here.
Once you installed the stack, you should be fine regarding patches, as Oracle would recommend the same patches for such a stack as for any other. Veritas might have additional recommendations, though. The same applies when thinking about rolling patches. Those are probably not possible due to dependencies on the underlying vendor cluster solution in such cases (exceptions might apply and you need to ask Veritas). Oracle Clusterware and the rest of the stack would remain to be rolling upgradeable as documented for cases, in which no vendor cluster is used.
As you can see, running such a configuration is more complex. You need to think about two layers and you need to ask two vendors any time you are in doubt of a procedure to be sure again. This may influence the stability of the system. Commonwealth Bank of Australia therefore decided 3 years ago to move away from having Veritas as the underlying cluster solution under Oracle Clusterware and use the Oracle Only Stack.
Now, I know that you have the necessity to use Veritas due to the storage management and other Oracle customers made this point before. However, with Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11g Rel. 2 and the newly introduced ACFS cluster file system, more and more of them realize that Veritas does not provide them with enough benefits to not only pay for something that does not even make the stack easier.
Hope that helps (this time) - at least a bit. Thanks,
    Markus

Oracle Functional Testing’s OpenScript scripting platform has the following system
    requirements:
    ■ Operating System (32-bit and 64-bit versions): Windows XP, Windows Vista,
    Windows 2003, Windows 7, Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2.
    ■ Memory: Minimum 1 GB

OCI type 2 driver XA, and Oracle Thin tyoe 2 XA. Are there any other drivers
that I can use for Oracle 8.1.6? Which driver and which version should I use?
For example, can I use the Oracle 8.1.7 JDBC drivers with the Oracle 8.1.6 server,
or would the Oracle 9i drivers work with the Oracle 8i server? Which drivers
are faster, and which support more features? I assume that I should not use the

    Hi,
I think you can't use the 8.1.6 thin driver for XA, you would have to
use the OCI driver or 2PC-enable your datasource. AFAIK this has been
    changed for 8.1.7
    Check http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs61/////jta/thirdpartytx.html.

I've asked this question before. This is the reply from Joe
    Weinstein:
For reliability and JDBC 2.0 compliance, I recommend the
    Oracle thin driver.
If not that driver, you should verify that a type-2 driver
    actually does
deliver better performance, but then I would not have a
    strong preference
between their type-2 and ours. Theirs may be faster, and JDBC
    2.0 compliant.
Both are succeptible to OCI bugs, some of which only they can
    fix, but we
