"Preparing Library..." stuck when first launching Photos.

Using an external drive for my iPhoto library.  Trying to update and after installing 10.3 Photos is "Preparing Library..." for 4+ hours.  It seems to be stuck at 30%.  What's going on?

Mine didn't "prepare" anything and now I'm trying to figure out if my iPhotos pictures are all lost Hope there's some sort of solution here.

  • When first launching Calendar in Month view, events are missing

On my iPad 1 running iOS 5.0.1, when I launch Calendar in Month view, the entire calendar is blank (no events). I have to either select a different view or create a new event in order for events to show up. This has been the case since upgrading to iOS 5 and also happens on my wife's iPad 2. I have restored both devices multiple times for other issues and the condition remains.

Figured it out - the event has to be marked as full day event in order to be shown in monthly calendar. Disregard my question.

  • LR3 Import dialog - Missing "Show in Library" option when importing existing photos

Please add the option "Show in Library" into the right click menu when attempting to import a photo that already exists in the LR3 catalog. It was a convenient feature in LR2 to jump directly to the existing photo. In LR3 I must cancel the import dialog and search the photo manually.

    Maybe someone has a workaround?
    Thanks

Thanks Sean.  Your reply worked.  I found them in the wrong drive.  Now I'll see if I can fix it.

It was a convenient feature in LR2 to jump directly to the existing photo in the catalog. In LR3 I must cancel the import dialog and search the photo manually which I find a not ideal workflow.

  • Safai crashes when first launched

I am not sure if this is the correct place to put this question, so I apologize in advance if I am not in the right place.
I work for a school district that uses Safari 2.0.4 on eMac’s running 10.4.7 and 10.4.8 and the students use network home folders.
When the students log in and launch Safari, it will immediately crash (Safari crash.log below). It will continue to crash until the student logs out and logs back in. Most of the time it will work fine from there on out, but sometimes it still crashes. In WGM, the Internet preference is set to have Safari as the default browser (FireFox is loaded on the computers also) and the homepage and search page preferences are set.
I have not been able to find any discernable pattern in the crashes. It won’t happen to an entire class, then it will happen on five machines the next class. I have them move to a different machine and it works fine. When the next class comes in and logs into the machines that just crashed, they work fine, but a different three crash when Safari is launched.
I am thought that it might be the cache files and am looking for a way to have them removed automatically when the user quits Safari or logs out, but I am not sure if this is the right path or not.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Same thing here:
We were also having an issue with Safari frequently crashing under our network home directory setup. My solution was to make Camino the default browser. Apple should keep Safari more up-to-date instead of waiting for Leopard to give us Safari v3... see http://webkit.org/ for the latest version of Safari. This may not answer the issue you're having, but it's a quick fix to install Camino with ARD and then in WGM set it as the default browser, enter your desired homepage, and pull Safari out of the dock.

  • Loud noise when iSight launches from iMovie

    Hi everyone,
I just bought a MacBook Pro and when I launch iMovie and slide the little button (scissors to movie camera) to turn on the iSight my MBP makes a loud (EEEEEHHHHHH) sound. When it happens it sounds like my speakers are going to blow. It lasts for about a second or two. Is this a known problem?
The problem doesn't occur when I launch Photo Booth, only iSight.
    I'm current on all updates.
    Steve

    Hello Steve,
    Is this a known problem?
It is not a known problem with iSight. Here are a couple of things you should try.
First, try turning your speakers' volume off before sliding the button. Then turn you sound up gradually, and let us know if the problem still exists.
If you use an external microphone or speakers, you can also try disconnecting them to see wether they might be causing your problem.
Next, try every suggestion re: Built-in iSight in How to Troubleshoot iSight. Be sure to include the checks to determine whether the problem is "application-specific" or "user-specific".
If I am correct that you have already tested both iMovie and Photo Booth, you were wise to test with more than one application. However, Photo Booth does not record sound, so that may be why you are not getting the noise with Photo Booth. Try some other applications that can record sound.
In addition to iMovie, any of the other video or movie clip applications from this list can record both video AND SOUND with your iSight. So can the apps linked in the "iSight as a surveillance or Nanny cam section of that page.
If you have it, QuickTime Pro is an easy one to use with your iSight.
Some clip recording applications, like Gcam, are free.
Others, like WebcamTweaker, offer free demos that you could use to test if they give better results than iMovie.
These tests will let you determine whether your problem is in your iSight itself or is an iMovie problem, and they may help you fix the problem while you are doing the checks.
Please let us know what fixes your problem.
If your problem remains after the tests, please post back what you tried and include any new info that your testing provides.
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • Mac Mail slows other apps when first opened...

When I open Mac Mail on OS 10.4 it seems to hog the process time and other apps are affected. I do have about 7 e-mail accounts that I have connection to, like gmail, office mail, etc.
    Powerbook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It shouldn't hog 100% of the process time but with 7 email accounts and if each account is set up to be automatically checked for new mail, the incoming mail server is checked for each account, the spam filter checks each received message along with any other rules created in Mail including sorting for any Smart Mailboxes. If any of the 7 email accounts is an IMAP type account, all server stored messages/mailboxes are also synchronized with the server so quite a bit of activity is going on with the Mail.app when first launched over and above the activity when launched and running.
Do you quit and re-launch the Mail.app often during a normal work day? I generally keep the Mail.app launched and running 24/7 so I haven't noticed the same.

  • Photos has be Preparing Library for hours and seems stuck...

Launched Photos for first time, chose my iPhoto library and off it went. It's been stuck Preparing Library at 13% for over 8 hours now.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

I just started doing preparing my photos. I have several libraries and backups. One of my libraries was on my computer hard drive and that went relatively quickly, just a few minutes for about 20K of photos. After realizing it's the wrong library, I switched to a library on an external hard drive and now after a few hours it's only at 10%.
My questions to you is, are you importing a library from an external or a native drive?

  • When I launch I photo it wants me to choose a library but it doesn't find one which is impossible, because i still have no storage. before i can clean up i want to back up them. how can i find my library?

When I launch I photo it wants me to choose a library but it doesn't find one which is impossible, because i still have no storage. before i can clean up i want to back up them. how can i find my library?

You may very well have damaged your library - or even your system by not having adaquate storage available
And never select all of the pitcture and move them - that will destroy your library - the iPhotolibrary is a SQLite database and must always be kept intact as a single entity -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • I have a MacBook Pro version 10.7.5 Every time I try to open iphoto I get the warning: "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared. You have opened this photo library with a newer version of iPhoto." How do I do this?

I have a MacBook Pro version 10.7.5 Every time I try to open iphoto I get the warning: "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared. You have opened this photo library with a newer version of iPhoto." How do I do this? I recently bought aperature, and it has been since then that I get this warning.
    Thank you!

No I have not tried those things. I don't even know what that means I suppose I have the newest version of aperature; I just bought it 4 days ago.

  • Photos stalled in preparing library during first use

I am using an early 2009 iMac, 3.06 GHz intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR2 memory and 190 GB free storage.  OS X 10.10.3.  Photos 1.0 is being used for the first time and has been at 71% complete preparing library for several hours.  I presume it has stalled, what should I do?

Is there any CPU activity at all? I'd leave it. You have a relatively slow machine, all things considered. If it hasn't moved any more after a couple days, then consider doing something about it.

  • Stuck Preparing Library

I have been trying to launch the new Photos app with my aperture library but it just says on the 'Preparing Library' screen at 13% complete and not sure what to the issue is?
Initially it didn't find my library as it isn't in the Pictures folder, but another folder in my home directory. I have removed the one it created and re-launched Photos while holding down the Option key and selecting my Aperture library.
I have also restarted and used Disk Utilities to repair my HD and the permissions as apparently there were issues there when I verified disk and verified permissions.
It shouldn't be an iCloud library issue as I am just trying to open it for the first time. Lastly Photos is only using about 0.2% cpu. Library is about 118GB.
The library works fine in Aperture so not sure what else to try to get in to open in Photos... Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

I have also restarted and used Disk Utilities to repair my HD and the permissions as apparently there were issues there when I verified disk and verified permissions.
try to repair and rebuild the Aperture library and the permissions of the library before upgrading it to Photos.
Firmly hold down the key combination ⌥⌘, while double clicking your Aperture Library in the "Pictures" folder to launch into the Aperture Library First Aid Tools. Select "Repair Permissions".
See: Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
If permissions repair does not fix it, try the other first aid options, but make sure, you have a backup copy of your Aperture Library.

What does iTunes have to do with this?   Also more specific information might be helpful.
What system and iPhoto versions are you running?
Where are you being asked to select a library?  What kind of library, iPhoto or iTunes?
What do you see when you first launch iPhoto?
