Preparing Lion for resale.

Everytime I use the Lion recovery disk for a fresh installation it starts off by asking me for my Apple ID which raises my first question: if I sell my macbook to someone else will they not be able to reinstall Lion? Secondly, after the OS has reinstalled and the computer boots up, my original user account still exists and it asks me for my original password! There was no registration page. So secondly, how can I reinstall Lion so that it boots up to a registration page and contains no users??

Try this:
Boot into Recovery (Hold ⌘R on Boot)
Select Disk Utility
Hightlight Macintosh HD
Click Erase
Quit Disk Utility
Select Reinstall OS X

  • What is best way to prepare Pre for resale.

I am selling one of my Pres.  What is the best way to get it ready for resale.  I never 'patched' or 'homebrew' the Pre.  I want to make sure that all personal information is wiped from the phone, including purchased apps.
    Any help is appreciated.
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

Once you're certain that you've copied off all needed information from your Pre, go to Device Info, Reset Options, Full Erase. This will erase everything, including all apps and data and everything on the USB drive partition. If you're particularly worried about getting rid of all personal info, select Secure Full Erase.

  • Preparing Mac for resale

I have purchased a new Mac Mini and I want to sell the old one.  I will migrate the documents I want to bring over and delete all personal documents on the old Mac.  It is running OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) because I use MS Office 2004 and it requires Rosetta to run.  Subsequent versions of Mac OS do not support Rosetta so I plan to resell it with OS 10.6.8 and MS Office and other applications.
After I delete personal documents (including photos, emails, etc.) on the old Mac, is there a way to safely erase the remaining free space?  Also is there a program that I can run tom tell me which applications require Rosetta so that I don't bring them over?    Any other advice on carrying out this transfer would be appreciated.  I have learned that the quickest way to transfer files is via an Ethernet connection between the two machines with the old Mac started as the source disk.

I was just testing a Mac Mini that I bought from eBay and which needed to be returned. The drive was in such bad shape that a one pass zero or secure erase of any kind would never have made it. Instead, since I had no personally identifiable information on that machine, I just deleted the user I had been testing with from Users & Groups (Accounts in Snow Leopard). It came installed with Yosemite, so not sure if this option is available in Snow, but I deleted that user with the option secure delete. It happened almost instantly, so not sure what secure delete for an account actually does, since it would have needed a bit of time at least to write zeros to that account, even with hardly anything there. Plus, although I have Snow, I have never needed to use that option in Snow, if it's even available there.
So a long winded reply to say that I just don't know how secure a "secure" delete of a user account is. I wasn't that bothered because, as I already said, I hadn't put any personally identifiable information on that machine. I did however want to be sure it securely deleted my wireless router password in Keychain. Didn't want to leave that lying around to be recovered, even on a drive that was about to die completely. So I hope it nuked that securely, which shouldn't have taken much time.
Maybe someone else here will know just what a secure delete of an account actually involves. If it does some kind of overwriting with zeros or random zeros and ones, or what the "secure" in secure delete really means. Actually, it's called “Erase home folder securely.”
Apple doesn't provide much more information than this:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/PH10754?locale=en_US
Here, someone is saying it does a 35 pass overwrite.(Makes me wonder then, if when I did it, it really did that). I hope that drive dies completely and very soon.

  • How do I bypass registration info page to get my G5 ready for resale?

After erasing and re-installing orig. OS X I restarted and am asked to fill out registration page info.  I don't want to do this because I am selling it.  Any way to bypass this screen?  Or any other suggestions on how to prepare computer for resale?

No. You shut it down and leave it that way for the next owner.
Here's a rather extensive set of procedures you might have followed:
Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
           A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
           B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
              1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
              2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
              3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
                  side.
              4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
                  sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
                   startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
              1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
              3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
              4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
              5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See What to do with iCloud before selling your computer.
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
         A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
              1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
              2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
              3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              4. Install OS X.
              5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
              6. Shutdown the computer.
         B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
              1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
                  Utilities window appears.
              2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
              3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
              4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
              6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
              7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
              8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.

  • Preparing my comp. for resale. need help.

I have a Fujitsu Media drive and a Matshita DVD R thing on my disk utilities, do I need to erase these also to prepare my computer for resale or just the mac hd?

If you created any additional partitions on the internal drive, you need to erase those as well. The DVD-R is a drive intended for CDs and DVDs; it doesn't contain any data of its own.

  • Restoring a new Air for resale

Hi, this is - sort of - a non-technical question dealing with resale of a Mac Air - and probably any new Mac...Sorry but
not sure where else to put it and wondered if someone can simplify something.
Ok i bought a brand-new (June 2013) Air from a retailer.  I found out a MBPro was better for my professional
needs and wanted to return the Air.  Retailer - i learned - accepts no returns on computers for any reason so i must resell it
    privately.
I did activate the Air - registered it - and updated the OS.  Now i want to clear it out for resale.   I have a buyer for it. Can I,
and how do i restore it to Factory-New condition (the System)... can i "un-register" it - and if so can the person who buys it
from me register it as the owner or is there something else i need to do on my end so it is "clear" for them to register it new
under their name ((so it would be good for the remainder of its original 90-day free Support period among other things)).
Thanks in advance and apologies for any dumb questions in advance... Appreciate any simplified explanation - Can't reach
Apple support today about this and just wanted to try and get it done on Monday so i can ship to new owner.

  • IMovie '11 Unable to prepare project for publishing (~50)

So I've started this problem and as an avid YouTuber I need to produce videos. I've tried clearing the cache, typing in commands on terminal, reducing the size, exporting through all options, restarting and shuting down.
So guys please help me. I've tried everything.
If your wondering what I'm using
    MacBook Pro 15" Retina
    Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
    iMovie '11 9.0.8
    Internal Harddrive (150 gb free)
    No time machine
If Bengt Wärleby then I'm not listing because I don't understand anything.
Thank you and don't post "Duplicate Disscussion" because they don't work.

Hello,  We are having a similar problem running iMovie '09.  We get the exact same error as you reported.
"Unable to prepare project for publishing" The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred (-50)
We have a very similar situation were we have multiple repeated clips.  However, our clips are 2.4 's.  Like you, we took the finished project and started eliminating edits that we thought might be preventing it from exporting. The following actions still would not allow the project to export:
    removing title pages
    removing transitions
    removing imported music from iTunes
removed another clip from another event
    closed all other programs
closed iMovie, powered off computer, opened iMovie, tried to export
reconfirmed the last project exported would still export - it did without issueThe only difference between the project that will export and the one that does not are these short (2.4's) repeating clips
When we create the new project from the recorded event without making any edits (just as recorded), it exports without issue.  We have started the arduous task of adding back in each edit and testing it for export until we determine which edit is causing it to "not export".  This is a very inefficient way of troubleshooting.
This is a science project for my son and we need to be able to save it as a QT or mpeg4 movie so that he can submit it to his teacher for viewing and a grade!
Any ideas from any other users would be greatly appreciated.

  • How can I order OS X v10.7 Lion for two computers? One Macbook and one Imac.

How can I order OS X v10.7 Lion for both my MacBookPro and my Imac?

Install 10.6.8 on one computer to access the App Store, purchase, and download Lion. You can install on all the computers you own. Although you can re-download Lion after you purchase it, you may prefer the following:
    Make Your Own Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that  you can use without having to re-download Lion.

  • "Preparing video for display" ****!! Project get's stuck before opening completely

I've been working in this project for almost two years. Now, I'm doing the subtitles in Final cut from Spanish to English for almost two months now, almost half way through the movie so I get a lot of renders done everyday. Since last Week my projects get stuck at "Preparing video for display". I usually go to the Autosave Vault, for some reason one of the project open, and I start working again from the hour or two of work I lost. But, whenever the projects get's to Autorender, the same message displays again, and the damned beachball appears and all goes to ****. I can't get anywork done, I've lost a lot of hours worth of work and I'm facing a deadline. I've tried trashing the preferences, but nothing. So before I drive my car into a tree i wanted to at least submit the question, to you.
    Clues:
    FCPR0 6.05
    MACBOOK PRO WITH 4GB MEMOMRY
LION BUT RUNNING ON IT WITH SNOWLEOPARD ROSETTA.
    Best to all of you.

My guts are saying that you've a bit of an unstable installation going on, causing the instability... the fix is to perform a clean install and try working with that. You can build a new startup disk on a firewire drive or on another internal drive or partition, leaving your current startup disk alone... safest way to test this hypothesis... I'd also not install Lion if you're going to run FCP 6. Best setup for FCP 6 is likely Leopard or Snow Leopard. In reality it can be argued that the version of FCP that you are running will run the best on the OS it was written for in the first place.  Which, for FCP 6, is likely 10.5.x.
Here's a list of what is known to be a stable setup with every version of FCP: http://www.digitalrebellion.net/blog/posts/recommended_quicktime_and_mac_os_conf igurations_for_final_cut_pro.html

Does anyone recommend a good graphic utility to prepare files for the web?

GraphicConverter as noted by Don, or Photoshop Elements are the favourites. Both will allow comprehensive editing, and save for web facilities including reducing the .jpg quality to shrink file size without making the picture smaller.
There is a free application calld Gimp (open source) but I don't know how good it is or whether it's updated for Lion.

If I upgrade my leopard computer to snow leopard via an old update disc, can I then upgrade to Mountain Lion for the $20 deal?

Yes, provided  your computer meets the system requirements and you have updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.8:
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)

Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
As an alternative to the above you can try using Lion DiskMaker 2.0 that automates the process.

I badly need someone that is an extreme expert on Mac Pro and imovie11 and very good at troubleshooting. I have a critical project to get out and have serious problem. Mac store solutions did not work. Need a Pro that I can hire to come to my office in Raleigh NC.
Cleared the memory space on the drive, cleared the preferences.. critical problem. Love to find someone good to hire in the Raleigh NC area that come over and work on it.

Apple Store advice did not work.

Rocker-65 is correct, large, long and complex projects can have problems resulting in a Error-108. Sometimes cutting a Project up into pieces or just cutting into 2 can help. Easiest way to accomplish the cutting is to create a Duplicate Project. Then just cut Project 1 in half, saving the first part. Duplicate Project gets cut in half and contains the second part.
Then if you want to stitch them back together, export each project individually at 720p. Import each one BACK into a new Event Folder in iMovie and combine then in a new Project, export that.
