Preparing longer clips (interview) for a better overview? – Markers? Subclips? Etc.?

Hello! I am new to PP!
I am working with longer clips of interviews (10-20 min) and I would like to prepare them so I get an overview about the passages of each clip that I might use for a sequence later on. - In FCP I could not only set markers in the source! window but also edit/name/colorize them. So I would name many markers after text passages in a clip in the source window.
In PP this seems to be only possible in the sequence window which is too late for an overview.
Any suggestions? Subclips?
Thank you very much for your help! - Michael

You can subclip for this, but I'm personally not a huge fan of subclips in Premiere, so I usually don't use them. They just act... weird. I guess they are functional, but I usually find that when I attempt to use them, I'm limited and end up having to find work arounds. It's hard to be more specific than that; I was accustomed to subclipping in Avid which works much better.
Despite that glowing review, if you want to subclip, probably the easiest way to do it is to load your source clip into the Source Monitor, mark in and out points, and then hold down Ctrl/Cmd and drag from the Source Monitor back to a bin. This will pop up a dialog letting you name the subclip, and then drop the subclip into the bin. You can continue this way until you've created all your subclips.
As far as markers go, I think you're correct: I don't believe there is a way to add named markers to a clip in the Source Monitor. I'm not positive about this, as I've never tried to do that. As far as I'm aware, the only markers that can be named are sequence markers. You might want to make a feature request here: Adobe - Feature Request/Bug Report Form
My usual method of dealing with long interviews is sort of a hybrid subclipping approach. Basically, I create a sequence for each interview subject, and then either drop the full-length interview clips into that sequence and chunk it up, renaming the segments as I go, or I load into the Source Monitor and do the in-out routine and drop those into the sequence. Maybe it's lazy, but I find myself doing the former more than the latter; it's easy to see where an interview response begins and ends (usually) by looking at the waveform peaks in the audio clip. After I chunk out all the pieces, I just listen to the bite and name the clip instance in a manner that lets me figure out what the content of the bite is quickly. I then have a workspace set up with two Timeline panels, where I can drag a bite I want to use into my working edit. I adopted this approach after I more-or-less got skunked by subclipping, and it's worked well for me. There are obviously a number of ways you can go about this, so just experiment until you find the one that works for you.

  • Preparing my photo library for the beta Photos is taking the better part of a week. Is this normal?

The process of "preparing" my photo library for the beta Photos is taking the better part of a week. Is this normal?  I have around 2000 photos the iPhoto library I am uploading.

How are you preparing the library?  The only thing I would do to prepare for converting to Photos once it's released would be the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - run Option #1, Repair Permissions.
    3 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.
Do this just prior to launching Photos for the first time.

  • Fast-Forward/Skippy Playback for long clips imported to PP

    Hello all.
Normally, I try to avoid help forums, and figure out problems myself, however, this time, I cannot for the life of me understand what is going on. To give you the whole story:
I'm putting together a video for my church. In this video, are clips of short interviews with church members (roughly 15 sec - 1 min long) with 4 2-hour long videos time-lapsed at 7000% each. The videos were shot using a JVC HDD camera, and I had to convert the videos to .AVI from .MOV so PP could use them. After converting all of the files, I checked each one using WMP to make sure it still looked good and wasn't squished or anything. Then, I started by importing the short interviews into PP.
Those came in fine. I was able to take each one, edit it the way I wanted it, and line it up on the timeline with the others. My problems started however with my first 2-hour time-lapse video.
I noticed that before dropping it on the timeline, playback in the 1st monitor was choppy, "fast-forwarded", but the audio was fine. I dropped it into the timeline, and went ahead and unlinked the video and audio to get rid of the audio, but the video itself was still choppy. In fact, the video would only take about 2 minutes to "finish" playing even though it was only 2 minutes into the 2 hour-long clip, and I could see that on the timeline. Since I didn't require editing on these time-lapse clips, and I was just dropping them next to each other, I went ahead and changed the speed to 7000%, and proceeded to do the same for the next 3 long clips. I figured rendering would clear up the problems, but seeing it was going to take 12 or so hours to render, I decided I better try here before I wasted 12 hours only to not have a usable video.
Again, the time-lapse videos do not require editing...I merely need them to play at 7000% speed. However, now, I am having a problem with another clip. This clip is roughly 13 minutes long, and it is giving me the same problems as the 2-hour clips. The video fast-forwards, then freezes, then skips, and the audio is just fine in the background.
I am running Windows Vista 64-bit, a Dual-core processor, 4GBs of RAM, and an NVIDIA 8800gt Superclocked Edition graphics card. Besides the processor being lack-luster, I feel as though my computer is adequate enough to handle what I am doing...so it must be a problem with...well, what -I- am trying to do.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Oh, believe me, I'm not using this camera by choice...I do not have one of my own, and on short notice, this is all I had to work with. After this project, however, the church will be purchasing one of the nice Sony MiniDV cams (I can't remember the "series" number or style, but I used them in high school during film-editing class a few years back...the silver Sony cams with the widescreen lens and more "professional" look...you know, the $3000 ones...). I've already requested, lol...
Anyway, thanks for your help, Mr. Simon. What format do you feel would be suited best for this conversion? I want to keep it around the same file size...maybe from .MOD to .mpg (MPEG2)? I'm already trying that as we speak, but to save me some time...mind recommending a format? This thing has to be exported to a .avi file and on my thumbdrive ready by 7am EST...and it's 9:13pm EST now...

  • Searching for a low-cost plug for doing better slow motion clips.

Where can I find a low-cost or free plug-in for doing better slow motion clips? I produce alot of sports videos and use FCPHD but am looking for better quality. I am not necessarily looking for time-remapping (it confuses the ** out of me). Just want to simply slow down clips and not be as choppy as FCP turns out.
    Thanks for any help!

  • How long will the Photoshop CS6 Beta be active for?

    Hi
I would like to know how long will the Photoshop CS6 Beta be active for. As a VFX Artist I will be testing CS6 in a production environment to improve workflow. Some of the features I want to be able to use won't happen for a few weeks yet as I'm awaiting content. I just basically would like to know that If I install CS6 now, will it expire in a few weeks or on 30 days? If it's very limited, I'd rather wait than have it expire on be before I can test it properly.
    Thanks.

  • Red Raw Source Settings - multiple settings for one long clip?

    Hello everyone,
I have a timeline with red raw material from Red Scarlet 4K. My DOP wants to make some adjustments in the source settings before Grading. I have some long merged clips (with a lot of changes in light etc.) and I have let`s say two different parts of one of the long clips in the timeline, so I tried to make some changes in the source settings for those two clips in the timeline, but the source settings change the master clip and not only the edited clips in the timeline. Is there a way to make adjustments in the source settings separately for every clip in the timeline?
after I open the source settings it won`t show me the part of the clip which I have in the timeline, but the whole clip from the beginning, so I have to search manually where my clip in the timeline begins, so I know how to adjust it. Is there a way that the source settings show me only the part of the clip (or at least an in and out point) I have in the timeline?

In my experience, each .RDC container can only have a single RMD (settings) file associated with it.
To create multiple settings for the same clip, you would have to duplicate the .RDC folder and its contents for each new setting required.
You would then have to replace each use of that file within your sequence, for each new setting required,
i.e. 3 settings would require original plus 2 duplicate .RDC folders, then you'd have to replace each occurrence of that clip with 1 of 3 files that has the proper new setting.
Now, of course, if you're not grading in PrP, I can't say how the color correction software would know which duplicated files or settings to link to.
No, there is currently no way to open the Settings dialog for a .R3D file and have it match frame to a clip in the sequence. Perhaps you could submit a feature request for that option.

Clip for trailer won't load, regardless of the size the error message keeps popping up, "That clip is not long enough. Choose a longer clip for this part of the trailer."

    I got it out!
    Here is how.
None of the Apple-suggested ways worked. However, before totally giving up I started Roxio Popcorn and pressed the big eject button on it. It came out effortlessly!
    So, I thought "Weird..."
I put the CD back in and reproduced my original problem. I got it out just as easily using Roxio Popcorn Eject feature.
So, I then thought "Maybe it is the disk?" There is nothing wrong with the disk as far as I can tell. It is perfectly round, has a smooth label-side surface. It is not even a label, it is a standard software install disk you buy in stores.
I inserted a different disk. The mini mounted it, I browsed it, and then ejected it by dragging it to trash. Worked fine.
I tried a few other disks.
The drive seems to work fine.
Maybe that CD is cursed, I dunno. I tried that disk in my PowerBook and it works fine there.
    Who knows ?
I am still backing up my hard drive as I type this message in case I need to take it to the store.

  • Help with computer setup and PP settings for faster/better previews

I have been using Cyberlink PowerDirector software for video editing.  It is very easy to use and can do quite a bit.  It was also accelerated by Intel HD graphics built into my system, so I could see a lot of my work at a pretty high resolution in real time.
However, I wanted to see what PP was capable of, specifically the Warp Stabilizer.
So I downloaded PP and have been trying to use it, but it was just slow as heck to preview anything (chop stop chop stop...), with render times being insanely long (12 hours for five minutes of footage vs. about 30 minutes with PowerDirector).
Thinking it was a problem with my system and I needed to get a real graphics card, I got an EVGA GTX 670 (FTW) for $400, and popped it in.  I modified the text file so PP would see it as a compatible card, opened up PP and changed the engine to the new card.
Things are faster, but I was expecting a lot more.  Here's what I'm doing:
    1. Shooting Canon 5D mark II (now III) clips 20-60 seconds long, 1080p.
    2. Import to PP and sequence them.
    3. Adding effects:
         A. Top adjustment layer for fast color correction (white balance)
         B. Next adjustment layer: 3-way color, shadow/highlight, unsharp mask, fast blur
         C. Video 1 layer has the clips with warp stabilizer applied to each, and dissolves.
My final output will be 720p.  ( I shoot 1080p so the Warp Stabilizer will have more to work with, and I can crop without feeling like I'm degrading quality).
    My system: i7 2600k, 16GB RAM, GTX 670 graphics, 120GB SSD "Max IOPS", 2TB 7200rpm internal, 2TB 7200rpm external (USB 2.0, backup drive).
I can currently preview at 1/4 res in realtime.  I would really like to be able to get to 1/2 res (of course full would be great).  One thing that worries me is that GPU-Z indicates that my GPU is only running at about 2% while previewing, while CPU usage is at around 50%.  I was under the impression that the Mercury thing would use GPU/CUDA to process previews and effects that are supported (that includes Warp Stabilizer).
I've looked at Sequence Settings and fiddled with Preview File Format and size, but that doesn't seem to do anything.  I'm currently looking around at codecs (Cineform, DNxHD), but don't know if those can help.
What settings should I alter to get better previews?

Well I'm still pretty clueless about this, but for anyone who is looking at this and wondering, here's what I've gleaned:
    1.  After Effects, especially CS6, makes much more and better use of graphics cards than does Premiere Pro.  I'm guessing that PP will, in future versions, make better use of them.  For now, no need to spend more than a couple hundred bucks on one.
    2.  Update the software.  PP and AE both performed substantially better after installing the .01 update from adobe.  After you install the update, be sure to re-do the CUDA hack, if necessary.
    3.  As it stands, money for a PP system is best spent on a processor, as in the newest Intel (currently Ivy Bridge), and overclocked.  This is where performance happens.  I'd say on a 2012 system, 16 GB RAM should be considered a minimum for video editing, and 24 or 32 if you can afford it.  More than that probably won't be utilized.  Hard disks can affect performance, but I don't think it's a bottleneck unless you're doing something that requires VERY fast/large reads and writes (4k source?).  Most people who have high-end editing stations also have a bunch of drives in RAID, but if you look at the performance chart, the SECOND highest scoring tester did not use RAID (though did use a presumably fast and large SSD).
Keep in mind that all of this has to do with RENDER speeds.  I still don't know what the bottleneck is for PREVIEWS, but I'm just going to assume it's the same.

  • FCE capture from my Canon XHA1 captures as one long clip

I've never had this problem capture using FCE before. I'm capturing from a Canon XHA1 and it's capturing the video as one long clip rather than the many short clips I shot. And unlike when you capture DV, you can't use the "DV start/stop Detect option" when the footage is HD..so that's not a solution.
I'm using a new Macbook pro and was wondering if that has anything to do with it given that i"m using the newest OSX as well.
Any ideas? It appeared to do the same thing when I captured into iMovie.
Or or is there a setting on the camera that I've failed to change?

    Dear Phojo1,
I also have a XHA1 and am experiencing the same problem. I was wondering if you shot your footage in HD, and what are your settings on your camera for recording and outputting. The first footage I captured I used hd with 1440x 1080 apple intermediate with 29.97 rate. I had no problem. It captured each clip separately. Now I can only capture with dv/ntsc settings. I'm am trying to see where the problem is. By the way this started happening when I upgraded to 4.01. It also does the same in imovie. Thanks for any information.

  • Is there a way to make a long clip into a short clip without compressing it any further?

Is there a way to make a long clip into a short clip without compressing it any further?
I went through all my old formats (VHS, hi8, miniDV, etc) and captured them. They end up as .mov files. Some of the longer 2hr ones are about 28GB.
If I am making a new project and I want to edit in short clips from several of these longer files, is there a way to save a short clip from an existing file without compressing it any further?
In other words, lets say I have 10 2hr files, but I know I only want 1 minute from each. Is there a way to select the good 1 minute from each .mov file that I want to use and a version of this 1 minute from each in the folder I am working on the project in, without compressing them??? I like to keep all of the content I am working with on a project in its own folder in case the project needs to be moved from one hard drive to the next while I am working on it. I would hate to have to make a folder that is 280GB or more when I only need a minute from each larger file.
I hope I have asked this in a way that is understandable. Maybe there is a term for what I want to do, that I don't know yet that has its own help section too.   Thanks for any assistance

Thanks Jon - That's kind of where I started, but the part of that I need help with on is the second to last step.
"Export using a codec that matches the source material. "
The codec they were captured in is .mov at DV quality, but then after picking .mov, there are so many other options to choose from as far as compression goes from sound quality and settings, to how many passes, etc. I just want the new clip to be of the same quality as the original clip. It looks so complicated and its not clear to me what options to pick to match the original.
Is there a setting or preference that helps you to match the compression settings of the original clip? Or is there  a way to detect the settings of the original clip so I can repeat that in the shortened clip??

  • Clip Art for Pages?

This there "Clip Art" in Pages like there is in MS Word? I would like to put some Christmas Clip Art in some documents that I will be creating. I would like for them to be high resolution so they look good when I print them on high quality paper.
Is there a library of clip art in Pages for me to use?
    Kevin Hawkins

Well, yes and no. There is no formal set of clipart for Pages, but I did do a rather large set of themes for Keynote a while back, and many of the elements were graphic image files which work well with Pages.
It was called the twelve Themes of Christmas, included numerous religious images (some unique images of unglazed nativity figures) and velvet themes (complete with gold cords)
Then there was the Gingerbread theme, complete with numerous candy graphics (including Cookies! And several styles of hard candy)
A few of the other themes were simpler, but the most complex was the Wrapping theme, including riibbons, bows, several styles of wrapping paper and such.
All the themes came with special corners, tops, bottoms and sides that would fit seamlessly for slide-slide transitions (box, slide, etc) All of them work rather well in Pages (they are sized for 1024x768 slides) and are 'good enough' for most projects (the corners could be used with the various pieces to create longer items)
I took them off the market due to the size (300M altogether) and a family emergency that turned up. Since then I have directed most of my energies to Pages.
Would they be appropriate for your uses? I'm unsure of how much interest there would be for such a heavy download.

  • ORA-01461: can bind a LONG value only for insert into a LONG Classic Report

I am trying to create a report but get a ORA-01461: can bind a LONG value only for insert into a LONG column error. I am a fairley new to Apex and my SQL skills are far from expert level. I have 3 groups we will call 'A' 'B' 'C'. 'A' is the best group 'B' is the next best and 'C' is the lowest group. Let say there are 5 people they all want to be in group A but where they are placed is based on their audition score and the users selection.
    Joe score is 50
    Beth 40
    John 30
    Ken 20
    Sally 10
The user selects that he wants 2 people in group 'A' and 1 in group 'B' and 2 in group C. The SQL needs to rank Joe and Beth in Group A. John in group 'B' and Ken and Sally in group 'C'. The user does this type of selection for about 15 different instrument groups to make up group (band) for 'A', 'B', and 'C'.
Here is what I have come up with that gives me the error mention above when creating a report but works in SQL developer. There is probably a far better way to write this than what I have. I am open to suggestions. Band 'A' SQL example is for all instruments. SQL's for 'B' and 'C' are just a samples of the whole thing.

Welcome to the forum: please read the FAQ and forum sticky threads (if you haven't done so already).
When you have a problem you'll get a faster, more effective response by including as much relevant information as possible upfront. This should include:
    <li>Full APEX version
    <li>Full DB/version/edition/host OS
<li>Web server architecture (EPG, OHS or APEX listener/host OS)
    <li>Browser(s) and version(s) used
    <li>Theme
    <li>Template(s)
    <li>Region/item type(s)
With APEX we're also fortunate to have a great resource in apex.oracle.com where we can reproduce and share problems. Reproducing things there is the best way to troubleshoot most issues, especially those relating to layout and visual formatting. If you expect a detailed answer then it's appropriate for you to take on a significant part of the effort by getting as far as possible with an example of the problem on apex.oracle.com before asking for assistance with specific issues, which we can then see at first hand.
You should also always post code wrapped in <tt>\...\</tt> tags.
I am trying to create a reportWhen asking a question about "reports" it's firstly essential to differentiate between standard and interactive reports. Which is it?
but get a ORA-01461: can bind a LONG value only for insert into a LONG column error.Where and when do you get this error? When creating the report? Or running it?
There's also an obvious bug (repeated many times):
    and a.festival_year = ':P6_YEAR'
ORDER BY total, a.ID DESC NULLS LAST)
    WHERE Stu_Rank &lt;= (select hb_piccolo from festival_years
                   where year = ':P6_YEAR')
...<tt>':P6_YEAR'</tt> is a literal string, not a bind variable reference. <tt>':P6_YEAR'</tt> seems an unlikely value for <tt>festival_year</tt> and <tt>year</tt> values. It should be:
    and a.festival_year = :P6_YEAR
ORDER BY total, a.ID DESC NULLS LAST)
    WHERE Stu_Rank &lt;= (select hb_piccolo from festival_years
                   where year = :P6_YEAR)
    ...or even better:
    and a.festival_year = to_number(:P6_YEAR)
ORDER BY total, a.ID DESC NULLS LAST)
    WHERE Stu_Rank &lt;= (select hb_piccolo from festival_years
                   where year = to_number(:P6_YEAR))
...if the <tt>festival_year</tt> and <tt>year</tt> columns are of type NUMBER. There's a possibility that this bug is in fact the source of your error...
Furthermore, this is a long piece of SQL. It may be that APEX can't cope with the length. However it's also very repetitive: we see the same SQL pattern repeated many times and UNIONed together. One way to reduce the length of the query would be to replace some (or all) of those repeating patterns. This will not only make the query more APEX-friendly, but it will probably be more efficient and easier to maintain too.
I recommend that you Re: 2. How do I ask a question on the forums? that will enable others to have a go at this. Reproducing the app on apex.oracle.com and posting guest developer credentials would also be helpful.

I am using final cut express 4. It seems that any clip over a certain length, say 5 min, does not fully transfer! All shorter clips are perfectly fine. Is there some reason why longer clips are not fully transferred? (a half blue circle shows up on the transfer list, indicating that the clip was not fully transferred. When I check in the capture scratch folder, sure enough the whole clip is not there!
Is there some glitch in final cut express that only allows short clips to be transferred in full?

Thanks for the reply. I'll try to answer all the questions (I am a relative novice). Your help is appreciated.
By the way, the other reply I received suggested the following:
In Final Cut Express>System Settings>Scratch Discs make sure the Limit Capture/Export File Segement Size To: is not checked.
I did this and it was already unchecked. So this is not the answer...
The strange thing is, I have been logging and transferring with FCE for 2 yrs without any problems at all with shorter clips, but have come up against the problem with long clips (over 5 or so min)  the whole time. I got around it by simply making sure I stopped recording after less than 5 min while shooting footage. OR if I accidentally got a long clip, I import into imovie and then import into FCE. Not very streamline and I worry about compressions altering quality!
I am now trying to import a 20 min and a 17 min clip and it only transfers around 3 minutes of each, I have re-tried several times and it happens repeatedly. The blue circle in the transfer list shows up as a half blue circle instead of full. Clip cuts off after 3 or so minutes.

  • Media manager shifts timecode on long clip copies

We make sub clips from an hour long show daily, then consolidate these sub clips using media manager to be their own master clips. Then we(theoretically) delete the entire hour show and work only with the clips we want. This has been working great for small clips of a few seconds, but we are finding that longer clips (4-5 minutes) have timecode shifts creating nightmares for our finisher.... big shifts of 20 seconds and more.
Has anyone else had this issue?

You are taking a 720x486 clip, and blowing it up to 6 times the size, and trying to retain some semblance of quality...YES the MM will take 16 hours. It takes time to do this. Want to cut this time? Get an HD capture card and capture the footage via the card, upconverting it as you capture. Then the process is real time.
Top end machine or not, you are asking a lot, and it will take time. This isn't a 10 second or 2 minute clip...it is nearly an hour long.

  • Best practice when dealing with long clips

I have some long clips that I want to use more than once with different in and out points. I know this can't be done so is the best practice to make duplicates of the clips and set different edit points or somehow roughly split the large clip into smaller clips and name them accordingly.

Not certain what you think you can't do. Take a long clip and open it in the Viewer. Set In and Out points. Drop that into the Timeline. Now you can move along in the Viewer clip and set new Ins and Outs and drop that into the Timeline. Clips in the Timeline are created from the Ins and Outs you set in the Viewer.
Is that what you want to do? If it is, I don't where making copies of the clip would work for you
Later, if you want to match up a clip in the Timeline to that master clip, just use Match Clip (find) in the timeline to find where it correaltes to your main clip
You can have FCE automatically create subclips at camera cut points by using DV Stop/Start Detect if that is what you're looking for
