Preparing side edge of book for printing

Hey all,
You know there's books that are thick and have an edge where pages meet. That edge often has the name of book, author, and publisher icon. I'm not sure what that edge is called but if pages are 6 x 9 inches and you have the entire page filled up, where are you supposed to but that edge which might be a half an inch in the indesign document so that a printer knows where to put it?
Thanks for response.

Thanks for response. Where do you get 17.5 from? If total width is 11 and so back is 5.5 and front is 5.5 and spine is .5 isn't that 11.5?
2 x 8.5 = 17, + .5 = 17.5, but the height will be 11, not 8.5.
Covers are usually a separate file for any sort of "plus cover" publication. Either the size will be different, or the stock will be, and that means they run separately on the press. In CS5 it's possible to use the Page tool to make a cover that is part of the same file, using separate pages for back bover, spine, front cover, inside front cover, inside spine and inside back cover, but it will be the rare printer who wants to receive such a file.

I receive an error message when I upload my book for printing. Not sure what the problem is. All my images are jpg and rgb. Could they be too large as it takes about 15minutes to upload to Apple. How do I reduce the size of the image in Aperture?

    Hi Leonie,
    Thanks for your reply.
Error message below. The preview is fine . I can discount the first 2messages as its a new computer so plenty of disk space and upload doesn't seem to be interrupted. I have uploaded to iphoto before. have tried to upload 3times with the same error message. I had to photo my slides with a Kaiser Baas photo maker , which apparently doesn't scan but takes photos in megapixels of the slides. I am wondering now if the format is incompatible though they are jpg files or the colour type wrong. The image files are  around 1-3 mb each and  72 ppi. I think  I will now scan them properly with a scanner to 300dpi anyway to improve quality.
Apple  talks about image files not being too big for uploading but gives no sizing of what too big is?
    Error message
    1. Upload Error. Loss of connection or file corruption during order upload may cause an incomplete order. Resubmitting your order usually resolves this issue.
    2. Low Disk Space. If your computer is running on low disk space, your files may be assembled incorrectly. Create more space by deleting unused files.
    3. Unreadable PDF file or image files. Files are sometimes assembled incorrectly due to CMYK or Grayscale color space. Use the RGB color space for best results.

No.  Apple only keeps the pdf file for a book for 30 days.  Without the library and book project you won't be able to reorder the same book.

  • Failed to package book for print - now hundreds of links are broken

    Hi,
I have a book document with 32 pages (newspaper) locally on my mac. As I always do after finishing my document, I chose to package the book for print, and save it to CC files server. The packaging process never finished, so after 30 minutes I had to force shut-down on InDesign. When re-opening the book file, I discover that ALL the documents has broken links. Some of the links belongs to the master pages, and most are specific to only this document, and they are located in several different folders on my mac. It will take hours to re-locate all of this links for each page.
I think I have been experiencing this before, but miraculously it all changed back to normal. Now, however, a restart of my mac didm´t do anything.
Why is this happening, and do anyone have a quick solution to fix this?
    Thank u in advance

Are you talking about what I said - "Seems like in the past, I saved a copy of my book, then packaged the copy for print?"
I thought that was the only way around it. I feel certain I will not make this mistake again. Luckily, most printers I work with prefer pdfs. It's just an insane bug. If it's not a bug, it's a major flaw in the program. People do package books. The option wouldn't be in there if we didn't do it sometimes.

  • CS3 - Broken hyperlinks after Package Book For Print

I've posted a similar problem here a few weeks ago, but no answers, so hopefully I can get some help here with a more specific problem description...
I have created a an INDB, including several "chapter" INDD files, linked PNG images and hyperlinks to text and URL anchors throughout. Once I have everything complete, I select all the INDD files and do a "Package Book for Print", making sure the Preflight finds no problems, and then save the packaged INDB folder in a new directory on my local drive.
All works fine in the new INDB, EXCEPT that any hyperlink that points to a text anchor in a different INDD is broken.Apparently, the hyperlink is still pointing to the original INDD's absolute location rather than the new INDD text anchor within my newly packaged INDB. All Hyperlinks that point to a text anchor in the same INDD are fine.
I do not see any option to change this behavior. Strange though, that if I go to edit one of these "broken" hyperlinks, as soon as I choose the correct INDD that it should point to, then it correctly chooses the right link destination automatically in the edit dialog, so obviously it has stored the correct text anchor info, but just loses the document it should point to.
Is there any way to avoid this problem? It is a real pain to keep fixing hyperlinks every time a package my INDBs. I've heard some people use a 3rd party plugin to remedy this and other InDesign link problems (but I forget the plugin name). Suggestions??
    Thanks!

  • Exporting iphoto books for printing at local printing services

Does anybody know how to export an iphoto book for printing at local printing services, other than Apple printing services?
I tried to export, but the only option available was to "export to iDVD", which is not very helpful (does not generate a printable file).
    I'd appreciate any hints...

    Yanomami:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What you want to
do is do a print to pdf. Then take the pdf file to
the printing service to be printed.
Thank you for the tip. One follow up question: does PDF file have the right photo quality/definition to print a book, or would it be better to export to a TIFF file or some other type? If so, how to export to TIFF then?
Thanks again for any help you can offer.

  • HT1040 I have previously submitted a book for printing three different times and Apple has told me it's been unreadable. I have previously previewed it before sending and it was perfect. I have followed all other directions. Help.

I have previously submitted a book for printing three different times and Apple has told me each time it's unreadable. I have previously previewed it each time before sending and it was perfect. I have followed all other directions - updated software, all other applications off etc. What am I doing wrong?

Boot into Safemode and Before ordering your book preview it using this method - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference - the delivered book will match it.

  • IPhoto - uploading photo books for printing

iPhoto crashes when trying to upload a Photobook for printing...driving me mad!
    any ideas follks.
The Photobook assembles, but wont upload.
    Thanks in advance..

This was an excellent suggestion previewing the book at
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 -
and then booting up the computer in safe mode. When I did this I found that several of the fonts had changed and would have ruined the book as they were too big or small or didn't fit the text boxes. I repeated this process until I was satisfied. The pdfs were fine.
Best of all the book was printed exactly as I laid it out.
Apple's turnaround was amazing: just over a week! Really good for getting a book to a small West Coast island in Canada.
Even though Apple's book production is very good it is limited in layouts for each style. BLURB offers a bigger range of layout options as well as a choice of printing papers which is a nice touch. I didn't use them this time because some posters had had delays in getting their books and I had to meet an birthday deadline.
Kudos to Apple for making the book in such a short time.

  • Sending a book for printing from a different computer

    Hi everybody,
I'm an Aperture registered user and I live in Italy. At home, I actually have a quite slow internet connection. On the other hand, my office one is very fast but our lan does not accept a mac so I can't connect my macbook pro. Is it possible to "send" the book from a different computer? I mean, once Aperture have created the pdf-x, is it possible to carry the file from my macbook pro to my office pc and send it to Apple for printing?
    Thank you!

  • Problems uploading book for printing

    Hi,
I am working on a slow connection speed overseas and have been getting continuously disconnected uploading my book to apple for printing in Canada. Does anyone know if it's possible to convert to .pdf and then upload? Or is there any other way to go about it? Thanks.

Thanks. Looks like I'm going to have to poach a fast connection speed from somewhere. I contacted apple through the link provided above and they have said the only way to do it is to upload it through iPhoto. Not particularly helpful.
I'm in South Africa and the Apple store here uses a third party for printing (at outrageous cost!). I'm wanting mine printed in Canada for a gift, which would have been easy without this connection problem. I'm surprised I can't at least mail a disc to someone somehwhere or email a .pdf file... I'm going to ask just to be sure. They respond quickly to these queries, which is great.
Thank you all for your help.

  • Belgium - impossible to upload a book for printing the task never ends

Hello, i want to order a book (75 pages) and i can't upload it on the printer server.
I have restarted my modem, mac pro...
I have let the upload process on for over 2 days and the task is always at 0%.
My internet connection is fully functional i can upload trough ftp software.
Is there any other print service(in europe) that provide same book model than the ones from apple?

I haven't ordered one recently but I have ordered several books over time from Belgium. All have worked perfectly. Being based in Luxembourg we are pushed onto Belgium which then does not recognise the existence of Luxembourg. Nevertheless, we get around it. I am told that the Belgian operation actually works through Netherlands. My preference would be Germany or UK next time I do this, if I can make them work.

  • Aperture 3.4.5 cannot upload book for printing

i'm on MacOSX 10.7 so i cannot upgrade to aperture 3.5 or 3.6. still on 3.4.5 version.
i placed an order for a book, credit card has been charged, but uploading does not end.
checking network connectivity (with all close but aperture) shows no traffic on the network, while there are calls to "printservices.apple.com:http".
printservices.apple.com (17.149.182.20) does not gives me ping, but telnet on port 80 establishes a connection (get request redirects to www.apple.com).
the upload spinning icon is still spinning, when i pause the activity it stops, when i resume it starts to spin again and i see the "printservices.apple.com:http" request for a couple of seconds, but always just 100-200 bytes of network traffic and then nothing.
    1) is print service still active?
    2) is aperture 3.4.5 still supported for book printing?
    3) how can i get back my money if the order does not complete?
    4) is there something i can do to go further with my book printing?
Thank you in advance for any help

    UPDATE #2
After hard time with apple support (i did now know aperture was available for book printing on iphone too... isn't?) tey stated the credit card amount was just booked and not settled. I'll wait to see the release of the payment amount...
Tried again (trusting apple accounting system) to issue a book order: again amount booked on the card, upload started, network monitor activity over 200KB to 1MB. Look nice. After 2 hours upload done and confirmation ok (100 pages book).
    so i can answer myself:
    1) Print service is indeed still active
    2) aperture 3.4.5 is still supported but, vintage Mac are not!  A 2007 iMac is so old that Apple support does not know anymore how can you run 10.7 on them...
    3) seems that the procedure is: place order, book amount, upload data, confirmation, settle amount. Booking should be released in 24/48 Hrs.
    4) just retry for better luck ;-)

  • Designing a book for print

When creating a non-fiction book in InDesign, and submitting it to a offset printer, should the book cover be a part of the main indd file (that has the book pages)  or is a separate file created for the cover?

at times a cover involves setting the magin, spine and bleed which in most case not applied inside i suggest NO!!!
