Preparing to move from OS 10.4.11 to 10.5.6

Hello
Back in July of 2005, I purchased my PowerPC G5 20" iMac, 2.0GHz, +260 GB harddrive and 2 GB of DDR SDRAM.
I have been running OS 10.4.11, however I recently purchased a new version of Leopard OS 10.5.6. Before I use this to upgrade I would like to back up my personal and system files.
So far I have backed up:
- Documents, Movies, Music (iTunes folder)and Pictures folders.
- I have backed up my Safari Favourites: (file > export)
Question: Is there anything else I can backup, because I am looking forward to having Leopard 10.5.6 do this once I have upgraded.
I also have iLife 6, which has been great, however can I still use it when upgrading to OS 10.5.6?
I do have a copy of iLife 09, and look forward to your recommendations on whether I should upgrade when I go to OS 10.5.6?
Many thanks!

What I did (almost the same iMac, see below) was to back up (you did that), verify the hard drive, repair permissions, and then simply install Leopard on top of Tiger. Worked without a hitch.
You will then have to update to 10.5.8 and the latest Safari, plus a variety of other bits and pieces like Java, and you will be good to go. After you have repaired permissions again.
The following advice does not cover upgrading from one OS to another, but updating to a later version, i.e. from 10.5.6 to 10.5.8, but still applies as general advice:
Some general advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

I fixed the problem.. but it was very, very strange. I had a very long section for credits and set the line spacing to 1.0.. for some reason this caused it. I removed it, and it worked fine. I put it back, and I couldn't preview or play the video.
I don't know why that could cause that big of a problem, but it did..

• Inter-Org Mailbox moves from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013

G'Day All,
Is it possible to move Exchange 2007 mailboxes to Exchange 2013 in a different forest? Both environment has all the required patches and service packs.
There is a two way trust, and I don't want to introduce Exchange 2010 CAS in the source forest if I don't need to.
I have read the following article http://msexchangeguru.com/2013/11/03/e2013crossforestmigration/ but it is not clear what is the required to setup in Exchange 2007.  I have read many other articles to do with Exchange 2013 mailbox moves, endpoints,
etc, but non of them is clear of how does it work having Exchange 2007 source.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Atonal,
Could you please take a look at this technet blog that has been well elaborated about your concern :

• Movie from ram

I wrote a little script which plays copies movie into RAM and plays it from.
Requirements:
- packages:
           mplayer
           bar(optional, can be replaced by normal cp command, bar is used only to show progress of coping to RAMfs)
Preparation (replace "USER" with the username which will play the movie):
1. A line in fstab is needed:
none /mnt/ramfs ramfs noauto,user,maxsize=705000 0 0
(size of the ram filesystem is set in maxsize, it would be the maximum file size of a move which you can play)
2. Use visudo to add privilages for the user playing the move:
USER ALL=NOPASSWD:/usr/bin/sdparm --command=stop /dev/sda
USER ALL=NOPASSWD:/bin/chown USER /mnt/ramfs
3. Create a file and paste the source (for example to file mplayerRamFs).
4. Set runnable:
chmod +x mplayerRamFs
Some pros and cons of using this script:
5. Start your favourite terminal program and run:
./mplayerRamFs movieName
(You must specify only the name of the file without the file extension. Only .avi files are supported by this script, but it's not a big problem to change it. It's made so only to support copying subtitles.)
Pro:
+ saves your laptop battery (not yet tested how much saves, but a movie about 1,5h long takes 39% of my battery, using laptop-mode and cpufreqd, I'll write how much it saved after I watch a movie today :D )
Contra:
- needs at least 1GB of RAM
Source:
#!/bin/bash
#set -x
echo Preparin to play movie from RAMfs: $1
if [ "`free -m|awk '/Mem:/ {print $2}'`" -lt "999" ]; then
echo "Not enough RAM!"
echo "At least 1GB is needed!"
exit 1
fi
echo Mounting ramfs..
mount /mnt/ramfs || exit 1
echo Setting permissions...
sudo chown macieks /mnt/ramfs || exit 1
echo Copying movie to RAMfs...
bar -o /mnt/ramfs/"$1.avi" "$1.avi" || exit 1
# if you don't have bar, use cp instead:
#cp "$1.avi" /mnt/ramfs
cp "$1.txt" /mnt/ramfs 2> /dev/null
echo Running mplayer in background...
mplayer -fs -vo sdl "/mnt/ramfs/$1.avi" && umount /mnt/ramfs || umount /mnt/ramfs &
echo Waiting 30 secs to spin down the disk...
sleep 30
# Use here any other method you want (sdparm, hdparm)
sudo sdparm --command=stop /dev/sda
What do you think about this idea? Mayby someone has other better/simplier solution?
PS.
To reduce memory and disk usage, I run startx from console. In /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc I only have twm started.
Also before starting the script it's good to stop all daemons from DAEMON list in rc.conf.
Ofcourse except acpid, cpufreqd, alsa, network, powersaved, laptop-mode (and similar).
Important is to stop syslog-ng, because it's often a reason to spin up the disk.
(I'm thinking of adding a function to stop all the daemons before playing the movie and starting them after that)

nikron wrote:Doesn't it use the same amount of power since you read the entire movie into ram anyway?   Or is reading it all at once better?
Well, that depends. Power efficiency with cdrom drives is in fact a little tricky to calculate. For one you have CBR modes/speed, which means the drive spins the disc at a rate that gives a constant performance and if that matches your movie bitrate, it depends on how much loss the motor etc. produces but generally you could say this is the optimum of efficiency when playing a movie directly from cd. If you can't match it perfectly because your drive doesn't support that particular speed in CBR it's probably a better idea to copy the movie first.
With DVDs though, this has changed a little. Basicly every drive can do DVD 1x where 1x is exactly the speed necessary to play a standard DVD. It's hard to beat the efficiency here. It's probably going to turn out just the same.

• Imovie 11' quits when importing movies from my camcorder

I have a question.  I have imovie 11'...and have made movies with iMovie before, but now that i have upgraded to iMovie 11', its is having troble with the import of the video from the camcorder and i am using a firewire, like i usually do. when I upload movies form my camcorder, iMovie suddenly quits.  it somtimes uploads a few seconds, and other times a couple of minutes.  I have a Macbook, and and Version 10.6.8.  Can somebody help me please, because its taking me forever to upload all the videos.  I have to stop, and delete the ones that had problems while importing, and then start all over again.  Its annoying and very frustrating.
Help me please!!!!!  =)

For what it's worth, I have been having problems importing video from iPhoto to iDVD in the iLife'08 and also could not select video from iPhoto into iMovie '08 for an iDVD project. Apple technician took all my video clips out of iPhoto and put them on desktop. IDVD '08 is filled with problems, including green screens that replace transitions if using iPhoto photos and video to make slideshows. However, I somehow found in my applications file an "IMovie-previous version"('06) and used it to prepare a slideshow from iPhoto, using video clips from desktop, then "shared" to iDVD '08 tp pick a new theme and it burned perfectly.
The iMovie version '06 is so much easier to work with and I can avoid the glitches of iMovie'08 that prevented me from importing video. By preparing movie, you can avoid using the transition window in iDVD'08 -- transitions that don't work. Forums on iDVD are filled with people having the same problem and we hope Apple will find a fix.
If you have'08 and want to revert to '06, there is now an Apple software that will allow you to do that- just offered, to allow people who especially are not interested in YouTube and more interested in sharing with family and friends for TV viewing.

I removed Perian component from QT, started iMovie after I connected the camera...the same.....after 3-5 minutes iMovie crashes....

• What is the simplest way to make a movie from BufferedImages?

I have a 3d rendered animation from which I can grab BufferedImages of each frame. What is the simplest way I can create a movie from these images?
I've seen the JpegImagesToMovie.java file and not only is it suprisingly overcomplicated, it requires me to change the code so that I can get images from memory rather than from files.
Is there some simple way of creating a movie which requires a few statements? I'm also prepared to use QuickTime for Java. I don't care about the format, since I can just use any video converter to convert it to my desired video format.

I recently came up with a simplified JpegImagesToMovie program. It generates QuickTime movies with a single video track output as a file. Input is a series of jpegs (currently as a list of file names, but easily modified to a take any form of jpeg data.) Since the compression used by the movie is JPEG, if you have an uncompressed image buffer, you'll need to convert that into jpeg data bytes with some quality setting. (Since its a movie file, go with something low if you have a lot of similar images.) This will even run without a full install of jmf--no native code is called (as far as I could tell..)
Here is the source code, sorry about the formatting!
import java.awt.Dimension;
import java.io.File;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.io.RandomAccessFile;
import java.net.URL;

import com.sun.media.multiplexer.video.QuicktimeMux;
* This program takes a list of JPEG image files and converts them into a
* QuickTime movie.
* This was based on Sun's JMF Sample Code JpegImagesToMovie.java 1.3 01/03/13
* This code is an attempt to reduce the complexity to demonstrate a very basic
* JPEG file list to movie generator. It does not use a Manager or Processor
* class, so it doesn't need to implement any event listening classes. One
* advantage of this simplified class is that you can just link it with the
* jvm.jar file. (you might also need to track down the com.ms.security library
* stubs, use google. You'll need PermissionID.java and PolicyEngine.java.)
* I tried to get it to generate AVI files without success.
* These output files are could use further compression.
* A Vector of jpeg image paths was one way to do this--the appropriate
* methods can be overwritten to grab images from another source
* --zip file, http, etc.

• Preparing to Move?

Since upgrading to Yosemite I notice that I can't simply move an item(s) from one folder to another without getting a pop-up message saying "preparing to move..." It can be a group of images, text files, application files, or merely one item. The Finder doesn't seem to be able to keep pace with "moving" even when no other task is going on in the background. And this "preparing" takes up to a minute in some situations.
Is there something I can do to avoid this? I have 8G of Ram in my Mac Pro. Is gong to an SSD for my start up disk the only solution (assuming that step wold be a solution)?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

• "Preparing for installation" or "Preparing to move to disk" problem

Hi there,
I'm trying to install Wacom Intuos4 Pen Tablet driver from a .pkg but nothing happens. Stucked at "Preparing for installation" screen. Tried to move the .pkg file to MachintoshHD but stucked again at "Preparing to move to disk" stage. I have a late 2012 iMac with OS X Yosemite. Can you please help me? ^^

I booted the computer from the installation disk and reinstalled, but this time after restart, I get stuck at the blue launchd screen when starting up from the startup disk... I accessed disk utility form the installation disk but it found no problems with the disk...
A safe boot will eventually open the login screen in safe mode although it takes about 5 minutes at the BootX booting screen and login drags pretty bad. After login, I'm stuck with only the standard os x background. To be clear, I've waited around a half hour at least once at each point startup has been stopping.

• Occasional "preparing to move" message in Finder

Dear Hive-Mind,
Occasionally I get a 'preparing to move' message in the Finder (10.9.5 - clean install when I migrated to an SSD on my MacBookPro9.1). I am moving 3-4 small files (less than 1MB each) from one folder to another.
The Finder then takes several seconds to complete this operation and the fans kick in as if the processor is being overloaded. I don't have a lot of stuff going on in the background (Safari, Chrome, Calculator, Acrobat Reader). 8GB of Ram, Mid 2012, 2.6GHz i7 Quad Core, 1TB Samsung 850 EVO.
This happened prior to the SSD upgrade also.
Thanks,
Marco

So it appears that the problem is now solved.
BTW the initial info was incomplete, as I had plugins installed (fogot them as they have become part and parcel of the app!!). The only plugin that survived was Attachment Tamer.
So, I removed attachement tamer and relaunched mail. Tried moving messages around, which worked.
Out of curiosty, I quit mail.app and re-instated Attachement Tamer, relaunched Mail.app: I am still  able to move messages and have the plug in installed!
Go figure

Hi adtsalmon,
You can only watch the movie on the device you rented it on. Here's a snippet from the Apple Support site (italics mine):
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.

Hope this helps!

• How can I get an HD movie from iTunes store to play on original iPad

I recently purchased an HD movie--Brave--from the iTunes store.  I'm trying to play on my original iPad (iPad 1), but iTunes refuses to synch it because it says it is an unsupported format.  The movie is in 1080p format.  I typically get both HD and SD formats when I purchase movies, but iTunes no longer downloads the SD version automatically when I purchase the HD version.  I attempted to get an SD version from the store, but it said I already purchased the movie and instructed me to check the downloads.  There is no SD download pending and a check for new downloads was fruitless.
Can someone confirm that the original iPad is unable to play HD video?  I imagine it is the 1080p that's the problem.  Can anyone confirm that 720p would work?  Is there no longer a means to get both HD and SD when purchasing a movie from the iTunes store?  If there is, how?
Thanks for your help.
Jamie

You can get the SD or 720p version by:
Open iTunes 11
Click iTunes in menu bar > select Preferences...
Click on the Store tab
Change When downloading High Definition videos, prefer dropdown to 720p > click OK
Click on the iTunes Store button
Click Purchased link
Click Movies tab
You should now see a download icon for the movies you already have 1080p version of.
Click on this download icon to download the 720p version.
This will put a 720p version in the same folder on your hard drive as the 1080p version.  If you have iTunes setup to play 1080p when available, it will play the 1080p version.  When you connect your iPad 1, it will sync the 720p version.
Don't forget to change your preference back to 1080p so you can continue to get the higher quality version.
