Prepositioning in WAAS 4.1.1c

I am having trouble with this atm.
I have setup a test share on a remote server, with permissions etc and configured the relevant fields on WAAS GUI under -"File Services,Preposition".
I can broswe and find the directory and schedule the job to run.
The job seems to run ok,but when I go to the remote WAE and look at the Preposition Policy I am seeing no data actually being copied, just the Duration field is incrementing. The throughput field is also blank.
Any ideas?
Regards,
Nick

Can any help with this please?

  • WAAS : File preposition issue

    Hi
I try to preposition some files on a WAVE-474-K9, running the 4.1.3a software version but without success.
In the syslog.txt file I have the following error message "java: %WAAS-CIFSAO-4-131237: (205218) Prepositon ID 1487942 failed, reason: network initialization error, retrying in 30 seconds" but on the WAE manager I have the following status :
In progress and it is running since 22 hours without any bytes copied.
Can someone help me to determine a possible root cause for this syslog error message.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Sébastien.

    Hi Sebastien,
Make sure traffic is being redirected to Data center WAE and that it has CIFS AO Enabled.
If you using WCCP redirect list then make sure you add Branch WAE IP address to the ACL.
You could also take tcpdump on Data center wae just before starting PP job to make sure traffic is being redirected to wae.
Run 'show accelerator' to make sure CIFS AO is Enabled.
    Hope this helps,
    Best Regards,
    Rahul

  • Cannot get prepositioning to work to one of our WAAS boxes

I get the following error in the syslog when trying to do a preposition job, reloaded the waas, deleted and created another preposition, still get the same error..my other 20 WAAS boxes preposition ok!

If by XI you mean XIR1 version 11.0. Then SSO was broken on the initial release, you need to patch to SPanything meany any available service pack.

  • WAAS not running preposition jobs

I have a NME-WAE-502-K9 in a 2821 router and have it connected via a ipsec VPN tunnel through a ASA5510
    Path to client
    CM - router(3925) - switch (4501 with VLAN) - ASA - router 2821 - wae mondule - user
I can ping from the central manager to the WAE unit
I am getting TFO and DR compression but can not get the unit to complete any preposition jobs.
The will show "in progress 0 bytes" after even 24 hours.
IP insepect WAAS enabled is on the router and the ASA 5510
    MTU is set to 1500
Totaly at a loss as to were to start looking.
    Thanks

When you do prepositioning the Branch WAE acts as the client and goes direct to the server.   As such the Branch WAE IP must be allowed through your Firewall, AND it must get redirected to the Core WAAS accelerator.   Thus, if you are using WCCP to redirect to the Core WAAS device and if you're using a redirect list, make sure to permit the IP of the WAE.
Also you'll want to make sure the server you are trying to preposition from does not have any security restrictions that would prevent the WAE from browsing the directories / copying the files.
Hints to the problem could be found in the errorlog/cifsao-errorlog.current file.
I'd suggest opening a TAC case if the above does not help.

  • Prepositioning Files in Edge WAEs

    Hi Michael and Joe,
I have some question about preposition of files in remote WAEs.  All my WAEs have version 4.1.5f and there is a 274 like CM, a 674 like Central WAE and WAE-502 in 2811 like remote WAEs.  There are 20 remote sites.
    1) What is the total amount of space available in the remote WAEs to preposition of files in the CIFS caché?  I had read that the space in the CIFS caché is used for preposition of files and normal operation indistinctly but when I chequed the space in the GUI of the remote WAE I found that it was much less than the total reserved for obj1 (I have a WAE-502 with 45GB of CIFS caché and I view only 25GB for preposition).
    2) I created a Preposition Directive to test the performance of the feature and I reserved 5% of the Total Cache Volume in the remote WAE for it.  I wanted to transfer an amount of data greater than the space reserved to vies if the remote WAE erased the old file to make space for the new data.  I had read that if there is no enough space in the caché to finish the preposition the remote WAE deletes the old files in a FIFO order to make room for new ones but this didn't work, I'm wrong about this point?
    3) Is there a way to change the values for the variables Cache size high watermark and Cache size low watermark?  I want to set them to a different value but I can't find the place to make the change.
    4) And finally, what are the charts to include in a tipical report to have a brief view of the solution?
Thanks for your time and help,

MH- WAAS does not reserve disk space for PP job.  You can schedule a % of the CIFS disk space for it to use and it will not exceed that amount.

MH- If there is less space available then the configured %, eviction should kick in and start purging older files.  If the rate file incoming is faster then the eviction rate, then the PP task would finish with sime files missing.
    3) Is there a way to change the values for the variables Cache size high watermark and Cache size low watermark?  I want to set them to a different value but I can't find the place to make the change.
    MH- These are fixed values.

  • WAAS PREPOSITIONING DELAY 17 HOURS

I am using WAAS inline infrastructure ( 1 Central Manager and 2 Application 612 ) Inline method with SERVER prepostioning . When I try to schedule the push of proposition in the GUI TAB > CONFIGURE PREPOSITIONING > PREPOSITION STATUS the conter say me that is in Porgress and is take 17 hour to make a prepostion of 10 Mb file !
Is it normal ? Or I do something wrong ?

What is the WAN link b/w and latency you have on that link? What type of file is it (pre-compressed or encrypted or plain text etc)? Just for troubleshooting purpose have you tried transfering that file over that WAN link using regular file transfer using FTP or Windows drag & drop (CIFS based). If so, how long does it take?
Btw, just curious, what version of code you are running on the WAEs and Central manager?

  • WAAS Prepositioning Questions

I have WAAS setup and i'm able to view the cifs shares but when i configure a preposition directive the status says it copied and is successful but 0 bytes have been copied.
The file servers sits at the same location as the core cluster and i've assigned the edge devices to do the caching. The status is below. The cifs directory i'm trying to preposition has about 50 mbs of data.
Is that normal or are there some additional tests i can run to verify the config?
    wae-gresham Thu May 22 13:31:20 MST 2008 1.66655 [min] 0.0 [bytes] Completed Finished successfully

    Darren,
Ensure your username has at least read-only permissions for the directory and file listing on your directories.
Do you know if the files that you are attempting to preposition are already cached locally? Is the edge currently serving CIFS content from the cache successfully?
Also, I would check the following settings:
Total Size as % of Cache Volume: Ensure that the cache % is large enough for your files.
Max/Min File Size: Set to value so your files are covered.
Duration: Set to several hours as a test...
    Type: Try "All Files"
Include Sub Directory: Check the box unless you don't want to traverse the directories.
If that all checks out and the files are still not prepositioned, we can look at the logs as well (both WAE and Origin Server).
    Thanks,
    Dan

  • Cisco WAAS Prepositioning 0.0 bytes Copied........ :-(

    Good Evening All,
I am having my first attempt of using the prepositioning function within Cisco WAAS running version 4.1.7a and its not going very well at all.........:-(
We are trying to test a preposition of Microsoft Updates to a selection of Branch WAE devices but the "Amount Copied" is constantly sat on 0.0 bytes and never changes.
Clearly i am doing something wrong and im hoping someone can advise, basically i create the Preposition task via the CM (also running 4.1.7a), i see the root folder i need (which has further subfolders benieth it) and select the folder, i submit this and it takes this with no problem, i assign the branch WAE's to this and its also submitted and accepted, i select schedule for "Now" and the preposition appears in the statuc tab however no matter how many hours its left it constantly sits at 0.0 Bytes - Clear something is wrong.
Doing a "Sh run" on the branch WAE it sees the preposition task at the end of the config but still nothing. I am assuming this is down to the fact that the Data Centre WAE is not loading the files in the "staging" area, the Data Centre WAE has flows for the chosen Server when you do a "sh stat con" and can ping the server by name and ip address.
Im at a lost of what to check next, we are not running the "legacy" WAFS as we first started running 4.1.3b and recently upgraded to 4.1.7a.
    Can anyone help......??
    Thanks in advance
    Craig

    Hi Mike,
Thanks for your quick reply on this, i have a feeling you may have hit the nail on the head already with your first comment...... Doh.
Ill give you an example of how the branch site is setup:-
e.g. (not actual addressing used but gives you the idea)
    Branch Site
    int vlan 10
    ip address 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.192
    ip wccp 61 redirect in
    int vlan 11
    ip address 10.10.10.65 255.255.255.192
    ip wccp 61 redirect in
    int fa0/1
description *** BRANCH WAE WAAS Device ***
    ip address 1.1.1.5 255.255.255.248
    Int se0/1/0
    172.1.1.1 255.255.255.252
    ip wccp 62 redirect in
    ip wccp 61 redirect-list 161
    ip wccp 62 redirect-list 162
    access-list 161 permit tcp 10.10.10.0 0.0.0.127 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255
    access-list 162 permit tcp 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255 10.10.10.0 0.0.0.127
    Data centre end:-
This access-list is then replicated but in data centre but with the access-list 161 & 162 swapped - the 192.168.1.0 subnet is acting as the Data Centre server subnets.
In the data centre the WAE will have an address of say 172.21.1.5 255.255.255.248.
Is there any risk/implication of including the ip address ranges of the WAE devices themselves? currently we dont do this on any site where we have a WAE device and we are seeing great benefits still but i guess this will explain why the prepositioning is not working as the devices are not matching the ACL and therefore being denied redirection.
    Cheers
    Craig

  • WAAS Preposition test results

I created and prepositioned approximately a 725Mb share. The preposition status reports that the directive took 15 minutes to complete. We then connected to a PC at the remote location and mapped to the share here at corporate. We then copied the files from this share to the desktop and it took about 2 minutes. We then copied these same files from a second non-prepositioned share and the transfer time was about 2-3 minutes. I would have expected the second copy from the non-prepositioned share to be longer. I am taking these results to be that the DRE and CIFS cache are both populated because of the prepositioning. Is this a valid test to compare prepositioning -vs- non-prepositioning? Tonight I am going to update the prepositioing and see what it's reduced time will be with modified copies of the original files. We will then see what the copy results will be tomorrow.
We are trying to establish a base line and extrapolate times and things before we attempt an 80Gb prepositioning. Is there a different approach we should be taking for this test? Do these results seem about normal?
    Brent

    Brent,
How fast is the copy without WAAS?
Start with the basics... Check the speed and duplex on your interfaces and ensure that you don't have any errors or drops. Also, is the File Server using SMB Signing? If it is, then CIFS copies won't use the CIFS AO. You can see the connection as you are copying and can tell if you are using the AO or not via the CLI or the CM GUI. If it's using basic optimization, it's not using the CIFS AO, and thus not using your prepositioning.
I would check and see that you inserted content into the cache via prepositioning (look and see that the disk size increased). Also, validate that the files copied from the server 2nd and 3rd time are either faster or the same.
DRE would have definitely been populated when you did the first prepositioning and/or copy. So the 2nd server copy would have used that for the same files, however the CIFS cache would not have been used. Try clearing the DRE cache and copying from the 2nd server again, that should be MUCH longer.
Hope that gives you some ideas to start with.

  • WAAS Prepositioning and File Share Access

We have WAAS solution in place with HQ based in UK and remote offices globally. One of our sites in Singapore is experiencing slow performance when opening files. From the WCM I can the cache was set to just 5% and I have increased that now to 25% based on some other threads.
How can one verify which files are being cached locally on the WAE, this is my qtn?
any other fine tuning advice would be appreciated. I accept our WAE's could do with a code upgrade.

  • WAAS prepositioning before moving a server

I have a server out on a remote site with a WAFS edge enabled WAE NM in that remote router. I also have a WAFS core endabled WAE in the network core. I would like to preposition files to the edge WAE before I move the server into the core if possible. When I run the preposition jobs it looks like the edge WAE detects a possible network loop and the preposition task fails after about 30 minutes. Either way it looks like the file (probably compressed and optimised via DRE) is copied over the WAN anyway. Is there an easy and efficient way to preposition files from a server to a WAE in that same site before you shift the server to the network core?
    Thanks in advance,
    Peter

    Zach,
The NMEs are NME-WAE-502-K9 having a gig of memory. I believe this means they can't be a WAFS core (if that is what you were getting at). The log I am looking at is the WAFS Edge log in the web gui for the WAE. The log entries are similar to this:

  • WAAS 4.0.3 Preposition

    Hi all,
I can not browse for directories when I try to preposition files.
The error message is "Could not access cifs://Server_Name"
    Thanks

    Hi
I've deployed in the wild and the only issue I know of is on domain controllers with the digital signing of SMB connections always (I think should be off), this was always the issue wafs as well. I was advised to set the username and password for accessing the server and then you can browse from within the GUI.
Not sure if that helps but we had it working with 4-0-1 ok.

  • WAAS Capacity Planning TFO Connection Reporting?

For WAAS Capacity Planning I'm trying to work out a way to gather WAAS appliance and module TFO connection statistics over time for each device. I'm looking to gather the number of TFO connections at regular intervals to allow us to get an accurate picture of the current WAAS capacity utilisation. The central manager reports a "The TFO accelerator is overloaded (connection limit)" when the maximum TFO connection limit for a devices is exceeded but it does not tell you the number of connections that exceeded the limit on the box.
I've tried using the WAAS Monitoring XML API:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/waas/waas/v421/monitoring/guide/MG_XML_API.html
But it does not allow reporting of this statistic as far as I can work out.
If you run "show stat conn" on a WAAS device it gives you the "Current Active Optimized Flows", but this is the current number of flows and not the maximum number of TFO connections reached since the counters were last cleared?
    Current Active Optimized Flows:                                3258
Current Active Optimized TCP Plus Flows:              812

    Current Active Pass-Through Flows:                          540
    Historical Flows:                                                      532
Does anyone know anyway of anyway to either manually gather this statistic from a WAAS appliance or module? Or poll this statistic from a monitoring system like Solarwinds?

  • Preposition size limit was exceeded

    Hi Everyone,
I have a preposition job that's trying to copy a folder roughly 108GB in size (comprised of subfolders and files).  I have the job running nightly and it always terminates after several hours copying about 27GB of data saying, "Preposition size limit was exceeded."  I understand that we might be running into the reserved cache limit, and I have already set the preposition to use 100% of the cache.
My question is, if this job terminates after copying 27GB of the 108GB, what happens the next time this job starts on the next scheduled iteration the following night.  Right now, it is set to "Files changed since last preposition."  Will the preposition resume where it last Status:Terminated or will it start over since it wasn't Status:Complete task (ie. I'll never copy the full 108 GB since it keeps starting over)?

    Hi JP,
I was digging into details and i got this in user guide:
Step 4 Ensure that the Status column shows Completed.
If this column shows a failure, look in the Reason column for an explanation that can help you troubleshoot why the preposition task failed. After resolving the issue, you can schedule the preposition task to run again now, or wait until the scheduled start time and check the status again later
So looking at this explanation it does seem that prepositioning should resume where it actually left off.

In all remote offices are WAEs configured as Edge. Ale WAE are added to domain X.
All prepositions in domain X works fine.
I have created secound CoreCluster for domain Y, added WAE in date center Y as Core and one WAE in remote office as Edge to this CoreCluster, but preposition doesn't work.

    James,
Thanks for the log files.  In the Tx.internal.log file, there is the following entry:
