Prepurchase advice sought for Fivespot

It looks like I'm going to have to do something that twenty+ years of computing experience have made me hate to do: buy a product with many reported problems.
The fivespot.  So far as I can tell, it's my best deal (as a current Verizon customer) for travel within the U.S. and Canada ... and perhaps a trip farther offshore later in the year.
Trouble is, many users are reporting problems. M-a-ny users!
I'm trying to accumulate pre-purchase advice, to limit my grief as much as possible if and when I order the device.
This is how it looks so far:
1)  Expect to use the device tethered only.  I can live with that.
2)  Go into device manager, update the driver software for the wireless adapter.  I just did that.
3)  If necessary, be prepared to enter VZ Access manager and change the 802.11 mode.
4)  If necessary, I might need to change 'Network mode' in VZ Access from global to CDMA.
Can anyone else provide any tips?
I ask because I'd much rather have the troubleshooting information in front of me now than suffer for hours on hold with a tech.

Hello,
I usually do a bit of research (product reviews, customer feedback, online forums, etc.) before making a purchase like this. However, in this case, I kinda bit the bullet, and went into the Verizon store last night, asked a few pointed questions, and left the store within 30 minutes with a installed and setup 5-Spot in my hands.  Charged the 5-spot for approx 5 hrs as recommended when I returned home, and  was online  in the house in no time.  I was impressed.  Did not do much surfing, or downloading because I wanted to conserve the data usage.  Went into email only.  The performance was fine, the browser loaded in good measure (msnbc.com with all the graphics and ads).  I'd say it's equal to if not better to starbucks wifi, but without other users' contention.
The install was done at the Verizon store because I had my MacBook with me--it took approx 15-20 mins. tops including the account and password setup and demo.(no CD to insert).  Just inserted the 5-Spot to the Macbook via the provided USB port, and the computer took care of everything.
My main purpose for this is not to download or stream movies or songs, but as an alternative to a home-based ISP--mainly for email (no text messaging).
Next I will take it out in the 'public' to see how the Verizon wifi Hotspot works--since this connection, and its data usage will not be charged to the account.
One minor problem I have encountered so far is that  the specified url that's supposed to allow me to configure the 5-spot seems to have been taken down by Verizon.  Other than that, it's been seamless so far.
Hey, the device was free--what more do you want?
Good luck!

  • Advice sought for a new PC build

    Hello,
I could use a little advice about an "as silent as silent can be" system that I am trying to put together right now. I plan to build it myself. I have installed / replaced components in PC systems before but it will be the first time I build a PC from scratch.
    Purpose of PC
To blitz anything that CS6 can throw at it right now and still be putting up a respectable fight when CS11 is eventually released. In order of importance, the system needs to excel at:
Video editing and effects using Premiere and AfterEffects
3D animation using Autodesk 3DS Max etc
Multimedia content authoring    (Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, Dreamweaver)
    Music production     (Propellerhead Reason, REAPER)
Internet browsing, emails, iTunes and all other 21st century time-wasting activities.
Before I place any orders, I would appreciate it if you would let me know if you can see anything that I might have forgotten, any potential incompatibility issues or just any terrible decisions that I really need to rethink.
    Components
    Windows Professional  64bit OS
    Do I need Ultimate?
Corsair Obsidian Series 550D Quiet Mid-Tower Case
Is this case cool and quiet. Are there better options than this that don’t look like either a teenage warrior’s wet dream or a hotel minibar?
Corsair Professional Series AX 760 Watt ATX/EPS Fully Modular 80 PLUS Platinum PSU
Honestly I have no idea. I picked it because it is highly rated for efficiency and should go with the case. Are there better options at a similar price point, especially in terms of heat / noise / known reliability issues?
    Intel  Core i7-3930K 6-Core Processor
I am definitely going with this CPU. I think.
Corsair 120mm Hydro Series H80i Digital High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler
I chose this rather than the 100i because it can exhaust out the back of the case. I think this will be a better configuration for the case I have chosen and the location where the PC will live.
Asus P9X79 PRO Motherboard (Socket 2011, Intel X79 chipset)
It has all the features I want except on-board firewire which is not a deal breaker and has had good reviews. Can anyone recommend something better at a similar price point? Is it worth spending more to get a higher specified / workstation grade motherboard?
Asus Nvidia GeForce 2GB GTX 670 DirectCU II Graphics Card
Supposedly one of the quietest GTX670 cards on the market and ought to be fully compatible with the motherboard.
    Pioneer BDR-208DBK 15X SATA Blu-ray writer
    Storage Components
    Corsair Vengeance Vengeance Performance 32GB DDR3 1866MHz CL10 (4 x 8GB) RAM
I am also considering getting 64GB and using 32 – 40GB as a RAM disk. Good idea? No?
Corsair Force Series 3 GT 180GB SSD
    Windows OS, Programs and Pagefile(s).
Corsair Force Series 3 GT 180GB SSD
Caches, Previews, Temporary files for all CS6 programs
4 x WD Caviar Black 1TB in RAID 10 configuration
Media files, project files, exported / rendered files, sample library. Is it worth getting a dedicated RAID controller or should the motherboard be able to handle this without hurting performance elsewhere?
    1 x WD Caviar Black 1TB
    Everything else.
My budget is reasonably flexible but I do not want to waste money on components that offer only minimal performance benefits.  Also, I have no plans at present to get into overclocking etc. Far too scary for a newbie.
If you made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read this and any advice at all would be very much appreciated.

    Hello
I finished my build at the weekend and installed the OS and so far the process has been much better than I could have hoped for. Thank you for all of your help.
The computer is much faster and quieter than any computer I have ever owned before and (touch wood) is a joy to use. The Windows Experience rating is 7.8.
I am still running through checks to make sure everything is OK before installing the rest of the software but I have come across one issue that I think I ought to double check before I get in too deep.
So far I have connected 4 drives to the Intel SATA controller of my ASUS P9X79 Deluxe motherboard set to RAID mode:
Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD    ---- Not in RAID
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD    ---- Not in RAID
    2 x WD Black 500GB SSD in RAID 0
    Pioneer Bluray Re-Writer BDR-208DBK
I have a WD Black 2TB waiting to be added to the system for non performance-critical storage once I am certain that I don't have an issue with set up.
I have 32GB of RAM installed.
I have installed and run the Samsung Magician software and the performance benchmarks for the drives are:
    Seq Read 128K
    Seq Write 128K
    Random Read 4K
    Random Write 4K
    Test Range
    Samsung 840 Pro 128GB
    533
    226
    88655
    4788
    1GB
    Samsung 840 Pro 256GB
    534
    263
    91169
    4956
    1GB
    2 x WD Black RAID 0
    241
    265
    2610
    1462
    100MB
The SSD read speeds look fine  but write speeds seem to be very low to me, certainly much lower than the speeds quoted by Samsung and confirmed in multiple reviews.
Does this look OK to you and if not, do you have any ideas about how I could improve SSD write performance?
So far I have followed the steps in the following guide to SSD/HDD optimization for Windows 7 to no avail (checked for latest firmware and drivers, turned off indexing, disabled hibernation, checked that TRIM is enabled, shrank page file to 4GB on OS drive, changed power options so drives never sleep .... have I missed anything?):
    http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-optimization-guide-for-ssds-hdd s
Finally, does the RAID drive's performance look ok.
I am suspicious that the write performance of the SSDs seems to be pegged to the write performance of the RAID, although that might be just coincidence.
One last thing, and thanks for your patience.
I am tempted to switch back to AHCI mode in the BIOS and re-run the benchmarks to see if the SATA RAID mode is the problem. This won't be too much of a hassle as the system is empty at present.
But if / when I return to  RAID mode, I shouldn't have to do any pre-installing because the RSTe drivers are now already installed and up to date, is this correct?
My apologies if these issues have been covered before in the forum. I have looked but I couldn't find anything specific.
    Regards

  • Upgrade strategy advice sought for Leopard/BootCamp/Parallels

Hello. I have dragged my feel long enough with respect to upgrading from 10.4.11 to Leopard (I bought OS 10.5 when it was first released, but upgrade anxiety prevented me from impulsive early adopter installation).
I would appreciate advice from those with more experience than I about the best method of upgrading, keeping the following goals in mind.
    First, my existing configuration is:
    (1) Mac OS X 10.4.11 on internal GUID partitioned 500GB drive, with identical drive as clone via SuperDuper (160GB used)
    (2) Parallels Desktop 2.5 Build 3214.0 (Windows XP SP2) is installed with an expanding drive option; the image, is winxp.hdd, located in ~/Library/Parallels/winxp/winxp.hdd. Currently 12GB.
    (3) never used Boot Camp before, and don't have a partition for it
    (4) separate 500GB drive for audio/music
    (5) separate 500GB drive for video/movies
    Goals:
    (1) Upgrade to Leopard, with ability to keep my settings, apps, tweaks, prefs, network config, bookmarks, etc. as best as possible without compromising the integrity of the new install
    (2) Create a Boot Camp partition on the main drive (about 120GB or so should be enough)
    (3) Upgrade from Parallels 2.5 to Parallels 3.0 (I will buy the software)
    (4) Migrate my existing Parallels 2.5 Windows XP drive image to the Boot Camp partition, so I can access it either from Boot Camp (natively) or from Parallels (virtual machine)
    (5) Configure clone backups for Mac using SuperDuper (for which I already have a license - for years) and for Windows using Winclone (never tried it) on my current backup 500GB drive
    (6) Configure Time Machine to an external FW800 drive for my Mac partition
I imagine this can be done, but I don't want to screw up on the order of the steps. Advice from anyone having experience with a similar upgrade would be graciously appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Stu

    Thanks again for your input.
The reason I want Boot Camp is in case I want to boot natively into Windows to take advantage of the performance boost. I would use Parallels when I want to use Windows for some quick operations while running OS X. From what I understand, using both Boot Camp and Windows on the same machine doesn't require any additional disk space. I think Parallels can run from an existing Boot Camp partition. That way, for example, you can use Windows from Boot Camp, create a document, and at another time, use Parallels, which will "see" the document created under Boot Camp, and vice versa.
The order in which I upgrade is probably important. For example, I have read that one can partition a disk on the fly under Leopard, but not under TIger. So, I guess I would upgrade from Tiger to Leopard (probably use Archive and Install), then partition my drive to create a Boot Camp partition, then upgrade Parallels from 2.5 to 3, and then somehow move my Parallels data to the Boot Camp partition.
Assuming I get this far, I would then set up backups using SuperDuper for the Mac OS X partition and Winclone for the PC/Boot Camp partition.
This seems like the logical order for these steps, but I imagine it will require more research on my part before taking these steps. I was hoping to get some insights from someone who has already ventured down this path.
    Thank you.

  • Advice sought for formatting external HD

    Hello all,
I'm finally in a position to replace my unsatisfactory backup system (a borrowed communal external HD formatted to FAT32) with my very own external HD. I'm looking for advice since I've never done these things before, and my reading around this forum and others has been very helpful, yet left me with some questions.
    Situation:
I have a new WD 120GB USB 2.0 8MB cache Passport portable HD preformatted to FAT32 and I want to use it primarily to regularly clone my MacBook's 80GB HD using Super Duper to make a bootable backup; as well as to store other media files (which I'll back up seperately elsewhere); and it would also be convenient to be able to use it to share files between my Mac and various PCs as I travel.
    Plan:
I presumed it would be best to create three partitions on the new external HD: one 80GB volume for the bootable clone; one 20-30GB volume for the media file storage; and one 10-20GB volume for the inter-system file-sharing. I would format the first two volumes HFS+ and the third FAT32.
    Questions:
    1. Does this sound like a wise way to proceed?
    2. Can I safely make partitions formatted in different file systems as described (HFS+ and FAT32)?
    3. Is there any degradation of files or other disadvantage to storing and moving files between HFS+ and FAT32 (ie in using FAT32 in general)?
    4. Do I need to make the bootable clone volume a full 80GB, even if I plan never to fill the MB's HD to more than 65GB?
    5. If I do this, would it be better to zero out the entire HD and format the third, FAT32 volume anew from Apple's Disk Utility, or (and would this even be possible?) simply skip the zeroing out of the first two HFS+ volumes--assuming one cannot zero out isolated volumes-- in order to leave the last, FAT32 volume formatted as it came from Western Digital?
    Grateful for any experienced advice,
    Rhys

    Yes! Too much for me.
I've opened Disk Utility, selected the WD external drive (which has 111.8 GB)), selected the GUID partition scheme under "options", selected 3 partitions under "volume scheme", selected Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for the first two volumes and MS-DOS File System for the third, checked that each of the three volumes when selected still appears under "options" as GUID, sized the first volume at 70GB (the MB's drive that I will be cloning is 74.5), the second at 26.79 GB, and the third at 15 GB.
So it looks like GUID partitioning by DU will allow FAT32 (I assume that's what MS-DOS File System is). However, I still haven't pressed the "partition" button yet, so I don't yet know for sure. I'm busy all day today and need the MB to be ready for other things, so I'll try later on, tonight or tomorrow.
If I'm forgetting anything, please let me know, and if anyone already knows whether or not this will work please chime in before I go ahead.
Anyway, thanks for your help, everyone.
    -Rhys

  • Advice sought for clean installation on dual boot iMac

I have an Intel iMac running Leopard and a 40GB dual-boot Vista installation. I am considering upgrading to Snow Leopard. After reading some of these forums, I am fairly certain that I should do a clean install of Snow Leopard.
Is there a FAQ or advice column I can read on how to best proceed?
    Thanks in advance,

if you want to do a clean install it's pretty simple. first back up your data. the best is to make a bootable backup using CCCloner or Superduper. a Time machine backup is ok too.
then boot from the SL install DVD, start disk utility from utilities menu and erase your main hard drive. quit disk utility and proceed with the install.
that's all. of course, if you want some of your old data on the new install you'll have to get it back from the backup afterward. depending on how much of it you want back you can do it manually or import it using Setup Assistant that you get when you first boot up. you can also do it later using Migration Assistant located in /Applications/Utilities.

  • Advice sought for external display for old mac book pro

    Hi Guys,
I've got the older style mac book pro which is about 3 years old. It's 17 inch but I'd like a bigger screen. Unfortunately the Apple display doesnt work with my model as it's the wrong connection - and whilst it looks fab it's too expensive anyway.
I was wondering if anyone could please recommend a good 24" display not made by apple but that would fit my MBP? I'm on a bit of a budget and would rather keep it under £250 if possible.
If there's any that has built in speakers too that would be a bonus!
I've had a look on the web and can see there is a lot of choice - but I would rather go on the opinion of fellow macophiles!
Any recommendations would be gratefully received.
    Cheers :0)

  • Aspect ratio for old full screen games, advice sought on buying new monitor

    Hi.
I'm thinking of buying a ThinkVision LT2252p to replace the old monitor my employer threw out because I've found the old one doesn't offer scaling of the aspect ratio meaning that my golden oldie full-screen-only PC games are all stretched out of shape to fit the entire monitor.
With the LT2252p, will a 1280 × 960 desktop (or a 1024 × 768 fullscreen game...) appear on the monitor with black bars at either side or with a black border all around? (I'm hoping that's what is meant by 'Same Aspect Ratio with input signal'.) Either way is good, just so long as a circle looks like a circle and not an oval.
If it's the case that I'm behind the times and the LT2252p is getting a bit long in the tooth, what would be a suitable alternative for a graphics card with VGA and DVI only?
    Thanks very much,
    Dave

    Hi,
I've been trying to get games to work on my new setup and have problems running games in fullscreen mode.
I can hear the sound of the game, but am unable to see it or, as far as I know, interact with it
Literally using Xmonad for the first time and I experienced some game issues with fullscreen. Specifically when running CS:GO I had a problem where the resolution was native to my monitor (1920x1080) it was running windowed and I couldn't find a way to resize it unless moving it to a blank workspace (so other windows don't infere with the mouse hook) and your then able to drag the window by xmonad commands:
    mod-button1
Set the window to floating mode and move by dragging
    mod-button2
Raise the window to the top of the stack
    mod-button3
Set the window to floating mode and resize by dragging

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I believe the linux native games on steam use the concept of '-windowed' by default.

  • Advice Needed for Coding FCP Plugin's

This will be my first attempt at coding anything for FCP and I am hoping to get some advice on how to proceed and where I can get technical information.
Project 1: Create a plugin to add a selection to the Canvas/Viewer Overlay windows - just under "Show TimeCode Overlays", or there abouts. The option will allow the visual display of the embedded DV Date/Time stamp on the tape, in the same fashion as Time-code is overlaid. As far as I have been able to find, this plugin does not exist yet, so I thought I would give it a shot.
Project 2: Create a plugin to enhance "DV Start/Stop Detect" to label markers with the embedded DV Date/Time code. i.e. Instead of "Segment 1" the marker would be labeled "20070131 19:15:45", assuming of course, a valid date/time existed, otherwise default back to "Segment xx".
But, I guess my first question would be, would these be "legal" projects to pursue. i.e. Is there an API to modify the functionality of FCP in this manner?
I know the DT is available as CatDV has no problem reading it, so I figure FCP should be able to as well.
    I figure I will need:
    1. Info on how the DT is encoded (hex) in the stream
    2. FCP API info
    3. Editing app to put the code together.
    4. Forums that deal with Mac and FCP coding discussions.
    5. Any other advice ANY ONE would like to give.
I have a BSc in Comp Sci and coded on the Main Frame for 15 years, so I have "basic" coding skills, but I have not coded on the Mac yet. I have registered for the FREE Developer Account, but haven't had a chance to explored the service yet.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
ASIDE: I have been editing in FCP since v1 and I shoot events with multiple cameras, sometimes hiring additional cameramen (with their own gear). Because, the events I shoot are usually live "one-of" events like weddings, sports... etc, there is a lot of ON/OFF recording. As such, I find the best way to sync up tapes is to match up Date/Time codes. I accomplish this by playing back the captured video through Firewire back to a Panasonic PV-GS400 which displays the DT on the pop-out display. I then MANUALLY update the previously created "DV Start/Stop Detect" segments with the appropriate DT.
This is a very time consuming process, and if I can get FCP to display the DT directly, it would knock hours off my work flow.
I hope this all makes sense.
FYI I will also be posting this in the 2-pop forums, so if I get any advice there, I will update my post here.
    TIA
    Gary

    Hi Gary
Regarding both your proposed projects afaik there is no API to directly allow you to do this.
However a few options spring to mind: analyzing midi control /mackie control data as provided to a control surface (check out Digital Heaven's BigTime for an idea of how this could work); similarly you could create a virtual DV output device that would appear in the external video outputs list whereby the output video stream would be passed through your code to extract and display the info; perhaps simplest although the least dynamic would be simply to write an FxPlug filter that could be dropped on the clip ... the user could then populate the filter with static display data by manually scavenging the clip for the info with a "button" in your filter (see the options dialog example in the FxPlug SDK)
    Good luck

  • Advice needed for network storage for iMovie files

    Hi
I'm after some advice as to what a good solution for a school is to store iMovie files. I don't have a lot of Mac experience, however do manage the schools PC network and have a pretty good understanding of the general issues.
The schools media suite has 7 Macs (3 reasonable G5's). Because some units are better than others they don't want to assign students to certains PCs (which could allow them to work with files locally).
To date they have been storing all the iMovie files on a old G4 server, however this is running out of space and we want to provide a longer term solution for them.
When I say storing the "movie files" I mean the whole iMovie project -- the project file and all the audio and video clips. These are all stored on the network so the students can open them from any mac. Which has been working (more or less) ok from the old G4 just the disk space is the big issue.
We have tried using a Lacie Raid NAS device for the movie files but this had problems with the Mac extended character set in file names and wouldn't always open or allow saves to the device.
We have also tried using the Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ (using raid) which supports AFP and OS X and seems to work ok and faster in general than the Lacie device. However playback from the Netgear causes the video/audio playback to stop and start. I'm not sure this is the same stutter issue that has been discussed here since if I copy the iMovie file to the local disk it will play back ok. It appears to an issue of bandwidth. The Macs are all 100Mb, the Netgear is 1Gb, which is connected to a Dlink 1Gb switch.
Mostly the students movies are quite short (3-5min) but the project files have lots of clips and range in size from a few Gig to up to around 8Gb.
I can't figure how an old slow G4 can out perform a new 1Gb NAS Raid device.
They are using iMovie06, would upgrading to 08 help?
Any advice would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Simon

    simondg wrote:
... They are using iMovie06, would upgrading to 08 help?
welcome Simon to the  boards ...
definitely NOT.. iM08 has a very different file management concerning projects.. it offers a Library of ALL (=tons of gigs) imports ever ('Events'), and keeps Projects and Events in different locations; to delocate those makes the use of socalled SymLinks neccessairy...
plus, iM08 has high demands on the grafic-card of a Mac, so read the specs carefully before investing...
iMHD6 is a bit 'iffy' concerning drive's format.. as long as you're using 'MacOsFormatted' drives, easy does it ..
so, why not buying an external, firewire-connected housing for 3-4 standard (=cheap) ATA-drives, each 500GB (=cheap), connect that to goo' ol' reliable G4 and done?

  • Advice needed for a mess of ipods

the goal: get all music stored in one place, preferably my new ipod.
    1) i have a third generation ipod which has the bulk of the music i have listened to for the last five years.
that music is in iTunes on a pc laptop that has died. (there's a chance that i can get those files off the dead computer and onto an external drive; still waiting to find out. but all those files are on the ipod anyway.)
    2) I have a new laptop that has new music in iTunes. (Those files are also on an ipod nano.) the new iTunes files on this laptop do not overlap with the first set of files.
    3) i have a new ipod that i want to get everything onto: the old (1st set) files on the old ipod, the new files on my new laptop (& nano), and ... i'd like to convert all of my old cds and get them on the new ipod as well.
    Problems:
    * how do i join the two sets of files (without losing any) if the old ipod won't work with my new laptop b/c the computer doesn't recognize it.
--What's the actual process for getting the files off the old ipod?

Right there are many ways to get your Music off your ipod and on to a computer the best thing to do is to take the files off your ipod and put them on a external disk (like you said) but you need to take it to a computer that recognizes your ipod and then once you have coppied the music across, add it to an external disk.
The best ways to do this is...
    1.(the cost option)
download this program at http://www.findleydesigns.com/ (ipod Access for Windows), the free version copy's five songs at a time to your computer. But the registered version (£14 (not sure in $)) copys all of your music, playlists, videos etc across directly to itunes.
    2. (The Free way) (this is for XP, but i should be the same with vista) (im not really familiar with Vista) but the principles are the same.
You need to be able to view hidden files on your computer , you need to go to the control panel and find folder options. (i believe that you could change the settings on in the windows explorer by clicking view at the top menu bar. you need to click it so that you can see the hidden files. (i think this explains simply what i said Tools -> Folder Options -> View, and then check (enable) the option “Show hidden files and folders.”)
Next find your ipod now if you have enabled hidden files you need to click on your ipod and find a folder called ipod control. the folder itself will look different maybe a bit transparent because it is hidden. Next you will go in and if you explore further you will see loads of files (transparent like ipod control) with things like F34 F01 (or F1) etc.
They are the files with your music on it and if you click on them, they will show music files but they wont have names. they are encrypted with file names like AKLY (basically four letters or 3 letters put together in capitals) so to get the names and other suff back simply drag the music files into itunes or import them individually (the folders) into itunes by clicking file, import into itunes and by folder.
Then once you have done this the names should be correct in Itunes.
*Alternitavely you can drag all the files in 'ipod control' into an external Hard Drive* if you go into itunes prefrences you can let itunes put all your music on your computer into organized files of album names.
    Hope that Helped
    Alex
And sorry the easiest ways to convert the CD's is to import them yourself into itunes Although it may take some time.
If you dont have an external hard drive then burning all your music onto CDs always helps although with a few Gigabytes of music it could take quite a lot of CDs. You might need some blank DVDs to burn on to

  • Advice needed for backup strategy for office

My office is switching from PC to Mac (yay!) and I'm in charge of setting up the system. We'll be using 4 iMacs and a Mac Mini Server with ethernet connections. I'd like to ask what is recommended for backing up these computers.
My thought would be to back up the iMacs separately from the server - is this definitely the way to go?
I'm thinking to get a 3TB Time Capsule for the 4 iMacs so that Time Capsule will do automatic backups.
    - Is it OK to have 4 iMacs backup to one Time Capsule like this?
As for the Mac Mini server, I'm not sure how to best back it up.
Since it has two 1TB drives, I'm thinking of using one drive for data and having it automatically backup to the other internal drive. Any thoughts on this idea?
Or, it is possible to connect an external USB drive to the Time Capsule's USB port, and have Time Machine backup the server to the external drive?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

The TC is really a home solution.
For business I think you should consider something extra.
Although 4 computers and a server is not a big setup, it is worthwhile doing a more professional backup and use something more professional than Time Machine.
    For instance..
    http://www.retrospect.com/au/products/mac
I have not used it.. but I see it recommended in business / larger installs. It is not cheap but well worth considering.
I would not use the internal disk of the server for backup.

You can raid the two disks if you don't need the capacity.
But backup to a USB drive plugged in.. USB3 drives are cheap and speedy. Much more reliable than using network drives.
Raid for integrity of working data.. backup to separate change over disks.
So weekly you change over the USB drive for backup and store the other one at home.

You can do this.. It is fine to have 4 Macs backup to it. But if you are not using the wireless router it is a waste.. you can just backup over network to the server.. TM works fine on network.
You can buy another 3TB USB drive for backup of the clients.. normally though you want all the working data on the server and back that up. You are thinking a more peer to peer model.. once you introduce the server you can work on a more server client model where the current files are held on the server.

  • Advice Needed for Audio and MIDI Controller Software

I am hoping someone may be able to give me advice on how I should approach my problem.
I am currently running a live show with audio backing tracks and a small 12 par lighting system. The light system can be controlled via standard MIDI. I am using iTunes to play back sets of backing tracks, and manually controlling the lighting system using a dedicated foot controller.
What I would like to do, is be able to use software to simultaneously play audio files and perfectly sync the lighting (fades, shots, etc. via midi) with the audio track. Ideally, I would be able to have the audio/lighting paired as discreet entities that could be grouped into sets.
    i.e.
    Audio-MIDI_1 = Audiotrack1 would always be paired with Lightcontroller_MIDI_events1
    Audio-MIDI_2 = Audiotrack2 would always be paired with Lightcontroller_MIDI_events2
    Audio-MIDI_3 = Audiotrack3 would always be paired with Lightcontroller_MIDI_events3
I could the create a set of Audio-MIDI_x tracks which could be triggered in any order.
I would like to have to option to be able to activate a single track, or have a complete group of tracks activated sequentially (but be able to stop the and start the group as needed - you never know what will happen in a live situation). It would be nice to have a time-line UI as well.
Now the final requirement: it should be able to run on a PISMO PowerBook. <cringe>
I hope I am not too confusing.
I am thinking MainStage would not be the software for this task as Leo is not an option for the Powerbook.
I have looked at QLab and showcontrolpro, but I don't think theses are right for me either.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA

    Gary,
With a Pismo you really are confined. I've been using some software from Alien Apparatus called Solo Performer Show Controller (www.alienapparatus.com) and it has a timeline to sequence lights where you can run 32 channels of midi or dmx lighting. The only setback is it needs at least a 1 GHZ processor. There may be a company like Sonnet that has an upgrade for your processor.
The software is able to run backing tracks, send midi controls to effects units or other software, send hotkeys for apps, synchronize lyrics in a window or on an external monitor, controls a dmx fog machine, and also has a six button usb foot controller which can be configured for many things such as scrolling your songlist to select the next song, change volume of tracks, change a light scene, send a hotkey, trigger samples, etc. It is a bit pricey at just under 600 dollars but the foot control is durable, the company has excellent support and they listen to users to add features to the software.
    Hope this helps

  • Advice needed for beginner to Flash website building

    Help!
I have zero knowledge about using Flash.  I am being asked by my boss to build a flash web site for our music and video game stores.  I built our old site in Dreamweaver.
Does anyone have advice on where i should start?  A suggested book that will walk me through beginning to end.  I've worked through a few tutiorials but I feel lost as far at the time line and actions.
Any expert advice is appreciated.  I need to get started in the next month.  I'd like to build it myself instead of outsourcing to someone else.
    Know where I should start?

    Lindsay,
Last month I built my first Flash website after following this tutorial on Lynda.com:
    http://www.lynda.com/home/DisplayCourseN.aspx?lpk2=735
Needless to say the concept behind the tutorial was mind-opening, at least for me: I have a HTML/CSS background and I always used Flash almost only for banners, headers and simple animations.
    Hope this helps...

  • Advice needed for changing code within the Web IC...

    Hi,
I need to change some code within the GET_QUERY_RESULT Method, which is found:
    BSP->Z_CRM_IC
    View->AuiSearch
    Controller class ZL_CRM_IC_AuiSearch_impl
    Method do_handle_event
    Method eh_onsearch
    Method get_query_result
At present the method get_query_result belongs to class CL_CRM_AUI_QUERY_SERVICE.
I can create a subclass from this and call it ZL_CRM_AUI_QUERY_SERVIC, then redefine the method get_query_class, and then make the appropriate changes. But that may be all uneccessary. What I don't know is how to ensure this modified code can be called.
I have already made changes for method DO_INIT_CONTEXT, hence the reason the controller class ZL_CRM_IC_AUISEARCH_IMPL is identified. But this was simple because the view linked directly to this whereas you can see the code I need to change is further down in process chain.
I know that method get_query_result calls a number of BADI's, but these BADI's are too low for the information that I need and therfore really need to make my code changes in the get_query_result method.
I have been reading as much as I can on this subject, but without much success and therefore really count on experienced developers like yourselves to steer me in the right direction, or give advice.
    Jas

I will not suggest to put your Enhancements into CL_CRM_AUI_QUERY_SERVICE.
Rather in  Component BT  -> Class CL_CRM_BTIL .  AUi Query Service will Internally call the BOL Component ( get query result )
In your Framework Profile Config  , you specify the Component Set  . Ex: ALL
Component set have a List of Component Ex BP , BT .
SPRO-> CRM -> CRM Cross Application Components -> Generic Interaction layer -> Basic Settings
Now you can have your Custom , Component Set ( Ex : ZALL ) and Component ( ( Ex ; ZBT , Totally advisable for CIC Development Framework )
Have BT Copied into ZBT and  Specify  ZL_CRM_BTIL (  Inherited from CL_CRM_BTIL )
And in your Custom Component Set , Specify ZBT instead of BT .
Now Specify your Custom Component Set in your Framework Profile .
Now you got the Enhancement Spot in  ZL_CRM_BTIL->GET_QUERY_RESULT
Let me know if it make sense
