Presario CQ57 won't start. BIOS is bad. How fix it

When I turn the laptop on, the screen goes nowhere.  Apparently the BIOS has gone bad.  I don't have a repair disk.  IS there any kind of a CD that I can get that will restore the BIOS?

Many things other than BIOS can cause a no-boot condition.

  • Compaq Presario S4500UK Won't start after wall-socket disconnect. Is this a CMOS battery issue?

Recent software rebuild with additional internal HDD (March 2011) as dual-boot WinXP/Linux setup worked fine.  CD/DVD RW drive started to give cyclic redundancy check errors so replaced drive a week ago.  All still OK.  Change of electricity provided and increased energy usage conciousness switched off machine at the wall overnight after normal shutdown.  Machine would not restart in the morning.  Did not load BIOS; all lights came on briefly and then went dead after 3-4 seconds with power light still on.  One can get a similar effect by plugging the keyboard into the PS2 Mouse Socket as I did once!
After 20 minutes or so trying all sorts of things managed to boot from Linux CD.  Shut down/restarted and all's fine provided I don't switch off at the wall.  Also seems to be OK after brief 5-10 second power off but problem persists with any long disconnection.  It seems that after 10-15 minutes power-on and 2-3 attempts at restarting, the BIOS comes up and all's well, although it has stopped in the middle of a Windows or Linux start-up on one or two occasions.
Am I right in thinking the problem might be the result of a dead CMOS battery?  The reason I ask is that the clock seems to keep time OK and there are no apparent issues with BIOS once it loads.
Any help/guidance would be much appreciated.  Further config info below.

I didn't get any replies so I went ahead with replacing the CMOS battery but that hasn't helped.  The problem is also evident if I power down and leave it for about an hour or more before trying to restart even if I don't disconnect the wall socket.  It seems to take about 15-20 goes at restarting before it fires up.  I would be really grateful for any clues as to what's wrong.

Still no replies to my increasingly ticklish problem so I'll give you the benefit of further investigations in case it prompts some words of wisdom...
So it's not the CMOS battery.  Other symptoms emerge...
    1.    "Crashes" are absolute, immediate and without warning - just like someone turned the lights out.
    2.    "Crashes" also happen occasionally when firing up Truecrypt using the "Auto-Mount Devices" option but thus far have not occured when selecting the required device first.
    3.    The problem appears to be getting worse in that it takes longer to persuade the machine to start from cold.
    4.    If I remove one of the HDDs the machine boots up fine - or it has so far (about 10 times after power disconnect for 1hr or more).
This makes me start to suspect the PSU.  I've done the diagnostic checks on the HP website
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=110&prodSeriesId=...
and it appears that the Power Supply is working just fine but if I remove a device not required at boot-up the thing will fire up first time.  My analysis seems to suggest that the existing PSU (Lite-On PS-5251-08HP) rated at 250W is working at near capacity but it cannot service the peak loads when the HDDs spin up during boot-up.
    Can anyone confirm this, pls?
If this is the case, can anyone suggest a suitable upgrade?  There's loads of product out there with prices ranging from £15 to £150 but as I'm a bit of a numpty and I don't seem to be able to narrow the choice down sensibly.  I've tried going through the info on the HP website and various tech forums/fora without getting very far.  It would be brill if there's someone out there that knows the product and could share their knowledge.
    Tks in anticipation!

  • Compaq Presario A900 won't start

The problem is the blue ring around the AC adapter plug lights up when plugged in, but it blinks non-stop.
    Following the online troubleshooting, I've:
    1. Unplugged AC, removed battery, held power button down to drain system, then reseated the ram (twice).
    2. With the battery still removed, and plugging in the AC, the blue ring lights up and blinks. Pressing the power button does nothing.
    3. With the battery installed, and no AC, the blue lightning bolt icon blinks 4 times when the power button is pressed, but computer does not start.
    4. With the battery installed and plugging in the AC, the blue ring and lightning bolt icon both blink non-stop.  Pressing the power button makes the lightning bolt icon go out, and the blue ring stops blinking for about 3 seconds, then both lights return to their blinking state.
Sometimes, pressing the power button  causes all lights to come on, the fan spin up, then it shuts down - sometimes briefly getting to the opening black/white screen, most time not at all....basically, it shuts down quick.
    Any ideas?

I have exactly the same problem with my Laptop which is a Compaq Presario A962TU, it will boot up normally about 50% of the time. I have upgraded to the latest bios and that made no difference either

  • Aspire V5 Laptop won't start and I can't fix without being an administrator

I did a system restore from a recent restore point.  After rebooting, my laptop started normally, but then a message came up saying "Preparing Automatic Repair."  After a few moments it said "Diagnosing your PC".  Then a blue screen came up saying "Automatic Repair."  There were two options, "Restart" and "Advanced Options".  Restart didn't work (I tried several times), so eventually I tried the Advanced Options. From Advanced Options, I went to "Troubleshoot," and then a different "Advanced options".  From the Advanced Options screen, there were several choices that looked promissing; but almost all of them say I need to be an administrator and won't let me continue.  To start with, I am an Administrator on my machine, but it says it can't find any Administrator accounts.  How can I get past this?  My computer is useless and my only options seem to be refresh or reset.  Why do I have to be an administrator to save my computer?  Please someone tell me there's a way to do a "System Restore," bring up the "Command Prompt," or do "Startup Repair" without being an administrator.  Those are the three options that require me being an Administrator.  I've never had a System Restore fail before and can't believe it did. :-(

Hi SixSigmaGuy, If you were able to do a system restore it should let you do a refresh or reset and "yes" it looks like that will be your only 2 options and at this point if you have everything back up i will go ahead and do a reset to factory default.

  • Iphoto won't start - disk utility can't fix file volume

I've posted my iphoto problems on the iphoto forum and they suggested I post here on the Tiger forum.
It all started when I completed the automatic software upgrade for iphoto and other applications (can't remember which) and when I started iphoto, all my pictures disapeared in front of my eyes. Tried a number of tricks suggested on the iphoto forum and one worked for a while but now iphoto won't even start up.
One suggestion was to fix disk permissions. This did not work and got a message that there was on error in one of the file volumes. When trying to fix that using disk utility, the application can't exit properly and the problem persists. Another suggestion was to use DU from the start up disk and I did that with no results, same problem as before.
HELP! I can't use iphoto and it appears I have something wrong with my hard drive. All other applications appear to work fine and I have all my photos and music backed up on a backup drive.
Do I need to re-install Tiger? Help Please
    Intrepid 007

If you have run Disk Utility and it cannot repair the drive then you have a couple of choices. First, you could purchase a more robust utility such as Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro or Drive Genius. Disk Warrior is an excellent program for repairing the disk directory.
You could do a reinstall, just make sure to backup all of your files first. If it were me I would do a reformat and reinstall rather than an archive and install just to insure that whatever corruption is on your system is gone, but that is me.

  • Apps won't start after latest update?

    Hello,
I'm on an older 2006 iMac (the one without the black border) and I installed the latest update last night. Now I can't get Firefox, Safari, Mail or apps working properly. When I try to start an app it bounces up and down and then I can't remember what it says but it won't start. Any ideas how to fix this? I'm thinking of downloading Firefox and Safari on my sister's computer and then transferring them via my memory stick.
I also tried a restart. Last night I just shut it down and walked away and figured I'd deal with it when I get home from work today.

Hi, first I hope you have your important stuff backed up!!?
I would & always do Repair Permissions Before & after Updates, so I would try the RP ..
Then I would go the SMC route, specific for your model..
If after that you still have "issues" You may need to go the Archive & Install route..

  • Compaq Presario CQ57 Laptop System Bios recovery problem

A customer of mine has a Compaq Presario CQ57 that has developed a BIOS problem.
I am unsure if it had had a BIOS update through HP Support Assistant or if it just decided to start for no reason but it now intermittently decides to recover the System BIOS at start up.
It is all very random. It may not do it for a while - working fine every time it is switched on - but then just decides to go into this recovery. Sometimes the recovery sorts it first time, sometimes it has to go through the recovery mode several times before it sorts it out. Once sorted, Windows and the laptop work fine.
I have tried to remedy it by installing BIOS updates. There are 4 available on the HP website. I have installed all four at various points - sometimes they install, sometimes they fail. Sometimes the recovery mode kicks in straight after - usually after a fail which makes sense. Other times it will work OK for many start ups and then just go back to it's old tricks.
Any suggestions would be very helpful.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello rmaiden,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand your Compaq Presario CQ57-212NR gives you an error after running the system recovery.
Can you tell me if this error loads within Windows or if it prevents you from starting up.
I would suggest you acquire an ISO image of Windows 7 and burn it to a DVD. Use this to install Windows and then run the recovery after. This should remedy the problem.

  • Bios on compaq presario cq57 keeps recovering every time I boot

Relatively new laptop. It is a Compaq Presario CQ57 running windows 7 64 bit. Up untill recently everything was fine but about a week ago it started failing to boot and then after turning it on and off, going into the bios recovery. It goes through this (sometimes more than once) before finally giving a message saying bios recovered, error 500 (and to look here for assistance). The issue seems intermittant. Sometimes it boots fine, other times it takes several attempts with the automated recovery. I think the automatic update for the bios has run once or twice, but I didn't notice any updates immediately prior to this issue starting.
Does anyone have any answers. Thank you.

No ideas anyone? Took me about an hour to get the thing to boot today. Several attempts at turning on and off during which it wouldn't even POST, and then once it did post, the bios recovery system ran through several times before I finally got back into windows.
The exact computer model incidentally is a CQ57-364EA.
I'm trying to figure out if this is a software issue or whether there is a hardware failure somewhere. I'm figuring it's software, because when the computer does finally boot, it works normally.

  • X220 won't start up on battery power after BIOS update 1.24/1.25

This is a really strange issue.
I had been using my laptop with the oriiginal 1.10 (or whatever the very first one was) BIOS until yesterday with no problems. I head that there were some important fixes in the newer BIOS versions so I updated to 1.25. Everything seemed to be working fine until I went to work and turned on my laptop. It kept  crashing before Windows would load (after the post screen but before any of the windows screens. It just stays black for a long time and then flashes a BSOD and restarts). I tried downgrading to BIOS 1.24 but the problem persisted.
It turns out that it does this whenever I try to start the computer without it plugged into the ac adaptor. When it is plugged in it starts up as normal but when unplugged it won't boot into windows. Once Windows is loaded I can unplug it and nothing happens but I still can't restart it without plugging it back in
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is this a known issue? Any suggestions for what could be causing this strange behaviour?
If I can't get it figured out right away I will have to try to downgrade to the original BIOS version.

LOL! I just tried updating to 1.28 BIOS and had forgotten about the problem I had last time (when I tried updating to 1.24/1.25). I was just looking up what to do and came across this thread. I took me way too long to realize I was reading my own post from months ago! Boy am I slow.
I don't know if you are still subscribed to this thread Aamir but a hard reset is when you turn off the computer by holding down the power button until it turns off. Are you (were you) having the same issue with the newer BIOS versions as I am?
I think that the x220 is an amazing laptop spec-wise but are there ever a lot of driver/software problems! I keep trying to use the newer BIOS versions but I always have to revert to the original because Windows 7 won't start if I am on battery power (so basically anytime that I am not at home). I just bought a mSATA SSD (which is why I tried to use the newest firmware, I heard that older ones don't support them) and though the BIOS recongizes it, now Windows won't start if the SSD is installed! There is not much use in having a laptop with lots of ports and expansion options if it doesn't work when you use them!

  • X301 won't start after BIOS update

    Hi all:
Well I've had my new x301 for about 2 months and it's given me nothing but troubles....Recently I found out my laptop won't come back on from hibernation (when you close the screen and open it up). So I downloaded and installed the lastest updates from Lenovo (including the recent BIOS update), restart computer, only to find out it doesn't start up anymore...black screen, thinkadvantage blue botton doesn't light up, no harddrive activity, only light on is battery and power...
I'm thinking maybe something went wrong with the BIOS update. Is there anything I can do to fix it (besides shipping this thing to a repair center which is a big hassle, or paying $200 for an on-site tech that might or might not solve the problem).
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hello all
I just updated my X301 (2776LEG) with the 3.12-1.05 bios. Now my laptop won't start up when running on battery, it powers on for a short while and powers off again. This cycling keeps on going (after 30min I switched it off!) but as soon as i connect the power adapter it boots fine. Seems like this bios update f****ed up the battery power part of the computer....
I tried the bios battery trick but it only worked on the first boot and after that the same problem is present.
I have added 2gigs extra memory and a ultrabay battery and it has been working 100% for about a year now. This error started right after the bios update...
Thought that a reflash of the bios would solve the problem but i cannot reflash the bios with the same bios version...
    Any ideas ?
    Kind regards
    Tommy

I extracted BIOS softpaq sp55553. It is BIOS version F.20. It had the .SIG file inside when extracted using WinZip. You do not need to make a bootable usb flashdrive. Just put the files at the root of a FAT32 formatted usb thumbdrive, plug it into a usb 2.0 port. Hold the Win + B keys down and press the power button. Continue holding the keys down until the notebook reacts. It usually takes a bit longer than 15 seconds to respond and begin the BIOS recovery.
