Presario V5094EA, usb device malfunctioned, unknown usb device

product: presario V5094EA running win XP,
hi am having a roblem with the usb ports on my laptop they were working fine up untill two weeks ago when they just decided to stop working,
now every time i plug something in they first find new hardware then it reports back a device has malfunctioned, unknown usb device, whether its a memory stick or my usb modem
i have formatted the hard drive reinstalled all the drivers from the recovery discs,
i even tried the information in an earlier post about disconnecting the battery for a period which i did for half an hour, but got the same response when i connected it all back up.
am beginning to think this could be hardware related does any one have any ideas before i go buy a new motherboard,
the laptop is about 6 years old now so well out of warranty,
thanks in advance
alan

It should do a progress reading with percentages. If it ran all the way through and did not say anything was corrupt then I am afraid you have a hardware issue going.

  • Presario R4000 USB 2.0 not working

Hi all, sorry if I'm rehashing an old subject but I've not seen anything pertinent to my rig on this forum.
My laptop is an elderly (2005!) Presario R4000 (R4065EA to be precise) and for many a year now it's been giving me USB issues. Anything I plug in gives me the message about "this device can perform faster". I know that when I had the machine from new, the USB 2.0 was fine but since then I've had to perform several clean Windows reinstallations.
I've got all the most recent drivers as far as I can tell. I've scoured the interwebs for chipset drivers but can find nothing more suitable than that offered by HP support. I've also seen posts about the issue of a USB 1.x device setting a computer's hub to run slowly... is there anyway to detect this phenomenon and correct it?
    Thanks in advance

What operating system are you running? Does the device manager indicate that the usb controller is "enhanced"?
The R4000 is an AMD laptop if I recall and is essentially the same as the zv5000 series and uses an nForce chipset from nVidia. I think it is the nForce 3:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce3_winxp_5.11.html
However, Windows itself (I would guess you have XP) provides the usb 2.0 driver and sometimes you have to force the OS to install the driver by uninstalling all usb device drivers, rebooting and letting them reload. That is why it is important to see if the usb controller driver description says "enhanced".

  • Presario CQ61 - Boot Device not found, Hard dis not exist

Hi i bought my presario CQ61-405AX 2nd hand roughly a year ago and it was almost new, my laptop was running fine, and then it froze, and so i had to turn it off, after i waited 30min for it to unfreeze, it now, when i boot it up, appears with a black screen, with the error
    "Boot Device Not Found
Pleae install a operating system on your hard disk
    F2 system diagnostiscs"
I went onto hp support and followed the prompts until it did a hard disk test and the error, "Hard Disk Not Exist" appeared
I have no idea how to fix it, i am running Windows 7 home premium, and i fear i may have to buy another hard drive
    Thank's in advance

    Hi,
The most likely explanation is that your Hard Drive has failed and will need to be replaced, however as a further test, try the following.
    1.  Create a bootable Ubuntu CD - a guide on creating an Ubuntu CD and the download can be found Here.
    2.  When created, follow the guide on the link below to Try Ubuntu.
    http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/try-ubuntu-before-you-install
The 'Try Ubuntu' option runs the OS from the CD without the need to install on your HDD.  If this runs Ok ( it will be slow running from a CD ), this would tend to confirm that the problem is with the HDD.

  • Beep code 1-1-1-1 from Presario V5094EA

My Presario V5000 has given up booting gradually.  Initially I had the occational power-on beep-code indicating RAM problems.  The problem became gradually worse and finally the notebook did not boot.
After cleaning memory contacts and replacing RAM modules the behaviour has changed.  Without any RAM modules I get beep codes 1-3-3-1, which is what I expected.  With any RAM memory module installed (including the ones that played up in the first place) the notebook now beeps 1-1-1-1.
I have seen that with some HP BIOS this means "flashing failed", but what about this Presario?
Where do I go from here?

Pull the cmos battery out for a few hours, put it back in, see if you get a post screen, if you do enter the bios and set date and time.
I did the master reset again but no luck.
I now acquired and installed a refurbished replacement motherboard.  After properly replacing the heat transmission compound at the heat sink the system now boots and is very stable
After the installation I initially had problems with some strange very loud approx 5 Hz feedback oscillations in the right hand speaker, but disassembly and reassembly solved that.
At this stage I have only one problem left:  I cannot activate the radio in the WLAN.  The module is properly detected by Windows, which flags it as working properly.  However, when I try to activate it from the button in the LED panel nothing happens.  I have visually inspected that panel and measured all the lines in the ribbon cable for any discontinuities, but found no fault.  Any ideas?

  • HELP... Ipod not recognized. USB device has "malfunctioned"

I think I've tried everything posted on every discussion thread. When I plug my ipod into my computer, it detects an unknown device. Then I get an error message that says the USB device connected to the computer has "malfunctioned" and needs to be replaced. The device properties say there is no driver installed (i tried updating drivers with no luck)... I am scheduled to go into the store tomorrow to have someone look at it, but if anyone has any suggestions that would save me the $100 to get it fixed or $250 to buy a new one... That would be great.

i had this same scenario. my 60 gb ipod photo would not detect in windows xp either via usb. i'm assuming you have a usb connection and this is my solution based on what you have wrote....... what i did... instead of using a regular usb connector i installed a fire wire pci card and everything is working good now. something in windows xp regarding usb is really annoying!!!! try it

  • "USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices has malfunctioned..."

I'm running Windows XP with external hard drive. When hard drive is connected, iPod will not sync and I get message stating "USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices has malfunctioned..."
When disconnect the external drive, he iPod appears in My Computer. However, iTunes is on external drive; therefore music is not syncing onto iPod. I've attempted the 5 R's as well as searching for iPod in Device Mananger. When iPod is conncected, it is listed in Devce Manage as "Unknown Device."
I've changed drive letters on boh iPod and external drive and get the same message. Please help.

QRe: Zen MX Causes "USB Hardware has Malfunctioned" Msg from Windows XpyUhh, Yes.
I used to same cable to attach my Motorola Razr and the computer correctly found it and identified it as such.
I also tried another cable (brand new) same thing.
I went to recovery mode and did a "CLEAN UP" but no dice.
I also got my I.S. tech guy to look into it and on the USB page it say "UNKNOWN DEVICE"? when he tried to delete it it did not help, it just reappears as "UDVC"? Also in looking into it it seems to have no drivers.
He came to this site and tried to do somethinm through here but it did'nt work.
Now in listening to it last night it began to 'skip' or what I call 'HICCUP" terribly. Where a song starts and stops, during the middle of it. ? It's always done it a little but it has been getting more and more common and now? It's WAY worse about it.
It has never been dropped, or nishandled in any way. I bought the clear hard case to protect it. And only has about 300 songs on it. Never used for anything else. No vids no pics, nothing.

I connected my sons Ipod Touch to my pc and it worked fine. Now, when I try to connect my iPad the following message comes up: One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message.
I checked the cable. It surely is not the cable. If I connect the iPod again it works fine. If I use the same cable with my pc and ipad at work or my other son’s laptop, it is working perfectly. It is only on my laptop where the iPod was connected. Something tells me it got something to do with the drivers that went corrupt or something when I connected the iPod.
I searched the internet and I see a lot of people gets this message. Still no solved answers yet. Is there a place where I can download the drivers again or any other suggestions?

    Kind regards,

I was hoping it would be something like a USB device conflict, but now the shuffle is the only thing connected...

Under Part 9. Verify that USB drivers are installed, did you try the steps in If only "Unknown Device" appears?  That appears to be your situation.
Also, you said that the shuffle initially worked well enough to do a sync, then it had the same problem again.  If you can get it to work again initially, before doing anything else, try the following.  Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  By default, the checkbox for Enable disk use should be unchecked.  If so, check it and Apply the change.  See if that makes any difference.
(If Enable disk use was already checked, try unchecking it and Apply the change.  Basically, set it the "other way" and see if there is any improvement.)
NOTE:  When disk use is enabled, you have to eject the iPod in iTunes before disconnecting it physically.
If the disk use change makes a difference, that may provide a clue about the actual cause.

  • USB Ports - Mass Storage Devices - Unknown Device

    Model: Satellite A135-S2276
    OS: Vista
I recently tried plugging in my media card reader that I've had for several years now and has worked many dozens of times.   Windows responded with an 'Unknown Device'  response.  I thought this was odd, so I changed and tried each USB port.  To no avail the device wasn't recognized.  I tried it in another computer and it worked fine.
I began to try two other mass storage devices that I know used to work, up until recently, on the laptop.  Both now are 'Unknown Devices'.   I now have a strong feeling that someting was wrong with windows vista.  So I search around and find methods to force the driver (inf) cache to reset which should reload any corrupted drivers.   Tried many methods, nothing worked, same results.  I saw that Vista Service Pack 2 just came out, I installed that hoping that it would fix.  Nope.
I gave up on it being a software issue after I did a fresh reinstall of the OS and with the base OS with no other software installed same results.
Is there a way to diagnose if the USB is malfunctioning from a hardware standpoint?  Is it possible the USB, even thought windows recognizes it, is dead on the motherobard?  If so, how do I get this fixed?  Motherboard replacement?
    Help!!

It sounds like it is working enough that it can recognize that soemthign is plugged into it.
You say you did a fresh install of Windows.  Did you use the recovery disk or a retail Windows copy.  If oyu didn't use the recovery disk then maybe you are missing a driver.  Best woudl be to use the recovery disk.  If a USB mouse doesn't work after that then the hardware has an issue.  Assuming the BIOS is OK.

  • G31TM-P21 One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and

Just bought the G31TM-P21 motherboard and installed it with a E3200 proc. Whenever I plug in a USB device in one of the four ports on the back panel I get the message:
"One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message."
After clicking the message I get a window with:
"One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it." with a tree of USB Root Hub (2 ports) with Unused Port and Unknown device under it.
If I go to Device Manager nothing appears to be uninstalled but if I expand the USB I do have a single instance of Unknown Device among the root hub and host controller. I'm running windows XP home 32 SP3.

  • Unknown USB Device when MuVo TX plugged in USB P

The following message came up when I plugged in my MuVo TX in a USB Port
    Using WIndows XP
    USB attached has malfunctioned
    Windows does not recognize it
    Unknown USB Device
Does this mean that I have a faulty player? When I first bought it on January 2 2005
I installed approx 25 songs and it works perfect. Now that I want to change these songs
to new ones, my MuVo TX is not recognized by Windows XP. Tried several other
    computers with same results.
Can any one suggest a fix?
    Thanks

If other PCs are giving the same error, then I think you can be sure the player is at fault somehow.
Have you tried the recovery process? Download the latest driver (if required) and firmware from http://www.nomadworld.com/downloads/drivers. Install the driver file (if required). After you have installed the driver, press and hold the PLAY button, continue holding the button while inserting the player into the USB port for about 0-5 sec. Run the firmware update file and check/tick the 'Format Data Area' check box and click on 'Start'.
If this doesn't help then I think you can be sure the player is faulty.

  • Zen Micro #2 - USB Device Not Recognized / Malfunct

    Hello again, all -
I am now getting the error of "device not recognized" / "device has malfunctioned" when I plug my Zen Micro into my PC (running XP SP2).
This is actually the second Micro that I've had, with the first one returned (through Newegg.com) for exactly the same problem. That first one I actually went as far as wiping off my old OS and re-installing (thinking that I had just hosed up the USB drivers somehow), but I still got the same error.
After replacing the first Micro, I got my new Micro in the mail and it has/had worked beautifully up until today. The only thing I did notice was that it did not seem to like working side-by-side with my Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0, the system apparently confused the two. As soon as I'd plug the player in, the mouse would behave strangely - sporatically moving and then stopping, before just stopping all together. Reverting back to an old PS/2 mouse during times of transfer would solve the problem.
I am now getting exactly the same old malfunctioned/unrecognized error with XP with my Micro. I plug it in, and the "charging" symbol shows up and freezes in the top right corner of the player's screen (it's not flashing as it should be). The player is completely frozen. At the same time, the XP error box pops up in the bottom right corner of the screen.
    Things I've tried:
() Zen Micro disk cleanup - with no effect
    (2) Registry clean up - deleted all instances of my USB mouse, the Zen Micro itself, and all "UNKNOWN" located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet00\Enum\USB - with no effect
    (3) Removed / re-installed the Creative Jukebox Driver (with new June 05 version) - with no effect
I am not about to format my PC all over again since this problem is identical to my previous occurrence on my old player, and I believe it will do nothing.
I have no other PC here at home to test this with on another PC, perhaps I will take it into work with me tomorrow.
USB is a truly crappy protocol, but I'm going to have to put most of the blame on Creative here for what I see as probably the worst technical support I've ever experienced. The lack of support for this product is incredible, with voodoo-like "try this, in this order" suggestions that are nothing other than a shot in the dark by them.
Such a shame - this is a great player when it actually works, but it looks like my players from them might be batting 0 for 2. Definitely will think twice about buying their any of their follow-on products, as yet another "next generation" of players is just around the corner.
Any suggestions as to what I should do? It's looking like a hardware (Micro) failure to me, as upon attempting communication with the PC it immediately freezes (while my other devices work beautifully).

Did you try the player on another PC? This will narrow down where the problem is very quickly.

  • Computer says usb device malfunction

I have a new 16 gb ipod touch bought today ,tried to connect to computer via usb .but computer says device has malfunctioned and computer not recognize it i have tried to restore the ipod and also reinstalled itunes .also checked and restarted AMDS ,HELP what is going on Please

Try this. With your iPod plugged into the usb go to device manager and see if you see a yellow question mark next to and unknown usb device. If you do right click and choose to uninstall the device. Then unplug your iPod and reboot your computer and plug back in your iPod. This is assuming you have Windows. Hope this helps.

  • "Malfunctioning USB device connected" - Zen To

Hi, I've been using my Zen Touch fine for a few weeks now, but recently changed my home computer's OS to XP Home. After reinstalling all the Zen Touch drivers and s/w (including the latest versions off this website) the computer no longer recognises the player when i attatch it to any of my USB ports.
Not only this, but two other computers that previously worked fine with the player no longer recognise it either, all saying the same message: "Unknown or malfunctioning USB device connected"
No matter how many times I try to unistall/reinstall drivers etc I can no longer get any computer that previosly worked with the player to now recognise it.
Anybody have any idea what has happened?
I have a feeling that I had the player connected the first time I installed the drivers after changing my OS, would this have the fatal effect that I'm now experiencing?
I can still listen to the music that's on the player fine, I just cant get a PC to recognise it to add any new files!
I wanted to try and reload the OS on the player through rescue mode, but am worried that this will make things worse since I cant recognise the player on a PC to reload the OS from. Any thoughts on this?

Tried a disk cleanup on the player? To access the Rescue Mode hold down the play button and KEEP it held down, press the tiny reset switch once, and KEEP the play button held down until the player boots into the Rescue Mode. Choose Disk Cleanup from the menu. Note: Disk cleanup should not remove your tracks. It searches through the disk for files and rebuilds the index, and can be useful for correcting any strange behaviour.
There's lots of other connection advice here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net.

  • Pls Help "Windows USB Device Malfunction" for 2nd Gen nano

Desparately hoping for some assistance here...
I got a used 2nd generation nano that charges properly and plays the songs that are already on it. When I try to hook it up to the computer I get a +USB Device not recognized message: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it"+
I am getting this same msg on an older PC running Windows XP and all the latest Service packs and I'm getting the same message on a newer PC with Vista.
Both computers recognize my 3rd generation nano and ipod mini.
I tried the 5Rs. I did the Windows update and downloaded the latest itunes.
I also tried various combinations of resetting (menu + select) while I was attaching the ipod to the computer. I've tried several different USB cables, but I know the cables and the USB ports are fine because the other ipods work with them and this ipod does charge when connected to the PC.
Based on some of the other postings I tried opening the Device Manager and the ipod shows up under USB controllers as "Unknown Device." Windows obviously can't find the driver for it in order to update.
Does anyone have any ideas here? Is there a way I can manually update the driver file?
    thank you!

Okay, this is exactly what the popup says:
"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it."
My friend who has an older ipod says unplugging and plugging it in so much is going to kill the battery. Someone please help! I went to exchange it at an apple store yesterday and the guy said I should try it on the computer again.
