Preserving collections?

Im trying to use Adobe Bridge to set up thumbnail collections of campaigns that my workgroup has done, and Im wondering if there is a way to keep those thumbnail groups even after the data is moved somewhere else (such as to a different server or to a different location on the same server).
This is what Ive done so far: I added keywords to the files in a campaign (these files appear in different folders at a variety of levels), then ran Find to search for that keyword. Once all of the files appeared, I saved that search criteria as a collection. This works great until the files and folders are moved to a different folder (that is higher than or at the same level as the folder specified in the collection's search criteria) or a different server. Once the folders are moved, I have to edit each collection in order to redirect it to the highest level folder where the files have been moved to. Is that the only way to ensure that the collections still find all of the files, or is there a way to somehow automate the process (or use another feature of Bridge) so that the collections can find the files with the right keyword, even if the files/folders are moved somewhere else?

I agree that it's not necessary, but...I am a psycho. Also I've been working in a library for several years and a lot of OCD has rubbed off.
I was able to find a way, actually, using a similar trick I figured out for (almost) the same dilemma in iTunes.
If you select all your photos and hit metadata > write to files, then data like crop/develop settings, star ratings, keywords, etc. is written to the files. If you remove the images from your catalog and re-import they DO keep those things, if it's written to the files.
The only thing that's lost is flagged/unflagged status and collections, which I overcame by just giving everything flagged 3 stars (you could just write a 'flagged' keyword) and giving everything in the 'christmas 1985' collection the keyword 'christmas_1985.' Then it was easy to use those keywords to get things back into collections, or not bother with collections and just use the keywords. You could just use keywords for all of this in the first place, but I like having collections separate things by subject and saving keywords for other attributes.

Great. I conclude you're using LR or PS for the additional edits? If moving to another PC, you might find it advantageous to "Export as Catalog" and Import as same: this preserves collections, history, and a few other good things.

Can the original photo time be preserved in Bridge CS6 to PS CS6 'Process Collections' panoramas?

Unlike manual processing of panoramas in PS CS5, when I processed today's photos via Bridge CS6's 'Process Collections' facility I lost the time the photos were snapped. This makes geotagging of the panoramas thus generated impossible. Is there any way to avoid the invalid time stamp the panorama thus acquires? The processing is otherwise superb! It finds the panorama shots, combines them beautifully, and saves them automatically.

The issue relates to ‘geotagging’, and I haven’t looked in depth at the files in question. I use a ‘Gisteq Phototrakr’ to track my location during my Hiker-Biker Trail rides where I take some panoramas with a pocket camera. When I use Bridge CS5 and Photoshop CS5 the Phototrakr is able to match up the times on the stitched panorama with my geolocation. The same panorama created via Bridge ‘Process Collections’ and Photoshop CS6 leaves Phototrakr unable to make any match because the creation times of the panoramas are now the stitch times, not the times the photos were taken. It turns out that I always use one additional step, and therein lies the problem. Please read on.
I just tried to reproduce the problem with some photos taken March 27, 2012, and I discovered that the step where the date is changed isn’t the panorama creation step but the ‘Ctl-Alt-Shift-S’ save-for-web! It is here that the date is changed from the original to the current date and time. I’ve attached the shrunken/compressed jpg I just created so you can see the problem. The original panorama created this morning via CS6 from the March 27, 2012 photos holds the correct date and time—I didn’t include it because it’s 160 MB in size.
My apologies for not investigating this issue further so that I could provide you with the proper information necessary for a fix.

What steps to take to preserve iTunes data when reformatting computer?

I have iTunes for my iPhone and connected to an Apple TV and an AirPlay speaker. My computer, a Windows 7 machine, is getting glitchy and I want to reformat and reinstall the operating system.
I want to know what I should do to back up my Apple data before I reformat.
I don't have any itunes music purchases
I have some podcasts
I have some paid apps on the phone
My entire mp3 collection is stored on a separate drive, just linked to iTunes
What should I do to
Ensure that I have all of my apps and podcasts when I reinstall iTunes on my computer?
Preserve my phone backups that iTunes does?
Is there anything else I need to think about before reformatting?

Do the same thing you would do with any other data you wish to preserve on the computer, back it up..
What works best for me is creating a complete image of the drive as it exists currently to an external drive. Then once the computer has been formated and reloaded I can put the content I want and need back on the new drive from the backup. The advantage is I know exactly where the data belongs based off that backup image.

Current setup:
OS: Windows 7
Total Music collection: 80GB of mp3 , which is NOT added to itunes library (I use foobar)
iTunes Music collection: around 500 songs, synced to my iphone (unchecked "manually manage" that meeans all these songs are in itunes library)
Now the required setup: (Since I am planning to get a macbook pro)
OS: Mac OS (This means the music file path will be different)
Total Music collection: 80GB which is to be added to itunes library
iPhone Music: The same 500 songs as before.
Is this possible? In Mac OS I want my entire 80GB to be added to itunes library, also keeping my existing iphone songs intact.

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

Transferring the library as above will connect your i-device to the same library on the new computer even though it is stored on different hardware. You should not see the "erase & sync" prompt, and syncing will preserve game scores and other data on the device.
As for the 80GB of music in foobar, add that to the iTunes library at some stage by dragging those files to the Automatically Add To iTunes folder.

How can I compare two collections at the same time? (View two grid views)

I have two collections containing some of the same images. (My Nikon D70 did not put an end-of-file on some images. I recovered them into a different collection.) Now I want to display both collections side-by-side in grid view. I will select those images in the "recovered" collection that correspond to the bad images in the "main" collection, add the ratings etc, and move just these to another collection.
It is extremely frustrating to have to bounce back and forth between collections, remembering each image one by one and selecting it in the "recovered" collection. (The image names are not preserved in the "recovered" collection -- I have to go by what the image looks like.)
LightRoom allows me to compare photos in the compare view. I want to compare collections in two grid views.

you have ran into a situation when you have to compare two sets of images and now you're wondering how come Lightroom doesn't have such "obviously necessary" functionality? But you have to admit it, this is not such a common situation in a photographer's workflow recovers broken files and tries to compare them against themselves. I think it's a pretty specific feature you need. Still, Lightroom has enough powerful tools for editing and sorting images.
For example...
You could just put them all - "main" and "recovered" - into a single collection or into the Quick Collection. Label the entire "recovered" collection with, say, red and sort by capture time. Now you'll have everything side by side, ordered chronologically. The "recovered" images will stay next to the "main" images since their capture time will be the same, and they will also stand out since they have the red label.
Make the thumbnails bigger and set up the grid view so it tints the thumbnail cell are tinted with the label color. Now, you can go quickly through them visually checking labeled vs unlabeled.

Cs5.5 master collection wont install After Effects or Premier

Just upgraded from CS4 to CS5.5 and installation errors on After effects and Premier. I'm running windows 7 64 bit pro service pack 1,Duel x5650 xeons, 24 gigs of memory, 250 gb ssd. Before installing CS5 I uninstalled cs4. After the first installation error I unistalled cs5, ran the AdobeCreativeSuiteCleanerTool.exe, and removed all the adobe folders from my program files and program files(x86) folders. I've spent the last 4 hours searching for a solution, no luck yet though. I don't have any user account controls set. I think it's a font permision problem but don't know. I called adobe tech support, but no luck. Any help would be apprecieated. the following is the error code.

Thanks. I tried the all the steps in the link you provided. Plus a few others from adobe support, I spent about 4 ½ hours on the phone with them over the past 2 days. I reinstalled all the Microsoft payloads, updated my video drivers, admin privileges, closed all my services and startups, uninstalled adobe air, flash player, deleted a few fonts from my system, although that was a pain because I had to go into safe mode to delete them, and I lost track off the rest. I haven’t had any troubles installing any other software, including CS4.

I'm facing the same issue, actually restored a backup of the BI site collection into a different web app (on the same server) but get the same errors as you!
Looking into it the connection to the report or filter (whatever artefact it is) needs to be refreshed so technically the report doesn't exist as far as the performance web part is concerned!
However when I re-attached the web part to the filter or report I got a different error... 'This data source no longer exists'
So basically I found I had to re-create the reports and filters etc in Dashboard Designer... to re-create the dashboards. I did one page and don't want to spend months re-doing them!
Anyone come up with a way of preserving the web parts references to performance point items and the items connections to their data source in a restore of a site collection?

Need some help in collection initiallization

You can use the following query and do a copy past of the output.

Do I need to use a Collection/VArray or ...?

Hi, all. Here's what I'm trying to do on an Oracle 9i database: I've got some 4 dates coming in from a table; I need to verify that they're valid by checking them against the person's birthdate, and then use only the valid dates in my package. So the dates need to be available at the package level to all functions and procedures within it.
I've looked at VARRAY and other collection types, but wasn't sure how to make them available to the entire session and have them automatically killed at the session end. Whatever I use, it needs to have at least 3 columns of data for the duation of the session. Here are a few questions for the PL/SQL gurus,
- Is this possible?
- Should I be using a global temporary table? Like this, defined in one function,
execute immediate 'create global temporary table...';
- Are the values in that available to other functions/procedures within the same session?

In short, you want to create such a table once as part of setting up your application.

Need help with comparing cursor row to a collection

I have been racking my brain trying to get get the code below to work properly. I am loading a table via bulk collect into a collection. I want to run code that tells me if the value of batch_REC.co_id exists or not in co.id collection. The best I have is below. The compiler does not like the MEMBER statement, and I do not know why. I am running 9i if that makes a difference. Any pointers would be extremely helpfull. Thank you.

Adobe After Effects CC 2014 Multi-machine rendering does not create RCF after Collect-File

This was working in the previous release. After going through all of the steps to perform a multi-machine render, not only does it say it is limiting it to 5 machines instead of the usual 99 (and I have over 100 cores on the render farm) but "Collect Files" (File/Dependencies/Collect Files) does not create the Render Control File (RCF) that kicks off the process on the other machines, like it did before and is supposed to do.
This release was supposed to fix the 32 core limitation on render nodes (my server has 48), but now does nothing at all.
Anyway, I assume there is a check box somewhere that says "do something" that hasn't been checked and another that says "Maybe my machine has more than 5 cores", and I would appreciate being steered in the direction of these new mis-features.
Just as background, the 48 core server does show the little TV screen that monitors the watch folder, and I know for a fact that process looks for the "RCF" file. Looking at the directory specified for "collect files", I can see that no RCF file is created, only 1 file, a report.txt file which contains this information is produced:

The dialog box has been slightly refactored. You must click "Allow watch folder rendering" and then all is good. Hope this helps anyone else. Thanks to Rafil at customer support chat for this.

Preserving Black when Exporting from InDesign to PDF

Hi All:
I hope someone who knows Acrobat can help me with this. I have an InDesign file that I must export to PDF. That in itself isn't the problem. This is:
The text in InDesign is solid black (000000), but once it exports to PDF, it collects a myriad of colors and will not print preperly to the newsprint. I'm doing this for a newspaper. I use InDesign, they use Quark. The client uses InDesign as well. I can NOT figure out how to convince Acrobat to leave the color alone.
I've tried to figure it out with the Ink Manager, etc., but for the life of me, no matter what I do, It comes out as all the colors of the rainbow. It LOOKS black in the PDF, but when you select it, it is NOT black. It's a mess. Two full pages of this stuff and I'll have to redo the whole darned thing in Quark unless I can figure this out.
I have tried using "Preserve Black" once it's in PDF format, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Obviously I'm missing something in the Export from InDesign function, but I can't figure out what.
Can someone help me?

Best way to collect all video and picture files for a project

after effects has this great feature where you choose COLLECT and basically what it does is collects all your media files and puts them in a folder. What the best way to do this in FCP?

How can I preserve PDF files in iBooks during synch or iOS updates

I have lost many important PDF files saved in iBooks collections as a result of upgrading the iOS on my iPad. How can PDF files and other free books, NOT purchased through iBooks store that are opened and stored and organized in iBooks collections be preserved/saved during iOS updates? Same question also applies to PDF files stored in other Apps like iAnnotate.

Before upgrading you should always back up your devices. If there is any problem you can then restore to the backup. pdfs do not sync across all devices. To sync pdfs you need to connect your devices to your Mac, and depending on where the pdfs are located, you either transfer them to your Mac, or sync them from your Mac to the iPad and iPhone.
