Preserving Illustrator Elements in Multipage Document

Hi all,
My employer just recently upgraded our Design Team to CS5. Previously, we had been making individual Illustrator documents and combining them in Acrobat. When we do that now, and reopen in Illustrator to edit the document, the elements break themselves up, put themselves into clipping masks and groups, and type is broken into multiple sections instead of an individual text box. We'd like to be able to preserve the editing capabilities when we make multipage PDF documents from our Illustrator files, but I've not been able to locate how to do this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think your best plan if you are going to continue this workflow (opening PDFs in Illustrator Land) is to just save your Illustrator files as native .ai files but turn on "Create PDF Compatible File" in your Save options.
Then you can open your .ai files in Acrobat to combine them but it would probably best best to do a "Save As" after this with a new file name so that you still have your original "un-acrobatted" illustrator file.
Be very careful of combining Acrobat pages from different PDFs where the users used different resources for their fonts, such as a PDF generated from a Mac using Type 1 fonts and a PDF from a Windows machine using Truetype fonts. Even if they are, per say, the same font, such as Helvetica, this could cause many problems down the line. Even if both source PDFs are from Mac machines, make sure they are both using the same font libraries.

The checkerboard is just a way for you to be able to tell a transparent area. It doesn't print. Without something like that you wouldn't be able to tell a solid white area from an empty area.

  • Question about TextEdit. How do i add a custom header to a multipage document? For example, "Smith, page 2", "Smith, page 3', etc. I can do it in Microsoft Word, but cant figure out how in TextEdit.

How do i add custom headers to a multipage document in TextEdit? i need to add a custom header in upper right of page, for example: "Smith, page 2", "Smith, page 3" etc.  The add header setting in Textedit file-print only adds date : time in upper right, with "Page 1 of 3" on bottom right.

It's just a text editor not a word processor.

  • How to map the elements in Indesign document with the PDF elements

I wanted to know any way of mapping elements in the InDesign document with the elements in the exported PDF document from the same InDesign document.
E.g If I have an Image X in InDesign document, Can I point out the same element in exported PDF using some mapping?
    Thanks in advance
    -Sandeep

What is meant by me is, if there is a Text element in InDesign document, I should able to point out the respective PDF object.
I am looking for some way to mark a specific InDesign element and once we export the document to PDF, I want to point out to the same element in some way so that I can process it.
Requirement is simple, one user will mark some elements in the InDesign document and export it to PDF and send it to the other user. Other user will parse the PDF and extract the same element back or process it and use it.

  • Getting next XML Element in a document

    Hello,
I have an xml JDom Document and I need to get, given the name of an element, the next element in the document.
    For example, with this document:
    <ROOT>
        <APPLE></APPLE>
        <GRAPE></GRAPE>
        <PEAR></PEAR>
        <ORANGE></ORANGE>
        <GRAPE></GRAPE>
        <MELON></MELON>
</ROOT>I get a string like "ORANGE" and I need o get the next element in the document (GRAPE).
And if I get "GRAPE", I have to get "PEAR" and "MELON".
Is there anyway to get the following element without checking all the document elements?
    Thank you

Is there anyway to get the following element without
checking all the document elements?Obviously not. But why is "not checking all the document elements" a requirement?

  • Add new elements to existing document

I have a table with an xmltype column. Is there a way to add additional elements to a document in the database using the built-in SQL functions like updatexml? In the documentation I just see examples of updating the text between elements.

    Hi,
Similar to an updateXML() in PLSQL, there is something called insertXML() too. I think this is what you are looking for.
    Thanks,

Can InDesign or an InDesign script solution tell me if I have hidden elements in a document? As in the following examples:

Not out of the box. Perhaps with a script. You can ask in the scripting forum.

  • Printing a multipage document containing multiple Components

    Hi everybody,
I am trying to print a multipage document which consists of multiple JPanels used for grouping, each of which hold JLabels and JScrollPanes and JTextAreas.
I know how to do multipage printing with text but I am lost with the multi component situation.
Thanks in advance for any help.

If you know how many pages are in use, get the size of the page (the pageformats imageable height * page number) and with that number translate the page up that number of pixels. ( the translate method of graphics ). Then you can draw all the components on the page. Make sure you translate before you draw, this mistake took me a day to figure out. Hope this helps.

  • Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities

When saving out a PDF, unchecking the "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" checkbox results in a smaller file because it's not emedding "another copy" of all information that Illustrator would use to open the PDF if you tried to open the resultant PDF in Illustrator.
When saving out a PDF, unchecking the "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" checkbox the data in hidden layers is excluded from the file . . . right?
Now for my question: Then why does deleting hidden layers right before saving a PDF with "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" unchecked result in an even smaller PDF?

    Thanks for your response!
    layers that you've deselected
I haven't "deselected" layers, I've deleted them, right before saving the PDF.
And you're right, it's when I delete hidden layers that contain raster bitmap information that I see an even further decrease in filesize.
But, when I DON'T delete layers with rasters in them and save out a PDF with "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" turned OFF, leaving the hidden layers at the time of saving and then open the resultant PDF in Illustrator, the data in those layers hidden at the time of saving is NOT there - so then what downsampling? If supposedly downsampled rasters ARE NOT even saved in the non "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" PDF?

  • Since upgrading to Mavericks I can only print one page of a multipage document.

Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks my HP Deskjet 6840 color printer will only print 1 page from a multipage document at a time no matter how I set the job.  And sometimes it prints the same page even thought I set the parameters for a different page. I have the latest driver. I can't find any solution on the HP site or elsewhere on the internet.

The driver should be part of OS X, not something you download.
This link shows supported HP printers (6800 but no 6840).

I suggest you delete the printer, turn it off, restart your system, and turn the printer on and add it back in.

  • Illustrator cannot open a document

Illustrator cannot open a document without activating missing fonts. Substituting fonts did not helped.
    I am desperate

Probably they are printer-side fonts normally only intended for substitution and whoever created the doc in the first place unwisely used them liek normnal fonts. The only way to fix this would be to install the printer driver they are associated with - if you can find or know which it is. And please don't "shout" on this forum. No need to use fancy text formatting - people will either read your post or they won't no matter whether you use normal formatting or pink Comioc Sans at 48pt.

  • Use Illustrator for multi-page document?

I'm usually in the FrameMaker and, to some extent, InDesign areas, but a potential client asked me to work on a document for them.
They are doing a quick reference guide (I would assume either a single sheet folded into six panels, or several sheets folded and stapled into a booklet), and are planning to do it in Illustrator.
I've done these before in InDesign, but wanted to know if there is some capacity in Illustrator for doing the document there, for either of the formats mentioned above.
Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Jagged:
    Yes!
For that you use the artboard feature in Illustrator. When you create a new document, specify the number of artboards (aka pages) you need, and the amount of space between, etc. Once you have your document set up, zoom out and you'll see all the artboards laid out in the grid you specified. If you don't see them, make sure "show artboards" is checked in the view menu.
You won't be able to create a master page like you can in InDe, but you can paste in the same place on all the artboards--I believe the command (mac) is command+shift+option+V. You cut the original item (command+x) and then paste in place on all pages.
    Interesting tidbits:
If you open the artboard palette, you can name the artboards. When you export, say to outlined EPS, you can choose to "use artboards" and you'll get a separate eps file for each artboard WITH THE NAME from the artboard palette, plus a file with all the artboards together. Saving as PDF makes a multi-page PDF as you would expect. You can choose to output just one artboard.
Also, with the artboard palette open, you can double-click on an artboard name and Illustrator will jump to that artboard at full screen size. Quite handy when you have a lot of artboards.
You can change the layout of your artboards by clicking in the upper right corner of the artboard palette and choosing rearrange artboards (or something close to that). Make sure everything is unlocked, otherwise they won't move with the re-jigger.
And finally, you can change the size of an artboard by using the artboard tool from the tool palette or by double-clicking on the artboard's icon in the palette, which will bring up a dialog box...
I am an InDesign lover, so I feel your pain. One of my clients is a manufacturer of retail items for which we design and prepare for print many packages/backer cards/etc. Before the artboard feature existed, we had a separate Illy file for each SKU. It has allowed us to be a lot more organized, and you don't get hit with seven gazillion files when you open up a folder. (I tried to get them to convert to InDe, but really, it's not set up for this kind of use, so I've had to learn the ins and outs of Illustrator and have come to appreciate it for many things. Alas, type manipulation isn't one of them, but it's designed to draw pictures, not set type.)
    Good luck and best regards--D

  • PDF export multipage document CS4 how ?

    hello,
does anyone know how to export a multi-page PDF document in Photoshop CS4.
It works fine as one page with the SAVE AS pdf menu, but then it does n t allow me( or i didn t see it ;)) to save from a folder several files, or many already opened files on the desktop.
It used to be under > File

    PDF presentation
i tried with Bridge a solution suggested on some forum, but so far what i succeed to do was saving each page separately...
I have the Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium, windows xp64 bits
    thanks!

This is something I'm still confused about also.  In the Bridge - output- I can see it will make a multipage presentation.  I see if you choose full size it will make one 'picture' per page.  I am archiving old letters and scan each page and would combine in CS2 as described in earlier posts. What I don't see are the choices in saving as in a pdf. in the Output area.  Just high or low quality, what about the press quality etc.  Am I not seeing it?  Or the compression choices etc. that is usually found in a pdf save. That whole popup screen with choices. Or the choice where you could also adjust order in open files. Or do I have to purchase Adobe Acrobat to get those options now?  For a multi-page pdf document.  I have no other Adobe software, like Illustrator etc.  Thanks for your help, I'm upgrading from CS2. Vista 64.
