Preserving keywords when exporting then reimporting photos

Hi all,
I have a lot of photos which are very big (8 megapixels at 95% quality) and they take a lot of space on my small MacBook. I would like to export them, delete from iPhoto, resize and then reimport. Unfortunately, I have added one keyword (Favorite) to some of these photos and I would not like to lose that information.
Any idea how I can preserve this single bit of information (i.e. the Favorite keyword) when doing my export, delete, resize, reimport routine?
Thanks.

Avinash
You can resize the pics plus write the keywords to the file if you export using the File -> Export dialogue.
You do realise that by doing this you will a: reduce the quality of your pics and b: defeat the non-destructive editing feature of iPhoto.
If space is an issue then I suggest that you run your library from an external disk - they are quite inexpensive now and portable ones are available.
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • In aperture 3.4.5, I get unsupported file error when exporting version of photo I've edited using plugins?

In aperture 3.4.5, I get unsupported file error when exporting version of photo I've edited using plugins. I have try reinstalling aperture three times, deleting plists a few times, reinstalling plugins, restarting my MacBook Pro many times. Everything I've tried may fix the problem for a very short while and I can export a few photos before it returns. The problem happens with topaz and photomatrix pro plugins after I edited and try to export version.

I had the same problem with the Photomatix plug-in and this solved it for me. I realised it only happened with Photomatix and not other plug-ins so I checked where the plug-ins were installed. The Photomatix plug-in was installed in
    ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins/
where ~ is the home location for the current user account. All the other plug-ins however were installed in
    Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins/
which is the location that makes them available to all user accounts on your Mac. Moving the Photomatix plug-in to this location solved the problem for me.
Note that the Library directory under the first location is normally hidden, to get to it hold down the Option (Alt) key and select it from the Finder Go menu.

  • Preserving links when exporting to PDFs from Pages 5.1

Several people have noted that links do not survive after the first page of a PDF document when exporting from a Pages 5.x document to PDF.  *IF* the links are dislayed as html code, they will survive: e.g.
    html://www.apple.com
will work on all pages of the PDF document (anyway, it works on page 2!)
But if you edit the link and CHANGE THE DISPLAY NAME, the links will no longer work on page 2 and subsequent pages.  E.g., this link will NOT work even though it resolves to the same address (i.e., html://www.apple.com).
    apple.com
This is insane, of course.  Any work arounds?

Right, I know it will work if you don;t edit the display name.  But one often will want to do that. If you were writing a column, say, you might say "In Dick Francis's novel Refusal, the author soes thus and such." That link is clickable. It would work natively in Pages 5, as in Pages 4.3, in a TextEdit document natively or exported to PDF, and in Apple mail, etc.  It also works when you export from Pages 4.3 to PDF.  In Pages 5, however, it only works (after the first page: who knows why it works on the first page!) if the display name is the same as the html code.  This is a bug, or sloppy programming, or both.
I like Page 4.3 quite a lot. I has its limitations but it is simple without being simplistic.  I had high hopes for Pages 5. Now that we have 5.1, though, I see that it is just not going to work for me or for my businesses. There are little things like the inability to set the default zoom (which is acutally quite annoying if your eyes are not so hot), the inabilty to see|print comments and big things like the lack of Applescript support, bookmarks, and mail merge.  I thought Apple was going to be bringing back these features, but I see now that they are committed to the lowest common denominator. The people who say Apple is is the business of making "toys" are, alas, correct. I guess the business market is not big enough for them. I've actually removed pages 5.1 from all our our macs, and have removed 2.1 from our ios devices. We still have a few stray documents that were created or edited with Pages 5, but I've discovered that you can use Pages for icloud to download a pages file in Word format.  Pages 4.3 can open and edit Word files, so that is a (cumbersome) workaround. We'll continue to use 4.3 (and 1.7.2 on the ipad) for the time being, but obviously will need to find something that has current support going forward.

  • Maintain keyword when export photo to memory stick

When you assign a keyword to an image, is there a way to export the image such that the keyword (e.g. 'family') remains associated with it?
In other words, the ideal would be that you could export to a memory stick and the keyword would "stick" to that picture so that you could take it to another computer and use iphoto (or some other program) to identify that picture by keyword rather than filename.

    Terence,
Bad news. I went ahead and skipped 07 and upgraded to iPhoto8. It appears that either your advice was incorrect or this feature was broken in 08. Adding keywords within iPhoto08 does not actually change the EXIF metadata.
I added keywords within iPhoto08 and exported the image to the desktop. I then used MacMetaShow and found that the exif data was not modified. I did some Googling and found a few complaints that this is still a problem. I suppose it is possible that MacMetaShow is not reading the data correctly so I will try to find a different program to verify this.
Can anybody else corroborate this problem?

  • How to preserve metadata when exporting non-jpgs from iPhoto?

I have a problem with an iPhoto library, and need to move the photos to an undamaged library.  (I have been able to confirm that the problems are specific to the library and not to individual images or with other iPhoto libraries on the same computer, and rebuilding options have not helped.)  I can export the processed jpgs intact with the metadata (titles, descriptions, keywords) that I added manually in iPhoto, import them to another library, and the metadata is intact.  But unless I convert the TIFF and NEF originals to jpgs, they lose the metadata on export.
Is there a way to get these original format files into another library with their format and metadata intact?

    1. Why not simply rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager
This will do that process for you - and preserve as much of that metadata as possible, along with Albums and much of your organisaion.
    2. You can't export the Original plus the added metadata, then you wouldn't be exporting the Original. You can export the Tiffs as tiffs though, and that can include the additional metadata.
    3. There is no way to write the additional metadata to the NEFs.

  • Exporting then Importing Photos changes the dates in iPhoto...

    Hello,
I am exporting photos into the Watermark Sense App from iPhoto. Once watermarked, when I import them back into iPhoto the date has automatically been changed by a year and a day.
    Why?
Is this an iPhoto issue, or an application issue?
    Thanks in advance,
    Karen

I "add images" into Watermark Sense. Watermark them. Press "Save", then "add to iPhoto"
Once they have imported back into iPhoto, the year and day has changed.
Sorry but this is what you need to explain
Exactly how are you "adding images" to WMS?
And how are you "Importing"them to iPhoto - saving and adding to iPhoto is not definative
Are you directly accessing the contents of the iphoto library either to get photos or put them back is not supported and could be yoru problem if that is what you are doing
Download simple EXIF viewer - export a photo to the desktop  from iPhoto - view the dates using Simple EXIF viewer - add that photo to WMS - do its thing and save the photo back to the desktop - view the datea again - and import that photo to iPhoto - this will identify either the proper way to do this or will tell you where the problem occures

  • Preserving Black when Exporting from InDesign to PDF

    Hi All:
I hope  someone who knows Acrobat can help me with this. I have an InDesign file  that I must export to PDF. That in itself isn't the problem. This is:
The  text in InDesign is solid black (000000), but once it exports to PDF,  it collects a myriad of colors and will not print preperly to the  newsprint. I'm doing this for a newspaper. I use InDesign, they use  Quark. The client uses InDesign as well. I can NOT figure out how to  convince Acrobat to leave the color alone.
I've tried to  figure it out with the Ink Manager, etc., but for the life of me, no  matter what I do, It comes out as all the colors of the rainbow. It  LOOKS black in the PDF, but when you select it, it is NOT black. It's a  mess. Two full pages of this stuff and I'll have to redo the whole  darned thing in Quark unless I can figure this out.
I have tried using "Preserve Black" once it's in PDF format, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Obviously I'm missing something in the Export from InDesign function, but I can't figure out what.
    Can someone help me?
    Thanks so much, in advance.

Okay. Above is the swtch from the original Color Preset. Below is the swtch after I made the changes mentioned above. I'm sure I'm not the only one who sees no difference. ??

  • Best Codec to preserve quality when exporting media

Hi, I film with Canon XL H1 onto which I have bolted an AJA KiPro Mini Recorder. Via the SDI output I record in 10bit, 4:2:2 and ca. 200 Mb/s using the ProRes 422 (HQ) codec. I managed to get the .mov files onto my PC using Macdrive software and a special SYBA CF card reader. I use Windows 7-64bit and CS5.5. After editing I like to export media in the best quality possible. Best preset provided by CS5.5 seems to be AVCIntra 100. Am I doing the right thing? Better codec might be DNxHD, but this one is not proided as a prest. Like to store on HDD for later transferring to another suitable medium for potential acceptance by European tv stations.

    Thanks Ann,
I am probably a total idiot, but never installed a codec before. Does the installer of say Lagarith install the codec in the correct directory? If not, where must I put it? Then in PrPro how do I access this codec when the drop-down menu of presets limits me to what is there?

  • Preserving CDATA when reading then writing XML files

    Hi All,
I have some source XML that needs to have an update applied and then written back out into a new directory. This all works fine except some of the other elements have values with CDATA around them in the input file and on the output file the CDATA is replaced and the characters substituted ie: turned in &
This is (I guess) default behaviour but I would like the CDATA preserved and writing out into the new XML file.
How can I do this ?
    Regards,
    Steve

    Found the answer :
            DOMParser dp = new DOMParser();
            dp.retainCDATASection(true);
            dp.parse(xmlFile);
            xmlDoc = (XMLDocument)dp.getDocument();

  • Iphoto - when exporting photos with their titles,iPhoto changes the manual sequence that I have given and imposes an alphabetical sequence

    Mac mini
Processor  2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 4000 768 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)
When exporting a group photos with their individual titles, iPhoto changes the manual sequence that I have given and imposes its own sequence (which seems to be alphabetical).  The export dialogue box allows me to use my titles or to impose a numerical sequence.
How can I keep my titles and the sequencing that I had carefully worked out?

What you are missing is that files have no order - you view them using a program and that program creates the order
When viewing in an iPhoto album you can sort manually and iPhoto will display the photos as you sorted them - but when you move to a different program (the finder for example) you have a totally different set of sorts available - for example in the finder the same set of files can be viewed in alpha order, in size order, in date modified order, etc - none of those are inherent in the file but are sorts set under the view menu
So to meet your requirements you must export with file attributes that allow the finder view options to present your desired view - which is what volunteers here have tried to help with - even though it really does not involve IPhoto in any way

  • How to preserve or embedded history in photo when exporting?

Does anyone know how to preserve a photo develop history when exporting to new folder so that editing can continue?

Thanks Jim and DJ - perhaps my process needs to change. I use a folder structure within each photo shoot.  Capture (for all raw files) - Master (for working photos that are being edited / developed) - and finally an Output folder for photos being printed or posted to web etc. I export to each. I understand that you can always go back to the original raw capture or any point in the history but sometimes I want to compare different editions of develop settings for an image against each other while preserving both. When using a copy of an image the develop settings only start at time of copy and likewise when using an exported image the history starts from the export going forward
What I want to do is take photos from the various Master folders that have develop changes to them and move or copy them to another folder; as example a "2015 Art Show folder" for an upcoming photo exhibit etc. and then do additional develop changes specific for the Art Show  - being able to see the previous develop settings would be useful during this edit phase and you could continue to work in the one folder without needing to hunt around to numerous folders all over Lightroom
I hope that explains what I am trying to do, I appreciate any ideas you may have
    Thanks,
    Paul

Don't do that - flag the photo and go to the target event and use the add flagged photo to selected event command to move it intact within iPhoto

  • How do I preserve cross reference text when exporting to XML?

I am exporting my Framemaker documents to XML. However, when I open the raw XML, the reference formatting is obviously gone. So instead of seeing, say,  see Figure 6. I now see, see .
Is there some way to preserve this on export?
    Help would be much appreceated!

    Josh,
The normal behavior is to have an empty element with the ID/IDRef markup that allows the xref element to be resolved again afterwards, by whatever post-processing step you put the XML through. The text of a cross-reference is a FrameMaker formatting artifact (not unlike a paragraph format, etc.) and is intentionally discarded during export. If you reimport the XML with the empty element, FM will re-resolve the xref, and then will restore the text using whatever format it originally had (the format name is also stored as markup).
If you want to preserve the element tag of the xref, I don't think there is any way to preserve the text, unless you write an import/export API client. You could possibly use an XSLT stylesheet to repopulate the text in some cases, but this seems like a process fraught with many complications.
If you do not care about the element tag, the manual says that you can just unwrap it, then you'll get the xref text. Here is a (rough) snip from the Structure Developers Guide:
Translating FrameMaker cross-reference elements to text in markup
You may not want your FrameMaker cross-reference elements to remain elements in the
markup representation—you can choose to translate them to text instead. To do so, use
    this rule:
    fm element "fmtag" unwrap;
where fmtag is the FrameMaker element tag for a cross-reference element.
All of this does beg the following question, though... why do you want to do this, especially if the text is referencing figure numbers, page numbers, etc. that have no relevance in the markup? Normally, it is expected that preservation of the markup is the essential thing, allowing the text to be regenerated later by whatever process uses the XML (perhaps including FM). If you drop the element tag, the actual link will be permanently lost.

  • How can I export Keywords when creating a Web Gallery?

I would like to include the keywords applied to an image when exporting to a Web Gallery. I have learned how to include the caption, and there's a possibility of copy and paste the keywords to the caption before export, but as you can tell, that adds unnecessary steps.
I suppose the larger question is "how do I customize the exported web gallery, and the content it includes?" but that will come next.
Big picture, I'm working on creating a searchable "proof book" and my initial thoughts are to create a custom html template which includes a Google search bar, and indexes / searches the keywords of each photo, exported to the web gallery.
Step one is to get the keywords to export ...

Right-click the page, choose View Page Info, and click the Permissions tab. There you can turn off automatic loading of images (uncheck Use default first to enable the controls). Any luck?
There might be a way to restore that more direct right-click menu item if you need it frequently, but I haven't researched it.
To clean up a page for printing, you also could consider an add-on like the following: [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/print-edit/ Print Edit :: Add-ons for Firefox]. Then you wouldn't have to re-enable images each time.
