Preserving Layer Style Appearance When Flattening Image

I'm using Photoshop CS3 on the latest OSX platform with 6 Gigs of ram, and 75 to 100% cashe allocation. I'm working at 400ppi.
When I create a bevel and emboss layer style to make a shape dimensional, then go to flatten the image or merge layers the contour of the shape on the inner part of the bevel gets irregular and a slight white highlight is added. I want the image to look exactly like it does in layers when I flatten or merge it.
I need to send this to a client this afternoon - could you help please? Thanks!

Not sure how Smart Objects would make a difference to this. I can't reproduce this behaviour, on any file at any size. Your images look like a classic case of rendering descrepancies, at view percentages. I'm also not sure they are labelled correctly - looks more like the flattened one is likely to be the correct one.
Do you have OPEN GL on? I've only got one other suggestion - Layer/layerstyle/ Global Light - is somehow being reset by your flattening process?

• Adjustment layers effects not applying when flattening image or merging layers CS6

So about a week ago I noticed something changed with my adjustment layers. In an image I would make a selection and start using adjustment layers to edit that selection, and then once I was finished, I would merge the adjustment layers together so that I could erase outside areas where the effect was not intended. However, whenever I merged the layers, the effects would go away and the thumbnail preview by the layer title would become blank (gray and white transparent) as if there was not anything on the layer. I messed around and I reset Photoshop, and then I thought the layers were fixed. They were somewhat fixed, except I've started having trouble again. Now I'm having difficulty editing this one image i'm on. It's a portrait with a photoshop-created red mask going around eyes, and I used the dissolve layer effect on the original mask creation which was black at first. Then I selected that selection and made more layers editing the hue, saturation, brightness/contrast, and exposure.
I tried to save the image as a jpeg, and the effects were messed up. The hue and all other adjustment layers seemingly applied, except the dissolve effect does not show up at all. So I tried to fix it manually. I flattened the image first with intention to then save it as a jpeg, but as soon as I flattened the image, again the dissolve effect was not applied. Then I tried to merge the layers, and yet again, the dissolve effect was not showing up. It shows up fine in PSD form, something's wrong with the conversion process. Please don't be mean to me. I'm not great at photoshop, I'm not saying that I am or claiming to be a pro or anything I just want help from people who actually get it. I have CS6 and use a Macbook Pro.

I stopped even trying to read this append. For is seems very complex and overwhelmed my little mind. Please consider including some screen captures showing your Photoshop window with your document that your writing about open and the layer palette shows the structure of the document. For me examples and screen capture of the steps involves involved would be very helpful.

• CS 5.5: Problem when Flattening image? Dimension change by 1px ...

Hello,
I created a plus sign (+) and then I rotated it by 45 degrees to become a cross (x).
The cross has 16px by 16px. When I flatten it using "Flatten Selection" the cross becomes 17px by 16px even if it seems the same.
What is wrong? And how can I fix this?

When I open Illustrator and create a new artboard, I cannot edit or interact with the artboard.  No matter what tool I select, the cursor indicates that the artboard/layer is not editable but the layer is definitely not locked.

• Get layer style settings from the differences between 2 images.

Hello People,
I have a question:
Is it possible to get the layer style settings when I have 1 image with the layer style and 1 without it.
Let's say I have an icon that's just a house.

And I have a house with outer glow.

Is it then possible to get the settings used in the outer glow?
greets Ruud.

You won't get the actual numerical settings, but if you load both layers in the same document, and change the blend mode of the top layer to Difference, you can see the difference between the two images.  Thus:

• FLATTEN IMAGE LOSES CONTRAST

I'm using a Windows 7 icore7 machine. The file I'm working on is composed of six layers: 1) a masked Levels layer; 2) a masked Noise layer; 3) a masked Hipass layer; 4) a convert to BW layer; 5) a copy of the background layer; 6) the background layer. All the eyes on the layers are ON.
When I Flatten Image the contrasty look I've created with the Levels adjustment layer AND with the Hipass layer disappears and the flattened image no longer exhibits those qualities - in other words it reverts back to being soft, low contrast.
All the eyes are ON.
I tried various combinations of MERGE VISIBLE and the same thing happens.
I swapped Hipass for Unsharp Mask and for Smart Sharpen and even more weirdness happens - These filters have no effect at all.
Short of a re-install, what can I do?
Thanks....

This is basically how you make images intended for viewing on the web.
First find out what is the average pixel count size of the monitors of your intended viewers. This is a link to a web site that can give you a clue for the general trends http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp and if you are interested in specific group and web sites you can use tools like this http://www.tastyplacement.com/monitor-size-statistics-for-web-design-html . After  you know the average pixel count size of the monitors of the intended viewers then you can decide how large as pixel count you want your images to appear in that space. You have to make this decision by viewing your images at 100% zoom. At 100% zoom one pixel of your image fits into one pixel of your monitor. When you zoom out less then 100%, a group of pixels from the image will be represented using their average color with one monitor pixel and this causes loss of detail and changed image appearance like the one you are experiencing. When you zoom in more than 100%, one pixel from the image will occupy a group of monitor's pixels and this will give enlarged pixel appearance (steps like effect) jaggies. Web browsers by default display images at 100%.  If your images are for a web site that is yet to be designed, and you are one of the design decision makers, create a new Photoshop document with a pixel count that is the average pixel count size of the monitors of your intended viewers and having in mind the other elements of the web page, decide the amount of space your images will be occupy in the overall design. If your images are going to appear on existing web site/s. Visit the site and make a screen capture of your screen, go back in Photoshop, choose to create a new document which automatically is set to the the pixel count of the content on your clipboard, and after that paste the screen capture. Then create or scale down your images to fit in the desired space. Again, the final effect will be what you view at 100% zoom. With all that said, have in mind that if your images are going to be posted on certain web site like this Adobe forum - images posted here are displayed in the messages as previews with certain size limit. Images larger than this limit will be scaled down automatically by the site but if you click on the preview image, it will show the full size as it appears at 100% zoom in Photoshop. You have to check how your images will be treated on the web sites you plan to use and then you can create them with the optimal pixel count size.
Another thing that you also have to be aware is that you don't have control over the physical size of your images because different monitors and display devices have different size pixels and this will make an image with the same pixel count displayed with the same zoom to appear at different physical sizes on the various monitor models and devices such as smart phones.

• Strange Layer Style Behavior CS3

I'm having a problem with creating a custom layer style. When I click the layer style button at the bottom of the layer pallet, or chiise a layer style from the Layers menu) Photoshop does not open the Layer Styles dialog box. It instead applys some sort of default style and I see a message in the top tool bar that says "Click and drag to reposition the effect." Double-clicking the layer in the Layers Pallet switches to the hand tool and disables most menu functions. I either have to hit Enter or Cmd-Period to cancel and return to normal functionality.
Is this some arcaine setting I've never encountered before, or is PS broken? The problem seems to have started after I ran the OS X Software Update yesterday-- I'm using OS X 10.4.11. I also recently switched my Workplace setting from a custom two-monitor pallet layout to a single monitor default layout.
Thanks--

It seems like the layer effects dialog is popping up off-screen somewhere... When you double-click on a layer with styles/effects applied to it, it usually pops that up, and then if you mouse over the image while that's up, you get the hand tool and allows you to drag to reposition the effect.
That would also explain the disabling of the menu items, that also happens when the layer styles dialog box pops up.
I'm not sure how you go about fixing that, though... I would try saving your workspace layout as something else, and then hitting window>workspace>"reset palette locations" or "reset menus" (although you'll probably lose any custom menu stuff that way) and I would also try applying other default workspaces.
Best of luck!

• Locate Pattern in Layer Style?

I have a photoshop file that's using a tiled pattern within a Layer  Style.  When I open the Patterns Overlay dialogue, it's not listed  within the pattern icons,  yet Its obviously still referencing from  somewhere..  How can I locate this pattern?
thanks
Jeff

The layer styles can embed patterns (textures) so users on another computer
don't need to have the pattern (texture).
You define the pattern from within the layer styles dialog, which works with both
the pattern overlay and texture (under Bevel and Emboss) and then you'll always
have that pattern (texture). You also can find the size of the patterns (textures) used by
holding the mouse over the pattern and reading the size. (show tool tips needs to be
enabled under Preferences>Interface).
Added: This also works for gradients and contours and be sure to save the patterns, etc
so you don't lose them when switching to another set of patterns, etc.

• What is the difference between merge down, merge visible, and flatten image?

Hello, what is the difference between merge down, merge visible, and flatten image?

Hi there,
Merge Down combines the layer below the currently selected layer and the selected layer together into one singular layer. The layer name will change to the name of the layer below the selected layer. In the screenshot below, I chose to Merge Down from the layer "Circle Top". As you can see, afterward I have a new layer named "Circle Below" that has both layers combined.
Merge Visible will merge all visible layers into one singular layer. Merge Visible will ignore any layer that has it's visibility toggled to "Off".  In the example below, I have 4 layers, with the layer "Circle Below"'s visibilty set to "Off". After I choose Merge Visible, all of the layers are combined excluding "Circle Below".
Flatten Image will combine all of the layers into one "flattened" image or layer. You will be prompted to choose whether or not to discard hidden layers before doing so. If you choose "Ok" to discard hidden layers, Photoshop will ignore any layer with it's visibility toggled to "Off". If you choose "Cancel", Photoshop will cancel the flattening process. If you want the hidden layer included in the flattened image, you will have to toggle it's visibility to "On". The following screenshot is what a flattened image's layer pallete looks like:
I hope this helps! If you need further clarification on this let me know! : )

• A bug?  Layer styles change or dissappear when you flatten/merge layers.

Does anyone else experience this problem in CS3?
An example for me would be,
right now I have an outer glow with noise applied to something but when I flatten the few layers I have in the file, the noise simply disappears or the glow becomes faded. With other layer styles, there might be a change, too, but usually the effect just weakens in color when i flatten the layers.
any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

I either used too many words or too few, but I'm not really sure.
The specific layer style combo and layer merge I am talking about is simpler than you might imagine..(see the pictures I posted of the results of the merge.)
Yellow outer glow at full opacity with 100% noise, merged down with a single layer. (and that single layer does not have anything other than a fill in it)
When i merge the two, (both blending modes are set to normal) the noise then disappears and the glow fades. It really does not have anything to do with how close or far away the "view" is.
Trust me, I tried it.
I even used a microscope and a telescope..
It doesn't change anything.
In other words, the layer styles always look okay regardless of how they are viewed, UNTIL you flatten or merge them.
So to finally answer Buko's question, the answer is no.
And I did actually take into consideration what D.Katz said about possible interference with the appearance.. view needing to be at 100 to even judge what's going on.
The problem I am experiencing only occurs the minute one layer combines with another layer that has a layer style(s).
If you compare the two images I posted, you will see that there is a very large loss in quality rendering the layer style not even worth using in the first place.

• Layer Styles won't appear on image

Hi all,
I am having trouble using layer styles to create a border around my image.  I was able to work with it yesterday on two images, however today I can not get the layer style to appear.  I have tried everything I can think of: duplicating background, adding mulitiple new layers, and nothing seems to be working.  Needless to say I am very frustrated at the moment.  Anyone have any suggestions with what I could be doing wrong?
Thanks!

Kristen,
Thank you for the additional information. When PSE acts funny, it is recommended that you delete the preference file:
Quit the Editor
Press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT before you launch the program, keep holding down the keys as you start the Editor.
You should see a window asking if you want to delete Elements settings. You do.
If you don't see the window, repeat the process. Timing is cruicial.

• Opacity & transparency related layer styles lost on rasterize/flatten/merge down (cs6)

So I'm working on a project and I'm making a button and I have come across an issue that I don't normally have with this particular button...I'm not sure why it's happening or how to fix it...but it's pretty annoying. I'm wondering if anyone can help out or if it's a known bug or anything like that!
So, I have three folders for the three different states, and within each folder are multiple layers, some with layer styles (it seems to be gradients that are playing up here, and opacity related), some with no layer styles but just lowered opacity. I need to flatten each of the folders to create the button sprites. The problem is...I go to flatten the folder and it appears to turn off any gradient related layer styles, and anything at a lowered opacity is ramped up to 100%. I tried going through and rasterizing the invidiual offending layers. Same problem. I tried creating blank layers and merging down the offending layers. Same problem.
I'm stumped! Image examples below:
This problem is messing with my mojo! Any help appreciated!! (and yes, my adobe is all patched up and updated)... I feel like I haven't had to deal with problems flattening transparency for many versions....

Generally speaking you can't expect to collapse groups of adjustment layers into a single layer and hope for much of anything useful to come of it.
If you've gotten Photoshop showing what you want to see, what's the problem with leaving the groups as they are, then just doing Save As (e.g., PNG) to store your work products?
Can you save a small PSD file and make it available online, so we can look carefully inside it to see what you're doing?

• Flatten images change appearance

I'm having a problem with two layered files. when I flatten them and they change appearance, that is they don't look the same as the layered file. I'm working in cmyk and the numbers remain the same but the file looks very different. One file I can turn off a levels move and a high pass layer and it will flatten ok. I know its not a profile issue because all my other working files flatten ok and the color setup is the same, Has anyone ever seen this before. I'v been working in PS since 3.0 and never had this type of problem.
BOB

In my experience, g ballard's advice will resolve most instances of this issue.
When 100% viewing and merging visible to a new top layer has not worked the image has always had lots of layers with layer masks and different blending modes applied.
Solution in these cases, for me, has been to:
1) Determine which mask boundary is changing when image is flattened.
2) Reload mask as a selection.
3) Expand or contract the selection by 1 or 2 pixels (usually enough).
4) Reflatten the image and evaluate effect of change at 100% scale.
5) Repeat for each mask until you find the selection that is causing the change in appearance.
This works for me.

• My vector (flattened) images are pixellated when imported in Illustrator. How do I fix this?

Hello.
I am experiencing an issue in Adobe Illustrator.
When attempting to import picture files in Illustrator from PhotoShop, the image appears blurred/pixellated. The image (a .psd file) is converted in Illustrator to a .ai file. I create vector (flattened) images in PhotoShop, which should maintain their picture clarity and quality regardless of what program the vectored image is opened with. Somehow, they are becoming pixellated when converted to .ai files in Illustrator.
I use both Adobe CS6 and Adobe Creative Cloud
Is there a setting or solution that I can implement to rectify this issue?
Many thanks in advance for everyone's input and assistance.

Hello, Doug and John.
Thank you for your replies and for providing feedback.
I am aware that vector format files are only for illustrator. However, I believe you can make a smart object in photoshop using the vector art and it will keep its vector file format in photoshop allowing it to not pixelate.
I would be more interested in seeing if uninstalling and reinstalling the programs would have anything to do with it and also trying to find the settings. Would anyone happen to know if this will resolve the issue? I am hoping this is correct forum in which to post this topic/issue.
Thank you again for your help.
