Presonus Firebox Audio Interface AND LaCie 1T "Big Disk" hard drive

I just bought a G5 primarily to edit video with FCP 5. But of course I also want good audio and want to upgrade my audio interface for recording music. I've read great things about the Presonus Firebox.
I want to connect the LaCie drive to my Firewire 800 port.
The question is: Can the computer handle the Firebox going into a FW400 port AND the LaCie drive going into the FW800 port? I have read murmurs that this is actually a serious problem.
If the G5 and Tiger can't handle both these at the same time, what do you suggest for a solution?
Thanks!

I’m having an intermittent problem with my midi controllers triggering Mainstage 3.
I’m using a PreSonus Firebox audio interface.
It’s been working fine for months, but now when I first turn on the computer in the morning , I’m not able to trigger MainStage from the keyboard.  I tried different midi controllers, different keyboards, different midi cords, and check midi preferences.  The audio interface is working fine and is recogonized, but the midi doesn’twork.  I re-started the computer several times and then finally it miraculously starts working again.
I’ve been having to this every day now.  Any help or ideas is very much appreciated.

I Had the same problem with a FireStudio. Try unplugging the FireWire plug and the power plug. Wait for a few seconds, then plug both back in. The light on my FireStudio was flashing blue/red which means "not connecting." I did what I just described, and everything works again. Hope it works for you.

  • FW audio interface and FW drive Q's

Hi all, we're planning on upgrading our home studio with a quad g5's and have a couple questions regarding the audio interface. We currently have a MDD with 2 internal ATA drives running in RAID as the scratch drive. We're planning on putting them in a RAID firewire 800 enclosure to continue using them as a scratch disk. We also run a PCI audio card which will have to be replaced. Since I've seen no PCI-E audio cards, I'm looking at firewire breakout boxes. Are we going to run into problems with running both a firewire audio interface and a firewire scratch disk?

Well I ran xbench and our current scratch disk scored consistently about 70 : ( The only high score (144) was the random uncached read with 256k blocks. The only thing is that xbench changed their base computers. I have a saved xbench file from a year or so ago and it scored a 116 with nearly equal speed if looking at MB/s/. If you still have your detailed xbench results, can you post how well it compares with mine?

  • Firewire chain for external audio interface and hard drive

I use Logic Studio 8 on a Macbook Pro with a Presonus Firebox, an external Lacie Firewire hard drive for audio recording, and another Lacie Firewire drive for backups.
Is there a recommended chain order when chaining my Firewire devices together? I read somewhere on a ProTools forum that they recommend putting their Firewire audio interface Mbox2Pro at the end of the chain.
So right now I have Macbook Pro -> Backup Drive -> Audio Drive -> Presonus Firebox. I once had it in a different order with the audio drive first, but I found it was reading more slowly from/to the audio drive when it was in that order. I have no idea technologically why this would be the case.

I just found and joined this great forum. Following up on Ray's comments about his MacBook set-up, I have a similar MacBook 2ghz, 4mb ram, 9400 chipset, and am exploring getting into Logic Pro 8 and was wondering if my MacBook was underpowered, and whether I needed to step up right away to a MacBook Pro because of my lack of PCI slots for recording audio to an external eSATA drive.
I was encouraged to hear that the USB 2.0 connection for Ray's external WD 7200 hard drive has worked and improved things and his audio isn't getting choked and he is not getting the clicks and other problems.
I'm wondering if Ray or anyone else has any other tips on using a MacBook for Logic and for optimizing one's setup. And Ray, did you notice a point at which the clicks started? .. in terms of number of tracks? Or were they present from the outset? I'm wondering how many tracks you are running now on your system.
I might mention that I don't have an audio interface yet but was impressed with what I've read about the Apogee Duet. Any comments on interfaces and the Duet?
By the way, I'm just recording one instrument/one track at a time and perhaps occasionally two instruments at a time. And right now, my main purpose for getting into Logic is for editing and mixdown of pre-existing tracks that have already been created on a standalone hard-disc based DAW. If all goes well and if I like the whole Logic experience I'd expect to get a more powerful MacBook Pro or even a Mac Pro or whatever higher end iMac exists in the future.
To summarize, all I'm intending to do initially with the MacBook is:
    1) transfer individual digital tracks from a standalone hard disc-based DAW into Logic for mixdown and mastering.
    2) Record a few extra new tracks one at a time - probably not using any instrument plug-ins but relying on external synth/sampler/guitar sound sources ..in each song (maybe 3-4 tracks at most), and
    3) apply standard effects like reverb and EQ and panning to the mix down and master songs, each song containing a of approx 25-40 tracks.
My basic question is, can a MacBook 2Ghz with firewire 400, 4gb memory and USB2.0 to external hard drive handle this or is it underpowered? Thanks.

  • Input problem with UCA202 usb audio interface and Garageband

Hello, i've tried to connect my guitar in my UCA202 Bheringer audio Interface, and the sound goes fine for few minutes and after i get a noisy distorsioned sound with a big delay...
I dont know if the problem comes from the MacBook, the sound card, Garageband or else...
it come only from input guitar device.
    Thanks to help.
    Alex

There are other posts concerning this problem. I also have a UCA202 and a Peavey PV10 USB mixer. It seams that anything using the 10.4.11 or 10.5.1 mac USB drivers are having this issue. I had to go back to 10.4.10 to resolve at this point. My recordings are clean when going back. There is 10.5.2 comming soon and it is not known if this will fix it. Check this thread for updates.

    Pancenter,
Thanks for the response, but I do not have a midi interface. I am using a midi to usb connector cable, thus bypassing the need for a Midi interface.
The Mac reads the USB cable as a midi device, but not the keyboard that I am trying to use as a controller. I have tried it with my korg sp 300 and with my Nord Electro 2.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,

This is what you have, correct?
    http://www.alesis.com/usbmidicable
    This from Alesis..
"The AudioLink Series USB cable receives and outputs MIDI signal thanks to its internal interface. The USB-MIDI Cable connects plug-and-play to your Mac or PC for an all-in-one USB-MIDI solution."
Notice, -internal interface-. What you have is a simple USB MIDI Interface. Most MIDI interfaces are USB.
My point is (was), MIDI OUT of the Korg goes to the connector marked MIDI IN on the Alesis, those new to MIDI often get this wrong.

  • Help with M-Audio interface and GB

First time with any kind of audio interface and GB. I just got a M-Audio Mobile Pre USB and am a little confused by the monitor settings. Been to the web site and read the manual and they said turn the monitoring off in garageband so I don't hear double monitoring. My question is, is it possible to record and hear the effect I have chosen as well. With monitor off all I can hear is the dry signal.I never had to worry about this before since I was going directly into the Mac, no interface. Is there a FAQ or web site that can help a newb like me with these most basic questions?

Sounds like good advice Christoph. I have been only recording bass thus far, very few effects and no latency yet. I was puzzled by the M-Audio manual that says to turn off the software monitor but on the M-Audio web site forum an expert says to turn on the monitoring in garageband. This will all makes sense to me soon I hope.

  • Audio Interface and Converter HardWare for my future Logic

    Hello, I'm French.
I will buy a logic studio 9 software + a mac pro computer
But i don't really know what Audio Interface and Converter HardWare take?
I'm look for Digidesign + HD Cards or Apogee System or RME, MOTU
After I will buy an SSL mixage table for my studio (in a long time^^)
Sorry for the bad english :S

Logic and Protools don't have exactly the same concept when it comes to audio hardware. But if you want Apogee hardware to use with Logic, then there are options for either PCI-based or FireWire. Go and look at the Apogee site:

  • Audio interface and software for my 13" MBA?

I just bought a new Macbook Air, the $999 13" model, and installed OSX Mavericks
I'm looking to purchase a compatible audio interface and recording/editing software to use with my XLR microphone.
Any pointers? I just don't want to spend $500 and get home and have it not work!

I'm quite impressed by Apogee Duet. 2-channel & no MIDI (still does provide some control function with its single knob) which sounds like it suits what you're looking for. Very simple & elegant design, the sound quality is supreme considering its cost.
Near field monitor of my choice is KRK V8's. Nice natural sounding set of monitors. In comparison to competitors at the price range, these sets 'breathe' & provide a bit more air in sound production without exaggerating any particular freq.
When it comes down to choosing monitor speakers, go to a local pro audio shop & try out a bunch so you can compare. Just remember to bring test CD that you know well what it should sound like.
    Good luck!

  • Bus power (firewire): both Audio interface  - and - hard drive ? Risk

Is there a known risk to damage to the firewire controller (MacBook Pro April 2008 rev) if I connect both a Motu Traveler bus-powered audio interface and a G-Tech 5400 rpm bus-powered drive.
I seemed to recall seeing if one does this, there is a risk of "burning out" the firewire port on the MacBook Pro. Is this a real risk ? Is anyone doing this ? More generaly, what are the risks of chaining multiple bus-powered devices together ?
    Thanks up front ...

  • Bus-powered audio interfaces and preamps

I'm hoping to take a PB G4 Logic system to South Africa to do some remote recording of music in a rural village. There's no electricity in the village. Wondering what options might exist and be appropriate for bus and/or battery-powered audio interfaces and mic preamps. I will be taking 4 mics with me and would like to be able to record to 4 tracks simultaneously.
    Thank you!

Groovy, I do think it is an option worth considering if sound quality or DSP demands exceed the Traveler's mark, as I have stated.
ULNs are 4 lbs each, smaller, lighter, they may be battery powered, like the MOTU.
The Mobile I/O ULN2 has been designed specifically to be... erm... 'Mobile', and of superior quality.
The traveler is more affordable and would fit the bill, I never said it wouldn't.
You can say I am being the devil's advocate and offering the less voiced option-I don't at all think I am off the mark by offering a real alternative which is worth considering given the prerequisites. I would have no problem recording with this setup. It is an option for some people, and for some people the best one. Of course the traveler would be recommended in this thread, and I have stated in each post the condition that ULN2 is a very good option for superior quality. And if you get +DSP you get a great processor too, 80 bit mixing bus-there are things which for some people this option would be preferred. I never said it was the only option-but a good option for location. It IS worth looking into.

  • LaCie d2 Big Disk power problem / failure

I've always been a fan of LaCie drives until recently when I started hearing some horror stories about drives crashing. I've got a couple of LaCie Firewire drives, 80GB Porsche design and a d2 Big Disk 320GB Triple Interface (Firewire 800/400 + usb2).
Suddenly I've had a horror story of my own...
During the past month I have noticed that the drive seemed to lose power and shut down without warning, which in turn caused my computer to freeze and crash. The drive was connected to my computer via the Firewire 800 connection and normally runs all the time that my computer is on. Since the problems began, I have been ejecting it and then turning it off when I haven’t been using it.
Then a couple of weeks ago the drive no longer turned on when the computer is booted up and the power button on the drive has no effect. I have noticed that the power supply box light flickers when the power cable is connected to the drive. When I take the power cable out of the drive the light on the power supply remains on and constant.
So now I am left with a drive that's about 85% full (hours of my CD's uploaded in Apple Lossless format) and therefore I am incredibly anxious to save the drive but more importantly the data on it.
I haven't moved the drive in anyway and it certainly hasn't been dropped or damaged. Likewise nothing's happened to the power cable to subject it to any damage. Furthermore I haven't even installed any new software or hardware recently either.
I've contacted LaCie and my orignal supplier (Savastore) and they're both being backward about repair and warranty despite the fact that in Europe the product carries a 2-year warranty and it's only 18 months old.
Has anybody else experienced any similiar problems? Did you manage to resolve them?

Well, the route of the problem was a malfunction with the the power supply inside the drive. I was lucky to find a 'friend of a friend' at LaCie who was able to fix the problem and save my data. Apparently LaCie's normal policy would have repaired my drive but as a matter of course they would have wiped the drive before it was returned and I would have lost everything. Let's just say I owe the 'friend of a friend' big time because data recovery would have been very costly.
Since the drive has been returned I have backed-up all of the data to a new Western Digital eSata drive. I'm now going to use the old LaCie drive for non-crucial items while I monitor its 'health'.

  • LaCie d2 Big Disk Extreme - failure

I think there is a serious problem with the FireWire communication between MacPro and the Lacie d2 Big Disk Extreme: I just moved to this machine, and I'm experiencing a ridiculous number of bus resets. See this from system log:
    Jul 4 07:28:55 computer-di-lol-productions kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) TI ID 8025 built-in: 5630 bus resets in last minute.
The disk usually mounts properly, then after a while and randomly slows down to almost a halt. Very scary. This happens on two identical drives, which work perfectly if I connect them through USB. Also, this happens both in FW800 and FW400. LaCie recently released an update for such disks which is available from their website, but my drives are apparently updated. I can't move up to 10.4.10 at the moment because I am using ProTools which is not officially supported yet.
Any hints and thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Sorry for the late reply as I wasn't checking the posts. When I bought my 1TB I laready had number of other LaCie stuff, Cd writer, 500Gb and 250 Gb and a DVD writer. As I was passing the the 250 drive to my son I gave him the 1TB power supply so that I did not distrubed the cable arrangment, so I am guessing that I was using the power supply from one of the CD writers.
I really don't know how it affects it, but I am guessing that it just don't have enough beef to feed the drive or the interface. I did a internet search and I seen as a suggestion, I implemented and it worked. As I said all the disk utility software gave the drive clean bill of health, despite occasionally saying could not complete the instructions because of hardware error.
Ona different note this kind of thing happened to me before with my Canon 20D digital camera, two batteries died on me very quickly and charged very erratically , and when I bought my Canon 5D the new charger just charged them properly, so it was the charger that gone wrong but seemingly still functioning to a degree.
But if your drive is brand new with a brand new power supply, and checked your disk with some kind of utility software maybe it is your drive. I am guessing that you formated the drive when you bought it.

  • Lacie 500GB Big Disk Extreme problem.

I have a Lacie 500GB Big Disk Extreme (Triple Interface), that the Airport Extreme (n) is not mounting.
It's formatted as Mac OS Journalled, and works perfectly if connected directly to my MacBook Pro by USB or Firewire.
When connected to the AE(n), I get the following error message:
"Your AirPort base station is reporting the following errors:
    Disk needs repair
Errors were found with a disk connected to your AirPort Base Station. Please connect the USB disk to your Mac or PC and use Disk Utility or another application to repair the disk."
I connected the drive to my MBP and ran Disk Utility, which reported no problems with the drive at all. After repeated attempts, with various cables, I updated the firmware on the drive to see if that would solve the problem. It didn't.
Anyone else having problems with their Lacie drives, especially those of you with the Big Disk Extremes?

Am trying to get my Lacie 300GB Big Disk triple interface to work with my (new) Airport Extreme - however it just doesn't recognise it through the USB port.
Problem A - my macbook works fine with the lacie through FireWire cables (which is what i've always used), but the disks don't mount when its plugged in through the USB.
Problem B - would the Hard Drive work on Airport Extreme if I had a powered hub (with firewire ports) plugged into the USB, and then link up the Lacie through the firewire?
    cheers

  • My Lacie Big Extreme Hard drive does not show connection speed

    *My Concern*
Hi I have a Lacie Big Extreme Hard drive, which although works fine is not showing its connection, shows up in the system profiler as 'Connection Speed Unknown'. -Should I be worried? I have other drives connected to my G5 Dual 2 gig machine and no problem their they all show their connection speeds.
*Other Firewire 'Unknown Speed connection' related Problem*
I had a DVD LaCie Dual layer portable Firewire drive which recently suffered from the same problem and I had to send it back. This was due to it slowly developing a fault of not being able to burn dual layer disks properly.
*What I have done to try and remedy the situation.*
I have been able to do the following but I am afraid with no change in the system Profiler;-
1 Trashed the whole system and rebuild
    2 repair my permissions
3 empty out all my caches with OnyX (third party app) version 1.8.5
4 Disconnected all drives and reconnected them one by one to see if there are any anomalies within the system
5 switched my G5 off removed the plug from the wall waited 30 sec for it to reset itself this was the 1st attempt. On my 2nd attempt I then cold booted the machine and reset Pram settings
6 used Tech Tools Pro 4 version 4.1.2
    7. Replaced Power supply of the offending unit (didn't have to but I wanted to be safe and eliminate this fronm the equation.
9.tried changing around the order in the chain to which the drives were connected to the G5but alas no joy!
    Summery
So my concern is if a device which is Firewire shows up in the system profiler as connection speed unknown should I begin to worry even though it appears to be functioning.
Thank you ahead of time for any help on this matter
    *Supporting evidence*
Please see below a shot of my System profiler so you can see what I mean:-
    *(Important Note)*
The Lacie Big disk has 800/400 Firewire connection speeds I have connected it straight to my G5s firewire 800 port then daisy chained the LaCie's via its other 800 port to the two other 800 Firewire Hard drives.
When the LaCie DVD DL drive was connected, I connected it straight to the 400 firewire port. As it needed direct access to the G5 for it to function optimally.

Hi BDAqua - thanks a lot for replying - really appreciate your help. I was using Time machine to back up on the old lacie drives that I have - I just backed up on both lacies and they backed up faster for some reason but that might have been because they were very small back ups as I did full back ups on Tuesday night - this is the info under the USB section > hardware > about my mac - it didn't show the speed like the example you gave me though but it still backed none the less  :

    Dear Jayas

If the drive is working fine on one system but failing on another especially with the "clicking" sound this is an issue with the system not being able to supply enough power to power the device.
These devices require power from the machine to make them operate if there isn't enough power supplied the drive will fail to work. This is why you are having no issues with one system but are on another.
