Presonus Firestation Problems, signal distortion, preamp nonsense

Am a little out of my element right now. I am working on my first mac since 1989, and am still a newb when it comes to most things mac.
My basic problem is that when I attempt to record from my Presonus Firestation the line level never goes above 3 or 4 green bars. I've tried 3 guitars (1 acoustic with a preamp built-in), and an 1 AKG C3000B condenser mic.
When I use either the tube-drive or the gain adjustments on the Firestation, no noticeable difference in line level occurs until the signal distorts and becomes overdriven.
I've tried different inputs, different settings on the Firestation itself, and had no different results. From looking at the FAQ on HT, I have no idea why this recording setup shouldn't work.
A little more background... I used to use a Digi 001 with Pro Tools on a 2.8GHz Intel P4 PC and had no problems recording guitars using any inputs on the Digi. The front two inputs had mic/line selection and appears to be the only difference to me between the Digi and the Firestation.
Any advice or solutions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I suppose the best solution for a problem is a good night's sleep, a meal and a renewed head to tackle the problem.
The master control for volume was up a bit too high... the recording of the lines were not distorted... the speakers were.
Thanks to anyone that looked at this and scratched their heads. Chalk this one up to getting used to new equipment.

  • Problems with Distortion in 30" Screen and new MacBook Pro 2.6 MHz

I've got problems with distortion and shadows with this MacBook Pro model (the new 2.6 MHz Intel Core 2 Duo w/ 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory) on my Apple 30". The older MacBook Pro(s) work and look fine on this monitor (Apple 30"). Just bought the new machine last week and the monitor is about 1-1/2 years old. This one has the 200 GB Hitachi drive.
Any ideas where the distortion is coming from? This machine has the 8600M GT w/ 512 MB Ram. Looks great until you plug into the Apple 30". Lower resolution does not help.

What does the distortion look like? Pictures would be helpful.
Is it similar to this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1440820&tstart=15

  • Video card problems, monitor distortion

Hi, I have a 17 inch Apple Studio Display (ADC Connector). It's about three years old now. Just recently after I woke up my computer, the monitor suddenly had this crazy distortion that's a kind of banding that goes down the screen. I took a picture and posted it here:
    http://www.kickinthehead.org/temp/monitor_distortion.jpg
It actually looks a lot worse now. It's not just limited to the bands, really the entire image has crazy weird artifacts everywhere. Plus if I have a finder window open and then drag it around the screen, the window will be a nonsensical mess of randomly colored pixels. If I minimize the window and bring it back it will refresh somewhat and only be distorted like the rest of the monitor. Same goes for if I'm on a web page and scroll using smooth scrolling
I've tried reseating the card a number of times. The first time it worked for a few hours, but the last time I tried it was only working for a few seconds then went back to being heavily distorted. I tried also dusting out my computer and the card itself in hopes that would do something, but my monitor now probably looks worse than the picture I linked to.
I jiggled the connection, and at one point it looked all right if I put downward pressure on the cord (the screw wasn't in the slot so there was some room to move). My dilemma is I don't know if a new card will solve this problem, or if the connection problem is on the side of the motherboard. I can't really test it unless I get my hands on another card.
has anyone run into this problem before?
    Thanks
    Dual 2Ghz Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I am experiencing the same exact problems and anomolies as Derek with my 9800 pro 128mb and I am having the same conclusions while trouble shooting. I can tell you for sure that it is not a display conection problem for I am seeing it on 2 screens with a dual monitor set up on both a apple 23" lcd and an analog CRT.
During start up the boot screen displays clusters of virtical white lines running the length of the screen. While on the desktop I see this same blocky checkerboard type pateren that randomly changes but is also affected by on screen movement.
The problem first occured Saturday afternoon upon waking from sleep and got progesivly worse within minutes eventually rendering the computer unusable. The distortion flickers about randomly but also seems to be affected when the card is touched. I seem to recall waking from sleep to this problem in the past but it was fixed by a reboot. No such luck this time. I also tried reseating the card to find the distortion temporarally fixed, but then it came back worse then before.
The card is 2 years old now and has never been modified but has been overclocked by 5% for the past year or so using ATIcellerator II with no other problems.
Also, I am a bit concerned about the heatsink being burning hot to the touch within minutes of boot up.
So far this is the only forum I have been able to find concerning this problem. Any comments would help. In the mean time I am going to go shopping for a new card. Hopefully this is not more serious then a bad card.

  • Output signal distorted

I have a pretty large VI which outputs high frequency signals to control some hardware and then takes an input from that hardware for image rendering.  My problem is that whenever I activate the imaging portion of my VI, the output signals become slightly distorted.  For example, a 1Hz sawtooth output doesn't ramp up smoothly but becomes slightly staggered.  This also messes up the frequency of the signal.  Does LabVIEW have problems outputting signals properly when another portion of the VI has a lot of cpu intensive processing?
I am using the "Simulate Signal" block to create a 1 Hz sawtooth wave, 128 Hz triangle wave, and a 65,536 Hz square wave and outputting these signals through DAQAssist.

    Hi Laura,
I went ahead and changed the 65,536 Hz square wave signal as the first input, but the three signals still do not output simultaneously.  Although the signals slightly change as I vary the Samples per Buffer and Cycles per Buffer, I can't seem to get a combination that is capable of outputting these two low frequency signals with my high frequency signal.  I would either get an error message about "DAC conversion attempted before data to be converted was available," or there would be no error message but the signal output didn't match the given specifications.  Attached is the vi with the modifications.  Presently, there is no error message with the given sampling information, however there is no square wave output at all, and the sawtooth waveform only shows a partial amount of the signal.  I had to make some slight modifications to the Waveform Buffer Generation vi in order to allow me to change phase, duty cycle, and offset of my square wave.  I don't think this would have any effect on the Cont Gen Voltage Wfm vi though.  Any ideas what's going on?
    Thanks a bunch,
    Anthony

  • Plug-in Problem: Guitar Distortion on playback but not on record

Just plugged in my guitar to play through Logic and I've come across a problem I've never had before.
I'm playing my guitar direct. The level is fine in Logic and I can hear in through the monitors. When I had any effect like Guitar Amp or Guitar Rig 3, arm the track and play i get nothing but the clean guitar sound. no input reading into the plug-ins yet input is present in Logic. If I record a little audio and then playback the track it plays with the distortion. Anybody know why all of a sudden my effects won't play in record armed mode?

It's sounds like you're monitoring the dry guitar direct from your interface. Make sure direct monitoring is turned off, and turn software monitoring ON in Logic.
Now you should hear the effected guitar on your recording channel, even though just the clean signal is recorded.

  • Presonus Firebox problem: I can see the audio levels but can't hear. Help!

Searched in the forums to what I think is a basic issue, but couldn't find anyone with an answer...
I have audio routed into my firebox from an external mixer. I can see the audio meter in the "in" sound panel of system preferences moving but I can't hear sound coming out of my soundsticks.
Audio routed out of my computer into external amp/stereo setup is audible, however.
Can anyone help me figure this out so I can move and and start setting Firebox up with Logic? LOL
My hardware specs (I'm running 10.4.11):
    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Name: Power Mac G4
    Machine Model: PowerMac3,5
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 2 MB
    Memory: 1.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.5f1
    Serial Number:
    Sales Order Number:

    Your memory serves you well.
Yes, line outs from the mixer are hooked up to line ins 3&4 on the back of the firebox. What I can't figure out is that the Sound Panel of System Preferences shows a good input level, whereas the meter in Logic shows nothing (rec is enabled and blinking). If I switch cables to the 1&2 instrument ins on the front of the Firebox, I get levels in both Sys Prefs and Logic. I'm thinking, the problem can't be the Firebox, because the computer sees the signal either way. I'm running Logic 6.0 Platinum BTW.
I find Presonus and their manual to be lacking. They take days to write back with curt responses... Either they don't have enough people or the Firebox is not expensive enough for them to devote to customer service... I don't know

  • Signal distortion in Voltage Measurement

    Hello,
I am using PCI-MIO-16E4 for voltage measurement from a Single phase
voltage supply panel. I use CB-68LP as connector cable. When I see the
output signal using Scope it is giving exact value and pure sinusoidal,
but when it comes to LabView 7.1, the magnitude is correct and the
sinusoidal is distorted. The siganal is not continuous and looks like
triggered pulse in the middle for every cycle. So, the signal breaks
goes up like a sqaure pulse and comes down, sinusoidal continues. I
donno if there is any problem with the triggering options which i
didnot selected. I am very new to labView. The example file I am using
(obtained from example finder/DAQMx/Voltage) is attached below.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello Serges,
Thanks for your response and suggestions. Let me explain my problem more clearly. I am using channel 6 now for measuring Voltage so I have connected wires to pins 25,58 on CB-68LP from the transducer output. These numberI obtained from LV itself from connection diagram and also from other thesis works and weblinks.
I am getting the right signal intially for sometime when i see both in the scope and in the LV using our DAQ with the above specified connections. It is same for all other channels. I am measuring in the differential mode only (Can you suggest me if this mode is wrong and where to change the setting in 'vi' attached) and verified it in the test panel too. After a couple of minutes the signal is getting distorted in LV as well as in MAX also as attached above.  But in the scope it show the same sinusoidal without any kind of distortion. I feel the problem could be with the Connector block or connecting wire or my LabView file. The DAQ card is really new which we got 1 week back from NI. I will attach the right signal preview with this post.

  • Iphone in Great Britian discovers Apple tech problem - Signal Strength -

    November 25, 2007
    Signal trouble: British iPhone mystery
Is O2’s network to blame, or Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone?
That’s the question posed by more than a few British iPhone owners who purchased the device in the past two weeks and have been struggling ever since to get decent telephone reception on it.
The problem surfaced two days after the phone went on sale in the U.K. when “Matlock” in Derbyshire started a discussion thread on Apple’s support board entitled “UK 02 (poor signal strength/reception problems)”:
My iphone can barely pick up even the slightest signal, although on occasion can pick up 3 ars, only for it to drop out again. I have two other 02 phones, a Sony Erricson and a Nokia n95 with no reception problems at all. Is anyone experiencing same problem with their iphone, I would like to hear from you. (link)
Two weeks later, Matlock’s query has received more than 100 replies (and 3,723 pageviews), most of them registering similar complaints. Some users found that reinstalling the software made a difference. When others returned their phones for new ones, the problem went away (although some reported that the new phones were no better).
Definitive U.K. sales figures are not available, but O2 reported that it sold “tens of thousands” of iPhones the first weekend it was available.
Several posters on the Apple discussion board volunteered that unlike the complainants, they were getting great reception on their iPhones. And many owners with signal problems expressed pleasure with how well the device performed its other functions.
But unlike American iPhone owners, who tend to blame any reception headaches on AT&T’s (T) cellular network, the assumption in the U.K. seems to be that the signal problem is Apple’s. The impression is reinforced by O2, which has been referring callers directly to the manufacturer.
One clue is that many British iPhone owners can, like Matlock, compare the signal strength on their iPhone with other cellphones using the same network (one user even posted photos showing the phones side by side). Another is that the indicator on the iPhone tends to jump to five bars as soon as it is placed in the charging dock, which suggests that the problem is battery related. As user Richard Catledge points out:
It says in the manual that phone signal is adjusted to the minimum power when not in use, just enough to detect the incoming pings, then it will power up to get the best quality call. It is digital, so as long as the signal power is strong enough to reconstruct at the other end, more power is pointless. I suspect this is what you are seeing, or a slightly flakey implementation.
Meanwhile, the consensus on the discussion board is that unhappy owners should let Apple know. Writes one user who posts as ::…SAM…::,
The only way to get anything done about it is if people that have poor signal problems is to take your phone back and get it replaced. The more phones they get back, the sooner they will do something to fix the problem. Emails and complaints are fine, they can be put in a folder, high handset return numbers cant be so easy to hide under the rug.
Thanks to InformationWeek’s Alexander Wolfe for the link. See his report here.

Interesting post. My previous phone was an 02 XDA Exec, a smart phone based upon a common handset (forget which one), but the smart phone before that was the same. They all had one thing in common - poor reception.
tbh, I think its an inherent problem with smart phones. However, with my iPhone I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary really. Its better than the XDA, at least the iPhone doesn't drop out completely!
But compare it to a normal handset and the normal handset will normally have a much better reception strength.

  • Problem with distortion in CS5

    Hello,
I am a total beginner with a very frustrating problem using flash. When I try to rotate an image (using either the free transform tool or the transform panel) the image completely distorts and becomes very pixelated. I have tried everything I can think of to fix it, but no success. =( If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it as it's driving me nuts.
    Thanks!

  • Problems with distorted frames when making movies in After Effects

    I'm a 3D animator.  When I get through with
rendering all of the frames of an animation and they're fine, I create a preview in After FX and it builds and plays back the preview fine.  But when I go to make a movie, with those same frames, it produces frames in different spots which are blurred, stretched, distorted, spun and or dropped.  What could be causing this?  N E help is greatly appreciated.

There MUST be a simple answer to this problem....
There is a simple answer indeed.
    Here it is:
The highlighted button in the Comp panel enables Pixel Aspect Ratio (PAR) Correction.
So, instead of stretching the footage horizontally, you create a Composition with the same frame aspect and Pixel Aspect Ratio as your source footage (just drag the clip to the New Comp button in the project panel and AE will automate this) and then enable PAR correction and After Effects will give you a corrected (deanamorphized) preview so you won't see it squeezed at all on a computer monitor. When you export it, it will look squeezed until you take it to the target video application. Any professional video application will handle this correctly.Millions of people do this every day, since non-square pixels are still dominant among the most popular video formats.
Even Photoshop has had support for non-square pixels (and PAR correction in the document panel) since CS (ie. Photoshop 8.0).
Note that when you turn on PAR correction (just like when you use odd magnification levels) AE switches to a draft filtering mode, which makes type and other elements look a bit jagged. Don't worry, it's just a preview.
The ideal solution, and the one video professionals rely on, is adding video output hardware to your computer, so you can connect a professional video monitor. After Effects can provide a live preview using such a set-up.
For more information on PAR, see Pixel aspect ratio and frame aspect ratio in After Effects Help.

  • Table Image Gallery Problem - Stretching / Distortion

I am using tables for making image galleries and they have worked fine up until my most recent gallery which has images of different orientations: 3 landscape-style images and 2 portrait-style.
The first (and only) large image I inserted into the table was landscape-style, and the 3 images of this type work fine. I used the 'Swap Image' behavior for each of the thumbnails I have below the large image. The problem is that the portrait-style images get stretched / distorted horizontally to fit the same dimensions as the landscape-style images.
I've tried looking at the code to modify dimensions of the images but there are only dimensions for the 1st/only large image. I've also tried lengthening the height of the container div and the div inside it which contains the table gallery, but this did not fix my issue.
I am somewhat new to Dreamweaver so this may be sort of a beginner's question, but I am hoping someone might help me to figure out how to make the portrait-style images be their original size and not stretched / distorted.
If necessary I can provide the code and try to provide more info.
    Thanks!

I played around with the code some more and changed both the height and width of the (ID: #large) image to "auto" which seems to have fixed the stretching and distortion.
However, if possible, I'd still like to be able to center the portrait-style images in the table. Does anyone know how to do that?

    Thanks for the help !

I am also having issues that remind me of the IWEB days where you design the page get it looking good then when you preview it or publish it everything changes goes to hell and a hand basket - text off the grid artwork slid across the page etc -

  • Problem with distortion with DAQ Generating Sine wave

    Hello,
I have a little problem with my VI who is made for driving a biphased stepper motor:
When I change dynamically the output frequency of my DAQ Generaor, I have some weird effect (see picture). It happend progressivelly like this :
    (the start frequency doesn't matter)
    95Hz - nothing
    95-100Hz progressivelly grow
    100Hz :
    100-105 Hz degressive
    105Hz - nothing
So I generate 2 phases with a rate of 1M and 100k for sampling. All other stuff are set with the same settings.
My device is an NI USB-6356 (1.25MS/s/chanel)
I have tried to set all things at 100k but when I do that my motor won't turn.
Does anyone know why it does this ?

  • Macbook Pro Display Problems - Pixels distorted and jerkig up and down

I took a video of a problem my Macbook Pro is having... I am going to take it in for repairs but am wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if there are any ideas as to what it might be. It has been getting progressively worse over the past couples weeks. At first, it would not start happening until my computer was on for a while. Now, it happens all the time, but it only distorts the windows open above my desktop... not the desktop itself.
Here's a link to the (terrible) video I recorded: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfmmaoDBWLQ
    Any ideas? Thank you!

Glad to help! Sometimes it's good to play with UA a bit, just so you can recognize what's going on if something gets activated. For example, somebody's cat managed to turn on the "White on Black" feature, which drastically affects the appearance of your desktop. I don't know how features in UA keep getting turned on accidentally, but it happens.
