Pressing power button freezes MacBook Pro

Hey guys, I have this odd problem with my MacBook Pro where if I press the Power button on the computer itself when its on (to bring up the shutdown options) it just completely freezes up (mouse not moving, wont sleep etc). The only way to fix it is to hold down the power button untill it turns off.
Also, though this may be unrelated, sometimes when I bring it out of sleep, the fans will go full blast untill i shut it down and turn it back on.
Could this be a software issue or a power management issue? I just had it back from repair recently, they replaced most of the components (logic board, case, display, fans).
Any thoughts? Thanks

Try resetting your SMC.

If that does not work, try booting from your install DVD and test it to eliminate a software issue.
If it still does it, have it looked at again. The fact you just had the logic board replaced, leads me to think the problem is hardware-related--possibly self-inflicted when reassembling it.

  • MacBookPro 15.4 keep freezing up with black dialog box to press power button until off and restart

MacBookPro15.4 less than a year old keep freezing/locking with black dialog box to press power button until off and restart THEN repeat successive times after restarting it?

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents – the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.

  • OSX 10.5.7 freezes MacBook Pro on boot

    Hello,
I updated from 10.5.7 over 10.5.6 a few days ago when it came out. At first, everything was fine, but then my 15" MacBook Pro unibody started having trouble booting. It would freeze for the first 2 times, then boot on the 3rd. Then it was 4 times out of 5. Then today it booted on the 5th try, but Airport would not turn on, so I rebooted. Now it will not boot past the gray Apple logo.
Also, before this, Airport would turn off and refuse to be turned back on if I plugged into power, or if I went onto reserve battery power.
I am going to use TimeMachine to go back to 10.5.6 when I get home on Monday (since all the Apple stores in the area are too busy with the iPhone launches to be of any help [oh yea, ATT can go to you-know-where and take it up the you-know-what])
Until then, does anybody know of a trick to get past this? Booting to safe mode (holding shift) does not work.
    Thanks all!

This works on an MBP? Because when I hold down the shift key and press power button nothing happens. I hold and hold and it just sits there with a white screen. When I release, I get the apple that just sits forever and never moves. What is the exact procedure for doing this?
    Thanks,
    glenn

  • When i press power button i hear several click sounds before start up?

When I press power button I hear several click sounds before start up begins. Shortly after Apple logo appears it clicks off.

Which MacBook Pro do you have? If it has an optical drive then that is just the optical drive checking if there is a disk inserted.

Also, I apparently have to replace my battery. Could the problem have any relevance to a dead battery?

Have you held the power button down for 10+ seconds?  That should turn it off.
    Ciao.

If you never saved, auto save does not kick in.

  • My new mac mini with Maverick does not go to deep sleep even if i press power button or Apple-Sleep mode.

    Hi.
I have my new mac mini with Maverick that does not go to deep sleep even if i press power button or menu Apple-Sleep mode. He goes only to something like stand-by  (power lid is on; after i turn off and then turn on the power he does not wake up just starting). I tried "sudo pmset -a hibernatemode X", tried mode 0,1,3, and even 25. nothing helps. he goes to deep sleep (when all data on HDD) only first time after i change hibernatemode couple times and force it to sleep. Today i even tried to force it to sleep (menu Apple-Sleep mode) and NOT turn off the power for whole night, in the morning he is in this "stand-by" mode anyway.
Could anyone help me please? i need it sleep but don't want to keep my power on for whole night.

Yes.  You can use one of a higher wattage, just not a lower wattage.

What's the power Adapter for Macbook pro 13inch Mid 2012 with core i-7, 2.9ghz, 8Gb ram?
AFAIK it should be a 60wat Megasafe power adapter.
But mine shipped with a 45Watt Megasafe. I got it as a Gift from my friend.
    Thanks in Advance.

This should be my Adapter right?
    Yes.
There is a drawback in addition to taking a longer time to charge up your MBP.  In unusual instances when using your MBP with power adapter attached, and running a very heavy load on the CPU/GPU, the MBP will require additional electrical resources in addition to what the power adapter can provide.  It will then draw upon the battery.  What this means is that using a 45 watt adapter, these conditions are more likely to occur.
Using a 45 watt adapter should not harm your MBP as such.
    Ciao.
