Pretty gtk2 as root, ugly as non-root? [/SOLVED]

Heh, this is actually a little bit interesting. I've never ran anything that requires X as root until just a few minutes ago and realized that running applications such as pidgin and firefox as root, they are significantly prettier than what it looks like when I run it as non-root, even with the same gtk2 theme as you can see in the picture above. Oh, by the way, can you guys which one is my non-root and root running the above? The left is as non-root and the right is as root. See? A lot prettier... And I always questioned why Firefox was so damn ugly on Linux. It looks like it is suppose to as root.
Anyhow, I am curious on either what my non-root account is lacking (I think it is lacking the ability to read certain files), how could I configure it to look like what it does on root, or so on whatever the deal is. To me, this is just crazy. Heh, I am not saying how it looks is totally important, I've always been a fan of usability which is why I use dwm and stuff, but this is just crazy to me, lol, crazy...
Yeap.. So any ideas what I am doing wrong, missing, so on, lalala?
Edit: Blah, I feel like a fool. I played around with it more and realized it was clearlooks on root. My bad my bad my bad. :\ Well, at least y'all know what theme I'll be using. 8D

how are you selecting the gtk theme as non-root? also, which DE/wm are you using?

Can only play sound as root (Solved)

I followed these steps: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ALSA to get my sound working. However, I can only play sound when logged in as root, even though I've added my user to the audio group.

Su vs sudo : run dolphin as root[SOLVED]

I am trying to understand the difference in how su and sudo work.
I tried to run dolphin as root to add a mount point at /media/drivex
with su :
I type dolphin at the prompt
and I get this error

dolphin doesnt work
however,
when I use sudo dolphin from a regular user,
dolphin works even though I get a number of errs
Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-myx" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.

kbuildsycoca4 running...
this is repeated a few times, as though it keeps retrying.
1.Anyway why does su not work when sudo does?
2. So when does one use su vs sudo?
3. I did this yesterday and was able to add a mnt point for my esata drive. Today, I had to do it again. The mount point had disappeared. what may have happened?

The only reason I use "su" (as "su -") is to create a new, clean session, just as logging in with that user.
Using "sudo", or "su" without the dash creates a new environment inheriting the session variables from the current user, thus GUI apps can work fine (as they have inherited the $DISPLAY, $DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS and other variables used by X applications).
Anyway, as an alternative to "su", you could use "sudo -i".
Another difference which is applicable to Ubuntu and maybe Arch, is that "su"ing to root you are asked for the root password, while using "sudo" you are asked for your password, not the "root" one.

Rhythmbox error: will only play music as root [SOLVED]

Hello, Rhythmbox refuses to play anything as a normal user, but runs completely fine under root. I am indeed under the audio group, as far as I know I *should* have the right permissions. It'll load correctly (seemingly), but when I go to press Play, the button "presses down," but nothing will ever play; the cursor won't move. Everything is updated, all codecs are installed... I really don't know what to do with it at this point. I figure it's permission-related given that it works under root, but really, I don't know. I would really appreciate some help.

Yeah, there is a GTK+ error:
EDIT: the GTK+ error repeats numerous times, and doesn't appear when trying to play a song.
EDIT EDIT: this is without the debug option.

Thing is, all these errors are present when running as root.

Bad graphics unless root *solved*

Ok i know this is proboly a permission problem, but im not aware of how to fix this. The problem im having is that i want to play a game such as planeshift, if i run it as a regular user my graphics are all screwed up, the font is like size .01 and when i run it as root its all gravy.

"command not found" when using bash as root [SOLVED]

Some examples:
bash: gparted: command not found
bash: cryptsetup: command not found
bash: lsusb: command not found
All of these are defintely installed, and work without any problems if I type in their full path. Any idea why this is happening?

That means you're not starting it as a login shell, so you may want to look in to that.
/etc/profile is what you need,
echo "source /etc/profile" > /root/.bashrc
That's safe to do regardless and you can look in to the login shell problem later.

Help! My button is huge, ugly, and non-button like...

Hopefully this is an easy one. But I'm just stumped why I can't shrink this button down. Its taking up the entire SOUTH despite that I am trying to set its dimensions explicitly with setSize. This is in an Applet. Can someone tell me why setSize is not working for me?

Iron only works as root [Solved]

Hey guys...
I just installed Iron via the AUR, which only works if started via
sudo iron
Running it as a normal user gives me:

Is that just a missing dependency? But then why does it work when run as su? Any ideas?

@SleepyFloyd: Didn't find a font "terminal" on my system. Probably, it is named differently, but if you do not have xorg-fonts-misc installed, you should try installing it, too.

Thunar is missing icons, and generally ugly. Help?[SOLVED]

So I just set up Arch yesterday, and am using thunar. But the icons in thunar are very... limited. Take a look at my screenshot. As it is, I can't tell the difference between folders and files. Anyone mind telling me what I'm doing wrong?

You probably need to install hicolor-icon-theme for your icons.
As for the uglyness you need to tell gtk to use a theme. You can use lxappearance to set the gtk theme, icon set, and other settings. You will probably have to go to http://gnome-look.org and pick out a them that you like. I personally like Murrina Gilouche.

Bash shell for root not sourcing .bashrc

Hi all
Finally got around to getting my home LAPP server up and running - on Arch of course!
Small problem that's really annoying. I can't get root's shell to source the .bashrc file.
I (kind of) followed the colorized prompt tip from the Wiki:

Except I put EVERYTHING in to /etc/bashrc then sym linked my user and root ~/.bashrc to /etc/bashrc:
fukawi2 ~ $ ls -lha .bashrc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 fukawi2 fukawi2 11 2008-04-01 21:53 .bashrc -> /etc/bashrc
And that works fine. Root doesn't though. I tried removing the symlink and replacing it with a 'normal' .bashrc file that only sources /etc/bashrc if it exists:

. /etc/bashrc
fi
But if I source it manually after I su or sudo, it works fine:

Not having the colors doesn't bother me so much - it's not having all my aliases and not being able to change root's $PATH variable to include /usr/local/bin/ that's really annoying.
Anyone got any advice or suggestions please?

Besides having a .bashrc file, you also need a .bash_profile file in root's home directory. .bash_profile should contain the following:
. $HOME/.bashrc
the .bash_profile file tells bash what file to use for configuration, which by convention has always been .bashrc.

[Solved] ugly theme in some apps

Hi
I have install arch along with kde. In some apps like firefox, trnasmission etc. the application interface is ugly so I installed oxygen-gtk2 and oxygen-gtk3 but none of them are appearing in system-setting. I haven't use gnome much but I think this ugly appearence of some apps is due to missing gtk style. Am I right? How can I fix it?

Firefox is a GTK2 application and Transmission is a GTK3 application. Themes for both toolkits can easily changed by editing the configuration files for GTK2 and GTK3. (See here)
Also, see here for more information on configuring Oxygen in KDE.
Lastly, isn't there a checkbox in "System Settings" (a KDE application) that says something like "Manange themes for other toolkits"? Do you have that enabled?

Non latin characters in .cfm filename

Hi - I have users who want to name files with non latin characters. i.e.
Логотип_БелРусь_2500x1.cfm
We get a file not found error, it is not an IIS issue and we have UTF-8 encoding and are running CF8.
Yes we can rename the files but for now would like to know if non latin characters are allowed in .cfm file names.

WPA Security w/ Non-Apple Wireless Base?

I'm upgrading from an original Airport BS and was curious to see if anyone has purchased a wireless "N" station from another compatible brand such as Netgear?
My question is about security. If I purchase a non-Apple router, how do I set up WAP security?

Setting up WPA security (or WEP for that matter) on a non-AirPort device, is pretty much the same. Most non-AirPort routers, like Belkin, D-Link, or Linksys, use a web-based administration format. Most also include a CD with automated setup for Windows-based devices.
I suggest that you download a copy of the user's manual for the particular router you are interested in and take a look at how wireless security is established before you make a purchase.

as the build-in component is far from enough and i don't want to build and maintance these components by myself.
so i am looking for a more comprehensive set to UI components, both free or commercial are ok.
but, what i meet is that i can't find such components in the market!!
so, i wonder if i can rely on Flex to build a usable application for in house use.
as i said b4, there is no:
1. datetime picker
   2. paging table
3. keyboard mnemonics
4. text field / area no redo/undo
5. no titled border (i.e. a control to surround another control (canvas?) and give a text description)
i know there are many many other fancy control available in the web, but i can't (or i don't know where to) find these common UI component.
as i am new to flex, i don't want to build all the controls i needed, i would rather buy them (of course at reasonable price!).
again....anybody know such kind of popular/well-know UI component suite ? (especially with the above controls i mention)
